Description

Master, you have to help us, kupo!

Have you heard of the Feast of Swords?

It's a Far Eastern festival that celebrates the health and growth of boys. People decorate with huge flags in the shape of fish, and dress their sons in fancy armor, kupo. There are also lots of magical, yummy goodies to eat, of course...

Oops, talking about festivals always distracts me, kupo!

After the slight hiccup with the Doll Festival, the M.H.M.U. decided to hold a festival that appealed to the male half of the adventuring population. We sought the advice of a distinguished samurai, and began preparing for the Feast of Swords, kupo.

Our samurai adviser kindly brought in some sets of legendary armor from the Far East to lend an authentic feel to the event. That's when our problems began, kupo...

Someone--or something--broke into our vaults and stole the suits of armor, kupo!

Now the very same criminals have donned their ill-gotten costumes, infused them with their tainted auras, and are rampaging around the countryside!

We took the bad news to the samurai and this is what he said, kupo: "I borrowed those suits of armor from the noble Genji family, a famous line of samurai. While I doubt that any blade could even raise a scratch, any damage to these rare and valuable artifacts could develop into a diplomatic nightmare. However, I believe that the evil entities corrupting the armor can be driven out through the use of specially blessed wooden katana. There is no other way to solve this dilemma."

We must retrieve those suits of armor intact before the Feast of Swords is over. I don't want to be looking over my shoulder for retribution-seeking ninja assassins from the Far East, kupo!

The M.H.M.U. put the festival preparations on hold to order a mountain of wooden katana.

Please help us, kupo! Talk to an M.H.M.U. moogle to get your weapon, and then receive a special blessing from the nomad moogles outside town. Take the fight to those thieving scoundrels!

The peace of Vana'diel--and the fate of the moogles--rests on your shoulders, kupo!

It >is< possible for a level one character to solo these things, but they don't work like normal mobs -- be warned that it is possible to have your kill stolen from you even while you have it clearly claimed.

I spent about thirty minutes chasing one of these things around East Ronfaure as a level 1 ranger. It took not only that time, but several Potions and a stack of Selbina Milk, to repair the effects of its frequent AoE attacks as I kept beating on it. I took this one from full health down to a sliver, and I was within a few strikes of killing it, when two other players came up and started hitting it, even though I had claimed it -- the name was in red, but it changed from red to purple in turn as each of us hit it. One of them killed it on his second strike, so all I got for my effort and expense was a stack of silly food that changes your character's appearance.

Deeply disheartening!

well, if i'm not mistaken... ur wooden katana charges up with each additonal effect hit. I've gone out and whacked a few quite a number of times, but not killed one. I still recieved several stacks of moochi, which coresponded to how many hits i had landed on different types of armor.

And i solo'd one without itmes. Had RNG sub for widescan, every time i got low on life, just get down and heal for 30 secs. Then tracked it down again. After about 1.5 hours, i finally killed it, arged another, and died :P fun quest tho

Hardwood Katana was the first item i got from the event moogle, and i did get a finishing blow. As for the mochis im 100% sure u get 1 mochi for each time u hit that type of "race armor", however if u get a finishing blow and havent yet received the Hardwood Katana, u will get just the katana from the moogle. After that u will get just mochi. If u dont ever get a finishing blow, then all u will get is mochi.

Ya that's exactly it. The theory has already been proven

Hint: When you deal the final blow, the "Armor falls to the ground." line appears in yellow/gold, instead of the normal grey.

i got my hardwood on the 1st armor elvaan kind in east sarutabaruta... i got the killing blow but it does not say "Shurtugal defeats Tsukikazu Armor" it just says "Tsukikazu Armor falls to the ground" so maybe all u people saying u didnt get the killing blow may have been wrong...

Just to clear this up for the three of you out there who still don't know how to get the hardwood katana, it's the reward for striking the finishing blow on the armors. In other words, you have to be the last person to hit it.
wooden sword
# Apr 29 2005 at 7:05 PM Rating: Decent
i have also gotten the hardwood katana, which seems kinda useless to me. but the way i did it was i got 12 hits on each. though, my total hit count was 57 when i got the sword. so it may be a combination of get like 60 hits or hit each 12 times...anyrate. for those that are having trouble finding certain types.

Try looking in different parts of the zone, east saru for instance tends to have elf type at south end, galka type along the middle, west end. humes at the middle east end, and taru's wearing the armor along the north portion of the map.
what about the armors

How many hits do u have to make before u even get the mochi's? I was out this morn whacking away at several armors in the course of 2 hrs. Returned to the Moogle (in Sandy) and he keeps telling me to use the wooden katana. No mochi's. am I doing something wrong, or is there a certain amount of hits to achieve before you get anything?

You have to trade the katana to the moogle to get the mochi.
RE: The Armors

1 hit = 1 mochi, depending on what armor type u hit.

if you hit the galkan armor, u get a galka mochi, taru armor = taru mochi etc...

So, I got the Hardwood Katana last night. I tried to trade it to the moogle, and he called me silly. That I need to use wooden katana for the event.

Well, I went out and used the Hardwood katana anyways on the armors!! But, it seems to do 0 dmg without the additional effect so I wasn't hurting them.

So that begs the question, what exactly *does* this hardwood katana do? Just 5 dmg instead of 1 dmg over the wooden? Just so I can go whm/sam or smn/sam and do Tachi:XXXX =/
RE: got it!
# Apr 29 2005 at 9:58 PM Rating: Decent
Doesnt this quest restrict you to level 1? how could u use Tachi:XXXX? First WS is at 10 Great Katana...?

Of course, you can't use Tachi:Enpi *in* the events....

I asked that because it seems the hardwood katana isn't for the event. So I was wondering what it's uses might be since a level 1 GKatana is 12 dmg and lower delay. I guess just decoration? But if I want decoration why don't I just keep the wooden one?

btw yeah. Hundred Fists pwns with these Katana in the event.
Killer
# Apr 29 2005 at 12:30 PM Rating: Decent
I will also vouch for the notion that the killing blow is most important. I ran around for 5 hours last night getting pissed off, I turned in my sword several times for over 2 stacks of each kind of mochi.

Then I decided, "ok, one last time, if I don't get it this time, i'm done" so i went out and lucky the first armor I saw had ~4 health left. I was the first one there, so I got all 4 hits off and killed him, went back, traded in sword and got hardwood katana.
Getting the Hardwood Katana...
# Apr 29 2005 at 10:13 AM Rating: Decent
Getting the hardwood katana is pretty easy. I got mine last night. The key to getting one is dealing the final blow on any of the armors. I have proof of this because I turned in my wooden katana three times last night before I got the hardwood one. The first two times I got a number of mochi equivalent to the number of hits I had landed on the armors. 12 on the Tsukikazu Armor, 6 on the Hachiryu Armor, 2 on the Hume one (dunno what it's name is), and 3 on the Tarutaru one (dunnot that one either). The second time around I got 3 more Galka Mochi and 12 more Elvaan Mochi. Now, the last run I had I went out and found my own Tsukikazu that had been half-beaten down. After a few minutes I was joined by a bunch of other people and we laid waste to the thing. I scored the last hit (denoted by the last point of damage being dealt by my wooden katana's added effect). I went and turned in my wooden katana and the moogle gave me a hardwood one.
Doing it the Easy Way
# Apr 29 2005 at 9:05 AM Rating: Good
A misconception, fixed:
-hitting each armor 12 or 20 or any number of times will not have any effect on your chance at recieving a hardwood katana except if you hit each of the 4, 12 times. You will know when you do this because the event moogle will give you a stack of each mochi.

Regarding where the nomad moogles/armor are located: REBeyer is correct, I ran past some in jugner forest, and sauromugue champaign, as well as the ones in the lowest-level areas adjoining to the 3 cities (ie: Sarutabaruta to windurst, gustaburg to bastok...)etc, so they're pretty much anywhere.

THE EASIEST WAY TO GET THE HARDWOOD KATANA

1. Sub RNG.(or bst) If you don't have rng sub, get it. It is, without a doubt, the easiest of the job quests.

2. Go as a MNK/RNG.

3. =D maybe that was a little cryptic, MNK is for Hundred Fists. If the easiest way to get the hardwood katana is to deal the last blow, 2 hour it! Easy as that. And, yes, 2 hour will go off with the katana equiped.

Other tips/hints
a) You don't get aggro with the lvl 1 cap on
So, if you need the rng job quest, use the nomad moogle @ the zone to Meriph. Mountains to get your cap so you can run into the cave (L-10) via the ledge (L-8ish) without getting killed by the half a dozen or so tigers.

b) The Armors run in patterns. Ex: one of them (can't remember which) always runs past the entrance to east saru. and then turns around and runs back past it. That is a good time to catch them. Use your common sense when hunting these.

c) Have fun! If this is frustrating you, ***** it. It's just an event.

I'm afraid hitting each of the 4 armors 12 times is not a guarantee in yielding the hardwood katana.

I did this last night (5/28). Hit each one a minimum of 12 times with 2 of them (Hume & Elvaan) about 15-20 times (give or take). I went to the inside moogle to trade my wooden katana in for the aura check and received a max of 12 of each race's mochis. Dispite hitting the Elvaan armor the most (around 20 times), I only received 12 Elvaan Mochi. Hume = 12 Hume Mochi. Tarutaru = 12 Taru Mochi. Galka = 12 Galka Mochi.

After having the 4 full stacks, I tried to trade the wooden katana again and it was discounted (nothing happened). I then went outside and chatted with the Nomad Moogle to get the cap again, hit the Hume armor, came back and traded for 3 Hume Mochi. No hardwood katana.

I believe there is another variable other than the number of mochi (and variety) you possess, if there is another method of obtaining the hardwood katana (aside from landing the "killing" blow).

If you guys get any new info on this event please post it. So far I have seen that it does not depend on how many times you hitthem for the wooden katana. My friend and i fought all the same ones. I got katana he got food. Im currently going to test the 12 of each and then 80 hits on 1 and all b4 trading. I have time ^^.

If you're not gonna use your two hour anytime soon, go MNK/RNG and hit Hundred Fists when it stops. Quite a beautiful sight, Hundred Fisting a great katana.

Also, for those of you looking into rumors about additional items beyond the Hardwood Katana, consider what the rewards were for the Doll Festival, and compare.

Hitting the samurais 12 times or more just
gets you 12 moshi of particular kind.

you need to get the kill hit for each of the different race sam to get next katana.

I did not have fun getting the hardwood katana though... I got 2 stacks of all mochi so far (checked whenever the armor decided to do it's aoe curse, then NOT run :) )

Has any one noticed the armor running about in other areas such as jugner? I tryed to zone with the level cap and lost it each time. And there does not seem to be a quest moogle in these other areas. Any thoughts on this?

The moogles aren't at every zone entrance, like there's not one at the East Sarutabaruta <-> Tahrongi Canyon area. Just look around, it's probably at a different entrance to the zone.

Actually, there is a Nomad Moogle at the East Sarutabaruta - Tahrongi Canyon zone, but it's on the canyon side of the zoneline. Also, I have seen armors in both Rolanberry Fields and Pashow Marshlands.

MAKING SURE YOU GET HARDWOOD KATANA!

here's a trick that I figured out and taught my LS buddies.

Before you trade in your Wooden Katana, make sure your inventory is packed.
Now if you try trading the Wooden Katana to the moogle, it will tell you what items he wants to give you, but he can't give it to you because your inventory is full.

If he wants to give you a mochi, go back out and attack the armors some more. Then just keep coming back and try trading until he wants to trade you the hardwood katana. when he does, make space in your inventory and trade.

Happy Hunting!

I tried trading in the wooden sword to the moogle and it would not trade it to me. Said that i had to sort my inventory, but i had space in my items, like 5 slots. Anyone know the reason why they would not trade it to me.

Never mind i tried again and it finally traded it to me.
