Description

Speak to Salim for a cutscene where he will talk about a Monk who is loitering in the chapel (basement of the Metalworks). He will ask you to get rid of the loiterer. Head to the little chapel (down the stairs between the elevators), and examine the ???. You will get a fun little cutscene.

Luto will let you choose one key item out of a possible seven. You will then need to speak to various NPCs in the Metalworks to get the order of switches to activate (there will be eight). This order will change every time you try the quest. The NPCs will give you cryptic comments like "the first and third are the same", and you will have to recreate the correct order to activate the switches.

Guards will be present when you first touch the switches, and you will have a choice of actions. The guard's comments/reactions will dictate which choice you select. If the guard says something about wanting to get off work to go for a drink or two or three, let Milendo the Tarutaru deal with him. If the guard comments that he can hardly wait to get his hands on the thieves, let Luto the Mithra do her thing. If the guard is the main guard accompanied by a Tarutaru, use the item you chose from the Luto earlier during the cutscene. If it is the main guard unaccomanied by a Tarutaru, choose to "say something clever" and that you are waiting for friends.

IF you should get caught, one of your team will go to Salim's prison. You need to speak to Fergus in the Craftsmen's Eatery, and then speak to Folzen to retrieve your captured member. If you do get caught, you must start from the first switch again.

You can only fail once. If you get caught a second time, you must start over from the beginning - speak to Salim and get the cutscene again, then speak to all the NPCs for the new order of switches to deactivate.

I chose the Lucky Charm and was rewarded with a short cutscene and the charm was transformed into a Key Ring Belt, a level 20 THF-only rare/exclusive belt that dispenses 5 skeleton keys, but also has defense attributes and adds "+1 to Steal".

I received a pinch of Prism Powder when selecting the Bard's Harp, as did a poster further below.

Hi Ether is another reward, I chose 'trap' as the item Luto gave me, don't know if it's affected or just random.

No, you are all wrong about the NPCs. I just recently got mine and he gained one level. The NPC lady JUST told me about the option to trade her equipment-this whole rumor about NPC fame is crap, considering you don't even use the NPC or anyone or anything related to the NPC Fellow in this quest. Stop spreading rumors. As it is, I have max fame in all 4 major cities. Unfortunately I can't answer what is required for this quest, but I can dispel (haha) a stupid rumor about NPC fame.

To get I'm guessing you must have at least finished the NPC quest to get the Tactics Manual, because during this quest you meet Milado-Shirrado.

I have now completed this quest using ALL the items including the ???(Costume Kit). So IF (and i mean "IF") the NPC quests have ANYTHING to do with this quest then it would ONLY apply to the ??? (Costume Kit)

I've been scanning the posts here and on the THF forums and have yet to see someone mention the actual fame level needed to get this quest. I am Fame 2 in Bastok and it was unavailable to me. Anyone know how high your fame needs to be?
RE: Required Fame?
# Mar 30 2006 at 3:58 AM Rating: Decent
You need your NPC and "bonding" to be high enough.

I haven't done any of the npc quests yet, but I have done this quest. My fame in Bastok is level 4.

how high is "high enough"?
I've basically done zero quests with my NPC, only levelled him up 1 level, I visit him maybe once a week if he's lucky, and have certainly gotten him killed more than his fair share of times.

or is it rather that your fame needs to be high enough that you're at a level where you can start doing the NPC quest to start with?
1 week

I see alot of people saying "a week" you can redo this quest, is the a RL week?

In most cases, quests that can only be repeated once a week simply reset after the conquest tally (Sunday night, midnight, Japan time).
for example, I've gotten into the habit of doing the Lost Chocobo mini quest every Sunday around 11:30 AM EST (GMT-5), which is shortly after the conquest tally (and the approximate time that the NPC gives me the desired stables destination).

Since Bait and Switch is not a "time sensitive" quest, you can repeat it any time after that conquest tally, once a real life week.

when you repeat this quest, the switch order will vary from 4-8 switches, and more importantly, the hints you will get from the NPCs will be more obscure each time.
One time I just couldn't figure out the switches, so I just left the metalworks and the quest basically reset itself.
If you follow the quest description above you SHOULDN'T have to guess about where to go, what switch to flip, nor which of your thieving comrades to use.

I have done 3 of the quests so far.. one each week. Me and a friend are working towards the ??? prize at the end just to see what it is. Now please bare with me... but here is the easy way to win the questions u get at each switch. Anytime the blue guard 'Tiger' is in the cut...use Lutu. And any time its the other blue guard <sorry...i forget the name> then select your taru friend to beat him. And when ever u see the lead guard <red> use the item u received. Never select to talk to the guard yourself. Between me and my friend we have covered them all but the ??? and this trick worked every time...just get your math right when getting your clues for the switches :P

to clarify on what Sledd said...
guard says "i want a drink or two... or three" send Miledo (Tarutaru) (You can also talk to him yourself and select waiting for a friend)
guards says "i want to catch a thief" send Luto

When using the Bard's Harp on them I THINK the songs you play were: Guard says "i want a drink or two... or three" play the childhood song... Guard says "I want to catch a thief" play the Promotion day song

*I may have gotten the songs to be played on which guard backwards. When using lead guardsmen ID choose orders based on the guards personality. The guard who wants booze give him a break, the guard who wants action send him to guard somewhere else. As for using the snares place them ONLY at the locations of the switches.

The bards harp has 3 songs per guard
(i believe i have the right sets)
Childhood memories-galka talks about how he was made fun of, you get of free
Lead Guardsman's Lectures-im pretty sure this option
gets you captured(untested)
Recent happy times-The galka recalls a fishing adventure, and give you 10 gil
--------------------------------
Promotion day-The galka recalls being promoted on his birthday and gives you 10 gil
Bitter Rivalry-The galka recalls a rival who was killed in an accident at a young age, then crys and runs off (somewhat amusing), you get off free
Theif Catching-the galka will start to recall catching a theif, and chase after one of your members, (mileado when i did it)
--------------------
so one for 10 gil(only once per guard, but will still get you off the hook afterwards), one for nothing, one for catching a member
also there is some crazy bard guy that says stuff in the cutscenes
Mileado was also a bard when i did this one
Skelton keys

Basically while its only 5 a week this is an unlimited source of skelton keys for theives, pretty sweet. Also should make the price for these things drop a bit.

When I did this one I got caught once. After I let my captured guy out I started again at the switch that I had been caught at. I finished the quest and got my belt, so you shouldn't have to start at the first switch if you mess up.
done and fail 15 times
# Mar 27 2006 at 2:50 PM Rating: Decent
actually you can get caught 3 times before you completly fail. I've done this thing so many times and have suceeded ones. only know to talk to 2 people the guy to free you and the little galka that helps you out of jail. Guess I need to use the eye thing and talk to mare people.
More info.

Yes, Key Ring Belt is just one of the rewards. I have done it all but one week since the quest was released, picking a new item each time and recieving a new reward. I have yet to be able to choose the ???, I'm not sure what that's all about. The Key Ring Belt is the only truly worthwhile reward though, and you could theoretically make a nice profit from Skeleton Keys, 5 every week. I have noticed that the story gets deeper and deeper each time, so maybe something new will happen soon.

I chose the bard's Harp, cuz I thought that maybe i might get a bardish item as a reward, and i got a prisim powder >< evil quest... EVIL!!
A slight correction to the guide.
# Mar 26 2006 at 10:11 PM Rating: Decent
One, this quest is repeatable only once per week, and that is after the conquest tally.

Two, for more corrections go to this link. http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/jobs.html?fjob=10;mid=114055479063188999;num=57;page=1

That link is from the THF forum, has a better guide in it.
