Description

Speak to Salim for a cutscene where he will talk about a Monk who is loitering in the chapel (basement of the Metalworks). He will ask you to get rid of the loiterer. Head to the little chapel (down the stairs between the elevators), and examine the ???. You will get a fun little cutscene.

Luto will let you choose one key item out of a possible seven. You will then need to speak to various NPCs in the Metalworks to get the order of switches to activate (there will be eight). This order will change every time you try the quest. The NPCs will give you cryptic comments like "the first and third are the same", and you will have to recreate the correct order to activate the switches.

Guards will be present when you first touch the switches, and you will have a choice of actions. The guard's comments/reactions will dictate which choice you select. If the guard says something about wanting to get off work to go for a drink or two or three, let Milendo the Tarutaru deal with him. If the guard comments that he can hardly wait to get his hands on the thieves, let Luto the Mithra do her thing. If the guard is the main guard accompanied by a Tarutaru, use the item you chose from the Luto earlier during the cutscene. If it is the main guard unaccomanied by a Tarutaru, choose to "say something clever" and that you are waiting for friends.

IF you should get caught, one of your team will go to Salim's prison. You need to speak to Fergus in the Craftsmen's Eatery, and then speak to Folzen to retrieve your captured member. If you do get caught, you must start from the first switch again.

You can only fail once. If you get caught a second time, you must start over from the beginning - speak to Salim and get the cutscene again, then speak to all the NPCs for the new order of switches to deactivate.

I chose the Lucky Charm and was rewarded with a short cutscene and the charm was transformed into a Key Ring Belt, a level 20 THF-only rare/exclusive belt that dispenses 5 skeleton keys, but also has defense attributes and adds "+1 to Steal".

Just finished this quest, didn't take long to do at all. Just a little note to all, there are only 3 switches used in this quest.
Quote:
You will then need to speak to various NPCs in the Metalworks to get the order of switches to activate (there will be eight).

That threw me off and made me think there were a total of 8 switches, but that's not the case, those 3 switches are used a different number of times to deactivate the trap, but I realized that from http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Bait_and_Switch. I found the info about the guards to be a lot more useful on Allakhazam than ffxiclopedia. Oh and one last bit of info, I only have level 3 Bastok fame. Hope that helps anyone...

Yeah had the same experience, worried that even talking to all 4 npc's for clues I only had enough info for a total of 6 switch (turns?).

Just out of interest, I chose the Lead Guard ID - and I had cut-scene where the other lead guard 'pensive beast' decided to to tell he was quitting, lol - and I received a hi-potion as a reward.

My npc is lv40,( With sum really cool armour ). I'v finshed Cam.Caper, and i am gearing up for the Fei' Yin battle. So the whole Npc thing is covered. Basty Fame: Hero. thats dun.
Iv uncovered 3 combonations of switches that are confirmed on these posts. I'v completed all but ID and ??? option, now im stumped. I'v dun some of the comboes with only 4 switches needed to hear the "Click from the temple", Now The ID option takes me to 4 as well, then stops. 0o ( L M S S ... )
All of the responses hav been the same untill now. "Wants a drink = Taru/ Wants action = Luto. I havnt needed 3rd option yet.
So now my proccess of elimation looks: ( L(o) M(o) S(o) S(o) S(x) M(x) L(x) )

Im open for clues/ options that i'v overlooked on these other posts.

The switch order is never the same, it is completely randomized. You need to talk to the npcs in the metalworks. A few of them will tell you parts of the switch order which you then piece together to get the switch order. I think that's what you're doing wrong.

I did this quest on the first day it was introduced (and they had yet to put in a time limit for the quest, so I did it multiple times in a row), and after choosing the

???

for my item, I recieved the

Friar's Rope

belt item. I'm not sure if this is what you still get, as this has been monthes ago, but thought it was worth mentioning since no one here seems to have said anything about it.

Ok, I just did this quest with the Scope and got a silent oil Potion.
The readout here says repeatable, but I tried one ingame day later, zoned and still couldnt. The general amount of time you have to wait for repeatables. What are the reqs to repeat it, so I can get the belt?

You can get caught twice and still get the Key Ring belt. I was caught by the main guard on the last switch 2ce. I used both excuses and finally used the lucky charm and got the belt.
The orders are the same but random

There are always the same set of switches that you can activate, but although they are a set there are a number of combinations.

Here is the one set I had

MED BIG SMALL BIG BIG SMALL MED SMALL

If you don't get the set you want, then quit the quest and restart. I was lucky this time round as the head Galka went everywhere else.

If you make a mistake in picking the right person the switches remain correct so you shouldn't have to restart.

I was a complete idiot and wasn't paying attention of the last switch and picked the wrong person who ended up in jail. Bust him/her out and just press the switch that was meant in that order and it should work.

I think another combination is:

SMALL MED BIG MED SMALL BIG MED MED

This is for the THF belt.

I still an't get this quest. How much fame do you need?!

I'm a lv 20 Elvaan Thief from San D'Oria. I've completed the following Bastok quests:

Beauty and the Galka
Welcome to Bastok
Gourmet
The Elvaan Goldsmith
Stamp Hunt
Mom, the Adventurer?
The Bare Bones
Brygid the Stylist

How much more do I need?

Or is this quest only availible in the new expansion, which I don't yt have?

You need to complete the quest "Mirror, Mirror" from Luto Mewrilah in Upper Jeuno to get your NPC first. It's the third quest in a three-quest fellowship series to receive a signal pearl to call out an NPC to fight with you. You need rank 4 in order to start the fellowship quests.
Hope that helps!

What CandiRandi says is completely wrong. I have not done the "Mirror, Mirror" quest in Upper Jeuno, yet I still got this one.

All I did was pump fame by trading lots and lots of Millioncorn to that guy with the sheep in Selbina.

Also, I'm currently Rank 3.
RE: What the hell?
# Oct 05 2006 at 8:25 AM Rating: Decent
That quest is for Jeuno fame, not Bastok fame
RE: What the hell?
# Nov 02 2006 at 11:30 AM Rating: Decent
Heh.. EHN wrong. ;p that Quest is for San d'Oria fame and Bastok fame, which in turn helps Jeuno fame, because Jeuno fame is tied to Windurst, San d'Oria and Bastok fame.

Millioncorn/Cabbage/Moss quest = Sandy and Bastok :3

All I know is that I couldn't get this quest with my mule, even though he has level 5 Bastok fame, but I got it with my main character at level 3 Bastok fame, and I'd already finished the NPC quests.
In either case, I'm pretty sure you need at least level 3 fame.

It may deal with your interaction with Luto (who I think is the person you give yag necklaces to in Windy) I think if you have never interacted with her, or not enough, then you may not be able to start it. Call me crazy

......crap. Well, this puts a slight damper on my plans of joyous theftage. Regardless, thanks for the info. At least now I won't waste anymore time on these quests. At least for now. Now I just have to go get Rank four and do Jeuno quests. ><

Salim to start the quest (Metalworks)
Check the ??? in the temple (bottom floor) for a CS with Luto, pick your Special item to help you out.

The final rewards are based on what you choose here

Scope -> Silent Oil
Bard's Harp -> Prism Powder
Snares -> Hi-Ether
Lead Guardsman's ID -> Hi-Potion
Lucky Charm -> Key Ring Belt
Pocket Watch -> Hermes Quencher

There are 3 switches located in the metalworks, a small, medium, and large. You must press a total of 8 switches, using a combination of these three.

Talk to Folzen, Helmut, Dahra, Hungry Wolf, and Striking snake for clues on what order to press the switches. They will only tell you once,so make sure you write it downFigure out your order, and then press the 1st switch.

When you press the switch it will trigger a CS with a guard. you have to choose how you want to get rid of the guard, so you can continue on. For every switch there will be this CS.

Luto will always succeed in getting rid of the Gentle Tiger.
Miledo will aways succeed in getting rid of Militant Gale.

The lucky charm got rid of The Lead Guardsman (red gear, I forget his name) for me twice

If you choose wrong, one of your friends will be captured. Talk to Ferghus and then Folzen to get your friend back. You can only do this twice before you have to start the quest over (with a new switch pattern)

Once you have pressed all eight switches, check the ??? in the temple again for your reward.

The Quest is repeatable every new conquest period, and you can get the Key Ring Belt again, if you have worn out all the charges on it, (make sure you toss it, becuase its /ex, so you can only own 1) but there you have it, GL rate up ^^

I remember doing this to get my Key Ring Belt, and I had to restart a few times cuz i kept getting caught...
The info given on alla is different than how I did it...
The part that says when it's the Galka that talks about going to have a drink or two, you leave it to the Tarutaru. No matter what switch you are at.
If you get the Galka that just wants to capture the thieves, you leave it to the Mithra, UNLESS you are at the medium switch. If you're at the medium switch, chose to say something clever, and that you are checking out the metalworks. Also, I was told that if you EVER get the main leader Galka, with a tarutaru or not, always use the item you picked, but it might not always work.
That's what I went by, and I got my Key Ring Belt. Just thought I'd share this.
some corrections
# Apr 07 2006 at 5:24 PM Rating: Decent
OK after messing up cuz alla had bunk info YET AGAIN heres some more vital info:

-there are 3 switches- medium is when u zone into metalworks, small is in cermet refinery, and large is near blacksmithing guild

-i only had to talk to 3 npcs to figure out the order- i used Darha (NW corner, elevator room), Striking Snake (Gunpowder room, 2nd floor), and Hungry Wolf (eatery)
(one says XXX is first, one says press XXX last, and one says 1 and 5 are same, also 3, 6, 7, and last are same, cept he changes the #s). apparently there are more npcs but i didnt use em, and i did this thing 3x

-my friend chose lucky charm, and only got silent oil. so wtf

-i chose pocket watch and got hermes quencher

-i have chameleon capers done, but the ??? stayed the ??? for me, and never turned into a costume kit

-every time i had to pick what to say, i got caught. when i GOT the item, i had sent the taru as indicated (i had said "waiting for someone" both times, to lead guard)

INDICATIONS FOR WHAT TO DO AT EACH SWITCH
-guard line ends with "I'd like to hurry up and catch someone though, so I can go out and enjoy a drink or two... or three..." = Miledo the TARU

-guard line ends with "Just wait until I lay my hands on them" = Luto the MITHRA

-guards doesnt say anything, u just see him standing all alone= say something clever

-guard still say nothing but you can SEE the taru in the cloak= USE KEY ITEM

SO! get a notepad, have correct switch responses with you. make 8 boxes on ur notepad, talk to these NPCs and mark correct order in the 8 spaces, and go hit em. dont get caught, dont zone, dont take more than ONE EARTH HOUR

i kinda like my hermes quencher, im gonna see if i get same reward next week. i feel bad for my THF friend who got swindled w that stupid silent oil though. good luck, i hope this helps someone

<3 your asuran friend, cassca

I think if you zone or log off you gotta start the quest all over.

I was in the middle of the switch-hitting and had to do some stuff so I went to mog house. I logged off, logged back in and when I came back the next switch didn't work. I talked to Salim again and the quest started over. >.>

Not sure if it was the zoning or the logging off, but it affected the quest.

Talk to Selim, then goto the ??? to start quest. Pick "Lucky Charm" if you want the "Key ring belt" in the end. Talk to these 4 for your clues:
**All the phrases your given are random but i got:

Helmut(F-8)
"..activate me the hardest switch to trigger 3rd and 6th!"

Darha(F-8)
"I think the smallest should be 1st."

Striking Snake(H-7,floor 2)
"..you should probaly save the medium-sized switch for last."

Hungry Wolf(G-9,floor 2)
-He tells you the rest you need to know. For Ex:
"1st and 5th are the same..2nd,4th,7th,last are identical"

Evaluted Ex---------------»»
L=Large, M=Medium, S=Small

Smallest = 1st,5th; Medium = 2nd,4th,7th,8th; Large = 3rd,8th

S M L M S L M M
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Then go back to the ??? to recieve a CS and a ReWaRd

You left out the fifth NPC. Although sometimes you have all you need after 4 NPCs, it's always best to talk to all 5. The last one is the same Galka boy you speak to if Luto or Miledo gets nailed. Forzen.
The ???
# Apr 03 2006 at 12:53 PM Rating: Decent
I can confirm that the ??? is indeed Miledo-Shiraddo's Costume Kit that you received as a key item after Chameleon Capers. Since you cannot have this in your key item inventory unless Chameleon Capers is complete, it only makes sense that it's prerequisite to being able to choose the Kit. Perim is correct that you must have used all the other items, or at least it seems that way since the NPCs that show up in each run through of the quest all appear at the end of the COstume Kit run.

The quest starts as usual, but once you get the list, the ??? will be replaced with the Costume Kit in Key Item purple, reinforcing the idea that you must have the Costume Kit key item before you can do this.

You'll be given a 10-switch combination and you must use the correct disguise on each NPC to receive your clues. Forzen requires use of the Knitted Cap to make you become a child((boy or girl depending on char sex?)), Helmut requires you to use the Spectacles to become an old person((Man or woman depending on char sex?)), and the 3 Galkas require you to use the Silver Heels to become a young woman.

With clues in hand you can begin the exhaustive process of hitting 10 switches. My order was LSMSLSMLMS. You will encounter Salim each time. I used the Costume Kit every time with no incident. Have no idea what would happen with the other options. I also don't know if using the same costume twice in a row might be bad. I changed every time. In any case when you become a woman he thinks you're his wife. If you're a child he thinks you're one of his kids. And if you're the old person he thinks you're his Father((Mother for a female char?)). After pulling the wool over Salim's eyes 10 times you go to the ??? in the Temple and launch the last cutscene. It's the culmination of all your mischief.

At the end you receive one Icarus Wing. Kind of disappointing aside from the CS. Could have given a new title, but oh well. It also seems that it burns your Costume Kit key item. Whether you can get another or if you can continue to use the Kit for the quest regardless I don't yet know.

I completed this quest last night and was lucky enough to recieve my Key chain belt. I then went to do it with my mule who is level 30 and rank 3 he does not have the NPC quest done or unlocked.and the only difference with the procedure of the quest was that instead of recognizing me as a friend, Luto treated me as an adventurer come to help them. So I believe that having done the NPC quest is only evident in the wording of the CS dialogue.
