Summary

There is a rare treasure in the "Middle Lands" that Waoud needs someone to obtain for him...

Walkthrough

The background of the Immortal Lions, the blue mages of Aht Urhgan:

The Immortals are the personal guard and the highest ranking soldiers of the leader of the Aht Urghan Empire, currently Empress Nashmeira II. Decades ago Emporer Balrahn feared an uprising of the chimaera, which the Empire used at this time as soldiers and warmachines and had to see how weak his palace guard were, leading to the death of his beloved son. The alchemists which created the chimaera thought just a monster can defeat a monster, so they took the strongest palace guards and tried to make monsters out of them. But after some horrible mistakes where the guards (in lucky cases) died from the transplantations the alchemists decided to stop the biotechnological way and turned to the way of magic: They fused the soul of the monster directly into the spirit of the guards!

These new guards, which wielded a magic called 'blue magic', could embrace the beast within themself and the monster they defeated. Their azure blood drew strength from the enemies they defeated and added them to power of the Blue Mage - the price being horrible pain and the loss of their humanity.

An Immortal never died after a normal livespan. They died in ferocious battle succumbing to their beastly nature ...

So, what is the way to immortality?

Before you do this quest I suggest you visit the Quon continent to gather some items:

  • Dangruf Stone: go to (I-5) in Dangruf Wadi and search a shining spot there. It will give you the Dangrif Stone (may just happen during bright daylight).
  • Siren's Tear: go to (J-8) in North Gustaberg an un-equip all weapons, shields and ammo from you. You will find a ??? which gives you the Siren's Tear. But be careful, it is a very delicate treasure which will slip away when you fight!
  • Valkurm Sunsand: Go to the overturned ship at (H-9) in the Valkurm Dunes (shiver), wait for a sandstorm and then click the ??? to get this item.

Travel to Aht Urghan Whitegate and go to a guy named Waoud at the Heretic's Alley (if it is your first visit to Aht Urghan I recommend buying a map at the vendor in the port), where he stands on top of the middle buildings. Waoud is a diviner which has a rather unique way to tell your future. He will ask you 10 questions. If you anwer correctly, you will start "An Empty Vessel", the BLU flag quest. Here are the questions:

I. What is destiny?

II. Does the accomplishment of a goal require sacrifice and hardship?

III. You hold in your hands a forbidden scroll. Reading it will bring you untold wisdom, but cost all that you own.

IV. If the loss of one life would save ten thousand, would you offer yourself without hesitation?

V. Would you choose a tumultuous life where fame or fortune were attainable, or a tranquil life where both were forever beyond your reach?

VI. You stand on the precipice between life and death. Would you choose to live life as a beast if it would save you from falling into the shadowy abyss of the underworld?

VII. A companion in battle turns against you, raising a weapon to attack.

VIII. A loved one is afflicted with a terrible illness and has little time to live. You are asked to end that life by your own hand.

IX. You are in the midst of a fierce battle. The enemy lying at your feet was once a friend. His breath is ragged and weak.

X. A superior to whom you owe a great debt orders you to act in a way that violates your sense of justice.

The catch is this: there is no 100% 'correct' way to answer this question. When you answer the question think like a Blue Mage might answer - a ruthless beast without mercy but still honourable. For some people a certain set of answers work and for other people not. Perhaps the 'correct' way depends on the race and/or job you have while doing the divination ... but I'm pretty sure there are always 3 correct ways and the chosen way will determine the item you have to pay. For me 'take all bottom answers' worked, others say the right combination is 2-2-3-3-2-1-2-1-2-2

If you answer wrong, he will charge 1000 gil from you and you can do it again one Vana'diel day later. But when all the answers are right, he will see the symbols of the five serpents (Sky, Flame, Stone, Gale and Spring) and ask for no payment. Talk to him until he mentiones something from the Middle Lands (Mindartia / Quon) that he wants: either a golden sand, a red stone, or a blue jewel. Zone and wait a full Vana'diel day, then talk to him again and after that trade him the according item.

Waoud will send you to Aydeewa Subterrane. Go to the Bhaflau Thickets and then walk as far northeast as possible. There you will find the entrance to the Subterrane. Go right until you come to a room where many diremites crawl around. A ramp is there which leads down to a deeper cave where a great blue pool is. Step onto the pool ... and then decide ...

Do you want to get the power of an Immortal? If yes, take his hand...

I started this last night for my Drg sub.
I answered 3-3-3-3-2-1-2-3-2-3, I just answered honestly, to what I'd actually do. And I got it! :P

But I think the combo of my honest answers and how long it took me for the answers were the reason I got it. Seriously, the self sacrifice answers I answered quickly, but the ones that involved friends or how I would react to a betrayel took me longer to answer, not too long but about 5 secs longer (average).

And I'm suprised he told me to go to Wajoam, and didnt actually take the Dangruf Stone from me. I was shocked he didn't want it, he just wanted to "show" someone it.

Also it wouldn't allow me to trade to him, he only said something about the Dangruff Stone after I tried talking to him again.

Don't know if this helps anyone else or if itll be useful at all.

I started the quest long time ago, answered all the questions just never bothered with the items, so I don't remember how I answered. Just finished the quest today, during the cut scene, the hume bald blu said something interesting, did everyone see this script? :
Quote:

??? : Hmph. Her answers were not entirely truthful.
??? : You were the one who transplanted this!
??? : This...
...loathsome Ahriman lens!

The first thing that popped in my head is the Your Crystal Ball quest... I placed an Ahriman lens in there 2 years ago, this quest is still active according to my quest log, so I guess I never went back and check it. The other quest that involves Ahriman lens is Heaven Cent, but I didn't start it.

Just did the Waoud question test

# Feb 24 2007 at 5:27 PM Rating: Decent
Ive been doing this quest ever so slowly, I probably started it 6 months ago, just never got round to finishing it!

i spoke to Waoud, and answered his questions.
i collected all 3 items (i think, if my memory serves me well) traded whichever one he needed.
i didnt do anything for six months...

my quest log says i need to get something from the middle lands...
waoud tells me about some ruins in aydeewa.
so i sneak invis there using a map from atlas website, and nothing????

no ??? to check? just a mosaic pool at the bottom of the ramp but no cutscene????

wtf have i done wrong? help me out, coz ive got the urge to play BLU now & am pissed that i cant do it! asked all my BLU friends & BLUs on server, and theyre no help ; ;
what have i done wrong....
# May 12 2007 at 4:11 PM Rating: Decent
The Same thing happened to me.....the trick is you have to HAVE the item in your inventory when you step in the pool. Took me forever to find this out. Hope it helps.

Is there a fight involved @ Audeewa Subterane or just a CS?
A theory..
# Jan 09 2007 at 5:25 AM Rating: Decent
I'm pretty certain that none of the answers matter except that you must pick "embrace life as a beast". Everyone who has suceeded in this quest has posted as answering as such. Since when you read up on Blue Mages, the story is that they merged the soul of monsters with the guards to make them better fighters, it would make sense that you must answer this in order to unlock the quest. All other reported answers have varied accross the board, so I am beginning to think that is the only answer that matters. If anyone who hasn't yet unlocked the quest feels like testing this theory, I'd be curious to know the results.
A theory..
# Aug 19 2007 at 6:10 PM Rating: Decent
i have tried your theory and yet i still have not opened the quest! i even tried the all bottom theory and still no deal for me. my next chance will be the combination from reply 3 ill try and post to tell you if it worked for me!

I decided to test this theory, choosing to "Embrace Life as a Beast" and I was not able to unlock BLU on that Divination.

I answered everything else as honestly as I could, but chose the "Embrace Life as a Beast" option.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the answers listed for the quest walkthrough do not include the mentioned option. Instead, you pick "If it saves my life..." Also, I figured I may as well give exact combination.

I did a Find... on this page for my combination, 3-3-2-3-3-3-1-3-2-3 and it was not found. I did test your theory, I answered all my others as I would answer honestly myself, except the one about the beast. I answered that as you suggested and got the job quest flagged. Now to sit in the dunes and wait for Sunsand. I picked the other two objects up, and figured I'd be like "eh, i got a 66% chance of getting one of these two" and apparently the odds were against me. Now to wait for a sandstorm >.< Good luck fellow BLU seekers.

I recieved the quest and he says "My colleague is currently part of an Imperial patrol that apprehends desecrators of the ruins found in the Aydeewa Subterane. The Aydeewa Subterrane runs beneath Bhaflau Thickets. May the winds of fortune guide you." So I proceded to go to Aydeewa Subterane to get the cutscene in the blue pool and nothing happened. Did I do something wrong? If anyone can find this out, please reply.

Just finished the question portion of the BLU quest. I answered all 3rd choices, dark day, and i turned in the Siren's Tear.
Question
# Sep 13 2006 at 9:39 PM Rating: Decent
When my friend did blue mage quest and at the end the NPC says,
"I will take something from you, and you may not even notice"

My friend 75BLM/RDM noticed his thunder damage went down.. He did 1781 thundaga 3
on the same day, same food, same gear, same sub... same everything.

After he did blue quest his damage went to 1621 consistantly and once was 1783 but before it was consistant at 1781..

Anyone have any ideas what could have happened.

Question
# Feb 09 2007 at 9:25 PM Rating: Decent
When you read he stole something from you, your mind becomes transfixed with trying to figure out what he stole. You forget about simple things such as the day of the week, weather effects, and mob diffrences.

Just so people don't get nearly as frustrated as I did, this guide is somewhat misleading.

Yes, you have to wait till midnight in-game before getting your fortune read again after a wrong answer, but if you get a correct answer you have to wait till the next in-game day AGAIN to trade him the item.

After he sees all 5 serpents he will talk about what he wants you to get, then say that it's silly of him to request such payment from you and that your reading was free. If you got all 3 items beforehand, you CANNOT trade him the items until the next day.

Once in-game midnight comes around, talk to him again and he will ask if you listened to what he said and he'll ask what his words meant to you. Answer "...inspired me to action." or something to the like and he will ask for the item again. Now you can trade it to him and finish the quest.

I just got really annoyed with this because I had all 3 items and took his quiz for the second time at exactly 0:00 and had to wait ANOTHER hour to give him the item, especially when everywhere I looked it said nothing about waiting another in-game day.

If you plan on farming the items beforehand, I suggest having something to do between quizzes/trading because it really is no fun just standing in front of him for hours on end.

edit: spelling/grammer...argh

Maybe we can figure out what determines which answers work?

Although I had read answering straight 3s would work, I decided to answer honestly and got mine to work on the first try (Most ended up being 3s anyway). I'm a Bastokan male hume. I was asked to get the Siren's Tear.
Quote:
I. What is destiny?

2) Destiny is something that one forges for oneself
Quote:
II. Does the accomplishment of a goal require sacrifice and hardship?

3) Absolutely
Quote:
III. You hold in your hands a forbidden scroll. Reading it will bring you untold wisdom, but cost all that you own.

3) Burn the scroll
Quote:
IV. If the loss of one life would save ten thousand, would you offer yourself without hesitation?

3) Without hesitation
Quote:
V. Would you choose a tumultuous life where fame or fortune were attainable, or a tranquil life where both were forever beyond your reach?

3) A mix of both
Quote:
VI. You stand on the precipice between life and death. Would you choose to live life as a beast if it would save you from falling into the shadowy abyss of the underworld?

3) Embrace life as a beast
Quote:
VII. A companion in battle turns against you, raising a weapon to attack.

1) Brace for the blow
Quote:
VIII. A loved one is afflicted with a terrible illness and has little time to live. You are asked to end that life by your own hand.

3) Grant the request
Quote:
IX. You are in the midst of a fierce battle. The enemy lying at your feet was once a friend. His breath is ragged and weak.

2) End his pain
Quote:
X. A superior to whom you owe a great debt orders you to act in a way that violates your sense of justice.

3) Follow your sense of justice

So my answers were 2-3-3-3-3-3-1-3-2-3. They worked for me and two LS members (both Sandorian Elvaan--One male and one female).

# Jul 26 2006 at 10:52 PM Rating: Decent
We've all been completely overthinking whats going on for this quest. It's the same for every lvl for every job regardless of race or day or whatever. All you have to do is answer the questions with the mindset of a Blue Mage; Honorable and ABSOLUTELY RUTHLESS.

One of the questions is if your friend turns his sword on you in the middle of battle what do you do?(or somethin close to it) I honestly forget the order but the 3 answers are brace for the blow, reason with him, or kill him. So being the ruthless Blue Mage you are, you kill the *******. It's worked for 7 of us all on the first try, so i feel pretty good in saying thats how it works.
