Mission Orders

The fifth verse of "Memoria de la S^tona" has been discovered. Now, with the help of Cid, you must fly beyond the sea of clouds and face Bahamut for what may be the final time...

Walkthrough

Congratulations! You've made it to the infamous airship battle! Be prepared to bust out every bit of skill you have in this game because it's one rough (and time consuming) ride.

This battle consists of three separate fights and you are given a total of 45 minutes to kill all of your enemies. While you may think this sounds like a lot of time, once you're in there time flies like you wouldn't believe.

Recommended medicines:

Yellow liquids (for mammets) CCB Polymer Pumps Vile Elixir Vile Elixir +1 Hi-Potions Hi-Ethers Yagudo Drinks Reraise items

Due to the time constraint, have everyone zone in and watch the cutscene, then exit back out again. This way you can jump right into the battle and save yourself a few precious minutes. If someone leaves the zone, they must view the cutscene again. Make sure your party members know that you are in a time crunch and that they should just jam through the cutscenes in the middle and view them later.

Once everyone is in, turn around and check the airship door and choose the option to continue the battle. You will first face 5 Mammet-22 Zeta, who cannot be slept. Try as much as you can to kill these guys without using any two hours or medicines and most importantly, without dying. If someone dies you should consider just starting the fight over from the beginning. Make sure to use those yellow liquids to lock them into Dragoon mode. These mobs have a lot of AoE attacks so it's best to keep them spread out. Once you have killed all five, you will be taken to an empty airship fully rested and healed. (thank goodness!!) Check the door to view the next cutscene. Jam through it to save on time.

After the cutscene, you will be on the airship with Omega. Omega has many directional AoE attacks, so make sure that he is facing away from your mages. Your white mage will have to be ready with Paralyna and Stona. The CCB Polymer Pump will stop up his gears and make him a little easier to take on, but they only last for a bit, which is why everyone in your party should have one.

It's important to note that you cannot cast for several seconds after using a pump, so do NOT assign your white mage to use a pump as it can mean the death of your tank. It's not recommended to have a NIN tank use it either because the pump takes a while to use. You can have red or black mages or other melee use them and then trade the ones from tanks and healers for the next fight.

After you defeat Omega, you will be taken to another empty ship fully rested and healed. Check the door to view the next cutscene and you will be transported to the airship with Ultima.

Ultima has multiple AoE attacks that Paralyze, Slow, Petrify, and in general just whoop your ass. Hopefully you still have 3-4 CCB Polymer Pumps left for this bad boy because he can get seriously nasty. Make sure EVERYONE has Reraise on and knows that if you decide to wipe, do so where you came in so that you can rest up and have a go at him again.

Maybe it was my imagination, but Lightning weather seemed to make the fight easier.

Once you defeat Ultima, you will find yourself in Lufaise Meadows. Feel free to rifle through the pockets of those pesky Tarutarus and score yourself a Ducal Guard's Ring! They probably stole it from Wolfgang anyway, so don't feel bad.

Beat this thing on the third try, not counting one test run where we didn't use items. Our party set up was

PLD/WAR
BLM/WHM
RDM/SMN
BRD/WHM
WHM/BLM
RNG/NIN (me)

The mammet part of the fight is pretty easy. We had the PLD tank 2, the RDM and BLM each bound one, and I took on the fifth one. The mammets are VERY soft - E-Bow + demon arrows was doing around 250 damage per hit at range (175 up close) and 1600 sidewinders (less up close). An opening barrage plus sidewinder on one just about takes it out. The only real danger here is that a few of them convert to mage and start spamming tier 2 -ga spells, so keep them silenced and/or yellow liquid them in sword/spear form (avoid H2H form because they transmogrify and physical damage heals them.) The PLD had no problem tanking 2 at a time btw. We never had any problems on this part aside from the test run where we had 2 deaths.

Omega proved to be the toughest part. The first 50% always went pretty smoothly but hate always seemed to get out of control in the back half of the battle and he wound up chewing up the mages. I think its because his attack speed goes up as the battle goes on and thus the PLD loses hate faster. I could usually tank him a bit with utsu and hi potions for a bit if I got hate from a sidewinder. Regular shots did about 95 on him and sidewinders 550ish; he has about 14K HP. We wiped on him twice when he had low HP but we were in bad positions to reraise so we had to give up. The time we won we decided to use our first CCB at 26% to avoid the chance of discharger (makes him resist all magic, which he can start using at 25%) and then do a vorpal blade > sidewinder SC bursting flood AM. However the sc got screwed up because the PLD got stunned and then lost hate so we didnt get the burst. We used a second CCB and our BLM manafonted and got him down to about 6% then people started dying. I reraised and EESed him to about 2%, he came over to finish me off but used pile driver instead of a regular attack which was lucky because it took my HP down to 2 but erased hate. A few more arrows killed him. We had 3 people dead at the end of the fight, plus I'd reraised.

We rested to get rid of weakness and headed into Ultima with about 15 minutes left. He turned out to be kind of a pushover. He has fewer HP then Omega (about 12K) and lower def (my attacks were doing about 10% more damage), but hits harder; however with our mage heavy setup + PLD tank that worked out well. We got him to 40% and then started using CCBs (because that's when he starts using Equalizer, which is a nasty WS) and unloaded on him - our flood sc got messed up again due to hate loss but this time our RDM was chainspelling and that helped eat away his HP fast. We killed him with no deaths and only wound up using 2 more CCBs. Note that he does do this plague-thing that eats your TP, which is annoying, if you're a DDer like me. Final total battle time was 38 minutes.

Basically the U/O fights are about hate and resource management for the first part and then dealing massive damage quickly once you get to the parts where they start using their nasty WS (25% for Omega and 40% for Ultima). As ranger, I saved sharpshot + barrage for that part of the fight, and used icarus wings to do self sidewinder > sidewinder SC (though, ironically I didn't wind up using that the time we won because ultima went down so fast.) Keep the bad guys debuffed and dispelled as much as possible, too, it really helps.

It's all downhill from here!

Des, as always, fails to zero in on just how AWESOME I was during this battle. I thought we where friends Des.

Set-up was, as previously posted:

PLD/WAR (ME)
BLM/WHM
RDM/SMN
BRD/WHM
WHM/BLM
RNG/NIN

As usual, the BCNM didn't really start when we entered the battlefeild, and this is something I think is invaluable infromation. For a couple of weeks previous to getting to this mission, me, the redmage, and either the blackmage we used or another blackmage would do the teir one assault in lebros cavern to raise gil. We usually got some hi pots and these potion tanks, a level 50 something equipment that dispensed a hi-potion every minute. We had enough of these for everyone to have one. I basically told everyone to just fill any remaining invetory spaces with hi-potions. On siren, Hi-Pot Tanks cost about 8k, and really saved my *** during the battle, though Des hardly used any of his as I learned when he tried to trade me 10-bajillion after all was said and done.
We cleared the cutscene by viewing it and exiting the BC so it wouldn't eat up precious time, then went back in.
We started buffing with the bard singing ballad to help speed up the MP downtime from that. Our buffs (on me) included, Protect, Shell, Haste, Shining Ruby, Garuda's Shadow Thingies, and Refresh.
Catipulting everyone into the mission, we jammed our fingers through the cutscene (OR AT LEAST YOU BETTER HAVE) and saw one mammet, which soon became five. Redmage and Blackmage binded two, Des I beleive was killing another one with the assistance of the blackmage, while the kept the other two mammets busy, and the whitemage was on cure duty, as per usual. That leaves the two the Paladin will be dealing with.
I initiated the attack by taking the two mammets on the left, provoking one and flashing the other, and continued over to the left corner so I was out of everyone elses aoe range. Something we learned on the test run is to keep the mammets seperated or we all start getting annhilated by AOE's. If you have a Byrnie I suggest using it during this portion of the battle, as the increased damage really helps take out the mammets.
Use vorpal blade, and keep a watchful eye on your HP, everyone elses HP, your MP, and their MP. While this part of the fight can feel like soloing, it's not, and if you see one of your guys about to fall, run out and get a cure on them. They'll be doing the same for you, though you'll mostly be taking care of yourself with your own cures and refresh to back you up.
In the case your mammet DOES use trans-whatever, simply switch to the other mammet until the first one is done being a jack ***.
The deadly blackmage form wasn't too bad, and luckily my mammets tended to stay out of it, or if they entered it I could just take the damage until they went out of it. If you see some high level ga move, and you're a bit worried about it, don't be afraid to shield bash him out of it.
Whatever Mammet you're not fighting be sure to constantly provoke and flash to keep it's attention. Usually everyone finished up their mammets by the time I had the first one dead, and the other one at 5% of health.
Once the mammets are out of the way, it's onto the next round. You instantly get healed to full and your TP resets to 0 (don't bother saving TP during the mammet fight, even if the thing is at 5% and you're a stupid ranger with an E-Bow). We recast whatever buffs went down, and went into the next fight.
Now then, a quick note. Garuda is helpful for these kinds of fights, not so much for the Paladin, if for the mages that don't get many shots to live. It certiantly saved my squishies lives during this fight, wether they realise it or not.
So, by our third time on this, we had learned a few tricks. First off, this guy hits hard (120+ damage a swing), and only gets harder as he begins draining all your VIT to the point where you feel like a ninja without utsusemi. This part really took alot of coperation between me and my whitemage. I would use flash, and then wait for the blind effect to wear and tell my whitemage to use flash. Using this timed flashing method we saved a ******** of MP, and negated a billion more HP. Your enmity also stays up longer because he's not hitting you and making it drop. To further increase my evasion, we had the bard use double mambo on me, which helps significantly.
You'll want to be tanking around where you teleported onto the ship. I ran to the right, while my mages ran off to the left, Des taking the spot Omega was occupying before I got his attention. This has multiple purposes. The first, this guy opens up with a powerful move called guided missles, which does about 300 damage to me, and about 500 damage to anyone else that happened to be in the way. Pull the robot with flash just in case you happen to still be too close to the mages, and follow-up with provoke. The second use is that if everyone dies here, they can re-raise safely without Omega re-deadifying them. Personally, we didn't have to do this, but better to be prepared.
By around 50% things start to get more hectic, and at around 0-30% you'll be struggling to keep hate off of people as it starts getting into a frenzic perminant monk 2 hour mode. I must say, however, I think his accuracy drops during this because I could evade a good portion of his attacks.
I used my CCB before the evil 20% so that he never has a chance to render our blackmage useless.
As mentioned, the blackmage was to burst flood and that should have been the end of it. However, luck was not so kind, or simply wanted to ***** with me first, and stunned me so I couldn't use vorpal in time to open the skill chain before flood went off. Regardless, our blackmage shot out flood, and gained hate. Des finished the skill chain and it was now nearly dead. Our blackmage fell, reraised, two houred, and started charging up another spell while Omega had his way with the rest of our party. The blackmage blew him up to 6%, I died somewhere inbetween, Des reraised as mentioned, eagle eyed, got a lucky weaponskill, and shot him to death while the rest of us gritted our teeth in anticipation.
Since we had all used reraise items before entering the fight, getting up and waiting for weakness didn't take long at all. We went into the fight with about 15 minutes left.
Ultima, compared to Omega, was a push over. Not only that, but we had 4 whole CCB's left, and I think at least 1 of them wasn't even used. While he DOES hit a tiny bit harder (about 20-40 damage more), he also strike MUCH slower, and so I have to say that he actually deals *less* damage than his counter-part. The fight went pretty smoothly, CCB's going off at around 40%. I kept hate pretty well during this fight actually, and was even celebrating early knowing victory was just a few minutes away.
I got the message from our redmage he was gonna two hour, so I popped invincible and let him fly. Suggest that anyone with a two hour left that does damage to use it at this time, though I figure that's kinda obvious.
Pretty simple fight compared to the hell you just went through, and really, I beleive the hardest part about this portion of the fight is, "Do we have enough time?"

I post this mostly as a Paladin guide, noting some useful things I learned during the fight. I know most Paladin are discouraged by CoP, feeling it's more of a blink tanking event, so I feel compelled to tell the other side of it. To this day I've done every CoP mission as my tried and true PLD/WAR, and urge other Paladin to keep going through CoP, despite what the mass number of critics say about blink tanking's superiority. Eventually, you'll stop thinking about how hard a mission is for you, and rather what strategy you need to use to beat it, until every mission just feels like a puzzle you've yet to solve.

Besides, those rings kick ******* ***.

This battle was probably the most difficult, and yet most entertaining, that i have ever taken part in during my FFXI career.

It's very intimidating, and very frightining. The importance of speeding through the cutscenes cannot be stressed enough, and the importance of speed and skill during the battles is also just as important.

We ended up completing the fight with a setup of NIN/WAR, DRK/THF, WAR/NIN, RDM/WHM and 2 BLM/WHM. On our winning run, we only wiped once during Omega. However, we did fail the battle several times, using different setups. I think we lost the fight 7 or 8 times before finally pulling through.

Many folks say that this battle is impossible without the help of a WHM, and Erica's CoP guide stresses this fact as well. (which is where most people get their CoP mission info.) I'm convinced that she said it was impossible sans-whm simply because she herself is a WHM main. We had no whm, and no stona, and we only met with petrify once...and it came from omega not ultima o.O So if you don't have a WHM available, all hope is not lost. You can do it just fine without one.

Good luck to you all, and most importantly HAVE FUN! this mission is incredible.
