Mission Orders

Board the newly repaired airship and head for the fifth mothercrystal. Will your path be intercepted by Nag'molada? The dreadful wyrms? Or a completely unexpected opponent...?

Walkthrough

For this battle you will be fighting Tenzen while the three tarutaru brats heal him, nuke you, and shoot holes in you. You cannot do any damage to the Tarutarus so this fight is similar to the battle with Snoll Tzar in that you have to just go in there and slam him with everything you have as fast as possible.

Protectra, Shellra, Reraise, food, and TP can all be raised outside the battlefield in Sealion's Den. When you are all ready, zone in and watch the cutscene. You will then be on the airship with Tenzen waiting. The three Tarutarus are right behind you but will not attack until you engage Tenzen.

During the battle, Tenzen will eventually eat a shogun rice ball and his stats and defense will increase significantly. For this reason, you should do as much damage as you possibly can before he eats it. At some point after he eats the rice ball he will 2-hour and begin skillchaining. His final weaponskill, Cosmic Elucidation, will do massive damage to everyone and eject you from the battlefield. It does not matter if someone is still alive, you failed the mission if he gets this weaponskill off.

You do not need to completely kill Tenzen, but since it is unknown at what point he gives up, plan on going all the way. Once you defeat him, you will be treated to the longest cutscene ever and at the end, you'll zone into Al'Taieu.

This battlefield is now 75 capped, meaning you lose all buffs and tp upon entering the battlefield.

I hear that they removed the final skillchain move thing that makes you lose the fight, though, so I guess it's a lot easier now.

can confirm the Cosmic Elucidation is still in there and it still kicks you from the BC. i know cause i went 1/2 last night. he hit us with this WS and we got kicked. changed things around for the 2nd fight...everyone went as a melee and we just rushed his ***. mnk/nin drk/nin war/nin drg/sam bst/nin blm/nin. didnt give him enough time to use his 2hr. this worked great...just gotta kill fast and u wont need any healing magic. opo-opo necklace/sleep TP at start. everyone WS then IC wing> 2hr and WS again and u got 1 dead Tenzen.
Too Easy!!!

We did a test run and end up killing Tenzen on first try. Didn't even use any 2 hour. This fight was so easy and SE is going to make the it even easier? That's just lame. Maybe after the update, people can sneeze and kill Tenzen. >.>

Worse part about this fight is those stupid kids. What ever u do....What ever u do... DO NOT FIGHT BY THE AREA U SPAWN AT! This is the perfect spot for those little bastards to nuke u and cure tezen at will. This will make the fight very very hard.

Setup:
rng/war (Countalucard)
blm/rdm (Nitta)
mnk/war (Jayeon)
whm/blm (Gaido)
drg/war (Obiron)
nin/war (Dyrk)

Items:
sleeping pots (for getting tp outside)
Icarus wings
RR items

1st run:
The zerk command was given and we went ape ****. mnk 2hrs off the bat and I let go the most insane sidewinder I've ever fired in my rng days (berserk, warcry, flashy shot and sharpshot went). As soon as I fired, that little taru sleepga II all of us. all of our momentum went to a halt. Tezen comes over and does 700 dmg on to me. we wake up (barely) and tenzen gets a cure IV. I tried to fire off a barrage, but it missed, (still don't kno why >.>;) and Tenzen ends me. he's about at 40% when i dropped. and he starts his 2hr. (I never saw him eat the riceball) Another random blizzaga II wiped out the mages, and the Comsic Elucidation doing about 1000dmg wiped out the rest. The nin somehow was able to stay alive, and we got kicked out.

2nd run:
So some silly idea came into my head that we should let the ninja tank...

We go in, and we rush to the spot Tezen stands. popped some poison pots and just as i thought, no more random nukes. I saw a cure IV being casted on Tenzen, but then I saw that he was too far away. there were no 2hrs to be done, so we just went and did what damage dealers do. Beat the hell out of him. At 50% we unleashed WS hell. Fight ended with a Penta thurst > Sidewinder = Transfixion combo.

And Nitta takes the 1st sea death by pissing off a UFO >.>;
Glitch or Luck

I don't know how this was possible, but it happened and I have sea. I fought Tenzen once before and he did his Cosmic Elucidation and we all got kicked out of BC. So 2nd time around we were more prepared to do greater dmg faster. Well what do you know! Tenzen goes to 10% HP does Cosmic Elucidation, and I say to myself Son of a B^tch!!!! BUT he gave up AFTER Cosmic!!!! We won! I don't know how it happened, but like I said he DID do cosmic and we all took dmg from it but he gave up afterwards. The only thing different this time around was the WHM put DIA on him. So maybe dot spells really ***** with him. Just a glitch or pure luck either way GL with CoP.
Rough guide to beating this mission

After helping with this mission quite a few times, I've come up with a few rough findings. These may not be 100% accurate (this is, after all, one of the least understood fights in the game), but they've served as a good enough guide to get the wins on the last couple of runs quite easily.

- Tenzen's Meikyo Shishui appears to be on a timer. It does not always end in Cosmic Elucidation. Whether or not he ends on Cosmic Elucidation seems to depend on his hp at the time he uses his 2hr. If his hp is above about 65%, he will not end with Cosmic Elucidation.

- If Tenzen's first 2hr does not end with Cosmic Elucidation, he will use another 2hr approximately 15-20 seconds after the end of his first skillchain. By this point, he will almost certainly be below the threshold for using Cosmic Elucidation.

- Cosmic Elucidation *cannot* be stopped by disrupting the skillchain by normal means. Even if you shadowbind him and pull back mid-chain before he uses it, he will still do his final weaponskill, resulting in Cosmic Elucidation the moment he gets back within range of somebody.

- Tenzen's rice ball is also on a timer. On some of the faster runs I've done, he never uses this. In general, he seems to use it between his first and second 2hrs.

The strategy I've come up with for this fight, which seems fairly reliable, is:

1) At the start of the fight, do not go all-out on Tenzen immediately. Fight him at a relatively normal pace until he hits 80% hp. If you go too fast at this stage, there is a danger that he will end his first 2hr with Cosmic Elucidation.

2) At 80% hp, he should be about ready to begin his first 2hr. At this point, you can go all out on him. His first 2hr should end without causing Cosmic Elucidation.

3) From this point onwards, just keep up as much damage as you can, as fast as you can. Any second 2hr he does will definitely result in Cosmic Elucidation.

4) He seems to give up at around 20-25% hp. However, I'm fairly certain there's a slightly random factor which determines this level - on some runs, I've seen him give up significantly earlier than on others.

Hope this helps. As I say, there's a chance that this fight is just random and that none of the above is actually true, but we have managed to get a few easy wins by following that route, while this fight had always been tricky for us before we came up with that strat.
Of Skillchains and Battlefield Ejections

This is not entirely accurate.

If Cosmic Elucidation kills everyone still alive at the point it occurs, you will not be ejected from the battlefield.

Ejection will only occur if people are still alive after it goes off.

Tenzen will, however, regenerate to 100% HP, and if he's already eaten the Riceball his defense will be approximately double what it is normally, so you're probably better off exiting the battlefield and coming back regardless.
