Summary

Carbuncle wants you to visit all the protocrystals and gather the elemental energy of the sleeping gods. Will their imminent awakening mean fortune or doom for Vana'diel? Only Carbuncle's ancient friend at the Full Moon Fountain may know...

Walkthrough

You must be able to summon all 6 terrestrial avatars (Garuda, Leviathan, Titan, Ramuh, Shiva, and Ifrit) in order to begin this quest. Speak to Carbuncle at the stones in La Theine Plateau to receive the key item Rainbow Resonator.

You can take up to 18 people into the BCNM. It is recommended you have at least 12. Your group will need to defeat each avatar to receive a key item:

Eye of Flames (Ifrit)
Eye of Frost (Shiva)
Eye of Gales (Garuda)
Eye of Storms (Ramuh)
Eye of Tremors (Titan)
Eye of Tides (Leviathan)

After the group has all 6 key items, head to Full Moon Fountain. You will receive a cutscene upon zoning in. Choose the battle "Waking the Beast". Inside you will fight against Carbuncle Prime.

Once Carbuncle's HP reaches 75%, he will disappear and a random avatar will appear to fight. Defeat it to bring Carbuncle back out. At 50%, he will disappear again and this time will summon two random avatars. At 75%, three avatars will appear. When you have defeated these last three avatars, 5 Carbuncles with 25% HP will appear. If you can kill all 5 of these, you will win the battle and receive a key item called a Faded Ruby. Items may drop during the battle.

Finished 5/23/08
on Bismarck Server
Diablo 75SMN 75 DRK
Carbuncle's Pole reward from quest
BCNM drops each weapon, depending on..
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT
Duting the Cutscene, after you beat the final Carby
Chose the option to give the stone back, not keep it.
You will still get the Carby Pole but Carby will reward pt with a Weap.
TP Bonus on weapon is AMAZING!! I hit for 95-127 dmg and it adds 38-56 dmg Light damage every other hit while carby is out. and Spirit Taker, which adds MP varying on dmg., does 268+ with staff, and 68-108 dmg without.
Any questions about it lemme know,

Does this quest give you a title, completing a hard/tedious quest like this should give you a title.
title

This quest gives 2 titles depending on how you respond to one of the final CS. "Disturber of Slumber" and "Interrupter of Dreams" Name changer in Seplina can change it back for you.
fun

Hey guys, wanted to give a little more information on the quest.

Rewards Not Listed:
Titan's Baselard (Dagger)
Leviathans Couse (Polearm)
Carbuncle Cuffs (Hands)
Ifrit's Bow (Duh)

Drop is 1 item per party, with a rumored chance of it being more.

The writeup says minimum 12 ppl required. This is true, however full alliance is recommended. We primarily went after the HQ primes with a full alliance consisting of 12-15 SMN, remaining spots were used for refreshers and/or BLM. I could see where a zerg setup could work but not without RDM/DRK, or BLM for stun support and elemental control. Elementals cast -AGA/IV repeatedly; simultaneously curing the Prime and destroying whoever has hate, and are refreshed (brought back to life or HP replenished) whenever the Prime uses one of the Merit BPs. This causes for interesting scenarios when fighting avatars that can already cure themselves. If I can recall fighting Garuda till 1%, and not being able to do enough dmg with the SMN that were still alive to finish it off. That loss actually prevented a cpl of ppl from meeting the Carbuncle deadline, subsequently, a cpl of my close friends dont have their Carby pole. But I digress.

Carby Fight is worth the drama. Fun as hell. I say split the alliance into groups for each stage of the fight. 2 groups for the 2 avatars and into 3 groups for the set of 3 avas. This turned out to be the deciding factor as kiting the 2 Avatars was killing our kiters fast. The Avatars in this fight are suprisingly low in HP. Your main concern is Astral Flow which is surprisingly powerful. Hopefully you have bards who can Carol the appropriate element, or someone /whm for party -ra spells.

When it comes to Carby, the only tricky part is when theres 5. my advice: kite 2 with the knowledge that the kiters will probably die within a cpl mins. reason being you will want to keep the 3 you are fighting in the 3 corners of Full Moon Fountain(1.Entrance, 2&3. The Extreme Left & Right of where The mobs Spawn behind the rocks). Kiters drag carbys in opposite directions in and out of hallway, all the way to the fountain and back. The whole idea behind this is to expose as few ppl as possible to multiple searing lights. It is quite possible to recover without death from a single SL, but 2-3 in rapid succession will wipe you.

"Rapid Succession" you say? Yes. It seems with this fight the Avatars Astral Flows are somewhat coordinated. I believe it is connected to their HP. The avatars will Astral Flow together when there are more than one. It seems that in the event one of them is close to being KOd or has just been KOd is what triggers AF. So when you get close to killing one... let the other pt know b/c that should give some ppl a chance to run for safety leaving the tank, or if you go the smn route to stay further away :p

Ok, ok, i gotta go soon so ill wrap it up.

Order of Difficulty IMO of HQ Primes(Hardest to Easiest) with the least amt of ppl we have ever beat it with:
Garuda (16)
Shiva (16)
Leviathan (15)
Ramuh (15)
Titan (12)
Ifrit (12)

I think Ifrit was beat in like 8 mins one time... it was sad.

We had to implement a "Wave" System against Ramuh *Thanks to Chelsea for the help* because paralyzed avatars are pretty useless. Half of the alliance would assault the other half would rest.

The whispers and eyes are 2 different things and they have nothing to do with each other.

The rainbow resonator will not replace tuning forks.

2 bows and 1 baselard dropped for us.

*THEORY*

I believe in order to get the max 3 drops from this BC there has to be 1 person who needs the quest in each party of the alliance. This is why you will see the drops range from 1-3. I have never heard of this fight dropping more than 3. Jinirin, BtL's SMN, told me its possible the drop #s could be based off of the total # of new ppl, but I have not confirmed this beings as everyone in our alliance was "new" by definition. another interesting tidbit is the items didnt show up in the treasure pool until the respective pts were done with the ending CS. meaning, not all 3 items showed up in the treasure pool they kinda appeared one at a time, indicating to me that they corresponded to a particular member exiting the BC and completing CS, perhaps the pt leader. idk.

*THEORY*

After Completing the Carby BC you do not have to redo the HQ PRIMES. However, like the HQ Primes will need someone who has the Resonator, but not the corresponding eye to initiate battle. If my first theory is right then you will have to find 3 new ppl everytime in order to farm this BC.

Meh... idk... if theres anything else you are wondering about, let me know. Ryuko's write up helps alot, as well.

Yes the drops all come from the final fight against carbuncle prime and have a fairly low drop rate I think. And yes, blu can use a shiva's shotel, its still considered the best sword for that job.
Questions about this
# Apr 05 2007 at 11:37 AM Rating: Decent
I have some questions. It seems that the Ifrit Bow is not a reward item similar to the other avatar fights. Am I correct, and is the Ifrit Bow a random drop which isn't 100% during the final fight? Also, do you need to get the Eye of flames, tremors, etc. key item each time you want to do the final fight? Or do you get the key items once only, and are able to do the fights after the timer requirement lets you?

Ok just wondering, but are the weapons for specific avatars a random% drop or if it's a choice like normal avatar battles. And if not is it repeatable? I'm mainly wondering cuz I really REALLY want Shiva's Shotel for my Blu.
Avatar Weapons?
# May 05 2007 at 9:51 PM Rating: Decent
I think there is a random chance that between 0 and 2 of the other avatar weapons will drop. Also, I hate to disappoint you but I don't think BLU can use Shiva's Shotel.
Standard Avatar prime fights
# Feb 12 2007 at 7:44 PM Rating: Decent
Hello

Does anyone know if you can still do the standard avatar prime fights if you have the key item Rainbow Resonator?

I'm hoping that when you touch the crystal it allows you to select the standard avatar prime fite rather than the avatar with his four elementals. If anyone knows how this works, I would appreciate it if you could post and let us know.

Thanks

iirc, when this quest first came out and some info was actually found out about it, there was confirmation that you could trade the Faded Ruby to the ??? in LaTheine which started the quest, and you would get Carbuncle's Staff. That is all i remember unfortunately >.< good luck

It allows you to get the Carbuncle's Pole weapon from the ??? in La Theine Plateau and the final cs.

You trade the ruby back to the Carbuncle ??? in La Theine Plateau in order to claim your Carbuncle Pole reward. Everyone who completes the final BCNM can get a Carbuncle's Pole.
