not repeatable
# Jan 27 2004 at 2:52 AM Rating: Default
I just tried this quest twice in a row and unless there is some sort of timer that prevents you from completing it again really soon, then it is not repeatable. So now I'm stuck with a bunch of fish and an extra clock :) Perhaps I'll try again later...

When you come back with your second Clock, you need to talk to her to get the quest again before trading it to her.

The clock is (Rare) therefor you cant carry more then one.. Hightail it back to Melanie and trade her the clock. then run back out and re-activate Bernie. repeat to your hearts content.

In 1 hour you can make about 5k and you will get fame for every time you complete the quest.

I gave this repeat a shot, and I cannot do a whole stack of Quus in an hour... it's taking me 10-12 minutes to get from Malene, get the clock, and back to her again... I see other guys on the way, and if they're going faster, they're not telling me how. I have the Mog shortcut quest done so my route goes like this:

Malene
Mog House to Mines
Mines to S Gusta
Lighthouse
Mines to Mog House to Markets
Malene
Port Bastok (need to zone to get quest again?)
Malene (new quest started)

This seems like the best route, yet it still takes me at least 10 minutes from start to finish. If someone knows a faster way, please let me/us know!

On the OTHER hand, this fight is really useful for me. I'm a 15 WHM, and Bubbly Bernie helps increase my club skill and my divine magic skill (from casting Banish) and doesn't give me any problems (only used cure once in one battle out of 6). So fame, gil, skill bonuses=AWESOME.

EDIT: I changed my route a bit and saved like 3 minutes per run (or something). Since Bernie drops the Steam Clock regardless of whether you have the quest or not, you don't have to zone and get the quest again before going to kill him. Instead, you just have to talk to Malene when you get back to get the quest, then immediately hand her the clock. Whew, I'm so dumb. Glad I'm starting to get things done faster.

Not only do you not speak to dalzaak, but he is also not in the second house. You go to the 2nd level of the first house by the west gate. There you will find Gwill. Gwill is dalzaaks little peon and he is the one that tells you to lure the monster out with a quus. I spent a good 10 minutes wondering why dalzaak was not in the second building. Good job on the false info.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 21 2004 at 4:45 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Dalzaak that F*ER, is in the second house next to the west gate in bastok markets. you have no idea how infuriated i was when i was checking every damn NPC in bastok for him. omg..i wanted to smack that F*er.

Be Careful!! On Bismarck server there is a guy named Dariathus fishing by Bernie pop spot. He provoked Bernie right out from under my nose when i went to do the quest today and ignored me when I told him he owed me a quus. Just be really fast after you put down your quus or you risk losing Bernie to this jerkoff.

how much does the clock sell for?
RE: how much
# Feb 12 2004 at 11:07 AM Rating: Default
No. it sells for 500-600. On Carbuncle server anyway.. why would you waste 446 gil to sell it at the AH when you can just quest it for 500 every time.
RE: how much

You don't need to have the quest to get Bubbly Bernie to appear and get the steam clock
Dalzaak and Quus
# Dec 17 2003 at 4:48 PM Rating: Decent
Dalzaak's house is above the Item Shop in Bastok Market area. Dalzaak is not there, but his housekeeper named Gwill is there. He is the one that tells you that you need a quus (fish).

darnfournr implied that you actually don't need to talk to Dalzaak in order to complete the quest. I suspect this is correct but I'm not positive.

Fishing is very time consuming and difficult at the lower levels (I spent hours using different fishing equipment and locations and strategies and never caught anything, just broke rods and wasted a lot of time). So, I highly recommend getting quus from the Auction House or from Selbina if you can make it that far.

this is a repetable quest, but, im not sure if 'quues' is the item to trade with the "???" every time. ive read places where the item is 'pot', but i cant find 'pot' anywhere in the AH.. so i also need to find dalzakk.. hes knowwhere to be found. I start asking random people and ******* players start getting pissed because they think im a newbie.. but the truth is, ive compleated 34 quests and have done many of the 4-10 times.. i would like to do this quest over and over, but i cant find dalzakk!!

Forgte about Dalzakk.

Talk to Malene, buy or catch soem quus, go to lighthouse . trade with bushes in back called "???" and it spawns Bubly bernie. Kill it, get the clock.
Go back to malene and trade the clock. get 500 gil..

I'm lvl 13 thief, mithra and i go from 180 HP to 50 HP.. so lvl 8 might be pushing it.. 10 seems a little better.. Bernie is a tough one..
Where's Dalzakk?
# Nov 17 2003 at 11:37 AM Rating: Default
What happened to the step where we're supposed to speak with adventurer Dalzakk? And where is this guy? I assume he's the one that tells us to go fishing for the Quus and what bait to use?
RE: Where's Dalzakk?
# Aug 29 2004 at 9:07 PM Rating: Decent
Forget Dalzakk. The house you find Gwill in (above the armors shop near the South Gustaberg exit) is Dalzakk's house. Go there and talk with Gqill to learn you need quus. Since you already know that from this site, don't even bother walking up the stairway because you can complete the quest any mount of times without ever talking to Gwill. I just got 12k today off of this quest. Man EnBlizzard and expensive on Shiva. :(

RE: How difficult is he?
# Aug 24 2004 at 9:13 PM Rating: Decent
In my opinion, a melee class can take bernie at lvl 10 without too much difficulty. Mages, in my experience should wait till lvl 11-12 for that ease in victory.

Bush in the back

It's a bush along the back of the Lighthouse. Just mouse over every bush you see growing along the outer wall. You'll find it. Good luck.
Quus
# Nov 09 2003 at 7:34 AM Rating: Default
Just buy a quus from the AH they go for about 200gil. That's 300 gil profit from the reward.

I've been trying to figure this one out but how do you start fishing in this game? I know you need to get a fishing rod and bait but haven't been able to find one anywhere in Bastok.

Since the update, fishing rods can now be found in the AH under Weapons, Fishing Gear (cuz you equip it in your ranged weapon slot I guess) and the lures are in Ammo.

There is a person who sells willow fishing rods and lugworms in bastok port. He is one of the vendors, it should be easy for you to find him.

if you still havent figured it out you go near water and type "/fish" without the quotations. you must have a the fishin pole equiped in your range slot, and bait inthe ammo slot. peace.
