Help nurse the chocobo back to health. It seems to have suffered both mentally and physically. Gausebit wildgrass may do the trick.

The first time you talk to Brutus, he will give you the quest "Chocobo on the Loose!" After watching the cutscene, talk to him again to get the quest "Chocobo's Wounds."

You absolutely MUST be at least level 20 to do this quest. Anyone who tells you otherwise is mistaken. Brutus will not give you the quest if your current job level is lower than 20.

After talking to Brutus (or before, whatever), you need to get four clumps of Gausebit Wildgrass. You will try and feed the sick chocobo the grass. You can get the grass by killing Wadi Hares in Dangruf Wadi, or Crane Flies in Meriphataud Mountains. You can also buy Gausebit Wildgrass off of the Auction House. It is listed under Weapons -> Ammo & Misc -> Pet Items. (Yes, Chocobo food is listed under the Weapons category. -_-)

Many players often get confused and think that you're supposed to feed the chocobo Gysahl Greens instead of Gausebit Wildgrass. This is wrong. Gysahl Greens will not work. You have to feed the chocobo Gausebit Wildgrass.

The quest can take up to six real world hours to complete. You must feed (or attempt to feed) one clump of Gausebit Wildgrass to the Chocobo every game day (one game day is equal to about one hour in real life). If you feed one clump at the end of a game day, you do not have to wait a full hour to feed the next clump. You only need to wait until the next game day. However, if you feed a clump at the beginning of a game day, then you WILL have to wait a full hour, since you will have to wait for the next game day before you can attempt to feed the Chocobo the next clump of grass.

In total, you must attempt to feed the Chocobo six times. However, you will only need four clumps of grass because the Chocobo will refuse your first two attempts.

Day 1 - The Chocobo rejects the food and refuses to eat.

Day 2 - The Chocobo rejects again (1 real hour later).

Day 3 - The Chocobo will accept this time (1 real hour later).

Day 4 - The Chocobo eats again (1 real hour later).

Day 5 - The Chocobo will eat again (1 real hour later).

Day 6 - The Chocobo will eat for the final time and you will get the license.

You do not have to be logged in every hour to do this quest, and they do not have to be consecutive hours, either. In other words, you can feed the chocobo once, then log off for several hours, then come back and feed the next clump of grass. Also, you cannot go up and continuously try to feed all four clumps of grass to the chocobo at once. You must wait at least one real-life hour (or until the next game day) between each feeding attempt.

I started the first part of feeding the Chocobo last night then I had to turn the game off for the night. I have five step left to do but this will now have to be accomplished over the course of the weekend. Because of the delay in the second step will this effect the quest? I did note down the day I started it which was waterday so will I just need to wait till the consecutive next day to carry on with the feeding?

When I first spoke to Brutus, he gave me the Chocobo on the Loose quest. I zoned out and went back to try for the Chocobo Wounds quest, but it didn't work. So then I spoke to the Galka Silver Tail, and when I went back to Brutus he finally gave me the quest.

I guess you have to try all sorts of things before he finally gives it up.

See posts by Thypointblank, Germanone, and Turnerman for how to be sure of getting the Chocobo's Wounds quest, and ZackKnightblade's post and the Chocobo Egg quest listing for how to complete that quest. Neither quest conflicts with the other, i.e. if you start either one, it does not prevent you starting the other. Neither is a pre-requisite of the other, i.e. either can be completed before the other. Disclaimer/ Credit: All this I got from looking at this section, so you don't have to. All the people who I got the info from can take credit for posting it; I don't get to. They take the blame if the info is wrong, so I don't have to.

I just wanted to clarify for everyone...

There are a few posts saying that minimum level for flagging this quest is not 20. I hate to break it to you, but it is in fact 20. And not a single experience point before can you flag this quest.

It's hella easy (btw lol) btw (lol) lol.

Thanks a lot for this info. I recently got my wife playing, and she just got lvl 20. I escorted her to jeuno for her chocobo quest, and I was quite confused as Brutus gave a different quest! I asked around, and finally decided to look on alla.

As soon as she talked to Silver Tail, the quest immediately flagged.

Thanks again!

You get the Chocobo Wounds quest and the Chocobo on the Loose quest from Brutus. Just keep talking to him. You can do both at the same time, of course doing the Cocobo Wounds quest first will make the Chocobo on the Loose quest a lot easier.

The feeding should be done each Vanadiel day. While it is true that each Vanadiel day is roughly 1 earth hour, it is not necessary true that the first 2 feedings should be an hour apart.

For example: suppose that you make your first feeding on Darksday 22:34 time. Then, your next available feeding time is on Firesday, any time. Thus, technically speaking, you can have first 2 feedings only few minutes apart.

Now suppose, after the second feeding you are done for the day and log out. Next time you log in (assuming at least an hour has passed since your last log in) you are good to feed the chocobo. If you plan your log in time close to the end of Vanadiel day, it is possible to have another few min apart feeding times based on the same principle.

I hope this helps a bit.

Chocobo on the Loose

Now this is not a new extension of the old Chocobo Lisence quest. This is a new quest that allows you to start raising Chocobos and gives you your first egg.

When speaking to Brutus you will be given these two options:
(Choose to Feed)
(Wait for Brutus)

If you select (Choose to Feed) your chocobo will run off and Brutus will suggest La Thiene. Now this is were most of us got stuck because of info.

E4 La Thiene. A set of "Chocobo Tracks" sit next to the mountian. When you click on them a cut scene will begin. The chocobo from Jeuno meets a mysterious wild chocobo in the field. When he sees you he comes back to you and the wild "Bo" takes off.

From here you return to Brutus to bring the Bo back and tell him what happens. From there another Cutscene begins and word or a meeting in Sandoria is brought up.

Next on your things to do list is travel to the Chocobo stables in Southern Sandoria. Inside the stables to the left and up a flight of stairs is an Elf named Hantileon. A meeting will begin and after a bunch of debating you will be given three options. Dispite what you say all your ideas will be shot down. You'll have to select all three.

Go back to Jeuno and talk to Brutus and he will give you a (bit)Chocobo Egg.

Don't worry - if you chose to free the chocobo, just talk to Brutus a few more times until he asks you if you want to ride a Chocobo. You will then use the details on this quest and it will tell you to keep trying until the choco trusts you. And YES - it's gausebit grass.

I talked to Brutus in Jeuno Upper and I had the option to free the chocobo or wait for Brutus. I decide to free the chocobo! The chocobo ran to La Theine Plateau and I have no idea where I can find it! Now i have the quest "Chocobo on the loose". Does anyone know where can I find the chocobo?
Later I talked again to Brutus and I got the quest “chocobo’s wounds”

Yes, I think a lvl 20 war can handle a Wadi rabbit. I just got back from a hellish trip in getting those Gausebit grass clumps - and I'm at 21war/10mnk. The rabbits can link, so watch out. Go to Dangruf Wadi...go into an area that has geisers...and ride the geiser up to the next level. You should find the Wadi rabbits there. Be sure you can handle Goblin Tinkerers and Ambushers, because they patrol the area. The place is crawling with them. Also, you have to be patient in getting the grasses...the rabbits don't drop them all the time. If you have a whm friend, take them along. Oh, it helps if you have a map of the Bastokan region...I winged it without a map. I thing you DO NOT want to do.

Wrong. Those are Gyashi Greens sold by the Chocobo Stables merchant. The only places you can get Gausebit Grass are Meriphataud Mountains from Crane Flies and Dangruf Wadi from Wadi Hares.

During the Chocobo's Wounds quest, you cannot turn in Gyashi Greens (or any other type of Greens for that matter). The Chocobo at the stables will only eat Gausebit Grass after the 2'nd attempt (2'nd day).

Dangerous run? ..meh.
# Jun 17 2006 at 1:32 AM Rating: Decent
Just thought I'd leave a quick comment on this quest.

My girlfriend and I reached our first level 20's last night, and were all psyched up to get our chocobo licenses. We just didn't know -how- to get to Jenuo. We're both new players. A lot of the world we haven't seen yet.

We did, however, know we needed Gauzebit grass, thanks to a friend in game. Thanks to all the Beehive Chips we had gotten while in Giddeus, buying 8 pieces of the stuff was easy.

As for the run; We both just reached 20. We didn't want to die and lose it.. but we wanted to ride those birds. NOW. Solution? Change to level 1 jobs! If this run is really so dangerous, and we're going to die anyway, why not die with something that doesn't matter?

SO! We set out from Windurst. One naked Hume THF/MKN, and one Elvann BLM/MKN carrying a big stick. Both at level 1.

The trip itself? PAINFULLY EASY. We made it to Jeuno within 30 minutes at the very most. Didn't die once. Until Champagin, we stuck strictly to the path, and had zero monster problems. Once in Champagin, we had to do a fair bit more dodging and darting, but still made it around anything that got even remotely in our way.

Was it heart pounding and nerve-wracking running behind rocks and down hills to hide from huge groups of Yaggudo and Goblins and Skinks that would HORRIBLY maim a level 1 character on sight? You bet! But then again.. isn't that what a good adventure is supposed to be like?
Dangerous run? ..meh.

The grass is dropped off Wadi Hares in dangruf wadi. When i did this the grass dropped about evry one out of 5 hares.

I just did this quest for a third character. This time I bought the grass in Bastok for 1K each. The other two times, I farmed it in Dangruf Wadi. The Hares were fairly numerous, but the drop rate was pretty poor. Still better than buying it in Jeuno. You can farm the grass from Crane Flies in Meriphataud Mountains also, but the flies are tougher.

Rumor has it that the new level cap to log this quest is 15. The chocobo riding level remains unchanged, however. It would be great if this is true...first-timers wont have to worry about de-levelling on the way to Jeuno, and bein unable to log the quest.

I will confirm this asap.

I do not understand why everyone always says "Go to Dangruf Wadi."

No. It is not the easiest way to get these things, unless you're doing it alone.

Simpler is to go beat up some Crane Flies in Meriphataud Mountains. They spawn in 57 points around Meriphataud, most of which are around the outpost. If you take out about twenty you'd be extremely unlucky to not have four by then.

Dangruf Wadi, on the other hand, is difficult to get to, has only 26 Wadi Hare spawns throughout the entire area, all spread out exceptionally thinly, and I've yet to get four grasses just from one clearance.

The single downside to Meriphataud is that the Crane Flies are 18-21, which means the player completing the quest will probably need help from friends or linkshell members.

Thats why Final Fantasy XI is loosing people the prices of things are ridiculous. Im not that much of a new player anymore but Ive had to help and give gil to so many new players because half of them are like above lvl10 and still have lvl1 armor and weapons making money is hard as **** in Final Fantasy XI thats why people buy gil. Im not even going to lie i did it twice but now I can make about 50k a day while I only play like 2-5 hours a day less on weekdays. People are jacking up prices for no reason.

not really it's just that most people are to lazy to realize what they need and how to get it. You can easily take a craft the first ten levels of any craft and make a **** load more money. It's not the prices that are driving people away it the fact that you actually have to do something to earn the money. Lazy people my friend, lazy people.

Sorry, but that's how supply and demand works. Players want a Chocobo License and can't be bothered to farm it, they should expect to pay the price.

In fairness, yes, once a level 20/10 person is in Jeuno they've no easy way to get back to Dangruf Wadi without the need to be taken back to Jeuno a second time, meaning the market is quite captive, but that's still the fault of the buyer for lacking foresight to get the grass before making their first trip.

For all you people buying grass, I suggest you buy it in bastok. I bought mine in bastock with prices at about 2k a piece. Price history before was also showing about 2k a piece. In Jeuno I checked the prices and they were averaging around 4k. Since many people make the trip from Bastok (from my experiance thats the easiest way) due to korroloka being right there, its a quick stop on the way. However, there were only 6 pieces of grass in bastok where as there were 30 in Jeuno. I am on Garuda Server. Best of luck everyone. Edit: accidently made a blank edit. then fixed grammer on 2nd edit.

Okay, I bought a bone chip and traded it with the dancing old man. Now I have Wadi map. I walk to Wadi at lvl19 (no one in Valkrum to play with). I enter and the lovely music goes off. Now I'm alone in this godforsaken rock land with lizards and goblins and not one bloody rabbit in site. No one says anything about this part of the quest. Where are the stupid rabbits!?! Also, I'm thinking, if I ever do find a rabbit will it drop for me because I'm such a high level that every monster reads: "Not worthy of your time, master."

Although you've likely done this already, there are various areas that have the rabbits - try the 'square' rooms before you get to the geysers - I believe that's where they're at. Beware though unless you're several levels above the rabbits, as there are aggroing goblins around the same level as the rabbits - so unless they're too weak you may need to kill these too to get at the rabbits.

Once you have your license (which you can obtain after completing the quest at level 20), your character obtains forever the right to rent chocobos. No matter what job you're leveling, the chocobo license carries over. However, you can only rent chocobos from the cities if you're level 15 or higher in your current job, and you can only rent crag chocobos if you're level 20 or higher in your current job.

Ride Times:
Level 20+ - 30 minutes
Level 19 - 19 minutes
Level 18 - 18 minutes
Level 17 - 17 minutes
Level 16 - 16 minutes
Level 15 - 15 minutes
Level 1-14 - Cannot ride

The armor pieces that give Chocobo Riding Time bonuses add to the time you have remaining on your chocobo, but they don't give the effect if you're under level 20. Chocobo Boots/Rider's Boots and Chocobo Gloves/Rider's Gloves add 3 minutes. Chocobo Hose/Rider's Hose add 4 minutes, and Chocobo Jack Coat/Rider's Jack Coat add 5 minutes. So if you have either complete set, that's an extra 15 minutes of chocobo riding time in addition to the base 30 minutes.

The quest itself is relatively easy and DOES NOT REQUIRE you to feed the chocobo for six consecutive hours. You can feed him once per real month if you want to, and the quest will still be possible to complete.

The easiest way is to time it so your first feeding takes place around 23:30 gametime. Once it rolls over to the next game day, you can immediately do your second feeding. The game allows you to feed your chocobo once per game day, regardless of the amount of real time between feedings.

For the gausebit grass, you can either buy it from the auction house or farm it. The dragonflies in Meriphataud Mountains drop gausebit grass wiht a reasonably high drop rate, as do the Wadi Hares in Dangruf Wadi (if you're farming these, make sure you're fighting Wadi Hares, the other rabbits in the Wadi don't drop Gausebit Grass). If you're farming solo, you're safest to farm from Wadi Hares, as they can easily be soloed at level 20. They can be found most easily at G-7 of Dangruf Wadi, just watch for the goblins that lurk in that area as well.

Anyway, I hope that helps, good luck with your quest!
Tense Walk

I've been making the walk successfully since lvl20 from Sandy to Jeuno. It really helps to use sneak. Worst part is just before Upper Jeuno...watch out for the two gobs and the tigers. If you use sneak (and especially invis.) you should have no troubles.

I have attempted twice to feed sickly Choco and he is still scared of me. I have since logged out, but it sounds like I won't have any trouble completing the quest if I attempt to feed choc after every hour of play.

for a first timer, it's MUCH easier to take the Bastok route (meaning Highlands to Passhow to Rolanberry) even if you're from another city. Especially from Sandy. Batallia = ****.

Shutting up now...back to the chocobos..

I only bought four greens...do you need four or six? Because there are six days..

I have to disagree here, but there is a trick. As soon as you zone in from Jugner, hug the south wall, and basically walk down the wall the whole way. You will, at best, see a tiger or two far off to your left. I've run many characters at low levels this way, along the south wall, and never once died from it. Now, trying to cut through the Downs along the path? Yeah, that's death on a stick.

Yes, it is 6 consecutive hours. Plan an entire evening to this quest, as it will certainly take that long.

"You do not have to be logged in every hour to do this quest, they do not have to be consecutive hours either.
In other words you can not go up and continously try to feed all four grass to the chocobo."

did you even read the information? just wondering.

Not at all, you can take any time you want between two feedings... Do the first one, get a PT in Qufim, do whatever you want, and feed it again when you pass by ^^ Nothing, not even logging out, will disturb the quest.

And about the question somewhere before, what lvl you need: lvl 20 is the trigger lvl, you won't get it with a lower one.

What level can you be if you get the license and you change job?

Once you get your license and change jobs, that job has to be level 15 to rent a chocobo in town or level 20 to rent one by one of the crags.

Thank you kingofzeal. I've edited it to reflect the actual level requirements. Also, even though you can ride at lower levels, you don't stay on as long, maybe enough to cross 2 or 3 areas, depending on how far you have to go between zones.

you have that backwards:

you must be 15 to rent in a city, 20 at a crag.
