Summary

Help nurse the chocobo back to health. It seems to have suffered both mentally and physically. Gausebit wildgrass may do the trick.

Walkthrough

The first time you talk to Brutus, he will give you the quest "Chocobo on the Loose!" After watching the cutscene, talk to him again to get the quest "Chocobo's Wounds."

You absolutely MUST be at least level 20 to do this quest. Anyone who tells you otherwise is mistaken. Brutus will not give you the quest if your current job level is lower than 20.

After talking to Brutus (or before, whatever), you need to get four clumps of Gausebit Wildgrass. You will try and feed the sick chocobo the grass. You can get the grass by killing Wadi Hares in Dangruf Wadi, or Crane Flies in Meriphataud Mountains. You can also buy Gausebit Wildgrass off of the Auction House. It is listed under Weapons -> Ammo & Misc -> Pet Items. (Yes, Chocobo food is listed under the Weapons category. -_-)

Many players often get confused and think that you're supposed to feed the chocobo Gysahl Greens instead of Gausebit Wildgrass. This is wrong. Gysahl Greens will not work. You have to feed the chocobo Gausebit Wildgrass.

The quest can take up to six real world hours to complete. You must feed (or attempt to feed) one clump of Gausebit Wildgrass to the Chocobo every game day (one game day is equal to about one hour in real life). If you feed one clump at the end of a game day, you do not have to wait a full hour to feed the next clump. You only need to wait until the next game day. However, if you feed a clump at the beginning of a game day, then you WILL have to wait a full hour, since you will have to wait for the next game day before you can attempt to feed the Chocobo the next clump of grass.

In total, you must attempt to feed the Chocobo six times. However, you will only need four clumps of grass because the Chocobo will refuse your first two attempts.

Day 1 - The Chocobo rejects the food and refuses to eat.

Day 2 - The Chocobo rejects again (1 real hour later).

Day 3 - The Chocobo will accept this time (1 real hour later).

Day 4 - The Chocobo eats again (1 real hour later).

Day 5 - The Chocobo will eat again (1 real hour later).

Day 6 - The Chocobo will eat for the final time and you will get the license.

You do not have to be logged in every hour to do this quest, and they do not have to be consecutive hours, either. In other words, you can feed the chocobo once, then log off for several hours, then come back and feed the next clump of grass. Also, you cannot go up and continuously try to feed all four clumps of grass to the chocobo at once. You must wait at least one real-life hour (or until the next game day) between each feeding attempt.

I'm from Bastok, was lvl 20 just exploring la theine when a friend said, you're just a little ways away from Jeuno. so i said, that sounds like an adventure, what are the zones to go thru? Well a little while later, after going thru La Theine, Juggner, and Battalia, I made it to Upper Jeuno. Stayed on the paths, barely met anything that would aggro me. Saw one IT mob, the others I passed were easy up to tough. This didn't seem as scary as some are making it out to be, maybe I was lucky. Didn't dillydally, just kept right on going.

I had one grass that I bought on a whim at my Bastok mog house..without figuring out how to move my stuff to Jeuno, I checked Jeuno AH and there were some grass selling for a few hundred gil. Picked them up too. Guess I'll ride back to Bastok on a Choco!

i didnt bother to read through all the posts..

Chocobo's require level 20 base job to start the quest. once finished any sub being level 15+ can ride the chocobo. level 19 and under CAN'T start the quest. you need 4 Gaussebit Grasses. thats __Gaussebit__ to do this quest.. took me about 2 hours to find 4 in Wadi (but i had someone helping that also needed them) This is a pretty easy but very long way to go from bastok to jeuno. Bastok>S.Gusta>N.Gusta>Highlands>Dunes>La Theine Plateau>Jugner Forest>Batilla Downs>Upper Jeuno.
UGH!!

whover posted the message a, the chocobo license quest is still 20 but u can ride choocobos with classes at 15 in stead of 20, but u need to be 20 with a class first to get ur license

as for the easiest way to jeuno, go in this order from bastok.... bastok, s gustaberg, n gustaberg, konchcat highlands, valkum dunes, selbina , (ferry to mhuara), mhuara outside muhaura (cant think of name but its the only polace to go from mhuara), trongi canyon, m. mountains, s. champain, and to jeuno. this is the safest route, i ran there as a lvl 16 warrior dieing once because i didnt know that some mobs arrgoed. make sure u make ur HP. spend the 200g or so cause its worth the run u dont have to make.

omg are you crazy? sauro is a nightmare compared to rolanberry. and your way takes much too long, to boot. why go thru all those zones from the highlands and a boat ride when you could just run through two areas and be done with it?

ive made the run to jeuno a few times now (twice at lvl 17) and the easiest way ive found is thru the marshlands and rolanberry. in the marshes, you stay near the walls, in rolanberry you stay near the road. only divert when necessary. havent been attacked once following this route.

That has to be the longest way to get anywhere. Why not go up to san d'oria, do some quests and come back down through jeuno, visit windurst, get lost in elshimo and then go there. Sir you confuse me.

Okay... So my RDM is L21 and my support job is up to L12... I figure I'm ready for the Chocobo quest. I wasted 40 minutes trying to run there from Bastok and despite all efforts, I got attacked 3/4 of the way through the pashlow marshlands, and of course I died!

Does anyone know an easier way to go Bastok to Jueno?

Look, people, you shouldn't have any trouble getting to Jeuno from Bastok especially. Just AVOID EVERYTHING THAT MOVES. It's totally easy to do that in this game.

I walked from Windurst to Mhaura (thru Bubu), took the boat to Selbina, then walked to Bastok with no map of San D'Oria (thus, no map of the Valkrum Dunes) so I ended up in LaTheine and had to turn around and go back through the dunes....made it through the dunes to Bastok with only ONE encounter that I started myself....ALL WITHOUT DYING AND AT LEVEL 11. And I'm a monk. Then I made it all the way back again at level 13 without a single encounter or even getting chased.

So stop crying and just open your eyes and avoid mobs, people. Seriously. At level 20 the trip to Jeuno should be nothing.

Ok.. First of all, THEY WILL NOT GIVE YOU THE QUEST AT LV 15-19! I tried several times, talked to everybody, tried trading the grass, but nothing will happen. If you talk to Brutus he will say get away or something like that.
#Anonymous, Posted: Dec 19 2003 at 9:41 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Actually, they lowered the level for the quest to 15. At least that is what I read on the official Final Fantasy XI website.

here it is "The level restriction for riding chocobos in the three main nations has been decreased to 15.
In order to ride a chocobo at level 15, it is still necessary to acquire a chocobo license in the same way under the same conditions as before the update.
However, the amount of riding time for characters lower than level 20 will be shortened." and the link http://www.playonline.com/comnewsus/200312162201.html

I will also confirm this. I was under the impression you do quest at level 15, but I also am level 16, and apparently can not do this quest. What a wasted long walk. I guess I'll try for a teleport too......

Likewise, but I'm gonna stick it out a bit longer and try in the morning... maybe they mean to implement it once it hits the 16th on the west coast(?)

Either way, I walked this far... i might as well wait and try in the morning...

What would make more sense is that they reduced the level to ride a chocobo, not to get a license, so you could still jump on one when you're levelling up a sub.

Don't hold your breath.

nothing happens, u can do the quest on your time. but u have to wait at least 1 FF day.

Question: what kind of creature are dropping "lump of gysahl greens"? they are like 1000 gil on the AH. need 2 more to complete the chocobo quest.

Getting to Jeuno
# Dec 14 2003 at 2:28 PM Rating: Default
I didn't have any trouble getting from Windurst to Jeuno as a RDM21/WAR10. Sneak, deo, avoid the yagudos in Sauromugue - I wasn't attacked the whole time. (I did stop to solo an Air Elemental in Tahrongi though. Anything that drops wind clusters is worth stopping for. :)

So, if it's hard to take the direct route from Bastok or San D'Oria, maybe you should take the ship to Mhaura, then run across Buburimu, Tahrongi, Meriphataud (watch out for ghosts if you cross it at night) and Sauromugue.

As for getting gysahl greens - there's an NPC right next to the stables in Port Jeuno that sells them for 60 gil each. Kinda disappointing after the time I spent harvesting them in W Sarutabaruta.

I think the quest info should be clearer that you have to go to the chocobo stable in UPPER Jeuno, since there are 3 chocobo stables in Jeuno. I wondered why I couldn't find the right NPC...

Those gysahl greens from the NPC won't do the trick ... you need Gaussebit Grass not Gysahl Greens ... sadly.

You can get Gausebit Grass from Crane Flies in Meriphatud Mountains. I got 4 in under 10 mins (not a thief).

Mr. Anonyms has discovered my secret mission. I ran to Jeuno to make certain that the server maintenance performed on the 8th was just that, server maintenance. (<thinks to himself> yah that sounds good, use that excuse, no need for them to think I would just up and hike to Jeuno risking life and limb over something that has not been implemented yet.) Just as he / she mentioned some of the more interesting game modifications will happen on theā€¦ <looks at the post> 27th!
One thing to consider is the fame system, and how it will affect the chcocobo license quest. Will this level 15 thief be able to get the quest when nobody knows of me in Jeuno?
The Skinny of it
# Dec 11 2003 at 6:49 PM Rating: Decent
It would seem that the pervious poster made a valid point. I'm a freah lvl 15 thief, no subjobs of any kind, and I cannot get Brutus to give me the quest, and I'm sure it's because I'm not lvl 20. So yes, they did lower the lvl you needed to be to ride but you still have to be lvl 20 to get the quest. It's going to be a hard walk back to Bastok.
RE: The Skinny of it
# Jan 04 2004 at 12:43 PM Rating: Decent
Once again, this does not apply if you're under level 20. You have to be level 20 to get the license, but if you have a subjob at 15, then you can ride a chocobo.
RE: The Skinny of it
# Dec 12 2003 at 2:42 AM Rating: Decent
does not happen till the 16th of Dec.. on the 8th it was just server maintence.

While the poster did have a valid point. The level drop hasn't happened yet so your experiences with it only confirm the way it is currently.
Quest at 15?
# Dec 10 2003 at 3:03 PM Rating: Default
Does anyone know for a FACT whether this quest is dropping in level or just giving the ability to ride a Choco to those who did the quest over 20th and are coming back as lower lvl/subjobs?

Yes I know the patch is lowering the riding level to 15, but it does not say it is lowering the level where you can get a license, just the level you can ride. They are two different things.

OK, think I found a good way to get to Jeuno at lvl 20 that is safe on the EXP only. I started this in San so don't know bout the route from other towns... but I changed my job to a lvl 1 so I don't loose experience if I died. If your lvl 15 or 20 and trying to do this quest, if anything agro's on you, your gonna die anyways, might as well be a class you don't have exp in. It is possible to run through Bastillia and Jugnar without agro. Careful of tigers and gobs....I tried to stay away from everything in general to be sure.

some of the questions that haven't been answered leave me curious. For those who have the liscense maybe you can clear things up.
1.) Can you rent a chocobo without doin the quest?
2.) How long do rentals last?
(Then a few questions I was wondering about)
If you have the liscense do you have to go to the stables to pick up a chocobo everytime? Do you have to pay for a chocobo everytime? or how does that work?
RE: Chocobo specifics
# Dec 21 2003 at 7:10 PM Rating: Default
understand this.... you have to be lvl 20 to get the quest regardless of the patch... the patch only lowers the riding limit, that means you can ride at 15 but only if you have a lvl 20+ job and have finished the quest...

I think people need to understand you can't even look at the quest until 20. Well until the 18th it is that way, I believe on the 18 they are planning on droping it to 15. Which is kind of good. Doesn't really matter to me.

It is kind of like the Sub Job quest you can't do anything with it until you reach 18. I mean you can give the guy the items before you reach 18 but he won't take them.

Ok, if you want to get really technical, you should have said, "There are a lot of illiterate people...."

It's just as annoying for ppl to take up space pointing out that people are asking stupid and repetitive questions that could be answered if they just read the damn posts.
