Summary

Solve the riddle of the task book.

Walkthrough

To become a Paladin, you must complete three quests for Balasiel. You can start by getting the quests from Balasiel around level 10, but you can only change your character's job to Paladin after the third quest has been completed. Balasiel won't give you that one unless you are at least level 30, like all other Advanced Job quests.

The final task involves solving several riddles from ancient books of knightly learning. Balasiel first reads from the Book of Tasks; the meaning behind the passage is for you to ask the guards on the second floor of the guardpost in Victory Square for more information. When you speak with the first guard, Cahaurme (Southern San d'Oria, J-9), you receive the Book of the East and the second guard, Baunise (Southern San d'Oria, H-9), gives you the Book of the West. Additional sources tell you that you must retrieve something from Davoi and give it to Balasiel.

In area (E-10) of Davoi, there is a Disused Well. Be sure to have a form of Sneak and Invisible as the pugils aggro sound the orc aggro by sight. There will be a Davoi Mush near the well, but if you keep Sneak on, he won't be able to see you. Check the well to obtain a Knight's Soul. When you return to Balasiel with the item, he gives you a key item: Kite Shield and you are knighted. You can now become a Paladin.

After a bit of worrying I did this (the last part) all solo. The thing was it seemed like even high-levels could easily get killed here, so it felt a little bit awkward to ask for help. And if I messed things up alone I only had myself to blame. Some guy that had helped me get the ice-weather for Summoner offered to help earlier but I always prefer to at least try these things alone first, if it is do-able. If nothing else the experience might help being better at getting help (he, he, how's that sentence).

I went in as a MNK 31 so I didn't have to worry to much about the first bunch of orcs, well they probably would have aggroed anyway but I would have time to zone if things got too bad (did the Davoi-report-mission at the same time).

Once off the bridge it was easy to look out for orcs up above and concentrate on the fishes. I did run too far south though, missed a turn, and at one point my oil wore off and a fish started biting my behind. But I stayed calm and turned around and killed it with maybe a little luck. And there was only one at that point (at most places there is two or three together) but after killing that one I was not so afraid of aggro from them anymore: with hundred fists I would probably make it even against three.

Once I got to the well I had both oil and powder on and I didn't remember how to turn invisible off (what keys to press (even though I did that uncountable times during the Halloween-event, same keys as to turn off a costume)). So I was going to let it wear off by itself and then grab the soul, but then I put on another oil and of course that turned the invisibility off too and at the same time it kept the blobby-thingie calm.

I started going back (was even thinking of letting the Mush or whatever give me a ride home) and had run quite far before I remebered I actually had brought one of those warp-staffs we got during Halloween...

I might come back to Davoi soon anyway, I hear there is some sandals hidden in an urn...

Whoever wrote this up was either 1. on dope or 2. on crack or 3. on both. The instructions on how to get to the well suck @$$... If you want a map on where to go, click here

http://www.ffxi-atlas.com/nav/?act=show&id=davoi

You enter the river at J-10 and you want to keep on continuing as far West as you can go. You'll exit from the river at D-8. Then go South until you're at a dead end at E-10.

PLD quest

I completed this yesterday with my friend. we were 31 RDM/15 WAR and 30 DRK/ 15 WAR. In the second part you need to take off your gloves and wash your hands to be able to pick up the stalegmite. You DO NOT need the spatha.

The only hard part was the last part in Davoi. That took about 2 hours to do. My magic isnt that good and we had some help from a 31 BLM, but I couldnt cope with 3 people constantly casting invis/sneak. But we did do it, and is recommended to anyone who really wants an adventure at low levels.

Part two
# Feb 10 2006 at 12:53 AM Rating: Decent
On part two, if Morjean wont talk to you (he doesn't like me...) All you have to do is click the ??? in the pool of water, then click the ??? towards the center of the room to get the dew (other wise it just slips through your fingers).

I'm guess that's all he would tell you anyways, so hope this saves someone some trouble. (It took me 30m and a useless GM call to report a bug before I figured it out)
RE: Part two
# Feb 14 2006 at 12:23 PM Rating: Default
Also, you must equip the Spatha you obtained in Part One in your weapon slot, prior to clicking on both of the "???," or dew will slip through your fingers.

Don't make the mistake that I did and decide to sell the Spatha when running by AH, lol.

Not true, i did part one when i was lvl 10 warrior w/o a sub job, i sold the spatha because i needed gil.
This was in November 2004

I did part 2 actually trying to unlock PLD in july 05 as a 37 THF.

Spatha from part one is not needed.

I just finished this quest, solo, as a lvl 30 whm. With sneak and invis it was pretty easy. i had no close encounters, or even aggroes for that matter, so to anyone who is going to do this quest, just bring a whm or have some silent oils and prism powders.
dang i was wrong

LMAO.... as a 56 mnk i though i can solo this quest all the way. DANG .. I WAS WRONG... the quest is pretty easy till teh davoi trip part. i got to davoi and pretty much everything check not worth it till i get to close to the WELL. anyhow, i check 1 orc and it was easy prey low evasion low defense so i tested out the aggro lvl by going next to the orc... lol no aggo so i though kool. i keep running to the other room till i see gladiator like the 1 from the other room. i checked ep-- so i payed no attention and next thing you know my hp on yellow i though i close so i just keep running towards the well. the ep link was ok till i ran into the tough mob near the point...eell do i need to say more. DEATH... CAN I HATE IT...lol i was so close too.

still not finish yet. just did it last night so if you willing to help. /tell akakami please.

You could always go to the AH these things are dirt cheap. I get them very commonly off undead ghost type mobs (ghosts/bogies ect) I am not sure why the guide recommends a NM for the drop but if you are camping spook for a tree root you have too much free time on your hands. "When all else fails check the alchemy materials" response giving when looking for variuos items. Hope this helps.

The biggest help by far is a map ! its only 3k and it will save you a LOT of time ... i wasted a lot of time trying to find it without a map .. got one then it took me 3minutes to get to the well .....

as you enter Davoi go straight on and head for the point where the land meets the river (beige to green) stay in the river until you ge to the far left of the map .. the river will once again join the land .. go onto the land head south the well is at E-10

as long as you have the map you will find it in no time at all
Simplest way to do it solo. (with what you need)
# May 23 2005 at 12:19 PM Rating: Decent
I got flagged last night. This is how to do it like I did it.

First, make sure you have the Map of Davoi. It seems like a substantial investment, but if you make one wrong turn, this will turn out to be a lifesaver.

Go talk to a gate guard and purchase a Scroll of instant warp. Set your HP to South San D'Oria.

Next, go to the AH and purchase 5 prism powders and 5 vats of Silent Oil. You won't need any more than this to get there. If you buy a stack, you're wasting your money, unless you have a friend doing this one with you and you give him half.

Grab a choco and run to Davoi. When you enter, you'll see the NPC that you had talked to for an earlier mission. TALK TO HIM AGAIN. If he says something like "you have no further business with me, do you?", you're good to go. If he says more than that, you've got the wrong Davoi mission.

After talking to the NPC, run down the path until you can just start to see orcs. Don't get close enough to get aggro. Use your silent oil, then your prism powder in that order. If you don't, the silent oil will cancel out the prism powder and you'll feel pretty dumb.

Take a right out of the entrance path and head to the opening slightly to the left of where you're running. You should see a broken bridge. Drop down into the water, and head to the left. Make any turn that will allow you to stay in the river. This will result in you being in a long straight path in the water. There are good spots to stop and recast sneak and invis. Make good use of these.

Keep running along the straightaway until you have another opportunity to make a right to stay in the water. This time, take a left out of the water. Run into the opening, and veer slightly to the left toward a passageway. Run down it until you see a well. Run to the back of the well, and wait for the slime to move to the front. Cancel Invis, target the well, and click on it. Use the Instant Warp scroll to get back to San D'Oria quick, or attack the slime to bloodport fast. Then go talk to Balasiel. Done deal!
Yup

This quest is actually pretty easy, but unfortunately I made it a lot harder than it needed to be. I went to the well and forgot to get to the books of the east/west first.

So I ended up wasting more powders, pots, and time than I needed. Plus, I bloodported twice instead of once. Ah well.

If you know how to get there though, it's pretty easy. I followed rivenward's directions a page back, and they worked great.

A simplified version of the directions is this. See the river on your map. Get in the river. Go all the way west. Then go south and east a little bit to the couldesac area where the well is.

But it was very easy to get to the well both times I went, and I never even came close to getting aggro. Went as a naked level 17 BLM, because I didn't care much about losing experience with that job.

Just make SURE you remember to get the books first. Don't make the same silly mistake I did.

Also, I was disappointed that there was no cut scene to finish out the quest, like there are with most of the advanced job quests.

I did this quest as THF30/WAR15 with the help of a friendwho was WHM29/BLM14. He kept Inivsi up until we got to the river then just kept sneak up. We had a couple of close calls in the river where sneak was wearing out in the middle of a group of Pugils, but we made it nonetheless. Also, our moronic selves forgot to get Instant-Warps so we had to walk out. Walking out was a bit harder than walking to the well, but we accomplished it. With Oils and Powders which are more reliable you can easily do this quest by yourself at level 30.

to find the well in davoi seems to be the hardest part for someone whos never been there.
ill try to explain how to get there and what to use.

when you zone into davoi youll follow the path till you come to the first open area with orcs. Orcs detect you by sight so prisim powders will let you run past all orcs.

once you come to this open area, take a left and run along the left wall staying in this area.

Take the second path on the left and youll run into another open area with some more orcs and lizzards. Keep invis up at all times through here.

a side note... if you apply a prisim powder, it will automaticaly cancel your old powder. that means if your invis is wearing, use another and it will refresh. you CAN NOT DO THIS WITH SILENT OILS.

now you should be looking at the second open area waiting for instructions, take a right and run along the right wall. Take the first path to the right that you see.

this path leads to a river, and has higher lvl orcs on it. this path going to the river has a path leading off to deeper davoi on the right side of it, so stick to the left side of this path till you see the river.

At this point you shouldnt see anymore orcs, but youll see pugils, and they aggro to sound. silent oils will see you through past the pugils.

When you get to the river, youll take a right and walk down the river, keeping sneak up at all times. This river will have a fork in it after some ways down it. Youll need to go left.

Im not quite sure if the path you want is first or second, but i do know its the last path on the left. My suggestion is follow this fork of the river till it dead ends, turn around and go back and take the first right.

when you take the path, youll enter a large open area with lots of orcs. Youll need invisible again, and sneak is no longer needed.

Take a left when you enter this open area and hug left wall of this area. Youll take the second path on the left and this path leads to the well you seek.

This well is guarded by a slime oil type mob and they aggro by sound so use silent oils.

i reall hope i got all directions correct. if im wrong anywhere, post and ill change.

my estimate of how many oils and powders to have to GET TO THE WELL ONLY is 5 prisim powders, and 4 silent oils.

if you didnt brig an instant warp scroll, youll need double of those number to be safe.

i hope you find this useful and good luck on pld quest.

Day out

Davoi: With it's lush greenery, picturesque rivers and streams, that slight scent of death. It's no wonder this place is top holiday spot for familys of vana d'iel this year. That's until you meet the not so friendly locals, orcish impalers, beastriders, and the sort. It's a walk in the park till you de-level...TWICE.-scowls- note to self: By all ways possible, boycot Davoi for the rest of your life. I'm sure there are worse places, but momentarilly I'm still miffed about the whole check system there. Not so easy when you, and your Drg partner both de-level then your high lvl Blm cops it too all in one night, hehe all in all, twas an experience. XD

Yeah BLM can't solo anything very well, I should know, I love that job. I've taken on toughs with my RDM at lvl 35, but BLM just can't handle soloing. Unless you want to sleep it, heal, sleep it, heal, sleep it, nuke, sleep it, heal, repeat, you can't solo.
Not too bad with some prepatation.
# Mar 20 2005 at 1:15 AM Rating: Decent
Did this quest about an hour ago, wasn't too bad. Be careful of the Orcish Nightraiders, Impalers, and Farkillers that you encounter on the way though. Be sure to bring prism powder and silent oil, you will probably need both to get to the well alive. If you are on level 30 like my warrior was I would recommend 3 silent oils and 4 prism powders. Also, get a scroll of instant warp, so as to get back to Sandy very quickly.

If everything goes smoothly, you can do the quest in less than an hour.
Orcs
# Mar 15 2005 at 8:54 PM Rating: Decent
There are no orcs on the waterway, and I don't think they can see you from the ledge. A friend of mine told me at Level 31 he got through with only Sneak. If they don't have line of sight they can't aggro you, meaning you only have to worry about the sound aggro.

Or have they put more mobs in now? (I'm about to do this one myself.)
RE: Orcs
# Mar 27 2005 at 9:06 PM Rating: Default
Wrong. Orcish Farkillers can see up and down while the other types cannot. I know this from many experiences; not only this quest but from Windurst missions. Therefore, your friend was only lucky that a Farkiller did not see him and shoot him full of arrows.
