Summary

Solve the riddle of the task book.

Walkthrough

To become a Paladin, you must complete three quests for Balasiel. You can start by getting the quests from Balasiel around level 10, but you can only change your character's job to Paladin after the third quest has been completed. Balasiel won't give you that one unless you are at least level 30, like all other Advanced Job quests.

The final task involves solving several riddles from ancient books of knightly learning. Balasiel first reads from the Book of Tasks; the meaning behind the passage is for you to ask the guards on the second floor of the guardpost in Victory Square for more information. When you speak with the first guard, Cahaurme (Southern San d'Oria, J-9), you receive the Book of the East and the second guard, Baunise (Southern San d'Oria, H-9), gives you the Book of the West. Additional sources tell you that you must retrieve something from Davoi and give it to Balasiel.

In area (E-10) of Davoi, there is a Disused Well. Be sure to have a form of Sneak and Invisible as the pugils aggro sound the orc aggro by sight. There will be a Davoi Mush near the well, but if you keep Sneak on, he won't be able to see you. Check the well to obtain a Knight's Soul. When you return to Balasiel with the item, he gives you a key item: Kite Shield and you are knighted. You can now become a Paladin.

3 powders and 2 oils and I got there without a problem.

The slime was there when I got to the well, but did not aggro me when I inspected the well and when I used a scroll of instant warp to get out.
If you're a whm, solo it

I found part 2 harder than part three. There's lots of good advice her for part two, part three just cross the broken bridge and as has been said, and run west all along the river, then at the end of the map you turn south down to the well. Sneak and Invis make soloing this quest easy for a lvl 30 whm.

The black squishy thing at the well didn't aggro me, before or after i obtained the Knight's Soul.. I don't know why, but I was glad :) I even managed to sneak/invis back out on foot. I don't think you can get out the way you came, broken bridge goes only one way but you can get out easily if run east past it, i believe, and up.

Thank you to whom ever posted this Map of Davoi with the directions to the well on it, picture's worth a thousand words.

I'd never been to davoi before. You just go in from the junger forest (off the La Theine) and you'll be coming into Junger northbound, you follow up the path, taking an off-path right and then back down south, kind of an upside down U... you'll see the entrance to Davoi on the map as the only southbound exit that isn't marked as anything (G-12)... that's davoi if you're looking for it... I can't ever find, or remember, where anything is. Here's the Junger map...

Can a Lv48 THF go through Davoi without catching any aggro or will I need Tonko and a few Silent Oils?

It can be done at level one if you wanted to try. But, yeah...you will make it. Just be careful with the sound aggro on pugs and sight on orcs. Getting sneak is allways harder than invisible becuase you have to cancel it but you will also have to get Tonko up quickly after for this place.
to make it easier

theres a simple trick to this task, use a lv1 job.. any will suffice. simply bring 3-4 oils, and powders, orcs are sight and pugils and slime are sounds. dont wear any equipment; as equipment causes noise, noise = less silence... (It is proven that not wearing armor will help silent oils last longer, unknown for sneak.) you can't use sneak or invis on a lv1 job... but you can use the items without handicap... once your done go a head and kamikaze it ^^ don't risk your lv30 xp for no reason >.>

I did this last night with a three people. there was 33 drg/war (me) , 30 war/idk and a 30 whm/smn. We were invisible til we hit the river and then we just fought the pugs and ran like hell cause sneak and invisible were being extremely annoying. we didn't get orc agro once and the pugs were all easy stuff. got agrod by the mush at the well but killed it using two hours.
YES WAS EASY

I did this mission last night. 30War/14monk Solo. I could not believe how easy it was once I did it.
I followed the path that Rivenward posted below (thanks) Before I dropped in to the river I used 2 Oiles and then 1 Powder. Reapplied both about 3/4 of the way down river. Got to well turned off invisibale and touched the well. And I dident even aggro th mush by the well. Used warp to get back, and now I am a PLD. YEA
this was easy

Yeah i soloed this as 30war/14mnk....

took me about 30 minutes once i decided to head to Davoi. All you need to solo this quest is enough gil to bu 3-4 prism powder and silent oil.
The first prism powder i had wore off right away, and the second one ran off as i reached the area on the SW corner of the map. I didnt see any mobs by the well, and i just used my warp scroll after getting the soul. very easy, dont be scared to try it by yourself.

this quest is easy with sneak/invis - as for the waterfalls in the caves, from the entrance enter the firt room and head right. follow this until you can make another right and just keep going. select the ??? in the water then look around the room (quickly) for the other ???. once done, warp, rinse and hang to dry =)

oh i wanted to add that my directions assume you entered the caves from the bottom of the valley near F-6. apparently there is more than one entrance.

Just a note. After you click on the ??? in the pool on G-7 in the Ordelle's Caves, go into the middle of the room, and click on that ???. Do it fast enough, and you get your key item. Took me several minutes to figure out.

You might be able to do the quest as a level 1, but I don't think you would survive long enough to get to davoi

If you die during this quest and delevel to 29 - but you already initiated everything except the getting TO the well part, can you finish the Paladin quest?

My friend who was helping me sort of got aggro'd by those orc rangers, and I had half the zone following me when I ran for my life.

Yes, you can still complete the quest if you delevel as long as it was already started. I died on my first attempt and then completed it while still level 29 with no problems.
Good Luck! Playing as a Paladin is great fun and usually easy to get a party.

Did this quest with my RDM30 (had I known that I would keep PLD all the way thru 56, I would have leveled my WAR initially instead of RDM.. but would lack the benefit of casting sneak/invis).

Keeping sneak and invisible casted on me at all times, I did the following for the Davoi part:

I ran to the broken bridge at (I-8) from the entrance area (J-7), dropped down and headed left. Turned right at (I-9) and headed west. Made a left at the intersection of (H-8), went west to (D-8), made another left at this intersection and went southeast to the Disused Well at (E-10).

Turned off invisible and touched the Disused Well for my Knight's Soul. Then turned off sneak to aggro the ooze and ghetto warped back to Sandy. I deleveled in the process, but as long as you get the quest at level 30, you can still get PLD if you delevel.

Was helping a friend do this (I was 50) and he caught agro from the high teer orcs and they ripped us a new one. So I would say yes, you may gain agro, although if you're careful and make sure that their backs are turned when you're in the water-ways, you should be fine.

After finishing the quest myself, I was helping a 31 MNK friend get his flag, casting sneak and invis on him. However, he didn't inform me his sneak was wearing off, and drew aggro from a pugil, which we took out, then a second pugil aggroed before I could recast sneak. Right after we barely killed the second pugil, a train of 3-4 orcs came charging down the river and hit each of us for over 200 damage. Off the top of my head, I don't remember which orcs they were, but I do remember reading that the two using ranged attacks were around lvl 50-55, and the two melees were over 60.

You could go through without drawing aggro from the pugils while in the river, but I'd bring a prism powder or two, just in case. While the orcs on the way to the well you need normally shouldn't see you, bad things can always happen, like they did to me. The price of the powders would definitely be less costly than losing ~1500 exp if you got spotted by a similar train.
Wow... easy...

I'm a Dragoon/Warrior lvl 40/20, I just got the Knight's soul. The quest was rather simple; I took the water route, only had to use 1 each of prism powder and silent oil, when I left the river and headed to the well. Got the soul, and I'm fighting the mush as I right... meh... it killed me... stupid jelly...
Ghetto warp back to sandy and become a paladin :)

Any way, thanks for the help every one that's posted on this... 4 more jobs to get

I just did this yesterday solo. I have whm to 31 so I just cast sneak / Invis on myself. I tried going an overland route to avoid the river so I only had to worry about invis. But it's not possible due to two gates in the way. You might be able to open them, but well then you would have to take invis down and get killed by orcs. So you actually have to take the river. I also thought it was on the other side at first (not in the dead end take the river route) and was killed twice trying the wrong way. Once I was disconed and when I spawned back in was dead before the black loading screen was gone. The 2nd time I found out the Geezards agro to sound. After that and realizing I needed to take the water route it was no prob. With sneak and invis one of the easiest quests.

::EDIT:: The Davoi Mush apparently agros to sound as I stood around the well with invis down after I got the soul waiting to bloodport back and had to cast banish on it to get agro. It took well over 45 seconds for it to kill me as a 31 whm with no gear on (didn't want to get it from my other char) and no buffs. Even though it wave VT or higher I think it's kinda wussy.

PLD Quest
# Aug 10 2004 at 2:49 AM Rating: Decent
I just got this done today with the help of a 55RDM, named Cailleach on Bahamut. Davoi is an insane psycho-orc infested area, and I just wanted to give props to this RDM who helped me, casting sneak and invis when it mattered, and killing the Davoi Mush that aggroed at the well. much thanks from a new Paladin.
Where are the guards?
# Aug 08 2004 at 4:19 PM Rating: Decent
do you have to talk to the guards about book of the east&west or can you just go to davoi? im Bastokan, never been to Davoi, so i ont know if you can choco there or not. help me out!
RE: Where are the guards?
# Aug 09 2004 at 1:44 PM Rating: Excellent
To complete the quest, you have to get the maps from the gaurds on the towers. I tried it without it, and I failed miserably. So, get all three items, then you CAN take a choco there, but NOT INSIDE. It was easy for me, well because im a lvl 48 DRG and just got my friend, a 58 PLD to direct me around. We even faught the slime just for fun. Quest Completed, and in quite a nice fashion.......less then an hour for all 3 quests.
RE: Where are the guards?
# Aug 09 2004 at 10:00 AM Rating: Decent
I don't know if you HAVE to talk with the guards but they are posted on top of the wall in Southern San d'Oria. The entrances for each are a little further from the center than the East and West gates.

As far as taking a chocobo, you can choco to the entrance, but not into Davoi since it is considered a dungeon and not open terrain.

Take high-level help, too.
