Summary

Solve the riddle of the task book.

Walkthrough

To become a Paladin, you must complete three quests for Balasiel. You can start by getting the quests from Balasiel around level 10, but you can only change your character's job to Paladin after the third quest has been completed. Balasiel won't give you that one unless you are at least level 30, like all other Advanced Job quests.

The final task involves solving several riddles from ancient books of knightly learning. Balasiel first reads from the Book of Tasks; the meaning behind the passage is for you to ask the guards on the second floor of the guardpost in Victory Square for more information. When you speak with the first guard, Cahaurme (Southern San d'Oria, J-9), you receive the Book of the East and the second guard, Baunise (Southern San d'Oria, H-9), gives you the Book of the West. Additional sources tell you that you must retrieve something from Davoi and give it to Balasiel.

In area (E-10) of Davoi, there is a Disused Well. Be sure to have a form of Sneak and Invisible as the pugils aggro sound the orc aggro by sight. There will be a Davoi Mush near the well, but if you keep Sneak on, he won't be able to see you. Check the well to obtain a Knight's Soul. When you return to Balasiel with the item, he gives you a key item: Kite Shield and you are knighted. You can now become a Paladin.

I just did this quest today, and I have to say it was extremely easy. Using this site, and other's posts here, I had the perfect game plan for getting through to the well.

Only problem was....I put on the prism powder at the beginning of davoi(good thing i did)BUT, i forgot to apply silent oil.

I entered the river from the broken bridge and proceeded down the river to the well.

While I was omw to the well, I passed a few Davoi Pugils, and having forgot to apply silent oil, I got aggro.

Now, these conned as decent challenge at 30, so i figured "Ok, I'll just boot it to the well get the soul and bloodport."

By the time i get to the well, I've amassed a train of 13 pugils, and 6 orcs.

I cam into range of the well with 12 hp left thinking to myself "Don't die! Don't die!!"

I got to the well, examined it, and got the Knight's Soul for the quest not even 2 seconds before I died. I was so happy i managed to get it!

After that i just went back to home point, went to Balasiel and gained my Paladin status.

Now it's time to get brd, nin, bst, sam, and drg. I also got rng today.

I see everyone talking about a Broken Bridge and whatnot, and I look at the map, and get confused as to why you can't:

- go directly South when you enter Davoi
- make your way down to J-10
- cross through that bridge I guess
- keep walking west
- walk north for a short bit at F-10
- go west again at F-9
- go south at E-9 and hit the well at E-10

If you look at a map, this one will help:
http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/areas.html?farea=34
You'll understand my directions.

So if anyone can answer why you can't go that way, or why it's never been said, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks. ^_^

Please don't be all; "Blah blah blah, you stupid n00b" etc. etc. I'm mearly just wondering as to why that path cannot be taken.

Edit: Yeah, I did the Moogle Summerfest Quest with a Mithra, we ended up in Davoi (yay! ^_^), payed her 1k to wait 5 minutes as I got the Knights Soul, whee! I'm a Paladin. ^_^

One question: Why would you want to waste all your time (and sneak and invis) going all the way down to J-10?

The broken bridge is at I-8 where the bend in the river around H-8 is, simply go in there and follow the river Westward.
just did this last night, er, this morning....

we had a pt of 4 lvl 30s, DRK (me) 2 WARs, and a RDM

luckilly I had a map :)

Basically, enter Davoi, and head right (west) and slightly south. (I-8) is the location of the broken bridge you drop off of.

In the beginning everything conned as easy prey, and we had no problem getting to the broken bridge, then sneaked the party, and headed West along the river, had to cast sneak once more on the way.

At D-8, you'll hit land again. (there are Lizards here, so you might need sneak still) Cast Invis, and go South, then Southeast once you hit the clearing. The western part of E-10 is where you want to go.

Blubbery Bulge was waiting for us when we got there, but no worries, since it agros sound, we just cast sneak again, and went to the well with no problems.

However, getting out wasn't so easy. Since we dropped off the bridge, I wasn't sure how to get out. I wasn't willing to waste 750 CP on a scroll of warp, I'd rather take the 400XP loss (with moghancement: XP) You DID leave Kazham with plenty of buffer XP, right?

We got to H-8, stopped on land to check the map, and were agro'd by a Geezard (Liz) which was IT to us. Probably could have had it beat, but a 2nd one joined in (which I slept) and then a 3rd one. I never knew Lizards aggro'd, oh well.

So if you're doing the quest in Davoi, and think you can rest because there are only Lizards around, think again :)

If I was soloing this, I'm guessing I could've done it with 3 or 4 silent oils and 2 or 3 Prism Powders, if I didn't care about the trip back.

I see a lot of people posting about waiting for sneak and invisible to wear off. Remember, if you highlight the indicators for sneak and invis at the top of the screen and click them, they will drop right away. That way you don't have to worry about them dropping at an inopportune time.
SummerFest makes this a snap

Thanks to Summerfest, I found that in Windurst, an elvaan and a mithra go to Davoi, thanks to my LS member Eskedre. It differs between countries, I'm sure. Anyways, it made getting PLD a piece of cake and my taru buddy was more than accomodating while I bungled around to find the bloody well.

P.S. The Mush there does not seem to aggro (as my heart went a mile a minute while I grabbed the Knight's Soul) but I still highly recommend caution. ^^; Maybe I was just lucky.

A friend of mine has been asking me to help him with the paladin extra job quest for weeks now.

Once we figured out the nature of the Summerfest quests we realized that getting to the Magical Well in Davoi would be a piece of cake.

We partied up and talked to the moogle and, conveniently enough, went straight to Davoi!

With the never-ending Sneak and Invisible the moogles provide he was able to walk straight to the well with out any aggro. He got the Knight's Soul with no trouble and was even able to complete the moogle quest afterwards ^_^

This technique requires a great deal of luck to actually get to Davoi, but once you're there it's a snap.

Edit: It seems that a Male Hume/Mithra party will get to Davoi everytime. This has worked for me three times now.

My apologies to all those reading this after Aug. 8, 2004

Sadly, I (a Mithra) and a Hume male just did the Summerfest event and went to Rancor's Den. It was my first time doing the event (because I really don't care about it). so that might have something to do with it. But I did want to finish the PLD quest :(

I'm a male hume as well and when I did the summerfest quest with a mithra I went to the Rancor den too. I would think that where you go changes with each game day.

What I did was searched through all the WHM and find one 60+. Ask if they could help me through Davoi. Well it was a very lucky day for me. I got a level 74 WHM to go with me. Most people never think of "searching" for help. There are some very kind people playing this game. -Ifrit

Paladin Quest
# Jul 15 2004 at 10:35 AM Rating: Decent
What fun. I tried to take a group of uber LS members: rdm, whm, pld, drk, brd.....they were all lvl 50+. The whm and rdm died, and so did I since i lost invis/sneak ability. Twice we died....lack of communication hurts alot. I had a map, but how to get there? I ended up doing it solo: I spent almost 10k on a stack of prizm powder and silient oil. Enter Davoi. Go straight then right till you hit the broken bridge. Drop down and go left, and take your next available RIGHT turn. You'll go down a straight path for a couple sections, when u see a path to the left go there. Prob need to stop and recast prizm/silent oil. Go down the path and turn left and then right towards the path at the southeast of the area. This leads down a path which has the Disused Well at the end. BTW: THERE IS A NM BLUBERRY (spelling) here. When u touch the ???? you become visible, and will die horribly. Luckily, some LS members were there to take it out. Get an Instant Warp with your Conquest Points from a gate guard in your town before you head to Davoi. After you get the Knights Soul, use it to warp to your HP in town (you did set in Sandy right?!) Alas, take it to Balasiel, and you are now able to use the paladin job. You can use a whm or rdm instead of spending the money, but I suggest a pt of no more than 2, or 3 tops. I was restless and wanted it badly, so I spent the gil. You do have to be lvl 30 to start this, but if you lose a level in the process like I did, you can still complete the quest. GL

Well I just wanted to comment on this.. cuz i was once blamed for someone's death cuz I was not readily avaible for them to assist with this quest.. People like me that like to help people with such quests also like to play the game too.. If we were too busy to help.. well work around our schedules.. I've never turned down helping.. I will give my schedule and if they can't wait i'll try my best to give directions... so if you died its not because of the help not received.. maybe its your judgement call that went wrong when you died that day.. like i said in all of my posts in this forum.. stop at times when there are no pugs or orcs around.. remove buff and recast again.. its purely a judgement call on your part.. so far again.. i've helped 3 other people and they didn't die at all... this quest is not hard.. you need not have a full party to do this.. well of course you need a whm or rdm to cast spells.. or just buy potions and powders yourself.. First of all, DO NOT DO THIS QUEST WITH A RDM!!!!!! Secondly, if you choose to go without a rdm, and are lvl 35 and below then carry the sneak and invis potions. The orcs will aggro you and kill you. I had a lvl buffer and still delvled. I died 3 times before I finally gave up. So of course, more xping for me, but if you choose to go without help, good luck, it's not that easy.

My, my, I feel the anger towards the RDM that helped you. I'm sorry to say and hope other readers don't follow all of your advice. Do bring some scent oils and prizm powders if you want for backup but with a good RDM or WHM you won't need them at all. (Oh don't forget your "Scroll of Instant Warp"!)

There's no difference as far as taking a WHM with you on this quest or taking a RDM. Both have the same level of sneak and invisible. I can say with confidence that I've helped a few people without incident of aggro and specially death! (Level 31 RDM by the way). Maybe your RDM guide didn't know what he was doing or certain things weren't made clear from the get go.

What I'm trying to say is.. Before entering Davoi, I told the person I was helping to follow my instructions to the detail so nothing would go wrong:

My instructions were for him to make a temporary macros to warn me that his/her "Sneak" or "Invisible" is about to wear off.

/p <call4> My Sneak is about to wear off!!!
/p <call5> My Invis is about to wear off!!!

So when I get those warnings. I would know when to stop and recast. (Seperate macros for each of course) It is purely simple.

Being that I'm the guide he or she will just have to target me and follow. Also I've heard but cannot confirm if it is true or not. That if you use the /autofollow feature that "Sneak" and "Invisible" wear off faster.

Also the RDM should gauge when to stop in case and recast again. For example when at a portion of the river where there are no danger from pugil aggro. I would stop and have him remove the both buffs and I'll recast again. Then once we hit the "disused well" I'll have him remove the "Invisible" and "Sneak" buff and recast "Sneak" again and have him/her click on the well to get the item. Then warp out of Davoi to Sandy to complete the quest.

These are 3 sepperate quests:

A Squire's Test:
You can buy the revival tree root for under 1k on basicly all servers.

A Squire's Test II:
Southern San d'Oria
1) Speak with Balasiel. (Second floor ledge in F-7 across a wooden bridge)
2) Speak to Chanpau. (courtyard in L-7 below Balasiel)
Northern San d'Oria
3) Speak to Morjean. (Cathedral L-7 first room on the left)
La Theine Plateau
4) Go to the ravine at H-7 and take the ramp down into the ravine. The entrance to Ordelle's Caves is in the western most tip.
Ordelle's Caves
Sneak will be needed in the waterfall room if you are around lvl 30.
5) You begin at K-3, from there go South West, through a 4-way intersection, the next room to open up in the path is the waterfall room. The waterfall is on your imediate left once in the room.
6) Interact with the ??? in the pool of water at the base of the waterfall, wetting your hands.
7) Quickly go to the middle of the room and interact with the ??? there to get the Stalactite Dew. (If the dew slips through your hands repeats steps 6 and 7)
8) Warp, backtrack to La Theine Plateau and go to the crag and get a chocobo, or run back to San d'Oria to speak with Balasiel again.

A Knight's Test:
Southern San d'Oria
1) Speak with Balasiel. (Gives you Book of Tasks)
2) Speak with Cahaurme. (Gives you Book of the East)
Go to L-8 take the stairs, inside a doorway in the outter wall (South East corner of L-8), up to the second floor and across a short walkway to find Cahaurme.
3) Speak with Baunise. (Gives you Book of the West)
In a similar gaurd post as Cahaurme in F-8 sector.
4) Now go through West Ronfaure to La Theine Plateau to Jugner Forest.
Jugner Forest
5) Hug around the wall of the zone to your right till you reach the southern most tip of G-12, this is the entrance to Davoi.
Davoi
Sneak and invsi or silent oils and prism powders are a must.
6) Go to I-8 and drop down into the river bed. Go South to I-9 and turn West to follow the river all the way to D-8. Just as the river turns North in D-8 there is an exit out of the river to the south that will lead you through an orc/lizard infested area to the well in E-10.
7) There is a davoi mush that circles around the well. Make sure you are on the opposite side of the well from the mush before dropping invisi to interact with the well, which gives you the Knight's Soul.
8) Take your prefered method of transport back to San d'Oria and speak with Balasiel a final time to get your shield and the Paladin Flag.

I followed these instructions as a 32 Warrior and completed the quest solo. The post really made the task easy. I used 3 each of sneak and invis potions on the way in. Took about 2 hours.

The Pugils in the river did not aggro, but watch out for the Geezards and the Orcs. Made it most of the way back out without potions by being careful. Got aggro'd and did the death warp rather than use the Instant Warp Scroll and because I was being cheap with the potions.

Anyway, the original post is great .... and it can be solo'd.

Just thought I'd make a little side note that you don't have to be on the opposite side of the Davoi Mush to turn invis off. They detect by sound. You could be sittin on his jelly like structure with invis off (sneak on!) and not get aggro'd.Anyway, honest mistake, not a huge one.

Just make sure you're on the opposite side if your sneak wares off.....eep!

If anyone on the Cerberus server would like to try this out please let me know. Tried it on Sunday with 3 others, but we were nailed 2/3 of the way there by someone who was training about 7 Orcs. The WHM tried to revive us and cast invisible on us, but unfortunately in our weekend stupor, it was basically impossible to go on any further. I attempted a suicide mission, but while trying to run and figure out my directions, it was basically a lost cause because invisible was running thin. When it finally did wear out, I was standing in the Davoi camp surrounded by every monster possible. So I died and had to go back to the jungle and re level.
Any high lvl WHM on cerberus feel like doing a random act of kindness. I spent all my money on prism powders, apple pies, and sneak oils... and didn't get anywhere :0(

Our current party is:
Disreele <me>: 34SAM/15THF
Driadyte: 32BLM/16WHM
Finesse: 32BLM/15WHM
Zavender: 30WAR/13MNK

Contact any of us and we'll arrange a time that you can join us. We wont have to bother sneaking around, we'll just kill anything that aggros.

I take it you have been to Davoi? There was a lvl 41 a lvl 32 a lvl 33 and myself a lvl 30 and we all died within a few hits from the Orcs with arrows once our invisible wore off. When I ventured further into davoi with invisible I shuddered to think of anyone going in there under lvl 60 as there were orcs everywhere in sight.
But I'm game for kicking some orc butt this weekend granted I keep lvling the way I have been..

OK, So I Was A Thirty WAR. I Died a couple of times trying to get a Adv. Job, and deleved a couple of times also. Then I decided to get Paladin.

This was very hard. I started the quest. Revival Tree Root was easy, I got it in the AH. Ordelle's Cave was easy. I got aggroed by Mushrooms but i beat them, Easy, Got Dark Crystals, Cool, And then I went back. I waited some time and got the Third Quest.

So Now, I wait some time, get more experience so i dont delevel, get a couple more jobs. Ok, Im ready to go. I get a 73 WHM to help me, under the influence of Gil, Some dont do it for free. I get there and im at the well. I talk to it and dont get anything. So I checked my guide AND I FORGOT TO TALK TO THE GUARDS! So now the WHM is mad. He gets me out. And then Thats It. I Still Havent Done It.

so i went and go more sneak/invis, got as far as i could, waited for clear area, used em again. and got to the well,. waited for them to wear off and grabbed the knigsoul, (while the slime thing was still there), and ran back invis/sneak. no probs, no outside help.

Ok here's the deal: do NOT go left after reaching the first broken bridge. Go RIGHT! I can't tell u how mad i was when i went right instead of left, and ended up like 20meters away from the well. I had to go back to the beginning, and this time go right....unfortunately i died b4 i could reach the beginning (masks ran out). And for god's sake stick to the water! the dirt paths start to turn into a hill. So there r 2 levels, the 2nd (all dirt) or the ground level (dirt 'n water0 the well is on the GROUND level. Oh, and be aware of blockades. Pugs aggro sound, so do lizzies. orcs aggro sight. However, most things there can identify u by sent....i hear though monsters do not aggro sent tho..........Goodluck. If u r trying to pay a wtmg try 8k....i hear the going rate is 7k....but hey, he/she deserves the tip, and 8k shouldn't be too much of a pain.

Sorry to put this comment.. but did the WHM that was leading you know what he was doing? You shouldn't have to die on this quest.. I've proved it. I've already helped 3 people get passed the last portion of the paladin quest with out incident of aggro and of course death. If you're guide knows what their doing you should be good. Also paying someone is great and all but that's one trend I don't want to start. Granted the 8K in gil you where wanting to pay someone is great but its totally unnecessary. I feel for other people that needs help cuz at one point i needed help. I just try to return the favor that some nice hi-level did for me.

You don't need deodorize for that quest. Just sneak and invisible. Try not to run to far ahead of your supporting RDM. Make a macro that will warn him like /p <call4> INVISIBLE is about to wear off. Hold to recast! and one for sneak. This quest is really easy once you know where to go. You will need SNEAK and INVISIBLE all the way down the river. Once near the disused well.. hang back and wait till both INVISIBLE and SNEAK wears off. Then have the RDM or WHM recast SNEAK so you can touch the well and get the Knight"s Soul.

Sorry to hear that you got slaughtered. There will be a lot of orcs that will be ITs to you at that level. I just helped a lvl 30 war get his paladin yesterday without incident. Although I did have sneak and invisible spells to cast on him and me. Buy some prizm powder to compensate for not having invisible spell. Water route is the best way. Sneak is for pugils and invis is for the Orcish Farkillers that are above the cliffs during one portion... (Speaking about experience... during the early times I tried this quest to help people I found that you do need invis when running thru a section of the river. Orcish Farkiller killed me and a level 31 thf.. btw i'm a lvl 31 RDM.) Try the river definitely again with prizm powder. Once near the well.. wait or debuff your invis then recast your sneak once more. So slime wont aggro you. Then warp your self out.

Will I be ok with sneak and invis alone. I'm a lvl 34RDM. I can keep the sneak and Invis on myself.

Yes the water route is the best route. Even high level's that i've encountered take people through the river. Using Sneak and Invis is just all you will need for this.

Hello everyone. I got my Paladin advance job thanks to a High Level Darkknight named "Ras". Who paved the way for some of my LS buddies to get their Paladin Subjob on Midgardsormr. Its very easy.. I'm a level 31 RDM/ 13 WHM. A level 31 WHM / sub forget at this time, A 30 WAR / 12 MONK and I did this yesterday. To make it short we just alternated casting sneak and invisible until we got to the "well". Recast sneak on the WAR so she can click on the well to get the "knight's soul" and boom we're done. Using Scroll of Instant Warp to our chosen Home point with no deaths.. (Thanks to the Warrior for her calmness during the final portion when I kept yelling "CLICK THE WELL!.. CLICK THE WELL!!!" And she calmly said "I need sneak.. i need sneak. My sneak wore off." lol. So I recast sneak on her and she got it without aggro.) If anybody needs help on Midgardsormr to get final portion with this quest. Send /tell to "Honor".
stupid mush!

no one seemed to mention the IT Davoi Mush slime mob that hangs out right by the well and totally killed me =P Next time I hope I'll get lucky and the slime wont be there or maybe get some high level help.
