Summary

Solve the riddle of the task book.

Walkthrough

To become a Paladin, you must complete three quests for Balasiel. You can start by getting the quests from Balasiel around level 10, but you can only change your character's job to Paladin after the third quest has been completed. Balasiel won't give you that one unless you are at least level 30, like all other Advanced Job quests.

The final task involves solving several riddles from ancient books of knightly learning. Balasiel first reads from the Book of Tasks; the meaning behind the passage is for you to ask the guards on the second floor of the guardpost in Victory Square for more information. When you speak with the first guard, Cahaurme (Southern San d'Oria, J-9), you receive the Book of the East and the second guard, Baunise (Southern San d'Oria, H-9), gives you the Book of the West. Additional sources tell you that you must retrieve something from Davoi and give it to Balasiel.

In area (E-10) of Davoi, there is a Disused Well. Be sure to have a form of Sneak and Invisible as the pugils aggro sound the orc aggro by sight. There will be a Davoi Mush near the well, but if you keep Sneak on, he won't be able to see you. Check the well to obtain a Knight's Soul. When you return to Balasiel with the item, he gives you a key item: Kite Shield and you are knighted. You can now become a Paladin.

got this last night with my level 36 warrior....i used powder and oil from the start...but used it too soon....i didn't realize that they wore off b4 i even hit the broken bridge....needless to say i was nervous about finding a safe spot to reuse items....however i didn't draw aggro from any of the orcs...they all conned as not worthwhile....the pugs didn't aggro either....as i got to e-10 i reused the powder just in case...i didn't want to get that far just to die inches from the well...the Mush conned as decent and the orcs around the well conned as even....i grabbed the soul and warped out using scroll....much easier than i thought after initially reading this thread....thanks for the great directions i found the well in under 5 minutes...this is much more do-able than anticipated...good luck to all who come next...

Accomplished this using my 41rdm/19whm along with a 38whm/blm who I ran across doing the Squire's Test II (STII) portion of the Paladin quest. Since she didn't know what to do after STII, she followed me to do the final portion. We followed the directions given by Genashi in an earlier post on this thread, and they were spot on! Having a map also helps to see where you have to go, although it does cost 3000 gil to acquire it.

We kept up sneak/invis the entire time through, even though you only really need sneak for the pugils in the river you run along. Just wanted to err on the side of caution. We did take breaks to recast sneak/invis, and we made our way to the well. The Davoi Mush conned Easy Prey to us, but as anyone who plays a mage class knows, an EP can still present quite a challenge. So, the plan we came up with was for her to drop invis and get the Knight's Soul. If the Mush aggroed her (which it did) she would hold out long enough for me to get the Knight's Soul and then get the Mush to aggro me through judicious use of nukes. While doing that, she would cast Teleport to get us out of Davoi. The plan worked out well, although her first casting of Teleport was interrupted by the Mush's AoE attack (which did anywhere from 150-200 dmg to the WHM). My recommendation would be to definitely take along a WHM not just for the Teleport but also to cast sneak/invis if you are a class that does not have these spells available. Sneak oil/prism powder is a viable alternative though it can be quite pricy. Even if you do kill the mush, there are a lot of high lvl orcs that stand between you and the exit. I would not recommend doing this as a large group since as mentioned earlier, it is very difficult for a WHM or RDM to maintain sneak/invis/deo/etc. on many people at once. Good luck!

Genashi had a great post, I put markers at those areas on my map and went with that.... the pugils either don't agro (unlikely) or sneak will do (Not sure, maybe I got lucky going past them, but I went w/o invisible) though after I got past the long river and the turn south I ran to the well with sneak and got agrod, so yes its good to have both (Sneak/Invisible) if at all possible. With 660 life I made it out with 16 hp (glad I subbed war b4 I left ^^;;) also, if you move quickly and effectivly it should only take a maximum of 4 each of your powder/oil (I used 2 silent oils, 1 prism powder, the prism ran out early so I decided to risk it w/o using my last powder)(I wore no armor, I heard it increases time on both silent oil and prism powder) anyway I hope this helps...

On your own
# Mar 26 2004 at 12:23 PM Rating: Good
I did this quest on my own, easy enough at lvl 30 war. It did however, cost a bit.

Davoi Map 3k
Stack of Silent Oil 5k
Stack of Prism Powder 5k
Scroll of instant warp - 700 conquest points (+/-)

I rode my choco right up to Davoi, wandered in and promptly met up with a bunch of orcs that had been trained there. I guess the healing lvl 50 theif right outside the entrance should have tipped me off. After I heal back up, and give them enough time to wander off, I pop back into Davoi and start sending tells. There's about 6-7 people on so I ask a few for escorts. Most dont answer, but a few do saying they are busy, and I politely respond back with a "thanks anyways, good luck".

Finally I decide to just do this on my own. I invis, and prism up, and run in like I own the place. Mistake. I aggro an orc and barely make it back to zone. You cant run by orcs when silent, you gotta walk by them. Running still makes enough noise to aggro.

So I heal up and try again. Running along till I have to pass too close to an orc, and then walking. I also followed the directions by Genashi, they were right on. THANKS A TON GENASHI.

Quote:
Davoi (sneak and invis are necessary)
5: Head to I-8 and drop down to the river from the bridge. (Only pugils are along the waterways.) Go South to I-9, turn west and follow the water to D-8. Head south from there through a small orc / lizard infested area to the tip of the peninsula in E-10.

I could run straight by pugs without a problem, stopping once to redo the oil/powder. I got all the way to the well without aggro. THere was a war lizard guarding it but that didnt worry me, I had passed plenty of those, so I walked right by it. The Mush was a different story though. I didnt want to tangle with that. I went ahead and activated defender though just in case and its a good thing I did.

As soon as I got near the well, even though the Mush was on the other side, it aggro'd me. I never engaged though, I just clicked on the well and got the soul. Then, ignoring the Mush and its constant crits, I activated my Instant Warp scroll and made it back to Sandy with 26 hps.

Through the trip I only used 5 prism powders, and 5 silent oils. And that was with me getting going the wrong way once, and being very careful.

Either way, there's no need for high level help if you just spend a bit of cash to do it yourself. Much faster this way... believe me.

Did this at lvl 50

After I goot the book I went to Davoi, met 2 30-33 players who also needed to do this quest so we partied up, had du kill every Pugil and orc on the way there and when we got to the well I had 1/4 -1/3 HP left, thought it was enough to kill the Davoi Mush.. Got it down to about 3% HP then it killed me.. and the other two who was with me.. one of them managed to get the item before he died.

I lied dead there and tried to get raise but couldnt..
Returned to HP and went back there 10 minutes later, first thing I saw there was a AF RDM what could have raised me if i didnt had respawned.

And when I check the well it says: "An old well" or something like that ><

Forgot to talk to one of the guards...

If you have the Dragoon quest opened already, like myself, Morjean will only tell you about the Wyvern Egg. This is OK. I simply talked to him, realized he was worthless at this point, but went ahead with the Squire's Test II anyway. I completed it without a problem.

I just did this quest with a LS member, who was a level 30 WAR (naturally, not enough exp to avoid delevelling from death.) I was a level 31 WHM, also trying to get the quest done.

Got to Davoi, cast Sneak and Invis on both of us, and got a little ways before stuff started to wear off. (When you've got 4 stealth spells active, one of them seems bound to be a dud.) We ended up stuck in a passageway with orcs close on both sides, and everything starting to wear off. I cast Sneak on my friend, and it was already starting to wear off by the time I could cast Sneak on myself. Then MY sneak started wearing off while I was casting Invis! Without enough MP to try again, we ran for it - and promptly got aggro from a bat. Which took off my invis. Which drew aggro from a Gladiator.

My friend managed to use his Warp scroll but I wasn't so lucky. No matter, I had safety exp. But he didn't and he couldn't afford the conquest points for another scroll. He still wanted to try again though, so we headed back. This was when I got the idea to go along the river. The river is a GODSEND to people trying to get through by stealth, since you only need Sneak.

Right at the last area though, my Sneak was starting to wear off in front of a bunch of War Lizards. I had to run for the passageway just northeast of the well, where a few other things were coming off and I had to recast everything again. Trouble is, an Impaler just had to march right up the pathway while I was finishing up the last spell - Invisible on myself. I drew aggro and we ran for it. Both of us made it to the well, losing status effects like mad, and we got the key item. Then promptly died. (I had about 30 HP left when I got mine. Thank goodness my friend provoked the impaler.) Friend delevelled in the process, but we had the item and were going home.

Both of us finished the quest when we got back.

Morals of the Story:
1. Use the river.
2. Keeping Sneak/Invis on multiple people is HARD.
3. You CAN finish the quest if you delevel during it.
4. It is possible for one WHM at only about the level to be doing the quest to escort another level 30 through it. But it's hard. But also fun.

(Edit: Typo.)

Couple more directions on part II

A couple more directions to save time:

When you go to the La Theine to enter the crack at F-6, you must enter from the West side. I was running all over the East side before I found the entrance to the west. You should see an NPC standing next to the slope that you go down. If you talk to him, he'll mention that there are others down there doing rescue drills or whatnot.

When you enter the caves, head WEST. I went East the first time and ended up on the wrong side of G-7. You do not need a map to do this, as the tunnels are pretty much one-way once you're in the right direction. It'll take you up and down, but keep going. You'll eventually end up in G-7. You will probably want to check the graph now and then to see what < pos > you're at.

The water you need to find is pretty big. It *is* noticible, as it glitters rather than looking muddy.

You may need to dip your hands into the water more than once to get the dew. If you do not get the message "Obtained Key Item: Stalactite Dew" once you target and select the ??? mark under the stalactite, then you have not gotten what you need.

Once you go back to Balasiel, he will give you the certificate. It's not an actual item that will take up room in your inventory. It is a key item that will stay on you, so you won't lose it.

If you have trouble finding Balasiel for any of these quests, take the tunnel at the end of Watchdog Alley. Midway, you'll see a somewhat hidden path to your left. Follow that until you get to Balasiel.

I was able to do the first 2 quests on a level 28 WHM without getting seen even once by any of the monsters. I did not have to use invisible or any of the other "can't see, hear, or smell me" spells. The third is a completely different story, though. I have yet to do the third part of this, but from reading previous posts, it must be a doozy.

You and your guide

If you plan on going on the third part of the PLD quest, and you plan on bringing a guide (As I did, because she knew the way and my sense of direction is horrible), Make sure that both of you are invised, if not sneak/invised, at the beginning. We didn't even make it to the river when she drew aggro from an Orcish Farkiller (I think his name was x.X) who shot her for 100+ damage twice. She yelled at me to warp, so I used my instant warp scroll, and suddenly was back in San D'oria after having spent all of five seconds in Davoi. Thankfully she managed to escape with flee/hide (I would've felt responsible if she died).
So, if you're going with a guide in the 50's range (Mine was 52ish), make sure you're both invised through the first part. The rest? Well I'll be able to tell you that when I go back there ^_^;

I'm skipping to the 2nd part of the quest, the 1st part is self explanatory. (fyi..you can obtain the "Revival Tree Root" from the auction house if you'd rather not hunt for it.)
-----------------------------------------------
A Squire's Test II

Southern San d'Oria
1. Speak to "Balasiel". (2nd floor ledge in F-7 across a short wooden walkway)
2. Speak to "Chanpau". (in a courtyard in E-7 below "Balasiel")

Northern San d'Oria
3: Speak to "Morjean". (the cathedral in L-7 first room on the left)

La Theine Plateau
4: Go to the ravine at H-7, this is the proper entrance to use to access Ordelle's Caves for this quest. The entrance is in the western most tip of the ravine.

Ordelle's Caves (Sneak and invis may be necessary in the waterfall room)
5: You begin at K-3 in Ordelle's caves, from here, head South West until the map changes, you'll enter a room with a waterfall on your left. (Area G-7)

6: Activate the ??? in the pool at the feet of the waterfall. (This will wet your hands so you will be able to hold the Stalactite Dew.)

7: Now, quickly go to the middle of the room in G-7 and activate the ??? there to obtain Key Item: Stalactite Dew. (if the dew slips through your hands, simply wet your hands in the pool and try again.)

8: You can easily backtrack to the entrance and head to the Crag: Holla to get a chocobo back to San d'Oria, or warp.. the choice is yours. Either way, go back to San d'Oria and speak to Balasiel. He gives you Key Item: Squire Certificate.===============================================
A Knight's Test

Southern San d'Oria
1. Speak with Balasiel again, he gives you Key Item: Book of Tasks.

2. Go to L-8 and take the stairs (SE corner of the area) up to the 2nd floor of the guardhouse and speak to "Cahaurme", he gives you Key Item: Book of the East.

3: Go to F-8 and take the stairs (SE corner of the area) up to the 2nd floor of the guardhouse and speak to "Baunise", she gives you Key Item: Book of the West.

Jugner Forest
4: Head to the southern most tip in G-12, this is the entrance to Davoi.

6: The well is in the end of that peninsula, and guarded by a "Davoi Mush". As long as you are on the opposite side of the well from the mush, it shouldn't aggro you. Drop invis, click the well and obtain Key Item: Knight's Soul

7: From here, I used a scroll of instant warp to get out and back to San d'Oria. Once back in town, go speak to Balasiel again, he awards you with a Kite Shield and the ability to become a paladin! Congratulations^^

You can't take a Chocobo into a dungeon, it'll just refuse to enter and you'll end up back outside the entrance.

Go back and talk to Balasiel. Someone stated earlier that if you follow these directions to a tee, you will not talk to Balasiel twice, and you will not be able to get the dew.

And an FYI, you didn't list your server.

My Paladin Quest Experience...
# Jan 31 2004 at 11:08 PM Rating: Default
And I'm not even level 30 yet!

Two of my FFXI friends asked for my help with the quest. They're both level 30 warriors with monk subs. I'm a 29whm/14rdm, with my ever-precious raise, invis, and sneak. I've read about the quest, knowing that you need sneak/invis and you should be ok, so I agreed, because I'm nice like that. =)

Well, we got lost umpteen times in Davoi (my first time there, and without a map), and I must've cast sneak/invis at least 60 times. I, of course, brought my Not-So-Instant Warp scroll with for after completion, and, a smart move by me, I also brought along a Scroll of Instant Raise. If you look at the map of Davoi, there are two pieces of land in the E-10 grid, the eastern one, which is a square piece of land, and the little piece of land in the southwestern part of the map. We went to the square while looking for the well, and a party member's sneak wore off at a bad spot. Silly lizards aggro'd her and myself, since I was trying to cure her while she fought (mistake on our part).

I used my Insta-Raise and then raised the fallen party member. Our other member had sneak and invis still intact, so she wasn't harmed. We were in a semi-safe spot between Orcs and Lizards, so we sent our other member around the square with invis/sneak to check it out and see if she could find the well. As chance has it, she dropped once she was out of our sight. We waited for her to get back online, and as soon as she did, her invis wore off, and she aggro'd an Orc, which she pulled to us, and it killed her and me.

Since we knew we were close, I respawned in Jeuno, chocobo'd it back to Davoi, cast invis/sneak on myself (which I only had to cast two more times on my way to them), raised our fallen member, and then had the idea of me escorting them one at a time to the well, so they wouldn't have to wait for me to cast them three times. So off me and one girl went, only to find that the closest path was barricaded, as someone said below, but I had not read. Both of us died right there from invis wearing off. But now we knew what we had to do.

We respawned, went back, stayed in the water the entire way... Davoi Mush was there when we got there.. not a problem as we had sneak on. I returned to our member still waiting at the square and invis/sneak'd us to the well. By then the Blubbering Bulge had appeared. The first member I escorted was still there, as she had not moved since her sneak wore off. The second member did her stuff at the well, and was killed immediately afterwards when she moved, which was ok since she was going to Ghetto Warp anyway. I Not-So-Instant Warped myself out of there.

So, my conclusion is that this is NOT a hard quest, as long as you know where you're going. You don't need a high level player (Japanese OR American) to "help" you. A WHM with sneak/invis will do fine. But I would suggest going one person at a time with the WHM instead of a big party because of the effects wearing off. All in all, I think I'll do this by myself once I hit 30, since it's so easy, even though Pally isn't my first or second adv job choice. If you'd like assistance, and you're on the Siren server, feel free to /tell me @ Jyneefur and ask politely.. I know it like the back of my hand now. =)

I got very lucky with this I think. The whm that was gonna help me was not online so I decided to do it myself. I went to Ah and bought 3 of each, invis and sneak potions. I went to Davoi as a lvl 30 war. I used one sneak and one invis and started running. I kept stopping and looking for spots I could make it to in case they wore off but aside from that I kept running. When it was all said and done I was at the well waiting and neither of the potions had wore off yet. So I made it with just one of each. Grabbed the item and used a warp scroll and was gone. I had been there and knew the path before hand so it was a straight shot but I was still lucky the potions lasted that long.

The last part is really easy to solo if you have plenty of Silent Oils and Prism Powders. I made it to the well, dodged the blob, and got the item in under half an hour this way. It was about as easy as the dark knight quest, but it took a lot less time

I have seen some high level (40~50) American players as well. But I have only seen level 60+ players that are Japanese. I'm on Alexander.

I am one of those who had to get some help from some of the nice Japanese players. As a lvl 30 war, I fought my way relatively easily pass the Fighters/Cursemakers/Sergeants. I tried to go deeper, and got to the camp with IT Beastrider and Champions.

I was going to head back for oil/powder after taking a longer look, but a bestrider, and champion aggroed me. I ran and had a bunch of lower level orcs linking into a small train. That was when these 3 *** players helped me out. Their levels were hidden, but one of them killed the beastrider in 2 hits. I asked and they decided to help me on the quest.

They sneaked and invis me to the well and killed the jelly. I'm not sure what level it is, but the 3 *** players took a while to kill it. I did join in midway (after inspecting the well of course) and did exactly 1 damage. I don't think even those *** players can solo it, so I advise others to avoid it.

Anyways, I do believe if you have sneak/invis, you should be able to safely avoid the jelly. Good luck!
