Summary

Solve the riddle of the task book.

Walkthrough

To become a Paladin, you must complete three quests for Balasiel. You can start by getting the quests from Balasiel around level 10, but you can only change your character's job to Paladin after the third quest has been completed. Balasiel won't give you that one unless you are at least level 30, like all other Advanced Job quests.

The final task involves solving several riddles from ancient books of knightly learning. Balasiel first reads from the Book of Tasks; the meaning behind the passage is for you to ask the guards on the second floor of the guardpost in Victory Square for more information. When you speak with the first guard, Cahaurme (Southern San d'Oria, J-9), you receive the Book of the East and the second guard, Baunise (Southern San d'Oria, H-9), gives you the Book of the West. Additional sources tell you that you must retrieve something from Davoi and give it to Balasiel.

In area (E-10) of Davoi, there is a Disused Well. Be sure to have a form of Sneak and Invisible as the pugils aggro sound the orc aggro by sight. There will be a Davoi Mush near the well, but if you keep Sneak on, he won't be able to see you. Check the well to obtain a Knight's Soul. When you return to Balasiel with the item, he gives you a key item: Kite Shield and you are knighted. You can now become a Paladin.

I looked at the boards here and thought it was going to be harder than it really was. The first mission was easy, I had one in my inventory. The second did require me to unequip my weapon and wash my hands. The third was a lot easier than the forum described. The pugils were far and few between and there were barely any orcs. Maybe there was someone farming, and i was lucky. at the well the slime ignored me, so i grabbed the soul and ran back. i do appreciate the guides that everyone posted, it did help me know what to expect. Thanks to all.

i just did this last night... before i got the the river i decided to refresh oil and powder, got to a place where i tought i was safe and an orc moved behind my back and started hacking at me, i died and deleveled, i had to spend another while getting back to 30 -_-
went back in, this time looking around very well before reapplying oil and powder, there are a lot of areas where you can safely apply it in the river
did it as a 30 war/thf

Can anyone help me with some queries?

I am having trouble with Part II of this Flag quest, specifically "A Squires Test II"

While i was at the ??? at the sandy spot in ordelles caves, i was unable to get the drops. It kept saying "The staclatite drops slips thru your fingers"

I went as a Lvl 30 WAR/THF, fully equipped.

Can anyone advise me?

many thanks.

# Sep 11 2006 at 2:47 PM Rating: Decent
There should be a little pond back behind where you pick up the staclatite. You have to wash your hands at the ??? there first then run over to the other ??? where the staclatite is. If you get there fast enough then you'll be able to pick it up.

if you have any weapons in your hands when you go to grsb this it will slip through your fingers. so try unequiping your sword snd shield then try for it. its the same when you try for sirens tear.

# Dec 23 2006 at 4:20 AM Rating: Decent
No, the siren's tear requires you to remove your gloves and you must wash your hands for the dew. I never had to unequip anything for the dew.

Sirens tear is IDENTICAL.
Take off sword, Gloves are fine.

I did the quest as WHM 33. The WHM is the best choice for this quest since you can cast your own Sneak and Invisible. You can have Sneak and Invisible by using Silent Oil and Prism Pouder, but they are expensive at Auction House.

I started in San d’Oria, but before getting a Chocobo I bought an Instant Warp Scroll from Bastok consulate (from the guy who casts the Signet).

Once in Davoi I cast the Invisible. You don’t really need the Seank until you reach the river, since the Orcs are apparently deaf. I bumped into them many times while invisible, they didn’t even notice. When I reached the river at J-10, I found a safe spot to cast the Sneak first, then the Invisible. Always the Sneak first, because if you cast it over the Invisible the Sneak will cancel the Invisible. As you go up the river you will receive notice that those effects are wearing off. Before they wear off find a safe spot, wait until they wear off and recast them.

I was often checking the map to make sure that I am going in the right direction, also I printed it out, it helps to have it under hand. I took the river to North-East first, then straight to East. I got out of river at D-8 and went South. The Disused Well is at E-10. It is easy to get to it. If you are still Invisible, cast Sneak to remove it. I targeted the well pressed [Enter] and got the the Knight's Soul. Then I used the Instant Warp Scroll to get to my HP at San d’Oria.

It took me 10 minutes to ride on Chocobo and 15 minutes in Davoi. 25 minutes total.

I hope this helps. Good luck.
my run in Davoi

I completed this quest last night, pretty much following these guides to the letter. I began by purchasing 5 prisms, 5 oils, a re-raise scroll, and a warp scroll, all of which came in handy during my adventure.

To begin, I chocoboed to Davoi as a 30 warrior 14 whitemage. Upon entering, I divested myself of all my armor, then applied both the oil and finally the prism. I debated applying only the prism at first, because I knew the first leg of the journey would only involve orcs. However, I tend to be a cautious person, so I applied both at the start because I wasn't sure whether I'd have an orc-free spot to apply the oil before entering the river. As it turns out, I was correct, because when I reached the river, there were both orcs on the shore, and pugils in the water.

The silent oil seemed to wear off rather quickly. (A message appears in red, indicating when it's about to wear off. It gives you about 10 seconds before it dissipates.) So, once in the water, I quickly found a lonely spot and reapplied it. Of course, reapplying the oil negates the prism, so I had to reapply that too. That left me just 3 oils and 3 prisms.

I continued on my journey down the river, taking quick peeks at my map along the way. The banks of the river are rather high, and, as I felt time was important, I didn't do much sightseeing. On the way I passed several knots of pugils, and about midway, the oil once more began to wear off. Luckily, I was in a lone spot, so I reapplied both oil and prism in the water, leaving me only two of each left. I continued on the way, and here's where things got ugly.

After travelling for what couldn't have been more than 25 seconds, and having just passed knot after knot of Davoi Pugils, the oil once more started to wear off. I knew I couldn't turn back to find a lonely spot, and I wasn't sure if I could safely reapply the oil amid all the pugils surrounding me. So, I decided to forge ahead, hoping for a clear, lonely spot somewhere beyond the latest knot of pugils. Unfortunately, the oil wore off quicker than it had before, and as I stopped to reapply it, my footsteps made a few splashes and 3 pugils agroed me. I finished reapplying the oil and prism, but it was already too late. The pugils were on me. My health was down one quarter since I had no armor on, so I immediately used my Scroll of Re-Raise and continued on my journey, with 3 pugils in tow, hoping to find a lonely spot to die in. I came to the last turn in the river, very low on health, where there were 2 more pugils, completely disinterested in me. The three on me killed me, though, and, after I was good and dead, they disappeared. But the other two lingered, so I didn't confirm the re-raise, hoping that they would wander off and allow me some privacy to re-raise, reapply my oil and prism, and finish the quest.

Luckily, at this point, a player appeared and helpfully dispatched these two pugils. I thanked her, raised myself, rebuffed both oil and prism (my last of each), and continued to the well. Even though I was low-health (35 hp!), neither the orcs, the lizards, or even the jelly detected me as I passed them. The player from before attacked the jelly and allowed me time to remove my buffs, inspect the well, and gain the Knight's Soul. I thanked her again, and warped out, completing the quest.

In retrospect, I found 5 oils and prisms were the minimum required for this quest. The Scroll of Re-Raise was a life saver, and doing the quest as a level 30 warrior (instead of as a level 1 job) allowed me the added time to cast the Re-Raise when I needed it.

Does anyone know whether you can reapply your oils and prisms in view of hostile mobs without drawing agro?

I think the original comment to this post ("Use Provoke.... etc") shows that this person is ignorant of all other ways of tanking. The original post was a legit question on how to be a good tank as paladin. Provoke is of course essential but it is certainly not the only thing a good tank should do! As a Paladin, you have a wealth of hate holding capabilities. My adivce is:

1) Provoke as often as you can. Make sure to have a "Provoke ready" indicator built into your voke macro so you can tell when it is availiable.

2) Shield Bash as often as possible. This helps to build hate as well.

3. Cast Flash as often as possible. This is a great spell that helps build hate. A Paladin should essentially always to not only Provoke but also Flash a mob at the beginning of every fight to help build good hate.

3) Paladins can cure themselves for a reason, and it's not to save themselves from a lazy whm! Curing yourself is one of the most effective ways to build and hold hate. Often if a mob turns from you right after Provoking (say, towards a blm that just did 3 -aga spells in a row) a quick Cure II, III, or IV will turn the mob back to you even tho Provoke wasn't ready yet. Don't be afriad to use mp!!

4) Since you need mp for curing and pld is not a DD job, don't be afraid to heal with the mages in between fights! It's better for you to conserve hp and mp then to save your TP for a weapon skill that won't do much damage anyway (in comparison to the people who are supposed to be doing damage in your pt). Remember, you job isn't to score a 1000 dmg weapon skill on a mob, it's to keep the mob from attacking those people who are doing the crazy damage.

5) If you use these strategies effectively in a pt, you will not only be an excellent tank but will earn the respect of your pt for the amount of damage you can take without dying and the amount of hate you can hold. The ultimate test? Holding hate during Benediction without using Invicible!

Good luck!

When entering the caves, enter from La Theine's (H-8), then go to the water. Its quicker and slightly safer for lower levels, though i don't recommend it. (Read my previous post before this to learn why). Oh, and watch those aggros, they aggro 30 WAR, i know that.

Don't go to Ordelle's Caves with old equipment...

I went as a WAR30/MNK15 with level 10 scale armor and a Spatha. Not my best decision. I was aggroed by a Shrieker(sp?) that checked as Easy Prey. I decided to start attacking it, did, then ended up doing NOTHING to it. Even with Mighty Strikes, Boost, and Beserk, i was only doing 24 damage max... usually around 3. This is a warning to anyone that might try what i did, just don't be lazy and grab that old dusty equip from your mule you havn't been on in ages! Thats my lesson learned!

i did this quest with a full party of lvl 30s. We had a lvl 30 WHM and RDM. My brother died like 10 times because he went off on his own. The 2 other guys went the wrong way and they died and they were so close to the well. The other MNK went the wrong way too and he died so I was smart to stay by the WHM and go through it slowly. We got sneak and invisible and went through all the tough orcs and everything. I got to the well and i got the soul. Then i realized that there was a jelly thing. I didnt know if it agroed so I went back and tried to save my other party who died. I tried to find them but I got lost then died. But I had the Knight's Soul anyway so I was happy. I got the PLD and Kite shield and my party left.

I did this with a full party of 6. lvl 30s or higher. I had a lvl 30 WHM, a lvl 30 RDM, me a lvl 30 WAR/13WHM, a lvl 31 MNK, my brother lvl 30WAR/15WHM, and my friend Drakshao lvl 30 WAR. it took a while because my brother died like 10 times because he went on his own. the rest of us go sneak and invisible. 2 guys went the wrong way and got killed. i stayed with the WHM and we both survived. Its a very easy quest as long as you know what your doing. If you go the wrong way while your near tough enemies and your sneak and invisible wears off your dead... unless you can get the Knight's Soul before you die but the chances of that happening are very low.
Easy

This Quest is so easy... I soloed it as a Lvl. 30WAR/15MNK and it took me about 2 1/2 hours. The third task was the easiest. I used 3 prism powders and 3 silent oils and got the key item at the first try... If you have a map and follow the instructions on this page, there are no problems in finding the well and getting there safe...
