Summary

Zeid, the sole master of the way of the Dark Knight in Vana'diel, has been sighted in the Palborough Mines. If you seek him out, he may make you an apprentice...

Walkthrough

Completing this quest will allow you to change to the Dark Knight job.

Gumbah is on the 2nd Floor of the mines in a house. He sends you to Palborough Mines. You might have to talk to him a few times before he does, but eventually you will see a cutscene with Werei and Volker which talks about the Palborough Mines.

Once there, board the ship on the third floor at (H-8) and you will receive a two-handed sword. Equip the sword and start killing things. You need to kill at least 100 enemies with the sword in any area. Only Warriors and Dark Knights can equip the sword. Once you kill at least 100 enemies by dealing them the final blow with the sword, go to Beadeaux and a cut scene will be triggered that flags you as a Dark Knight.

NOTE: Do not kill an enemy with a weapon skill, as it will not count toward the 100 you need.

After the 100+ kills with the sword can you go back to bastok (or nearest city) change your job back to level 30 Job (im a RDM so i cant use this sword) take chocobo to beaudeux (with the sword in your inventory) and still get DRK job.
What zones for mobs?
# Jun 07 2004 at 10:47 AM Rating: Decent
I'm confused ppl. Are you supposed to kill mobs in Palborough Mines only?? or will the ones outside (easier mobs like hornets) work??

U can kill any enemy, anytime, anywhere, u can log, zone, whatever u want u will still have the same number of kills, and yes, u CAN use magics, ranged attacks, as long as u kill the enemy with the sword.
huh?
# Jun 02 2004 at 11:53 AM Rating: Decent
I though u just had to kill 100 of anything. I think it don't matter if u zone, am i right?
RE: huh?
# Jun 07 2004 at 2:23 AM Rating: Decent
Last night I killed 40 bees and stone eaters. Logged off, got on the next morning and killed the last 60. I zoned many times and I killed mobs in different zones so no it does not matter. You just have to have 100 final blows with the chaos.

After i kill 100+ mobs, can i go back to bastok, switch to my 30 job, THEN goto Zeid again? and can i get a chocobo too?

Man this sucks, I hate having a current quest that I can't complete. Im a 31 WHM ... I have a 7 WAR... but yeah. When I am killing stuff, does it all have to be of the same thing. Like ALL bees... Or it can be all different things but in the same zone. The hard thing for me is to get out the Beaudeaux or however its spelled. Thats my only prob.
Logging
# May 28 2004 at 5:35 AM Rating: Decent
I had to get to work, so I logged out while I'd killed only 50 mobs so far. I didn't leave the zone where I was killing stuff. My two questions:

1) If you are killed and have to zone back in, does counter reset?

2) If you log out, does it reset counter?

I'd imagine if you come back and resume the remaining 50 in the same zone, it would still count, but I didn't see any clear guidance on this one way or another. Any ideas?

From what I've been told by those that have done this quest if you log out you must start from zero once again. The same if you are killed and have to zone back it will reset back to zero.

The best thing is to use a warrior you have already leveled up to at least 10 and have him kill the lowest mobs in a starter zone so you have no fear of death and the kills are quicker.

Not true about logging out, it will not affect the count. Not sure about dying, but I'd hope it wouldn't make a difference either.

if you log out and you already killed 100+, then you log back in do you have to kill 100+ again?
???

When you go get this quest I know you have to have a Warrior Job. When you go to mines to get on boat and get sword, do you have to have your warrior as your main job then to? Can you go back and change jobs at your mog after you get on boat and get sword? Thanks
drop Chaosbringer?

Is there any reason not to drop Chaosbringer when I'm done with this quest?
Bastok
# May 20 2004 at 8:27 PM Rating: Default
As much as i DESPISE bastok, its definetly the best place to kill mobs, right outside the mines area, theres never anyone around and theres bees, worms and bats EVERYWHERE, it took me a half hour to finish
Good way to keep track of killed mobs

since warr can equip a bow even at lvl 1, you can use this method even if your warr is lvl 1

use a bow with 99 arrows to pull the monster. this has several benefits

a) you might hurt the mob a bit on the pull, yay. but you dont need to hurt it on the shot, you just need to use 1 arrow for 1 mob.
b) the bows delay should be better than the gswd, and you dont have to run after it to get its attention
c) when you're done with 99 arrows, you'll have killed 99 monsters. kill one more for your 100th monster

now the same warning with regular method: if the mob you pulled with the arrow kills itself, it wont count. so bees that do 'final sting' or goblins that die from bombs wont count.

you can avoid these types of mobs or just carry 198 arrows and add another arrow to your working stack whenever this monster kills itself so you'll still be at the right number of monsters needed.

or keep track of the ones that kill themselves. at the end of 99 arrows, if you had 10 suicide on you, then you really only killed 89.

spiritwulf's method of getting mobs that link then do an AoE on them is good too, as long as you know how many you linked.

Could I sub BLM, hit the mob with stone, then finish with the sword? would that count towards the 100 mobs?

As long as the last blow is done by the sword, it counts toward the 100
RE: blm?
# May 19 2004 at 1:37 AM Rating: Excellent
yes the sword does not need to do all the work, having a war leveled make a large difference though. My way was easy. I had a 34 War at the time a 25 whm so went 34war/17whm. Went to parlborough mines top floor and provoked 1 pit hare, ran all the way to the bottom of the mine aggroing every hare in the mines. A couple banishinga's later, some fairly fast sword work and 25 dead bunnies add to the 100 kills. Did it 5 times just to be sure and took me about 1hr total for entire quest.

for a screenshot you can go here :)

So let me get this straight... I'm a RDM17 right now, but when I get to 30, I make a WAR subjob and I go to the first NPC, get the quest, go to the next NPC, get the Chaosbringer, kill 100 mobs with it ( under WAR job ) and go back to the first NPC and I can unlock DRK? So I only have to use my WAR job once? ^^

No, WAR will have to be your main job to equip this sword. Better level it up ^^
Help
# Apr 30 2004 at 12:42 PM Rating: Decent
Unclear on how to complete this. Do I have to kill 100 at the same time or just use deathblow on each individual monster? And can the mob be any difficulty like easy's?
...
# Apr 27 2004 at 12:57 AM Rating: Default
1 easy way to do this if you don't have a war pass lvl10 is to get what ever your low lvl war is at and eat food that can give you as much dex or accurcy as you can, then run to a area that have lots of worms and start butchering them, they drop very fast. if you have pld then you can also use it too, the quest is not limited to war, it's which ever job you have that can hole great sword then you can do it with.

Sorry,

Thats wrong, not sure if it changed with a patch or anything. Paladins may be able to use Great Swords but this Great Sword can only be used by a WAR or a DRK.

So no you can't use a Paladin for it.

Even if you only have a lvl 1 WAR don't worry. Go to the starting area for a city like East Sarataruba place, or East Ronfare (can never remember the spellings, thank god for TAB) and a lvl 1 WAR can butcher stuff. Please not with this complete dog **** of a sword i recommend you either sub BLM and have stone to damage your enemies OR equip a bow and buy some arrows which take most mobs down to needing one or two hits. Nice and easy......And thanks to my link shell for all the help and info on this subject. Star Onion Brigade on Kujata......try the rest now try the best!
Thanks

The quest description listed is absolutely horrible, I couldn't get anywhere with it. Scrolled down and saw your instructions and they got me through the quest easily.

Ok can someone clear up some confusing things about this quest?
Do you have to be a warrior to complete this quest?
or need a war sub at least?or can you do it as a 30 rdm? (which is my highest lvl).

Anyone can do this quest, but you have to be a warrior to equip the Chaosbringer and attack the requisite beasties.

My highest job is a 34RDM, which is what I was when I unlocked the quest about three hours ago. I went from Zeruhn in to the Bastok mines, to my mog house, changed my job to my 7WAR (which I had absolutely no ranks in Great Sword), equipped the Chaosbringer, suited up, and went to work on the Huge Hornets and Tunnel Worms in North Gustaberg. It took about two hours, but I got in my hundred kills (keeping a precise tally), ran back, changed my job back to RDM, and hopped a chocobo out to the home of the uber-quadavs. I got the cut-scene, and became a Dark Knight.

If you've got little or no WAR levels, I HIGHLY suggest investing in some Meat Mithkabobs or Meat Chiefkabobs. They'll make the process a lot smoother. Those extra couple of points of damage seemed to make all the differance, especially when it's takes a beast from a four swing kill, down to a three. After your first fight with the Chaosbringer, you'll see what I mean!

Good luck on your quest!

Is neccesary kill the 100 foes in the same area?, or could i kill in differents parts?

For example:
10 foes in Zerume Mines
20 outside de Bastok
40 Valkrum dunes
30 etc.. etc...

I have that doubt because, i killed only 95 foes in Zerume mines..........I dont want to start again.......................

Since I don't see it mentioned specifically elsewhere, you must bring Chaosbringer WITH you to Beadeaux to finish the quest. heh

DO YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO EQUIP IT ONCE YOU GET THERE?

eg..CAN I BE MY HIGH LEVEL CLASS AND RIDE A CHOCO UP THERE?

>>>Well i tried it with my higher level character >>>who was unable to equip the sword and it worked!
>>>It's nice to answer your own questions...

Letter from Zeid
# Mar 23 2004 at 7:32 PM Rating: Decent
Hey there, I've currently obtained all Subclasses Except for Samurai, today I was bored and wondering around bastok after finishing up the Ninja quest when I decided to talk to everyone in the area!! I re talked to the little Galka that started the Dark Knight quest, and he gave me a Key Item: "letter from Zeid" now i read a post above saying that i have to re kill 100 enemies with the sword, but after i've done that where do I take it? Does it give you fame points or just another slow gimped sword that you have to be slightly higher lvl to use? Any Information behind this would be great.

Thanks
