Summary

Zeid, the sole master of the way of the Dark Knight in Vana'diel, has been sighted in the Palborough Mines. If you seek him out, he may make you an apprentice...

Walkthrough

Completing this quest will allow you to change to the Dark Knight job.

Gumbah is on the 2nd Floor of the mines in a house. He sends you to Palborough Mines. You might have to talk to him a few times before he does, but eventually you will see a cutscene with Werei and Volker which talks about the Palborough Mines.

Once there, board the ship on the third floor at (H-8) and you will receive a two-handed sword. Equip the sword and start killing things. You need to kill at least 100 enemies with the sword in any area. Only Warriors and Dark Knights can equip the sword. Once you kill at least 100 enemies by dealing them the final blow with the sword, go to Beadeaux and a cut scene will be triggered that flags you as a Dark Knight.

NOTE: Do not kill an enemy with a weapon skill, as it will not count toward the 100 you need.

Quest Series

This is part of the job flag quest series. Other quests of the series include:

30 RDM
# Dec 30 2003 at 9:39 AM Rating: Excellent
I recently was able to do this quest as a 30 RDM.

I went and spoke to Gumbah twice to get the cutscene.

I then went to Palborough, took the elevator up to the third floor, and hopped on the raft, and met Zeid, obtained the Chaosbringer.

Then I changed into my 1 WAR and killed 119 monsters right outside Bastok Markets. I killed 119 just to be safe. I kept losing count.

I died several times in the process, and had to run away several more, but everything worked out fine.

After a few hours of killing, I got back on my RDM, took the Chaosbringer to Beadeaux, and was flagged, no fuss.

Though I did have the Bastok Mission 3-1 open, so when I zoned into Beadeaux, it started that whole thing instead. If that happens to ya, just zone out and come back in, and you'll be fine.

This is a seperate quest from the Dark Knight quest. It is triggered after completeing the Dark Knight quest. If you still have your Great Sword of Suckiness (aka Chaosbringer) then you do not have to go back to Palborough to see him. If you dropped your sword, then you will go to the mines and ride the boat, like you did for the Dark Knight quest, to get another Great Sword of Suckiness.

The letter refers to bathing the sword in water. This refers to the Gusgen Mines. You are to go to a ??? by a pond, at J-7 on the top map, and trade the sword there. Your sword will be taken and you will be given Deathbringer.

When you talk to Gumbah, make sure you trigger a cut scene. When I first spoke to Gumbah, he spoke about someone who was going to die, I assumed that was enough to trigger the cut scene in Palborough. Not! Make sure you talk to him until the cut scene triggers where the kid talks to another galka about a famous dark knight, unless you want to make another trip like I did.

For those not familiar with the mines, the fastest way to get to the cut scene from Palborough is to take the elevator on the 1st floor (it's on the river if you have a map). This will take you to the same level as the dragon fight for mission 6 (the Emissary). Turn the opposite direction of the elevator entrance, then hang a left at the intersection. That should take you to the boats. Upon arrival in the Zerhun mines, the cut scene will occur and you will receive the greatsword.

Completed as a 30 WHM.

i just wanted to point out that i thought it humorous that he could rage about the stupidity of others and then make a glaring mistake like saying the cut scene ensues after entering "pashhow" when you get the cut scene when you enter baeudaeux. the rest of his info is quite accurate though.

What do you mean by "You don't need to be a warrior,"?

The sword is Ex and only War or Drk can use it. Please explain...
RE: War require
# Dec 18 2003 at 7:28 AM Rating: Default
I'm not the one who said that, but I think I know what he means...

You need to be level 30 to GET the quest... but you can be level 30 in any job to get it.

Go get the sword (again with any job you like... you might not be able to equip it yet but I'm sure you can still get the sword).

Then you need to kill those enemies. So switch to your warrior job (level 1 if you have to) and start killing with the sword equipped.

After you're done using the sword you can switch back if you want and go finish the quest.

You only need to be a warrior for the "kill 100 enemies with the sword" part. It's not that hard to understand. :P

Clearing up confusion
# Dec 14 2003 at 2:46 PM Rating: Decent
Okay, need to clear up a little confusion here.

Yes, you can log, change zones, etc. That's fine, the kills still count. You don't need to be a warrior, you don't need to be level 30 actively to finish the quest, only to receive it.

You don't need 300% TP to have it count. You can use the weapon skills all you like. The only issue is, you cannot use it as the killing blow.

The whole thing about the sword is, it must deliver the killing blow to the creatures. If it's killed by a weapon skill that is not a physical attack (ie, gives TP back when you activate it) then it won't count. Your safest bet is just to not use it on the newbie creatures.

As for newbie creatures, I think a lot of confusion arises from the huge hornets around the Bastok area. Their kill will NOT count if they use Final Sting. You didn't get the killing blow, they suicided. So if you are killing them, the ones that use Final Sting don't count.

Hope this clears up a few things.

No. That's wrong, you CAN NOT change zones, that's the KEY! As for logging, I'd assume that's treated like changing zones (Unless you killed over 100 so far). Also, I found that you need more than 100 kills, as opposed to people thinking you only need 100. I counted exactly to 100 while doing the quest (I admit it took longer than just killing without thought) and the quest didn't complete. Afterwords I counted again, but this time to 110. Worked then, try not to meet the minimum. You've already killed 100, kill 10 more for security :P.
RE: Clearing up confusion
# Dec 21 2003 at 10:36 PM Rating: Default
I counted to 110
but if what he saids about TP is true thats what i did wrong i think cause i was using an ice elemental weapon skill to kill some stuff.
Can You Log
# Dec 14 2003 at 6:31 AM Rating: Decent
Say I Kill 50 monster 1 hour and then log off...come back and kill say 60 more.... will i still get the cutscene?? or can't you log once you started killing?
RE: Can You Log
# Dec 20 2003 at 12:00 PM Rating: Default
Advanced Jobs are not ment to be easily attained! Do what needs to be done...Don't Log, Don't Zone...Just kill around 110! Easy if your in the right area! Just do it and get it done with...dont make it harder than it needs to be.

Hope this helps!

Just did this quest - 30MNK/12WAR

First time, got the sword, started wacking things while using WS's. Changed to MNK, Went to fort, no cutscene.

2nd time, wacked 100+ things, no WS's. Changed to MNK, went to fort, cutscene.

Theory: You need to make 100 killing blows with the sword at 300% tp. Which explains why using WS's doesnt work - cause your TP isn't at 300% for a lot of the killing blows.

Okay, some info.
I'm a THF30. My friend is a WAR30. We got the sword together. We split up and killed out mobs - he in about 30 mins, I had to change jobs to WAR1 and took about an hour.
I changed back to THF and we both headed to Beadeaux.
He got the cutscene, I didn't.
If you read the scenes, they talk about a WAR becoming a DRK to fulfill blood lust, the darker passions, etc. I think you HAVE to be a WAR30 to get this - that would explain why only the WAR and DRK can use the sword (PAL can use Great Swords but can't use the Chaosbringer).
Dunno, just an idea. Has anyone not a WAR30 been able to get this?

From looking out of the Item Shop on the second level? Go left down the catwalk, then take your first right. Then go right, and proceed a little down the catwalk. Go left, then down a little more, and finally right. You should be there. Unfortunately I don't have cardinal directions to help. =(

WAR 30 did it, no prob. THF30 did it, doesn't work. I think you HAVE to be a WAR30 for this to work.
Worked.

Me: Level 30 THF / 13 WAR

Firstly, Don't have anything aggro to you when you try to get on the boat, or you will trigger a bug that will make you unable to move (or respond to attacks) and all the enemies that are aggro to you get teleported to you, but ASIDE from that.

Got the Quest after releveling to 30, went to Mog House and Switched to level 13 Warrior. Got Sword and killed ~110 To Weak to be worthwhile newbie mobs entirely with sword. Went back to Mog house, Changed Jobs to THF. Took Chocobo to Bordeaux and got my new job.

Second Time

Me: Level 30 RDM / 1 Warrior

Got Quest, Went back to Windhurst (like the area better) Painstakingly killed ~110 with the Sword. Used a Crossbow to inflict damage but made sure i had the "Killing blow" with the sword. Died several times in the process. Changed back to RDM and went to Bordeaux, got DRK Flag.

Beadeux is through north gustaberg, konschatt highlands, and through pashow marshlands. the entrance to Beadeux is in the south east corner.

I killed the mobs as a level 5 WAR (after getting the quest with a 30 RDM), and ran back to Zied as WAR. You dont have to be 30 to finish this quest.

Cutscene worked fine this time

Heheh can someone tell me where is Beaudeax from bastok ? :] ty ty
It IS straight-forward
# Dec 07 2003 at 2:47 PM Rating: Default
I did this quest as a Lv 30 Monk. I used the Chaosbringer on the bees, worms, bats, etc right outside Bastok with my sub - Lv 14 Warrior, with Whm subbed at 7.

I did like 110 kills - kept a tally, then went to res area, changed back to my Lv 30 Monk/14 War and hopped on a chocobo to Pashhow/Bedeaux. It's pretty straight forward. When you go to Bedeaux, you must be Lv 30 when you talk to Zeid, and you must do it in one session. It's really not hard, it only takes about an hour to kill 100 mobs, depending on how crowded it is outside the gate to Bastok.

Hope this helps.
