Summary

In order to become a truly great hunter, one must be accepted by mother nature. In order for that to happen, one must gain the fang of a tiger, the fanged king. But it does not sound like any old fang will do...

Walkthrough

Note: You must be level 30 in order to begin this quest.

Speak to Perih Vashai at (K-7) in Windurst Woods. She wants you to watch an old sabertooth die and bring his bones back to her.

Head to the Sauromugue Champaign. Walk up the hill at (L-8) and find the cave located at (L-10). Three sabertooth tigers roam around outside the cave, so it's probably best to ride a chocobo there and bring a form of warp with you.

Examine the old bones and Old Sabertooth will spawn. Wait for him to die naturally, then examine the bones again to receive the key item: Old Tiger's Fang and bring it back to Perih Vashai and you will be flagged to change jobs to Ranger.

This is the easiest Advanced Job to earn. I did it completely without aggro as THF30. Take your choco as deep into cave as possible. When I got there, only 3 sabertoothes were out, 1 of which was even outside the cave. the other 2 wandered back and forth, but came no further than the entrance to the large room with the bones. Get off your choco as close to the back wall as possible. From there, examine the bones twice to spawn the Old Tiger, whos already BT to you (wont hit you cuz hes [Too Weak]). From there, just stand in the back and don't get aggro'd by the Tigers, who to me were [Tough]. When he is almost dead the Old Tiger will come back to the room. Examine the bones. Then, either work your way out slowly to dodge aggro, or [Perfect Dodge] => [Flee] to dash to the Meriphitaud Mts.

I'm currently a lvl 15 Hume Warrior/Monk on Odin server. Working my warrior class to 30 then planning on getting the Ranger advanced job.

I haven't personally tried to obtain the job yet but it doesn't sound half as hard as the Dragoon flag quest nor the Summoner flag quest. Oh come on guys... go here...bring this back...done! You can finish this quest faster than the Dark Knight flag ><.

To the people who actually died on this quest... all I got to say to you is... O _ o*

I talked to Perih Vashai and she did say go witness the life cycle of nature, but that was all that was said. Shouldn't there have been a pop-up box that allowed you to accept the quest? Or is that the way it's supposed to be?

thanks

Yes, it just is that way. The Bard flag quest is the same way if you haven't done it yet as well as a few other quests out there. Simply go to the cave and if you "hear a distance roar" (I believe this is what it said), then you did everything right.
Easy

Just did this solo as a lvl 32 THF.

Took a Choco to the cave and luckily, nobody else was there. Dismounted, checked the bones, and just hung out in the back of the cave waiting for the Old Sabertooth to die.

Sabertooth spawn

Just a word of caution when you summon Sabertooth. He will spawn behind you in the cave (towards the opening). I was expecting him to spawn on the bones themselves so I ran back towards the opening of the cave right into his waiting fangs! Thankfully I caught myself in time and ran to the back of the cave. I stood still and even when he came close to me I didn't get aggroed. I am a lv 40PLD/20WAR and got aggroed by all three tigers on the way in. Even though they were "too weak to be worthwhile" to me, they still put up a good fight. I probably would have had some problems if I had tried to fight all three at the same time.

I gave the 3 tigers a wider berth on the way out and didn't get aggroed. Good luck to all you future Rangers out there! =)

spawn point is right but wouldnt matter how close u get to the old tiger it will not aggro u no matter what
ok heres how u do it
# Feb 18 2005 at 12:13 AM Rating: Decent
Ok i just did this solo as lvl 30 war if u do it right no fighting involved. Get a scroll of instant warp. Then choco out to the cave and go all the way inside to the bones. Get off the choco and touch the bones. Stand all the way in farthest corner of cave(get in first person and get all the way in). Then just wait for old guy to die. You will be like right next to bones and when old tiger comes in u will think he gonna aggro u but if u dont move he wont. Just sit there in the farthest corner and dont move. He wont even come into the part by u till he is almost dead anyway so if he does aggro u just kill him. But if u dont move he wont aggro you, so u just watch him die then click the bones and warp out. P.S. you dont even need invis just stand there and dont move and hell ignore you and go about dieing.

DON'T KILL IT!
# Feb 12 2005 at 10:19 AM Rating: Decent
Just so everyone knows. When Old Sabertooth spawns, he is selectable and can be targeted for attack. If you are impatient, don't attack him or you will have to wait for the respawn timer to kick in. I did it and it took me an extra 10 min ><

Sanriku uses jump.
The Old Sabertooth takes 212 points of damage.
The Old Sabertooth falls to the ground.
Sanriku starts the quest over again. ><

I killed it and still completed the quest fine. What's her name wasn't so pleased that I did, but I still got the key item in the cave and unlocked the RNG job.

Since some of the comments on here were posted they seem to have changed this so that you click the bones and the Old Sabertooth spawns claimed with his name in red. Total piece of cake for me to do today... chocoed out (even though everything in zone cons as too weak to me now), dismounted choco, clicked bones, invised up... reinvised when it wore and just watched sabertooth's health drop... dropped invis, got the key item and warped outta there.

I think it might have been tougher trying to do this as a level 30 MNK which is when I accepted the quest though.

This is best way... if your mage or Tonko-able.
I did with 30War/Nin. Get close... but stayed away from young tigers then used warpscroll as well. Time to level it...

Getting to L-10

To get to tiger cave on L-10 you have to go north to L-8 and go up the hill, then back to L-10. I'd never been up there before.

Samething everyone else said: If you target the bones and get the "old" tiger fang, the beast just died before you got there... otherwise targeting the bones gets you the msgs stated below about 'he's growling' 'his footsteps are approaching' (paraphrasing).. It was kind of interesting watching the old sabretooth slowly die, i think because you never see anything die natually in this game, only battle... it's life and death and nature and respect for and old tiger, like the quest talks about..

I let a two people who showed up after me on chocos have the fang... invised one so they could run out and the other was a blk who just warped... the tiger first spawned at 22:00 and spawned again at 22:48, etc, very fast. So if someone is waiting there to get it, it's not a long wait.. or it wasn't for me.

I can see how you'd get nervous, tho, if you were waiting and had to use powders and oils to be invise from the younger generation waiting outside to eat you... I stayed well back in the cave, didn't venture out and the old tiger spawned three times and died three times and only one young one came about half way in then turned around.

whm'ing makes this easy quest to do
Too Easy For Me I Think

When I completed this quest for - Kyrah - I rode a chocobo with my boyfriend to the cave where the old tiger spawns. We dismounted and stood there for only a second. I thought, "What the hell," and clicked the bones and got the item. I warped back to Windurst and completed my quest without ever seeing the tiger.

My guess, it died right as I showed up and disappeared as I was rounding the corner. Oh well...
New Quest Summary
# Dec 28 2004 at 12:48 AM Rating: Excellent
It looks as if this quest has changed. I tried to follow what others had experienced before, but the Old Sabertooth was not spawning. Then my chocobo left me and I decided to see if I could just get the key item like others had.

I targetted the bones and got the response, "You hear the distant roar of a tiger. It sounds as if the beast is approaching slowly..." I then targetted the bones again and it said, "The sound of the tiger's footsteps is growing louder." Old Sabertooth then appeared around the corner, spawned red, presumably so that others would not be able to kill him. I waited for his life to go down, glued to the back wall since the other tigers will come pretty deep into the cave, which was about 4 or 5 minutes. When he was ready to die, he came into the room with the bones and died right in front of me. I targetted the bones again and received the key item "Old tiger's fang."

Yep Metachaos is right. Did this quest earlier today, happens exactly as he says, the old sabretooth instantly comes after you check the bones for the second time all you have to do is wait till he dies (which happens right on the bones) and then click em again to get your reward of the old fang. Just be careful on the way out those sabretooths are nasty to lvl 30's, at least i had a quick trip back to windy :-D

I just did this quest 5 min ago.....I got through the cave on a choco and there was no old tiger. I waited a while and there was nothing there....i had read other peoples posts about not even having to see the tiger. So i got off the choco and touched the pile of bones and nothing happened. I went down the tunnel a lil and saw that there was old tiger with about half life. I waited and he came to me and then he died. I touched the pile of bones again and bam got it. I would use my scroll but my lvl 60 pally friend is comin to get me cuz he needs help with something in Garlaige.
By the way I am a lvl 30 thief.

Okay, I went via chocobo to the tiger's cave. Old Kittyface hadn't spawned yet, so, I hung around, hoping my chocobo didn't leave me. Those Sabertooths patrolling around were more than terrifying.

Old Sabertooth spawned, so, I targeted him and had my chocobo follow him around. He had reached the halfway point of death when chocobo left me. Well, Old doesn't aggro, so, I just kept him targeted and watched his energy go down little by little. Once he was dead, I ran to the back of the cave and clicked on the bones. I got a fang and, too excited to notice WHAT kind of fang it was, I insta warped back to Windurst.

I traded the fang to the chieftainess, and she asked me why I'd killed it, or, something like that, and that it was meaningless to explain the fang's meaning to me. I was horrified to realize I'd gotten a normal, BLACK TIGER FANG from the pile instead of the key item OLD TIGER FANG. Furious, I talked to her about five more times and got the same message.

So, I got another insta warp, and headed on back to the cave to try again. There was someone farming here. I asked her to please leave the Old Tiger alone. I'm not sure if she was japanese or english or what, but, she left him alone. I've been stuck in that cave for about three days now, watching him die, and checking the bones. Only getting 'there are many tiger bones here...' now.

So, I decided, just recently, to try and go back to town and see if she'd say something different, so I could try again.

Scrolling through my items, about to insta warp, I was suddenly brutally slaughtered by tigers and de-levelled down to 29.

I'm going to go back to kazham later and level back up.

Once I do, I'm going to try this quest again. Now, can anyone tell me what I did wrong?

I completed this quest today.

I showed up, and the area surrounding the cave was empty. I went in, and the tiger was already dead, all I found was a pile of bones which produced the key item. I never even saw the mob, but it sure worked out well for me.

Also, sneak/invis on the way out if you're around 30 by yourself. When I left the cave, three tigers had spawned and aggro'ed me on the way out causing a very prompt death. Oh well, it was a quick trip back to Windurst if nothing else.

I got there and saw the Tiger when I got there. It took about 15 minutes for him to start dieing. Its pretty obvious when he does as is HP drops rather fast. Think mimic poison on a level 65.

So I see his start to dye and 2 high levels arrive as he is at 1/2. I say please don't kill it and of course a level ~65 DRK wastes it and then they are surprised that the fang is not there. He was there to help his friend get the quest done but he just messed it up for both of us. None of us got a fang. I was there for a while so It was not becasue of the proximity issue.

Anyways I got a PT invite and I left the are rather pissed. After I accepted the invite I get a tell from the DRK stating that the tiger just popped again. I tell my incomplete PT that I'm going back. I get there and the tiger has been dead for a while becasue it took me a while to get there. The DRK was nice enough to kill all in my way to get there, but it took a lot of time. I was aftaid that I'd not get it becasue I did not actually see it die or for that matter I was not even close when it did. Anyways, long story short I got in eventually and I got my fang even though I did not see it drop.

My recommendation is that you tell anyone farming there that you are there for the quest. People farm these tigers and the old one will link when it sees another tiger getting attacked. So your best bet is to politely ask people to let you get your drop before they get the changce to ***** you over unwittingly.

I'm wanting Ranger so badly that I decided to try getting the fang to hold onto it until I reached level 30, unlock the job then. I didn't realize that it's a key item. As such, you can't find it unless you've unlocked the quest first. Just wanted to mention this in case other people want it as badly as I. :-\

Yay! I got it! I'm thinking that you just need not be the blade that kills the beast. I was one of three people waiting, and someone killed the tiger. We all got the fang, since none of us engaged it. :-)

lvl 75?? While you have him you should do a hard quest. That's super ultra uber overkill for this one. You choco to the spot, watch him die, get off choco, click bones, warp back, done.
Easy quest
# Aug 05 2004 at 1:22 AM Rating: Decent
This is a very easy quest but only sometime.
If you are unlucky you get out there and there are like 4 Sabertooth Tiger.
So i was afraid to get off my Chocobo to get the Fang.
But luckily i had invis and sneak to get away when there was less sabertooths.
But all in all this is a EXTREMELY simple quest and worth it.
