Is it possible to do any of this quest before level 30?

Can I use a lvl 15 rdm to ride chocobo and do parchment trade in then die to warp back? Then take chocobo and do cut scene in Vulk then die to warp back? It is very easy to recover xp lost on a lvl 15 rdm so it is perfered to running or purchasing a chocobo to run back.

Bard Song Rune in Valk Dunes:

Go to C-6 and follow the tunnel to a beach. When you check map, you will not be on the map anymore. It is not in a Secret cave...it is right on the beach. B-7. Not at water edge but against the wall near some trees and flowers. =)

I had a hard time finding it because I was looking for a secret CAVE. So hope this helps.

Spoony!

Just completed this quest, thanks to the post below titled "The Real Walkthrough." The quest info at the top is misleading and confusing, and should probably just be replaced with thise other post, which is excellent.

Additional notes about the end of the quest in Valkurm: getting there and back is not quite as trivial as it sounds. The secret tunnel extends way off the map of the dunes, and there are goblins scattered everywhere along the path. At the end is another tunnel that goes to Gustav Tunnel, a high level dungeon. If you reach that tunnel, you've gone too far. Either ride in on a chocobo and warp back out, or be prepared to dodge and/or fight a few goblins on your way.

Oh yeah, the song rune stone is actually on the beach itself. If you're not watching for it, you can run past it into the next tunnel to Gustav instead.

This is the same guide for Bard quest as almost all other sites, and was obviously written by someone playing the Japanese version before the NA release in October.

There is NO "Piece of Paper" item in the game. The quest uses Parchment.

Parchment is now listed in AH:
Material -> Leathercraft

I think the title for this one is "Minstrel in Training"
Is this rally that easy?

So you don't have to fight ANY NM or anything to get this quest done? You just run around a lot? If it's that easy, I'm gettin myself a bard :)

Yes, it's an extremely easy quest, but it does take a good amount of time because you have to dismount to activate the song runes. You'll need to pay several choco fees as well, and 1k+ for the parchment, although the 5.1k payout will more than make up for all the associated costs.

Overall, BST+RNG are both shorter soloable adv quests.

I think it really needs to be added that you DO NOT ACTIVATE THE QUEST.

There will be no quest in your list, all you have to do is talk to Mertaire and then the bartender, who tells you about the song runes in the peninsula. And yes, the parchment can be made through trade skills or bought on the AH. And make sure you select the runes and view the cutscene first, otherwise it will not let you trade.

Also.. some just further clarification. You cannot take the boat from Mhaura to Selbina and expect to just run up and do the second rune. You have to back to Jeuno and speak with Mertaire, do the cutscene there, and then to Valkurm. Only one parchment is needed, to trade with the first set of runes. Second set is just another cutscene and then completion.

For those wondering where the parchment is in the AH it is in:

Materials -> Alchemy

Parchment is now in Materials -> Leathercraft. Guess they changed it in 12/15 patch.

Okay everyone, here's how the quest REALLY works:

Talk to the NPCs in the tavern in Lower Jeuno. Mertaire will whine about his lost woman and another patron at the tavern will mention the song runes at Buburimu. Buy a Parchment from the Jeuno AH (~1000 gil) and get on a chocobo, direction Buburimu. This parchment is NOT sold by Pikini-Mikini in Mhuara like the FAQs all say; buy it in Jeuno.

Go to the song runes in Buburimu; find a secret path at the West edge of the beach. Click the song runes to get a cutscene, then trade your parchment to the runes to receieve a "Poetic Scroll" or something like that. Take this back to Mertaire in Jeuno for 2100 gil.

Talk to everyone in the tavern again--this time she'll mention the Valkurm song runes. No need for a Parchment for this half; get on your bird and head to the Northwesternmost part of Valkurm and follow the secret tunnel. Click on the 2nd Song Runes and you'll get another cutscene, 3000 gil and the ability to become a Bard.

Great walkthrough! These sites REALLY need to get the "buy parchment in Mhaura" part updated. Anyway, just finished this quest tonight, pretty straightforward but you have to chocobo around a lot - and if you don't have warp/teleport, you have to run around a good bit too, becuase you can't activate the song runes while you're riding.

The only clarifications I'll add are the locations of the tunnels. In Buburimu, you have to go down onto the "Khoonta Dunes". On the map (if you're not in-game, there are some on this website), you can see the ramp down to Khoonta Dunes is on the border between H-8 and H-9. The secret tunnel is on the waterline on the border of G-9 and G-10... you can see where that land mass hangs south and splits the beach into a west and east section. The song runes are in the NW corner of that west beach.

In Valkurm, "northwesthernmost part" is self-apparent, but just note the entrance is at C-6.

Finally, a lot of people mentioned doing this quest for the money... 5.1k gil total. That's a good chunk but realize that if you don't have warp you're going to need to rent four chocobos: two from Jeuno (heading out to Bubumiru and Valkurm), one from Tahrongi (returning from Bubumiru), and one from Konschtat or La Theine (returining from Valkurm), and do a lot of running after you dismount to activate the song runes anyway, PLUS buy a parchment (1.5k on my server). All told I spent ~3k, so I only wound up getting 2k gil net. Of course that's better than nothing, but I don't think it's worth the time spent if you're doing it just for the money.

BTW, one more thing: To save some time I started the ranger quest and dragoon quest and did them (well at least started them) concurrently. You could do this for any adv job quest that starts in Windhurst, and Bastok or San d'Oria, because you can go from Buburimu to Tahrongi and ride to Windhurst, then change jobs / suicide back to Jeuno. Same for after Valkurm, you can go to La Theine and ride to San d'Oria, or Konschtat and ride to Bastok and save some time.
This needs updating...

This should be redone, You need parchment which is a lv 31 leathercraft item and costs quite a bit in the AH. So far, I've found no NPCs that sell it and it can only been crafted, but prove me wrong guys!

I've listened to Mertaire's sob story and spoken to the bartender about the Buburimu Peninsula. However, I don't see a new quest in my list. Should I head directly to the Peninsula to find the rune anyway?

Note that by default the quests shown will only be the ones from your hometown. For example, I'm from Bastok, so when I bring up my Quests window it'll only show my Bastok quests. Quests I have from other cities won't be shown in that window. You need to press left or right to switch to quests from other cities and regions.
