At first I wan't too hot on this ability, but I waited until I got my counter buffs up to +11 and started using it.

It wasn't until after getting aggro by a tough crawler after I had been soloing a tough Exoray that I really appreciated it. With less than half my hp left, counterstance allowed me to nearly kill it. It still killed me, yes, but it only had a sliver of hp left in the end.

And bear in mind that countering is uneffected by paralysis and blinding. Counterstance can keep you in the game even if you can't hit on your normal turn.

It's not good against everything since it can't counter ranged attacks, but against most mobs, its a life-saver.

I realy want this to be a good /ja because its a great idea but its not worth it in a party. If you want to farm easies, its great. You got a PL, its realy great. In a party this is useless. Think about it: Even with the best counter gear, how many times are you going to want to take the hate from the tank? Almost none! WHM's get angry because we are already MP spounges and this really doesn't help at all. Don't get me wrong, I love MNK and I love counter but this /ja was poorly made. Not saying that this is how it should be but if i were to remake this /ja I would make it a 10 recast, lasts for 2 minutes, and raises your counter rate by 40-50% and even then this would still only be sorta good for partys. I hope SE trys to fix this even if its just a little.

this ability is far from worthless.

counter+ gear.
near cap guarding skill

= @#%^ing pwn

my friend was power leveling me around 50ish. i was countering a LOT increasing my damage output. mnk/war with berserk puts defence at about 108. with counterstance puts it at about 27. however the sheer damage dealt is outstanding

Has anyone thought about a certin day of the week (in game) making counterstance better or worse?

Seemed to never counter on Lightningsday, counterstance on and +13 counter. 1 of 10 more or less i countered...

raises chance of countering while greatly reducing your defence

total def loss =
-all def, then giving you defense equal to the defense gained from VIT stat

(2 VIT = 1 DEF)

thought i'd clear that up

edit: funfact: lowest defense obtainable through JA's
lvl 45 taru monk counterstance followed by berserk

ive tested this, if you follow with berserk it subtracts from the already low def of counterstance

AS a level 62 mnk atm i been using croos counter h2h plus some other counter + gear and i been soling em and t with hundreth fist along and i love it yes it hurt when i get thi but if you only get hit 10 times out of the 200 punches you do umm i think is worth it

after i got this and out pt disbanded just before i could get my level, i got a whm friend of mine to pl me the 800 exp i needed. against DC workers in Crawlers Nest, i only got hit 3-4 times per kill, and only at about double damage(80-90 per hit).

Note: this ability lasts 5 Minutes and has a 5 min recharge. similar to the war's Defender.

I am not sure but I think when I use counterstance it raises my evasion by a lot because I don't get hit as much as if I didn't use counterstance. But the only down side to it is when I do get hit, oh man, it hurts. I thinks this is a cool ability. I just have to get those expensive CrossCounters and Emperor's hairpin plus anything other +agi +eva stuff so it would be better.

If you think this is a bad wep ability, it's not, see, if your farming like some monster that'd kick your ass at 45, lets take, our friend who drops the jujistu gi for an example! (yay 100 fists gonna kick my arse) well, he uses hundred fists, and you put this abi up, sure if he hits you he does some damage... but your gonna counter him till he falls down dead! Avenger's Earrings + Cross Counters + This = DEATH TO ANY NM THAT WANTS TO OWN YOU

Actually - just to give an idea - wearing counter + earrings and cross counters he farms with this and more or less takes no hits... Just runs through mobs. So I wouldn't call it worthless ^^

You have to take a hit to counter, so I'm not sure how taking no hits makes this counterstance ability useful. If you countered when evadinng then you might have a point, but MNK's can counter even without counterstance and do it without losing all their def not from VIT.

Being that you are a complete retard and nobody has cleared this up yet, I feel the need to step in.

When MNKs counter attacks (or any MNK-type mob for that matter), they avoid the hit completely, and "counter" with another single attack. Please at least level your MNK to 10 and try out the ability for yourself before you make claims about it.

The reason it drops you 95% is exactly so that you can get hit every time.. If you dodge/evade guess what chance of counter you have.. 0% :P

Anyway - if I'm not mistaken guard fires if a counter fails. So having maxxed guard/counter (cross counters, the LV42 earrings) etc... Might make it worthwhile...

Last I checked it was called "Counterstance" though ;)

Anxious for a friend of mine to be able to wear guarding torque/max guarding so we can see if this makes it worth a hoot :P

kinda worthless. If it didn't drop your defense down 95% then it would be an ok thing. But then it might make monks too good. I think they should change this so that its like 10 min refresh time and 30 seconds of 100% counter attack.

I agree its useless, but no way they should make it 100% perfect counter for 30 seconds. That would be like having another 2 hour, except you can use it every 10 minutes. :P

They should only take 50% from your defense, then it would be good I think.

i finally got this and tried it out.

against weaks, i couldn't tell if it worked because the mob couldn't hit me.

against easy prey, it seemed to fire a lot. i countered an easy prey Antican 4 times in a row. the dmg taken was about 3-4 times more than normal.

against an IT fly, i was able to counter a few times and the dmg taken wasn't overly huge. i used it at the beginning of fights when i voked initially while a THF set up trick onto the tank.

Yeah, i agree it sux compared to other high level abilities, but then again Monks make up for this in their Weapon abilities. (raging fists etc.).

I countered an incredibly tough mob 9 times while I got hate about the last half of it's health. Countering in i.t. mob is quite a feat. It works rather well. Plus I evaded it too, so it didn't do too much damage compared to the damage I did to it.

I was fighting a Hornfly in Crawlers Nest btw.

I agree, this ability seems kinda useless. I take way to much damage and don't counter enough for this to be worth wild. Perhaps with some counter+ equipment this could work? Any highlevel monks find this useful?

Yea, monks take buko dmg. It really sucks that they didn't invent some kind of class that could CURE you when you take such hits... they could call it a Grey Mage or some such nonsense. I agree, why do more damage with a damage dealer? Make's no sense to me...
