Stacking DoT's

If you watch the log messages, you'll notice that Dia and Bio can be stacked on certain mobs if Bio is cast first. In this case, you will eventually get messages that both affects have worn off. If, however, you cast Dia, then Bio, you will only get a message about the Bio affect, showing that you canceled Dia with Bio. This does not work on the majority of mobs. It seems that they must have at least a partial darkness tolerance for both to stack.

According to the Spring 2004 Strategy Guide, the Prime Element table on page 30, shows the "Rock, Paper, Scissors" effect of the elements in Final Fantasy.

I think this chart clears up the whole "Damage Over Time" (DoT) spell controversy.
Also my experience in watching the Battle Spam in parties seems to show the same flow of elements.

These Spells are as follows;
DIA (DEF down effect)
BIO (ATK down effect)
BURN (INT down effect)
FROST (AGI down effect)
CHOKE (VIT down effect)
RASP (DEX down effect)
SHOCK (MND down effect)
DROWN (STR down eefect)

Charts reads as follows;

Light Cancels Dark
Dark Cancels Light

Fire Cancels Ice
Ice Cancels Wind
Wind Cancels Earth
Earth Cancels Thunder
Thunder Cancels Water
Water Cancels Fire

so if we replace the Element in the chart with a DoT spell;

DIA Cancels BIO
BIO Cancels DIA

BURN Cancels FROST
FROST Cancels CHOKE
CHOKE Cancels RASP
RASP Cancels SHOCK
SHOCK Cancels DROWN
DROWN Cancels BURN

According to the chart the only 2 spells that can cancel each other are DIA (Light) & BIO (Dark)
All others follow the "Rock, Paper, Scissors" Rule (Frost Cannot cancel Burn, Choke Cannot cancel Frost, etc.) (although some believe Dia & Bio are based on which ever spell is the higher level stronger one cancels the other & there is validity to that claim)

So I hope this helps clear up some things. Please don't rebutt this post with more hearsay & unconfirmed theories. I got this all out of the game rules, if you think its wrong or not entirely correct, test it for yourself. All I know is that when a fellow BLM casts BURN, my FROST "Has no effect" which according to chart, follows the game's logic.

Happy Nuking.

The parent post is wrong on the effect of dia and bio.

In short:

Bio II > Dia II > Bio > Dia

See my post on the Bio II page for details.

Hmm, does this get rid of Blink and a Ninja's shadow as well, like Diaga?

Bio and Dia DO NOT STACK. Bio overwrites Dia. However, Dia II overwrites Bio, and Bio II will overwrite Dia II.

Exactly. These spells do not stack. I tested it with two goblins casting both spells on me. Here's the link to my post on the subject :

TESTED : Dia & Bio effects

Dia and Bioi do stack

This s a miscnception from the very early stages of the game before nefeebling skill was introduced dia was cxnsider a devine skill and it was in conflict with bio bcause bio being darkness would cancel it out. Near the end of the beta enfeeble skill was introduced and they now stack

No they don't. They never stack, and they still don't stack. Please stop spreading misinformation.
add them up...

Don't forget, later, if you cast Poison, Bio and Dia, they are taking little damage but doing so consecutively, which adds a big punch to your melee attacks.

It may do a small amount of damage overtime, but it adds up in the end. Every little bit helps sometimes, but the melee debuff seals it's usefulness.

Most people don't seem to use this because it does a nearly useless amount of damage.. but remember, DIA IS A MELEE DEBUFF. The useless damage is only a secondary effect..

If your with melees.. this spell is pretty much the most effective damage to mana ratio in the game.
