I've noticed that this ability no longer changes your defense after use. I think it just adds a superb "Physical Damage Taken -xx%". I was fighting ants today at Western Altepa (PLD60 Full AF). If my judgment is correct, the ants were hitting me for 45~ damage-- after I used Sentinel they only hit for 10~ damage.

Please post your observations of this ability. The more evidence there is the more facts we can conclude about this ability, which will allow paladins to more effectively use it.

Yah. Using this ability and then looking at defence bonus, it does not increase at all.
You can clearly notice a huge enmity bonus, and damage reduction is huge. I dont have any exact #'s of formulas, but at lvl 59 I was taking about 50-75 damage a hit with 525 defence and no sentinel. When I put on Sentinel, the same mob hit from between 5-25.
It's possible the damage reduction gradually decreases from when you use it, and when it wears off. It seems as soon as you use it, the damage is lower and near the end, it is a bit higher. May just be a coincidence.

With Defender, Rampart, Sentinal and Minne...no food I had my Def at 900 at 75. Not exactly 900 it was like 898 or something.

sentinel rules defender. sentinel has a massive enmity boost and coupled with flash and voke is an incredible hate gainer.

in my opinion , sentinel is NOT for defence but for hate. that is why you dont spam it on weaker mobs (VT etc.) but save it for those IT's where you'll be taking so much damage that the whm generates alot of hate. for those 30 seconds in which it lasts, its a massive boost. using a high damage skilchain after using voke, flash and sentinel is extremely effective. throw in a shield bash if you lose hate and bobs your uncle.
besides, cover generates alot of hate and thats what its there for.

and from what ive seen, defender helps a very small amount. this is what i noticed in valley of sorrows last night-
raptor damage without defender- 68-93 crit. 111-136
raptor damage with defender- 58-87 crit. 107-130

as you can see damage is lower but not significantly. this will help your whm slightly but it wont help you when you refeer to the damage done by you-

without defender- 30-48
with defender- 0-12

also, when using defender my accuracy went to around 60% of what it was, not sure why.

now not only is this damage difference noticeable it shone through on weapon skills.

vorpal blade without defender- 121-281
vorpal blade with defender- 23-78

a damage difference of 203 on a skillchain (i was tacked on at the end, not in the main skillchain) and thats a possible 50 points of element damage and a poor burst. with a +enmity bonus, every action you take generates hate and that includes hitting.
if you dont hit and youre doing poor damage, youre relying on the curing alone. and a WHM does more curing than you so go figure. you need to be making some contact at least to keep hate levels boosted. if you dont believe me, on the Sylph server ask Kedo, an offensive paladin who's the best tank ive ever met.

so although defender has some pluses, it has some big bad points. i only recommend it for mobs that you cant hit at all (talking about 1 in 20 hit rate) and are way above you and hitting you **** hard. other than that, i dont think that defence boost is that worth it.

Vorpal Blade went down with Defender because of its Attack Down effect, not because you had sentinel up

Im a new Paladin/Warrior level 41/20, and I have tried to use "cover" to protect both others & myself-with no luck at all. I know it's something simple I'm doing-can someont please tell me how to activate "cover". Thank you, WeldingRDT

To activate cover you have to be standing between the target and the person that you are trying to cover. All hate will be transfered to you but that person must stay behind you. It only lasts about 10 seconds or so but that is usually enough time to reset your provoke timer and get a provoke off or a Cure IV to grab hate back, or even a decent damage spirits within.

In order for cover to work, you need to be standing between the mob and the person who is being attacked. it should look like this from above;


<DRK>> <PLD>> <<MOB>

unless your standing between the mob and the person being atacked, cover will do nothing. Hope this clears it up.

o.O Not sure about Rampart, but Holy Circle, Cover, Sentinel, and Shield Bash have a 5 minute recast time, not 10.

Holy Circle, Sentinel, and Cover only lasts for 30 seconds, not 3 minutes...I -wish- it was 3 minutes.

oh and as far as the reuse time, im pretty sure tahts a typo..if the reuse time was that much, sentinel would pretty much be useless. i use sentinel once a fight, or at least once every other fight. if they upped that, id use it ever 5th fight or so-almost making pld worthless other than being a pin cushion. so hopefully they dont change anything about it except maybe the duration of it

defender and sentinel are stackable, however, the hate grabbing is not as you think it is. it will add a tiny bit but not really enough to make a difference. at lvl 60, the 2 combined will push you over 400 def.

reuse time is 5 mins. not 10
after reading it here i logged in and tried. no changes

also the shiel bash reuse time hasnt changed either. dont know where they got the idea...

Why was the reuse time changed to 10 minutes here? Did they change it in the game? Please say they didnt, waiting 5 minutes for a mere 30 seconds of def boost is long enough. If anything they need to make the duration longer.

Sentinel will grab some hate and it does stack with Defender. Combined the two can push a PLDs defense well over 300. Add in a Boiled Crab and Defense can push well over 350. Any Paladin over 50 will gladly tell you that it makes their WHMs very happy when they're only being hit for 30-50 damage when normally its 60-80...now if I can only make 50...lol

and at level 50, pld/wars get defender. like a god of defense.

oh yeah, why is sentinel worse then defender? you can always have defender on if you want.... but wars can't hold aggro like paladins while their def is raised

..oh wait, does this lower your attack? guess it doesn't. That's why sentinel's timing isn't as good as defender, which does lower you attack ( and prevents you from getting any aggro at all while it is on).

denfender keeps you from loosing hate when ur hit, it will decrease how much u get from regular melee which is alreaady crap as a pld

My impression is that in addition to increasing your defense it generates some hate as well, though since I also just got it I haven't had a chance to try that myself.

I just got this, and my defense was 189 before, and 217 after. Now, this is a nice boost, but only lasting 30 seconds, it really limits its use.

I'd much prefer Defender over sentinel.
