i dont know how much this helps. but i just hit 50 and now my defence is overkill. on some things i wear str gear or will put berserk up for a minute so i take enough damage to cure myself
(btw taru PLD so my hate control is based on curing myself)

When I was subbing War for PLD I noticed that when I hit lvl 20, my defense went up by 11 +2 vit and all from lvl. So I guess it does stack with the same level, so I am assuming it stacks as well. I will check when I hit lvl 50.

First of all, I'm not sure why you commented on Def. Bonus III when your comment apparently refers to Def. Bonus I. In any case, it has been noted many times that these types of abilities (Bonuses) do not stack with the same abilities from your subjob (i.e. Def. Bonus I from PLD main will not stack with Def. Bonus I from WAR sub). My guess is that you had Protect cast on you sometime between when you first and last checked your defense. That would explain 10 of the 11 defense increase. The other 1 defense came from the +2 VIT you gained when you leveled as every +2 VIT adds 1 defense, just like every +2 STR adds 1 attack.
I do realize the previous comment is rather old, but as it's obviously incorrect and near the top of the page, I'd like to clear this up before there's any more confusion.

I leveled my pld to 40, but i was kind of confused about the defence bonuses. If it stacks or not, or if the highest one is active and the last one you had goes away, it could be thought of from both sides:
Def bonus I @lvl 10 adds 10 def
Def bonus II @ lvl 30 adds 10 def
This would be if it stacks
or...
Def bonus I @lvl 10 activates adds 10 def
Def bonus II @ lvl 30 activates, adds 20 def, and def bonus I is deactivated.
Either way, once you get to 70 and have all the def bonuses, it should give you 40 more defence from having those traits, -IF- these are the rules taht pld defence bonus abides by.
However, if the defbonus is by a percentage, i have no clue. Any low lvl pld (before 10) you can probally figure this out, when your about to lvl, finish the battle with just your sword equiped, no shield, no armor. If say you have 20 def with nothing on, and you have 30 def with out armor at lvl 10, then it probally is a set number increase at each lvl.
If it is a percentage, i dont know how this would progress as you get each def bonus.
(many of you already know this, but your def bonus taht you got at lvl 10, will not stack when you reach 20 pld.)
Edit: the about message is meant to say that the Warrior def bonus taht you got at lvl 10 will not stack with the lvl 10 bonus you got with paladin.

I'm not sure if this stacks or not, but I figured that each one adds an amount of def... I think it is a base defese and not percentage... but not sure on that. as for clear mind comparison i figured it was the same. example being clear mind 1 = 2 more mp and clear mind 2 = 2 mp. so both equal 4. if not then clear mind 2 would be 4mp... and so i would figure defense bonus acts in the same manner

I think this is just like Clear Mind. The highest level is the one thats active. So If your high enough level to have Defense Bonus III thats the one that will be active. Atleast thats my logic, I am probably wrong.
How much does this help? I've heard the pld and war phy def up's do not stack is this true? Does this help by a +amount or +percent? And if so how much. Will this make my def stellar or just a bit higher than war?
