Ice Spikes

Just fought Phantom today for this item and casted Banishga II and Banish II and it killed him. Easy to get and I am now 1/1 on drop.
Useful.

This is very useful when you're farming swarms that deal just enough damage to kill you when there's too many of them. mass paralyze = good.

Worthless
# Feb 12 2005 at 8:13 PM Rating: Default
This spell is absolutely worthless >< The only good thing about it is the price tag. I've found that despite all my attempts to make the spikes deal more damage, they still deal 7-8 to tiny mandragoras in E. Sarutabaruta. Blaze Spikes, however, deals 14-18. And that's with 110 Enhancing.
RE: Worthless
# Feb 08 2006 at 12:23 PM Rating: Decent
Blaze Spikes do more to Tiny Mandragoras than Ice Spikes because they have a weakness to fire.
Though I don't know if they do more damage in general try fighing something that is neither strong nor weak to either ice or fire.

how much damage the spikes do is also determined by your enchancing magic level.

to buy or to kill
# Oct 06 2004 at 11:51 AM Rating: Default
I've personally gone on the ship and tried to kill the mob that gives that and I died (lvl 27 blm/13 whm). I did however finally get the spell and was happy to finally use it. However, there is a catch to this:

It does (on average) 4 pts of damage. I've never seen it go higher. The lower spell, blaze spikes, does 8 damage. I've tried this out on many different mobs and it's always been the same. Needless to say, I wish I wouldn't have spent that time and exp trying to get the spell.

My best advice on this spell is if you get it from someone or you kill the mob while bored, etc. GREAT! the graphics are awesome. However, do not go out and spend ~20-40k (that's what it goes for in Sandy on my server the last I looked) for it. A waste of gil when you could get something better (Blaze Spikes) in a Quest.

You're forgetting the other effect of the spikes -- enemies that hit you will also randomly get the Paralyze ailment applied to them.
Ermites v.s. Emnity
# Sep 21 2004 at 9:24 AM Rating: Decent
Blacksirtaru:
"(within reason, no Ermites +1)" They are rings normally Intelligence +2, ofcourse +1 would make them INT +3, They are not the same thing as Emnity thats a different word. ^^

p.s. The problem with spells that do damage to the mob when you are attacked is that you shouldn't use them in groups. If a mob is on you, you want it off, not to **** it off more by it taking damage. Good spell for farming, or soloing.

This is extremely annoying, I would go out and buy it but to be honest if I can kill one monster for it I'd rather do that than spend 25k on something. No one helps you, and there are 40+ RDM's who already know the spell who just constantly steal it. Any advice on what to do?
Just got it

Well, I just got this while I level my other jobs, as my highest is BLM at 20. Yay, I have all my spells. I feel that to make the best name I can for myself as a BLM I need all the best gear for my level (within reason, no Ermites +1), as well as every spell as soon as I can get it.

He meant Eremite's Ring +1, which gives Int +3, and goes for about 150k on Asura.

The additional few damage points from Blaze Spikes gets less and less useful as you go along. Ice Spikes, however, randomly paralyzes the enemy (which is never a bad thing) and Shock Spikes has a pretty high chance of stunning the enemy, which is always a good thing. I can understand using Blaze Spikes at lower levels but these two are really better later on.

All of the damage sheild spells (frost/blaze/etc... spike) are very good for farming.

Usually i cast one of the spike spells and aquaveil on myself. Train a bunch of mobs with dia/poison, have them run around whacking you, taking damage themselves. When u have enough- use your -ega spells.

Works for me...

Can anyone tell us what the damage from these spikes is? a formula would be nice, or a comparison of how much damage compared to blaze spikes and whatever your enhance skill is at.

Is it worth it for a 40+ RDM? How often is the paralyze? does it pretty much keep the mob paralyzed the whole time your fighting it?

Hmmmm i can't speak from an offensive point of view, but I can tell ya what a pain in the butt killing skeles is when they have this up. They're ~EP to me @ 62 in eldieme necropolis, I kill them there to help friends with LB1. I get paralyzed about 3 times per battle. It sucks. These and shock spikes (I get stunned occasionally by those while farming thunder eles) would be very very nice for solo play.
#Anonymous, Posted: Feb 26 2004 at 12:10 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) i was kind of disappointed about this spell. I bought it for 20k when i was level 20 and had to save a long time to get the scroll. Then i realized that blaze spikes is 2x better because it makes 2x more damage back to mojsters. Unless there is somekind of def bonus or protect against elemental damage.

Why BLMs get this spell at 20 baffles me, really. They don't need it. The Ice damage when you get hit is nice, but it's negligible and BLMs shouldn't really be taking hits unless they're solo. Even then, a soloing mage is going to conserve their mana for chaincasting spells like thunder/blizzard/fire and debuffs on the mob.

Soloing RDMs prefer this spell because it can save them a Paralyze cast, and just pricks away at the mob they're fighting with their enthundered/enblizzard/enfired melee attacks.

That said, never buy this spell. It's not worth the money unless your're a 40RDM, at which point you can easily solo the Phantom and get lucky with the drops.

It is not a 'must buy' spell like Dispel or Refresh. Save your money.

It has a chance of paralyzing the mob when they hit you.

Phantom Hunting
# Jan 31 2004 at 5:26 AM Rating: Excellent
I hunted the phantoms for 2 days (earth days) and here is what I found:
They spawn in the undead time (which I believe is 20:00 or 22:00 on through 4:00)
They are a random spawn on the deck, along with the typical pugils and crabs, so kill those off if you see any to make room for the possibility of a phantom spawning.
With my 35BLM/15THF, I was able to solo these no problem. You could probably safely solo one at 30, but that's a guess. Even with the Treasure Hunter trait, I killed 10-12 phantoms without a single drop.... excepting revival roots and a square of cotton cloth. (what the?)

Basically, hunt them if you want to raise your fishing skill in the downtime and kill the occasional pirate for a sand charm(though they are harder than phantoms, and come in big groups)- otherwise you will waste a whooooole lot of time on this endeavor and it will leave you very bitter.

PS. they can spawn immediately on deck, and almost half the time the ship leaves port during those few hours, you'll find one waiting on deck for you, so RUN! hahaha Stupid warriors always provoking them... what do they need it for??? arg!!
Where it's from

How sure is it that these phantoms appear? I have taken the boat many times (not sure at what time though) and have only seen these mobs once when i was to weak to fight them :(
Dual casting

Can you cast this spell and Blaze spikes on your self at the same time so when stuff hits you it takes damage from Ice and Fire?

no stacking... sorry

Paralyze
# Dec 12 2003 at 7:47 PM Rating: Default
suposed to also cause paralyze, not that it helps much.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 23 2004 at 5:01 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) No, that would be Schock Spikes
RE: Paralyze
# Apr 06 2004 at 12:35 AM Rating: Default
No, that would be Ice Spikes. Shock Spikesor "Schock" Spikes randomly stuns the enemy for a very short time.
