Excellent comments! That thing about how boss mobs would debuff your buffs in order is why Shrunken Goblin Skull Earring that dropped in WW was so in-demand. The buff it provided was minor but being insta-click made it invaluable for raiders. I remember there were raiding guilds which made owning this, or something similar (and there weren't many) a requirement to join. A friend of mine camped the goblin fort for 3 days before he got his drop because he couldn't join one of the premiere raiding guilds until he had it.

... that you can view the Stick Figure models any time?

That's right, it doesn't even have to April Fool's 2009 (I think it was 2009, lol).

Anyway, all you gotta do is paste this line into your eqclient.ini file as the top line, directly underneath where it says [Defaults]:

Quote:
StickFigures=1

So when you open your ini file it should look like this at the top:

Quote:
[Defaults]
StickFigures=1

It makes any PC race a stick figure and this reduces the amount of video lag your computer produces. So for some, it can greatly improve performance.

To go back to normal models, replace the "1" with a "0" (zero). (Remember to save the changes to the file)

Yther - I was thinking of the one time Dragon in Lake of Ill Omen.

Yes, it was one of the little salamander type dragons and it slaughtered scores of people. Difficult to see from a distance and by the time one was able to catch sight of it... LOADING. If memory serves, the FM zone line to loio was the makeshift res and raid rally point. I dragged quite a few corpses from the shore where the dragon was camped to the res-medics at the zone line. Brell server.

Dance of the Fireflies can still only be cast at night. As I'm standing here looking at VS remains and unable to trigger the fight because it's daytime.

Did you know druids get a spell that can turn off the rain in an entire zone? I don't know of any other spell which can impact every single player in a zone. Wake of Karana is the spell an it consumes and opal when cast. Won't shut off snow, alas, so not much use in Velious. ;)

And rain the rain start/stop feature in the game is random. I stopped the rain many times just for it to start right back up again within seconds of me casting the spell.

Plane of Mischief used to be an awesomely fun zone. It was hard to get to, and had some really fun mobs/quests! I had so much fun there, and was very disappointed when they revamped it.

Agreed about Mischief. Is there ONE player who was ever happy about THIS change? The challenge was getting TO the zone but that was FUN. There's really nothing comparable in EQ anymore. I knew players who would BIND in PoMischief and retain their bind there FOREVER just to avoid having to make that awesomely terrifying run through NToV another time! The only thing close was the Plane of Fear "break", trying to get to the North wall alive and then camp out to clear any persistent aggro.

I'm still fascinated by the mystery of how/when Bilge Farfathom spawns in Dagnor's Cauldron. There's a post in his article here which purports to provide very specific info about placeholders and spawn timers but I'm not so sure that info is really solid. I've been after Bilge in various incarnations of druids in "live" and emu EQ and the mob's pattern of spawnage always strikes me as completely unpredictable. And the excitement a solo druid experiences when Bilge shows up on track! Ironically I've had him spawn when I was low in HPs or out of mana and he was anywhere from blue to red to me and then it's a real tough decision whether to tackle him immediately or hope to be able to wait long enough to heal and med up. Made all the more challenging when you know that other druids, rangers and bards might be tracking him at the same time.

Never forgot one time years ago I got him to spawn almost back-to-back and he had Pearl Kedge Totems both times. I was lucky enough to be able to run an alt down in time to loot the second one before it rotted or got "ninja-looted." The darn thing was worth far more than its weight in Platinum Pieces in those days! He displays the Totem when he has it so during the second fight I was struggling to log in the alt, an enchanter, and get her heading to DC with one hand while fighting Bilge with the other!

When I first started playing, my far clip plane was somehow set to 5%. I didn't know anything about what the far clip plane setting did, I ended up playing like that for about an entire year! I lost my corpse going through the zone just before the zone where druids hunted for their Elysian gear one time. You think corpse runs were bad, try doing them with seriously short visibility! Give it a try for kicks, set your FCP at 5% and play for a bit, that's what I dealt with for a full year thinking that was normal! When someone finally figured out that I could barely see in the distance and told me what setting to change, it was like a whole new game! But man did I feel stupid! =P

One other serious newb moment I had back then was when I decided to transfer some gear to an alt by dropping it on the ground and logging back in with the alt. I got back online just in time to see one of those rats in Qeynos eat my gear, had no idea that rats could pick up my stuff. ><

When I first started playing I had my gamma set rather dark and, of course, had no idea how to change it, nor that you even could. So once my dorf warrior reached about level 6, I wanted to journey out to the Butcherblock CROSSROADS, a legendary place I had heard about with unequalled hunting. Well, I got misdirected and lost on my trip, night fell and I found myself "trapped" on the side of a hill, pitch blackness all around. Rather than risk falling to my death or getting lost even worse I spent "the night" on the hillside, hearing strange noises and waiting a seemingly endless length of time for the sun to rise.

I never heard about rats eating gear. But I did know one enchanter who used to earn plat by wandering the zones offering her jewelry for sale in /shout. Evidently some low-life discovered that she would go to obscure parts of zones, drop some items she wanted to swap to/from alts, then log out and log back in on an alt. This could take a while with slow Internet so there would be an appreciable time where valuable items would be laying unattended on the ground. Evidently this low-life waited till the enchanter logged out and then stole everything left unattended. Must have been some nice items cuz the enchanter got so upset she quit the game. Never saw her again.

I used to do the quick drop - log out - log in - pickup for what seemed like years. Beings as I played mornings, I had little competition, and never had a drop KSed. What i do miss though was dropping coin (for a variety of reasons) and planting weapons on NPC's. I used to totally deck out the orcs in EC for the group valiant enough to take them down. Totally unexpected loots from afar. Good times.

I remember a botton you could press that would send you to test server as a monster. You could not talk to anyone and it was random what you were. I remember being an orc in crushbone. The players there could tell i was not a normal mob by the way i moved i guess.

Wow now that's really cool and I never heard that before. Anyone else remember this? That would be a fun role to play. I wonder if you could spawn as Emperor Crushbone or D'Vinn and really give players a shock!

I remember when you could have Guild Wars, the 2 leaders would have to agree and it was game on PVP, My guild at the time was in 2 before they took it out . I had a blast running with a pack looking for kills. Even you were the target it was still fun

No idea why they took that feature out. It provided a means for competing guilds to thrash out a problem without GMs getting involved.

Bracer of the Hidden was another one.

The people who whined and got it changed were probably happy. Or, more likely, once it was changed, they just didn't go (some people just don't like to see other people have access to stuff they can't get). I remember in the middle of NToV raids, half the raid force clicking on the castle and going to PoM before we had cleared the zone ("I'm just going to bind!").

Project M

That was the "event" that preceded (and helped justify) the Discord server. Because it wasn't like EQ's PvP was critically acclaimed (that was DAoC's schtick back then). If I remember right, you actually got xp for killing n00bs as a mob. You only spawned as newbie mobs though, from what I recall. Like skellies in LOIO/FoB and such.

Did you know that early in EQ's life, it was riddled with "perches"? These were spots in various zones where you could attack and kill mobs but they couldn't fight back or get to you. There was one in (old) Freeport on the crosswalk across the entrance to West FP. If you stood on the little catwalk above the entry arch, you could attack guards and they'd run back and forth until they died. I remember watching wizards nuking guards down, untouched. There was one inside the stone bridge in North Karana too. Many people used it to kill Watchman Dexlin. Since he was on a different faction from the guards (and from what I was told, occasionally dropped the boots he gave the quest for), they wouldn't assist him.

Here's something some might not know, regarding progress. In the years since defiant armor was introduced, there are mobs that are no longer nearly as frightening as they once were, even at their intended level. One that comes to mind is Queen Velazul Di'Zok. As a warrior in one of the few guilds at the time who could do Chardok Royals successfully (consistently), I remember her AE (Flamesong of Ro) essentially requiring a zerg strat. Back then, getting well over 200 in any resist was somewhat rare and since that AE essentially subtracts 100 from your FR before the resist check is done, it was brutal. Also remember, at that time, the best tanks in the game buffed to about 7k hp (and I was not even close to being among the best tanks in the game. I was only level 54!!!). I died for my Ancient Blade (and quickly!). Nowadays, she's a pushover because her AE barely hits people in today's gear, even at her level. Another example is Trakanon. I remember much of the (non-tanks in) guild farming the Tower of Frozen Shadow for Gnomeskin armor just to have a chance against his Poison Breath. I did Trak a few days ago on my 65 wizard and saw a lot of 'You resist the Poison Breath spell!' and she's in defiant with some period pieces (Grieg range, XTC shield, etc).

The Discord server you mention is a great "do you remember" item. I wish they would do this again. It was a special new server with a limited life. It was PvP and when you died, that was it, your toon was permanently dead, or maybe you could start over with the same name but you'd be level 1 and I think with no gear. The goal was to be the highest-level toon when the server closed, and there was some kind of nice prize which could be transferred to your main on a regular server. The cap then was 50 or 60 and IIRC the highest surviving toon was a 30-ish cleric. I think there was one player above him who got ganked a day or two before the end.

I do believe you had to log in so many hours per day so you couldn't jump level up and then camp your toon till the deadline.

Anyone got a link to a copy of the original ruleset, though? Most of the above is conjecture or guesswork on my part.

That would be a BLAST to do again and since they did it once surely they could repeat?

Wow Sippin, your memory is on point.

The highest level person was a cleric who got into the mid 40s but was killed the day before the contest ended. The eventual winner was a level 37 cleric.

That offline chat was extremely useful. I remember getting buffed up for Vox / Naggy raids, then having to log out while the rest of the raid got buffed. THen, the RL would signal us all in the offline chat to log back in and go to town. Buffs were sooooooo short lived.

Rangers could heal themselves using "Skin like XXXX" due to the added HP. So each cast was worth the amount of HP the spell added to your total. Ghetto heals

Enchanters could charm the Priest of Discord and use him to kill guards in Faydark (probably in other areas but only saw it in Fay)

There once was a program that ran in Linux that would display a map of the zone you were in complete with all the MOBs, NPCs. Characters and their level in relation to yours (green, blue, white.. etc)

There used to be a trick where you could steal something from a vendor by clicking on it and backing away until the vendor window closed. Then the item would appear on your cursor (can't remember if you had to be inspecting it or what)

Swimming could be raised by swimming into a corner. With your head above water you could swim there for hours (while you slept) and raise swimming to max quickly.

High level toons could be sold on Ebay for serious money.
