Hello all. I was looking at this final fantasy game and it looks really nice, currently im play Everquest but am completly fed up with time lag. A few questions so please bear with me. Is this game more fun then EQ and do you have to pay a monthly fee thing? and is there "lag" on FF?
If i do switch to FF im defintaly gonna be a kitty person! ^_^
thanks in advance

It's always tough to describe one game as more or less "fun" than another, due to different people liking different things. Also, FFXI currently has the new-game appeal, in that people haven't had a chance to get used to (and possibly bored with) it yet.

That said, I find it to be a nice/enjoyable new toy (having been an EQ person for almost 4 years now). So far I've found the lag better than I do on EQ, but still there on occasion. The worst part of the game is the HUGE patch when you install it (would have taken me weeks on my dial-up, still took several hours when I toted the computer over to a friend's house to use his high-speed line).

It does have a monthly fee, which goes up the more characters you have.

I have zero lag. I would bet the lag would be based on your downloading speed. It only took me a hour to run the patch.

I am currently running on my DSL line, but my friend Kahlyn generally runs on dial up, and he tells me that there is absolutely no lag. I decided to look into this a bit and found that the reason there is no lag is the same reason the install is so huge. Most of the game runs on your machine and the server is just there to pass you coordinates which are pretty small. I have noticed that lag is more often caused by the speed of a persons computer rather than their connection speed.

hello once again
Ive heard that it takes a really long patch to get this thing going, took around 7 hours for my EQ game. Anyways 2 more questions I hope some more nice people will answer :)

*Warning! This matieral may contain questions many people would find "stupid" suggestions are to shield your eyes and eat pop tart pizza*

mmmmm poptarts.... okays side tracked. Questions are, ive been hearing alot of diffrent things so i want to confirm this. Is this game for the Play Station 2 or the computer?
If it is for the computer dose it take up alot of virtual memory?

thanks!

It's actually playable on both!!!

The configuration was originally made for PS2 (That's why there is so much complaints about the user interface for the PC Version)

So enjoy it the way you want, but if you want to play the game on PS2 you will have to wait 3-4 more months.

The game is playable on btoh PS2 and PC, though I haven't tested out the PS2 version (obviously). As for the virtual memory thing, I run on 512mb and it is going pretty smoothly. I think the game detects how much RAM your computer has a adjust accordingly. I say this because I noticed a lot of data caching going on before the game loads and when you enter an area there is more data caching. So going back and forth between areas becomes much faster, however, after going through a lot of areas it looks like the system dumps some of the areas in favor of the new ones. Like I said it throttles based on how much you have.

ohh its on both? Sweet :). Ill probably get the playstation one cause i doubt my poor little comp could handle another download. That means ill probably have to get keyboard and some kind of adaptor right?
Wonder if there will be a way for the people on the PS2 version and on the PC to communicate? Hope so!
I checked my dial up speed thing it said 34.6kpt or somthing like that, hope it dosent cause problems on the PS2 version like it dose with EQ on computer. Link dead, freezing, time lag and all that other fun stuff =P

once again thank you for answering questions ^_^ I appciate it!

Yes you will be playing with people on the pc when your playing your playstation. As for the whole controll problem people are bringing up saying it was made for the PS. I like the controlls using the keyboard and think them to be way more easier than using a controller. Controller doesn't have anywhere near enough buttons for me. Also don't forget to add the price of the harddrive, which your in luck that it's going to come with the game. As for that dial up, me personally would think your going to run into lag. But I wouldn't know for sure.

yeah ill probably go with the key board too, playing online game with PS controller sounds too hard, well guess ill just have to wait and see if other people have problems with lag and stuff. Being able to talk to peoples on PC while im on PS sounds really good! Ill definalty look into this game asap. Thank you all once again for answering my billon questions =D
Good luck on game and i hope to see you there!

Hey, Everyone,

As for playing FFXI online with/without a controller, I am totally for using a PS2-like controller on the PC. I started out using a keyboard solely, but it got incredibly annoying. Everyone I know in real life who is playing this game started to like it much, much better once they started using a controller. If you have a chance to play both ways, I highly recommend that you do so. I found the game highly irritating just using the keyboard. Personally, I like using the keyboard AND PS2-like controller (and occasionally the mouse for some menus). But, most of the time, I am just using the controller.

Hope that helps,
A Fellow Mithran

---About the ps2 controller + keyboard + mouse ...

when you say you use them all, are you saying you have all 3 plugged into the comp ? and if so, are they just plugged into the USB things in the back... i have like 10 free slots of the USB because i have splitters running out of splitters :-D... if we CAN use all 3 at once, that'd be absolutely awesome!

and secondly, is it a normal PS2 type controller.... or what am i looking for ?

Good point, thanks for the advice, ill try both before picking which one i like more. Oh yeah another question, i dont expect anyone to know this but it would be great if they did. I read somewhere (not too much of a realiable soruce though) that you would be able to use the head phone thing and actually talk to other players. Any grounds for this?

Oh yeah and happy late turkey day! :)

It's a dream caressed by many online-games... Not just MMORPG. The only problem I see in the case of MMO, is the fact that it create that much more information to be shared so it WOULD slow down your computer no matter what... But one could always dream! And all in all I suspect that in the next 5 years (Ok 10 if we're lazzy) it will be possible and will be done by some.

I imagine all the filters you would need tought... I want to only speak to people in my group. Only to people LFG. I want to here what is on auction... And on and on. Not necesserily the best idea...

hehe looks like ill be dreaming for quite some time. yeah i imagen the filters woulud be a pain to figure out, but if done properly im sure it could work, with my luck i would scare off people with my voice anyway :) raaaa!

aw well, thanks again for the replies =D

The game itself doesn't support this, but it can be done. I'm running a TeamSpeak (http://www.teamspeak.org/) server on my comp, just for some friends of mine (4-5). I've mapped the speak button to the numberpad 1 key, and it works fine. This won't work very well if you want to talk to whoever you happen to meet up with during the game, but if you've got a few friends you play with often, it's great, at works wit just about any game.
