Why do Japanese hate being examined?Follow

#1 Jan 02 2004 at 3:34 AM Rating: Decent
I am from Bismarck and my friend told me about this Japanese Paladin in AF armor whose profile contained something like, "Japanese do not like to be checked without be asked so don't check. Got it!" I was told that he was a jerk. My friend was with his party at the lake in Qufim and they were standing on the ice to avoid the banshees at night when that Japanese showed up. He asked why we were standing there and the party replied that the banshees are out and that it is dangerous. Everyone thought he was going to kill the banshees but what he did instead was say that Americans are rude, and killed all the clippers and worms which the party needed to gain exp, leaving the banshees alone before he left. So I ask the forum, what is it about being checked that annoys the Japanese. Japanese must be dense if they can't understand that FFXI has been out for one year in Japan and that Americans are sometimes dazzled by what you are wearing since AF armor (espcially Paladin's) looks very unique, or see whether the person is capable of helping (killing the banshees in this case). Don’t misunderstand me; I am not rude as to make demands for help. It is my understanding that most people are cordial and nice and would be more than happy to help out without being asked. When I am in low level areas, I usually cast a Protect and a Cure II on those that need it. But anyway, I really want a good reason why Japanese people don’t like to be checked. This same friend of mine once asked an English-speaking Japanese why it is rude to check and that Japanese could only say, "It just is." That to me is a poor reason and only shows that some are not even intelligent enough to understand themselves or just follow the status quo blindly. Please excuse me for I am the one being dense if the reason is indeed simple. I have asked many whom I regularly party with and none knows the reason. By the way, you can always enable a chat filter to disable the informative message if you find checking rude.

All I can think is that it is a cultural thing. I myself don't understand it, I check people who's armor/weapons I have never seen before. It would be much more annoying to them if I asked, especially with the translator :)

Don't be the kid that asks "why" to every little thing out there. Its a cultural thing. You just have to respect it. Since when did they owe you a reason for not liking something? I bet if i asked you not to touch a big red button you'd ask for a reson why and then proceed to push it anyway. If they don't want you to do it then don't do it. If you can't respect that then you deserve whatever you get. It doesn't matter that you're wondering if they can assist you. If you really wanted to know that, just ask them. I've had very few problems sking trough the translator. I don't like people checking me either, do i have to give you a reason why? No. Do you hate the japanese now or something? as im sure that EXACTLY how the story went. The japanese guy just went balistic and starting killing all your exp for no reason eh? I'm sure hes posting in a forum about some annoying, rude, american guy that wouldnt stop bothering him for a raise, even though pallys can't raise, and didn't know that fact. Deal with it.

It's a cultural thing, but it's not a cultural thing from Japan, it's just part of the games culture. Somewhere way long ago some Japanese guy in the beta decided he didn't like being checked, and told everyone that it was rude. He probably had psychological problems that made him nervous about people looking at him. Oddly, the more you think about it yourself, the more it bothers you. Eventually, to respect the few people who don't like being checked you stop checking yourself. At some point you begin to think being checked yourself is rude. And you stop thinking about it, and may even tell others it is rude. Enter the Americans, who haven't been indoctrinated for a year in it, and it seems more than a little odd.

Watch carefully and you can see many in-game cultural habits being formed amongst the NA community, often with little or no basis in necessity. Sometimes influenced by the Japanese, sometimes created from whole cloth.

I dont like being examined either. If you are in a group fine, but unless the person has a bizzarre up, it is impolite to examine. You can use /sea all [name] instead of examining as well..and if you have the ablsolute need to examine, it means you are low lvl and wont need to see the armor anyway.

I doubt it actually has to do so much with cultural things as it does with personal prefs. I *personally* think its nice to know that people examine my char. It means that I in some way probobly look unique to them, have a neat looking item, or at the very least they're wondering what it is I'm wearing so they can avoid it like a plague.
Other players I know get kind of angry about it because they feel its kind of like prying. This gets worse in some games with PvP, because they feel like its spying against them to gain a kind of tactical advantage. Since PvP doesn't exist in FFXI yet, I doubt its that, but it could be an echo of it from other games too.
Some people just plain don't like it. Either way, I know plenty of Japanese players who don't give a damn about it, so I think you may have just experienced a rude player.

Something to think aboot!

This topic sounds racist.

There are jerks in every culture.

Scubamage hit it on the nail its partly a carryover from pvp games. Another way to think of it would you like it if you where walking down the street and someone just started inspecting you?

YOU ARE ALL A BUCNH OF RETARDS WHO SAY EXAMINING IS RUDE...Everyone in the game wears gear usualy, if i want to take a closer look i will, i dont need your permission, and its not rude..Zephton is examining you....ohhh how harsh....ever wonder why games like this put those abilities in the game??? To use them. If it was a cultural thing , and seeing as FFXI is a JP game Originaly, wouldnt you think they would have just not put it in the game, or at least have put a Permission prompt or option..like Click this box [] to allow others to examine you.
And its not just JP that think its rude...its NA too, you'll get it from anyone..hey i like walking down the street and watching the exmine emotes pop up...means i am worth looking at hehe...GET A LIFE THIS IS A GAME>>ITS NOT LIKE SOMEONE IS SEARCHING YOUR POSSESSIONS>>STUPID DEVELOPERS SHOULD JUST REMOVE THE EMOTE FOR INSPECT AND EXAMINE!!!!!
And Rui...most JP will help out just like most NA...that JP in your statement was just an ***...which no matter what race someone is, does not exclude them from being an ***.

I don't mind being examined but I think the people that do probably have experienced this one time or another:

Annoying examines you.
Annoying examines you.
Annoying examines you.
Annoying examines you.

That can get rude pretty quick. But for the most part, people don't care.

I'm not Japanese and I still think it is rather rude to inspect people. I look at it much in the same way as if I was standing in line and the guy behind me is looking me up and down or some little kid staring at me at a restaurant. I can't help it, to me it's just rude. Might as well just type /stare before checking. Will I yell and scream at people who DO check.. no. But I won't be running around looking at peoples things and running off either. I just think it would be nice if next time you run up just to check someone out you at least bother to say "Hi!"
#12 Jan 02 2004 at 7:05 AM Rating: Decent
Examine is put into the game for that reason, to examine people's armor. If they don't like it they can take it up with Square-Enix.

It's silly and I will not respect a silly customs unless I am in that country interacting with flesh and blood. This is a game that has gone international. All those japanese who don't like being examined can do is get use to it.

I think it is rude to criticize someone who examines you.

even though I can't wear it i like to see how the higher level people equip themselves, so i can guage what looks nice/works well/and what isn't great

It's probably thinking from the PVP like was previously mentioned otherwise it should be a ego booster.

It can also help to figure out how usefull someone would be in a PT

Ill make it all simple for you. There is nothing rude about being checked or checking someone. If someone doesnt like to be checked and they say so check them again. There is a filter so you dont ever have to know you are being checked. And for those who insist on real world analogies here is one that actually works.

Ok, I agree with you. No wait, I absolutely do not. *Sigh* Such ignorance and lame comparisons. Ok girls (and I do mean that in the most derogatory sense possible) let me give you a RL comparison that works. Drive your car to the mall and park it. While in it or not people will look at it. They will say "nice car" or "Im embarrassed for him." Ever see anyone get out of their car and say "what you looking at you rude American?" Your toon is a car; period. People will walk up to it and admire it or laugh. People will look in the windows to see if you have leather or bubble wrapped foam. No, people shouldnt touch your car. But neither is anyone touching you when they check you. You left that bag of weed sitting on the front seat? Tough. Youre in a public lot where the law says you dont have any right to expect privacy. Are you dip sticks finally seeing the logic? Have you stopped being **** in your anuses yet?

Above paragraph exactly as I wrote it in another tired thread on this subject.

In EQ, the ability to 'inspect' people was annoying enough to some that eventually Sony added the capability to prevent someone from doing it, if one so wished.

When someone examines me without asking first, I feel a bit violated. Perhaps that is because I am female. Logically, I know it is not a 'sexual' thing to have one's armour examined, but, emotionally, I think it is an ingrained reaction to what can feel like being 'touched' without permission. All anyone has to do though is ask me nicely first, and of course I will say 'sure, go ahead'.

However, even if people don't ask, if they only do it once and move on, I try to ignore it without comment. I am not sure if it is possible to inspect by accident in FFXI, but, it was in EQ (unless/until set to 'no inspect'), so I do have some tolerance for 'mistakes'. If they stand there and repeatedly do it though, I regard it as childish and annoying at the very least.

In my case, I have never, in any game, ever had any armour that really was worth gawking at .. so I think most who do examine my person are either doing it out of pity (some try to hand me equipment after seeing how poorly dressed I am LOL - and nope, I won't take it), or because they have not grown up yet and can't resist any temptation to see what they can get away with or get a rise out of someone, or just because they know it will annoy me.

I mainly examine other high level Thieves to see what kind of equipment they are using. I like to know what's out there and what seems to be working for other people who are of the same class as myself. I don't think it's rude, and Square put it in the game for a reason.
#17 Jan 02 2004 at 9:15 AM Rating: Decent
People who relate being examined to being stared at in real life should get a grip on reality. This is a GAME. Not your LIFE. Get over it.

As for the Paladin, I would've just taken note to his name, and if I ever saw him trying to level up a low level job, repaid him the wonderful favor.
#18 Jan 02 2004 at 9:31 AM Rating: Decent
why the heck does it matter if you have AF you should be proud that the are examining you. If you have something new that I've never seen before I will examine. press escape of you dont like seeing that so and so examines you. I for one dont give a care if some one checks me. I wouldnt respond ohh thats rude.

You guys put way too much thought and emotion into a game.

No one I've ran into/checked or Carbuncle has seemed to care. I've never gotten any crap for checking anyone. I use it as a convorsation starter or to see what they have to see what I might be able to get down the road.

The only thing I don't like its people on anon so I cant see thier level. And even then I don't really care.

If I remember reading a bit back on this, I think it is a part of the translation from English to Japanese.

What we see in English: "<me> examines you"
What the Japanese players see: "<me> stares at you intently"

I could be completely wrong about this because I am not Japanese nor do I have an import copy of FFXI. I do agree with just simply turning on the filter for examination/checking. That would be the best solution.

This is possible to find out. Just ask a *** who speaks english. Not that there are many of them ;)

Personally I think if you don't like getting checked you might as well get used to it because you are in the minority. Conforming will make your virtual-life (as well as your real life) a lot easier. hah

That's right! When I started playing I was pretty happy for people to /check me, thinking "oh cool, I must be badass"...........later on down the road, my thought when someone checked me was "What are you looking at? Get away". It rubbed off on me, but I don't care when people /check me still, just after a while it can hit a nerve. If someone checks me I check them back, that means they don't care, and I've gotten used to using /sea <t>.

BTW I agree with NotCoach....superb.

Sorry, JP players...this is my culture...

When my mom told me not to do something as a kid....i did it anyway, moreso becasue she said not to.

When a sign told me to "stay off the grass" it was all the more incentive for me to go on the grass.

When the teacher said "no talking in class" it was all the more thrilling to try and talk anyway.

When the sign says "no skateboarding" it just means "this is a really good skate spot"

When the sign at the beach says "alcoholic beverages prohibited", it means "this is the best place to have a drink,we are just trying to keep it to ourselves"

When people tell me "dont inspect me", to me it means "please spam /check on me and cure me of my phobia".

OK here's a question, can you get to someone's bazaar without checking them first? I always have to check first then hit view wares.
