This is not an original composition. This is a retelling of the information that can be found at: The Bilingual Website of Final Fantasy XI
I can only hope to do this justice.

Advanced Guide to Gardening

When most start off gardening it’s usually just for *****-n-giggles. You’ve got all these seeds and some extra gil, so why not? But the first time that a beginner gets a bumper crop of 20+ fire crystals they go from the *****-n-giggles stage to the “Oh my god, I can make some serious money!” stage.

Your thoughts become consumed with figuring out just what exactly you did to get such a massive yield and then repeating that formula again and again.

But therein lies the rub. See, gardening is like crafting in that you take a set of items, put them all together and get a final product. But even if you use the same pot, the same seed and the same crystal, your results can, and often do, change.

It’s All About Relationships

And I’m not talking about the “Will you be mine” kind of relationships either.

Most of you have seen this at some point or other:

*******=>*Fire*=>*****
****/*************\***
Water****Light****Ice**
***|*******|*******|**
Lightning*Dark***Wind**
****\*************/***
******<=*Earth*<=*****

(gotta love ASCII art!)

From this (rather bare bones) diagram, it’s quite easy to see that Fire is strong versus Ice and weak versus Water. These strong and weak relationships are an underlining principle throughout Vana’diel, including gardening.

The elements saturate every aspect, from the seeds, to the flowerpots, to the proper times for planting, feeding and harvesting.

The Elements of the Flowerpots
Earthen Flowerpot = Earth
Brass Flowerpot = Fire
Ceramic Flowerpot = Water
Porcelain Flowerpot = Wind

The Elements of the Seeds
Vegetable seeds = Earth
Grain seeds = Fire
Fruit seeds = Water
Herb seeds = Wind

The Days of the Week
Firesday
Earthsday
Watersday
Windsday
Icesday
Lightningsday
Lightsday
Darksday

The Phases of the Moon
New Moon
Waxing Crescent Moon
Quarter Moon
Waxing Gibbous Moon
Full Moon
Waning Gibbous Moon
Last Quarter Moon
Waning Crescent Moon

To determine which day of the week it is and what phase the moon is currently in, make use of the ’/clock’ function. You’ll get your information right there. If you’re not in-game or maybe you just want to get a heads-up on when the Full Moon will occur, head on over to Virtual Vana'diel Timer (it has plenty of other information as well).

Now, when to plant, what to plant, when to feed, etc. is determined by what you want to harvest. There’s a list of commonly known harvests for most of the seed-crystal-pot combinations at the end of this guide. If you see something on there that you like, make note of the seed type, flowerpot type and feed crystal used.

Day To Plant
If you’re going for items (and not Little Worms or Rock Salt), there are two days which are ideal.
1) When the element of the seed and the day are the same.
2) When the element of the seed is strong versus the element of the day.
If crystals are your game, then there are three choices.
(unless you want Light or Dark, then just go to 3)
1) Lightsday
2) Darksday
3) (now this one is tricky) First, you have to know what crystal you are going to feed the plant. Now, locate that element on the elemental relationship wheel. Whatever element your feed crystal is weak versus, is the same element of the day to plant.
Example: I want fire crystals (they’re so useful!) and, according to the elemental relationship wheel, Fire is weak versus Water. So, I would want to plant the seed on Watersday.

Feed the Plant Day
For those desiring items (again, not Rock Salt or Little Worms), you should feed the plant on one of two days
1) The day with the same element as the crystal.
2) The day whose element is weak versus the element of the crystal.
Example: (Fire Crystals aren’t items, but here’s an example anyways) If I want to get Fire Crystals I would feed the seed with a Water Crystal. So, I would want to feed the seed on either Watersday or Firesday.

Harvesting Day
Very simple, the closer to the full moon that you harvest, the larger the yield of your harvest.

Now, for a cautionary note:
Unless you want to harvest rock salt, you should not harvest on the day when the element of the seed and the feed crystal is strong versus the element of the day.
Example: So, lets say I’m using Fruit Seeds to get my Fire Crystals. Fruit Seeds = Water, I used a Water Crystal for feed, so if I were to harvest on Firesday, I’m liable to end up with a hand full of Rock Salt. Not what I wanted.

Some further tips:
- Some believe that the number of times you check the plant influences the harvest. Supposedly, not checking the plant at all gives more crystals and checking it frequently helps with getting a better harvest (i.e. no Little Worms or Rock Salt)

- It is thought that the flowerpots share an affinity for certain regions.
Earthen Flowerpot = Sarutabaruta = Earth Crystal, Tarutaru rice, Kukuru beans, Pototo, Saruta Cotton
Brass Flowerpot = Gustaberg = Fire Crystal, Black Pepper, La Theine Cabbage
Ceramic Flowerpot = Ronfaure = Water Crystal, Millioncorn, Sunflower seeds
Porcelain Flowerpot = Jeuno = Wind Crystal, Blue Peas
What does this affinity mean for you? Crops associated with a region will have higher yields if they’re seeded in the appropriate flowerpot.

- If your feed crystals’ element is the same as the element of the seed, you can sometimes get a harvest that can’t be acquired any other way.

- A note on speed of maturing: if the feed crystal is weak versus the seed you’ll have quick growth. And if the feed crystal is strong versus the seed, growth will be slower. Slow growth isn’t always a bad thing, as there can be some crops that can’t be had any other way.

- Little Worms and Rock Salt are typically the result of using a feed crystal that is either the same element as the seed or a feed crystal that is strong versus the seed.

- If you want crystals you should not use a feed crystal that is strong versus the seed. So, don’t feed a Grain Seed with a Water Crystal, or an Herb Seed with an Ice Crystal, etc

- Again, with crystals, if you use a feed crystal that is the same element as the seed, you will get a larger crop of crystals. This only works for four crystals: Ice, Earth, Lightning and Fire. Grain Seed + Fire Crystal = Ice Crystal, Fruit Seed + Water Crystal = Fire Crystal, etc.

- Whenever you check on your plants your moogle will make a comment. Some believe that the harvests vary depending on the comment. They will check the plant until they get the comment they want to hear and then harvest.

Here is the example of a Fire Crystal crop, condensed:
The flowerpot is the Brass Flowerpot.
The seed is the Fruit Seed.
The crystal used is Water Crystal.
Plant the Fruit Seed on either Lightsday, Darksday or Watersday.
Feed the Water Crystal when the plant needs it.
You can do this again, seeing as how the seed is a Fruit Seed. You do not have to.
Harvest should be during the Full Moon, on any day except Firesday.

And here’s the promised chart. It is far from definitive. After each crop is what some have yielded.
The Fruit Seed combinations are quite bare, there are so very many of them. Hopefully we can fill this in.

Crazy... yes, I believe you're right. I didn't really want it to be so looong, but to format the seed/crystal/pot chart into something more consise would have a true pain in the ***.

Believe it or not, I didn't even know about Pikko and her wonderful site until after I did this.

And finally, just to reiterate, this isn't my information. I only took what is offered on http://ffxi.game-host.org/eriwilde/ffxi/production/cultivation.html and reinterpreted it.

2) The day whose element is weak versus the element of the crystal.
Example: (Fire Crystals aren’t items, but here’s an example anyways) If I want to get Fire Crystals I would feed the seed with a Water Crystal. So, I would want to feed the seed on either Watersday or Lightningsday.

If you were feeding a water crystal, wouldn't you want to do it on Watersday or Firesday? I was just wondering if I should go by the rule (feed on a day that is weak to the crystal) or the example (feed on a day that is strong to the crystal).

I just planted a Tree Sapling last Fireday. Any recommendation on what to do with that for the best non-crystal/food harvest? I know there isn't a lot of info out there on these so I was hoping you got a little adventurous.
#12 Mar 07 2004 at 1:31 AM Rating: Good
You're in uncharted water. Hopefully your sapling doesn't grow into a treant and eat your moogle Smiley: yikes

My main use for gardening is reducing the costs of synthing.

Good luck with your experiment, post your results!

Spent 2k on 2 fruit seeds, put them in, left for night. Next morning i come on to feed them water crystals, and bam.... it doesn't give me option to feed them the crystals. Did I wait to long, thought i had 12 hours? Should i scartch them....

Nah, gardening can take anywhere from 24-72 hrs to finish a cycle after you feed the crystal. Feeding the crystal (through experience) can take 24-48 hrs to get it depending on seed and such.

Just harvested my first Tree Sapling. Took me 4 rl weeks to grow and 2 crystals. My result- 16 Cinnamon Sticks :P I'm sure better results are possible, but this was rather disheartening.

Yes, the results can be dishearting...you can get a rock salt sometimes..... ;_;

But you can get some good results, for example I used 2 dark crystals at 2 vegetables at a darkday and I get 2 black rocks at one plant and 1 black rock at the other (ummmm....i get some light crystals other day, I am not sure what I do to get light crystals)

IMHO the gardening secrecy to get money (and hard work) is repeat the gardening, you will get bad results, some results will be a razoable, sometimes you will get a good result and eventually you will get an exceptional result. I farmed some seeds and stockpiled these seeds (any kind) at my mog house. I started with one pot and when I harverst I seed a new plant (no time to waste, I don't play all time and I cannot wait to the apropriate day to seed, then I seed a new plant immediatly).

I am slowly buying new pots and I try buy diferent kinds of pots (brass, ceramic, earth, porcelain), with luck I will seed a plant at the right day inside the right pot. I use the crystal appropriate to the day that I feed the plant with the crystal (fireday I use fire crystal and so go). Basically, I have no control over the day I seed the plant or the day I harverst it, I only try use the correct crystal for the day I fertilize the plant with the crystal (I have seeds stockpiled and I have crystal of almost all the types stockpiled too). I use this method because I don't have 24/7 gaming to wait the correct day to seed, the correct day to feed with the crystal and the correct day to harverster, then this is the better I can do.

However, as the results have an alleatory componet, if you try repeat a recipe correctly to get an iten you want (for example, fire crystals) you can get other result (for example, khazam peppers or, worse, rock salt ;_;).

I stockpile the vegetables I harverst (popotos potatoes, khazam pepper, saruta cotton, etc) to get stacks because stacks sell better. I make the same with crystals I get. When my AH is free I sell them. Slowly I am making money.

I am sure that ther is other ways to get money. You can farm gil directly fron orcs, goblins, etc. However farming will be a lot boring if you need repeat it all time. You can camp a NM that drop something that sell high price at the AH. But you will need have a lot of patience to wait the NM spawn or to compete with other players trying get the same spwan that you (and maybe you need kill the NM a lot of times before it drop what you want). You can craft, but you need invest a lot of time and money to get the crafting skill at a level that permits you to craft something that sell at a high price. You can fish...

I prefer gardening. Let's tell the true, almost all the work is moogle made...you need only log at your mog house at the morning and at nightand sometimes you need farm some seeds.

But rock salts are really dishearting.... ;_;

all pretty good, cept you might wanna do a section on which recipes are more profitable, currently have about 5 ceramic pots growing corn and about 5 growing fire Cs (and 2 growing plat nuggets).

Gardening is great, but I'd like to know if there are any recipes that are VERY good for profit that you can do w/ regular seeds and not tree cuttings.

This guide was SO VERY helpful! I am interested in becoming one of your gardening researchers. I have done a bit of gardening myself and have had some positive results! All I ever did was try to use the same crystal as the day, but never paid attention to the planting day or phase of the moon. I will try some of the combinations you have suggested and I will post some of my findings so you can update the guide. I agree that this is front-page material! Let's keep up the good work!

You should call this post "Gardening for Dummies" (because this is the first time I've understood completely the whole deal about elemental relationships...). A wonderful addition to the gardening information here.

I wanted to print it out, but it is a little long for me in this form. I compressed the introduction (up until the actual recipes) and posted the .doc <here> in case anyone else wants to print it off. The recipes will have to wait until I have more time. >_<

Thanks for sharing your knowledge (and l337 comprehension skills)!

I just said l337. >_<

I am in the same boat as you. I lucked out once and made 2 black rocks with little effort from gardening, that sold fast and made tons of gil (at least for me it was). I was hooked on gardening after that. So I bought a bunch of pots and started doing the same formula. (Veg seed + Dark Crystal = ?) This time with mixed results. I used different/cheaper pots, and didnt pay attention to the day/moon as much. I still had moderate success 4 light crystals per plant, 1 black rock and some various mushrooms. Still made a profit. Now with a new character (whos poor) I want to start the same process. I am on Phoenix server in Bastok and want to learn/teach gardening. I am slowly buying pots and farming seeds and crystals. I like to garden black stones and light crytals since they seem to be worth alot of gil (at least for me they are). Is there any specific combo out there geared toward making gil from gardening.

Also a side question. Does wearing field gear (+1 mining and harvesting) increase your gardening skills? and if so how long do I have to wear it, and when?
#24 Apr 19 2004 at 5:38 PM Rating: Default
Thanks for the work, have been adding to the bilingual chart, but this is helpful!

No, field gear does not increase gardening, the only increase to gardening comes from the mog enhancement for earth.

My tree sapling results:
Brass pot Dark, dark Rock salt
Brass pot Dark, Ice Black chocobo feathers
Brass pot light, light Gold leaves

Porc Pot dark, dark Persikoses
Porc pot Light, light shell bugs

Tree cuttings:
brass pot no crystals tree sapling
earthen pot Dark, Ice black chocobo feathers

Cactus Stems
brass pot light, light dark crystals
brass pot dark, water light crystals

I have been trying like heck to cultivate Black Rocks and Light Crystals. They are worth decent gil, Get about 2500 to 4000 gil per pot. Ive been working on the formula for a while now. I just planted a new batch last night, Ill report on the results. Till then my formula is as follows.

Any flower pot
Plant Vegetable seeds on Lightsday
Fertilze Dark Crystals on Darksday
Harvest on Darksday close to Full moon or Waxing or Waning Gibbous.

Well thats been working for me, but Im sure there are better ways out there. Im only interested in selling the items for gil at the moment. Let me know if there is better ways out there.

Has anyone found any information on the new flower pot yet? Arcana Pot, I think. Im guessing it has light or dark elements attached to it, but I can only speculate. If this is the case I cant wait to get one. I only fertilize dark cyrstals to harvest black rocks and light cyrstals and this pot (hopefully) will increse the volume harvested. I looked everywhere in bastok last night, but alas I could not find it. If anyone out there knows about it please let me know.
