First Conflict: Ballista

I created this guide shortly after trying Ballista out for the first time (and absolutely decimating Windurst due to their team's misunderstanding of the rules), so it only applies to rules set once the game first came out. Send me an e-mail at marsteadtk@hotmail.com if you need me to make any changes.

So, what is Ballista? Before the Great War and the rise of adventurers in Vana'diel, the three nations would have a form of nonlethal combat called "Conflict" in order to train their troops in case of war. It was outlawed after the war, but it has been ressurected by the Councils. Ballista itself is only a form of Conflict (there are more than one), it is the San d'Orian style which acts a lot like a violent scavenger hunt.

First things first, how to get a Ballista License, which requires you to be Rank 3. To do this, you must speak with your Ballista representative in your home nation (An elvaan near Ranperre Gate in North San d'Oria, a galka above the Bastok Metalworks, or a mithra in the back room of Heaven's Tower) and listen to his or her tale of how Conflict has been legalized once again. You will then be sent to the other two nations to deliver letters and speak with those nations' leaders to be allowed to participate.

In San d'Oria, you will want to speak to the elvaan outside of Ranperre's Gate in North San d'Oria and then you will be sent to the Chateau to speak to the King. Simply walk up to the front door and select it. Then go back to the elvaan and deliver the letter.

In Bastok, you will want to speak to the galka above the Bastok Metalworks and then you will be sent to the President's Office to speak to the President. Once again, walk up to the door to select it. Then go back to the galka and deliver the letter.

In Windurst, you will want to speak to the mithra in the back room of Heaven's Tower and then you will be sent to the nearby desk to talk to the Star Sibyl. Once she finishes speaking with you, go back to the mithra to deliver the letter.

Now return to your home nation and speak with the person who gave you the quest, and he will send you to your nation's leader. Once you speak with your leader, return to the quest-giver and s/he will give you the Ballista Lisence key item. Now you can participate in Ballista at will. Talk to the Conflict NPCs to learn Ballista schedules.

Now, what do you do to actually participate? Well, at 0:00 every other day, a Ballista begins in Jugner Forest, Meriphataud Mountains, AND Pashow Marshlands (they happen simulatenously so the only reason to pick one over the other is because you need 6 people minimum from both teams to be able to play). Pick one to go to (Jugner seems to have plenty of people) and make your way to the outpost. At the outpost, you will meet the Herald, the referee of the game. In order to register, you must meet the following requirements:

1) It must be between 12:00 and 23:59 before the Ballista begins.
2) You must pay a registration fee.
3) There must not be more than 36 people on your nation's team.

The minimum allowed number of players for each team is 6, if there are any less than that, then the Ballista will be cancelled. There is also a different level cap for each Conflict, so pay close attention before accepting. Once all this is set up, you should just wait by the Outpost for the Ballista to begin.

Shortly before the alarm is sounded, you will have Invisible and Sneak cast on you so that you can find a strategical position to start at. Do so, as it will soon become a mad dash to gain Gate Breach status to score poitns, and you will want to be safe at the beginning. Once battle begins, "LAISSEZ-FAIRE!" will flash on the screen and battle music will begin to play. You are now participating.

If you go to your command menu you will notice two new commands: Sprint and Quarry. You use Sprint like the thief ability flee, it allows you to escape from people trying to kill you and helps to collect Petra faster. Quarry is used to dig up items (you're looking particularly for petra). Aside from petras, you can also dig up (and instantly use) High-potions, Elixirs, Ethers, Remedies, prism powder, and [annoyingly] poison potions. Once you dig up a petra, your Sprint command will be changed to "Scout", which will give your distance from the nearest Rook and what direction it is in.

Wait, what did that all mean? Well, Ballista isn't just a conflict where you run around killing the enemy--you have to score points by collecting the aforementioned petra and tossing them into Rooks. The problem is that the Rooks are sealed off to anyone who does not have Gate Breach status, so even if you have 20 petras on you but you do not have Gate Breach status, you cannot score. What to do?

To gain Gate Breach status, you need to deliver the killing blow to an enemy team-member. This can be accomplished in any way you like, whether that be beating them over the head or nuking them to death. Whatever works for you!

Once you feel you are safe and have enough petras (you will be able to deposit petras once with your gate breach status, so try to fit in as many as you can) find the nearest rook and toss them inside by targeting and slecting it. Be warned, for every so often the rook will vanish into the earth and re-appear in another position.

Whichever team throws the most petras in the rooks by the end of the day (one real life hour) wins.

STRATEGY

Always remember to keep in contact with your team. Your linkshell is automatically unequipped upon entering Ballista, and your /l chat function now talks to your team. Use it often.

Offensive: If you wish to play offensively, it is best to use quarry as often as you can when no enemies are in sight so that you can collect as many petras as possible. This is also very useful for obtaining Elixirs after a battle as they substantially heal your HP and MP. Quarry can also get you out of a bind (quite literally); if you find yourself frozen in place by an enemy mage, you can quarry and pray that you dig up an elixir to keep you alive until it runs out.

Melee: Run around, use sprint as often as allowed, and try to smack your enemies. A lot of the time, when enemies feel they are overwhelmed, they will run. This is difficult to counter-act, unless if you have a mage nearby.

Black/Red Mages: Your most important spell here is Bind. Sure, you can inflict a whole hell of a lot of nasty status effects on these guys, but by binding them they are unable to get away from the fighters and it certainly disorients them. Always try to cast this first before fighting someone, especially a melee, as they will probably rip you apart if they're close enough. If bind wears off, sleep your enemy and then wait for bind's recast to expire, then cast it again.

Defensive: Guarding rooks can be a good idea, but usually by the time someone with Gate Breach reaches one, it will be too late (unless if you're out to bind them before they can reach it). Remember that an enemy loses all his petras upon death, so try to kill them rather than just try to keep them away from the rooks. As a defensive player you shouldn't be using quarry much, as you will need sprint to chase away enemies and more importantly run away from the petra-carrying offensive players.

White Mages: You can cure, but it really isn't suggested as there is a more important thing for you to do first. If you ever see a black or red mage, you should cast silence as quickly as possible. A silenced black or red mage in Ballista (or anywhere else) is pretty close to worthless, and by the time he realizes that he can't bind you your team will probably already have him dead.

Be sure to keep in mind that enemy mobs in the area can still attack you, but as it stands right now there are plenty of spectators who'd be more than happy to pull them off you. Even if they don't, if you die to the beastmen no one will get Gate Breach status and you can still return to your Camp point as usual (as you do not lose or gain any experience during the fight).

When you die, you will have a short (30-second) timer and the option to return to your camp. By waiting the 30 seconds you will be re-raised on the spot you are on but will not regain your MP (and you have to lose that 30 seconds) and by returning to your camp point you do not have the advantage of starting where you were. Either way, you are invis/sneaked when you do come back alive, so keep that in mind and in your strategy.

After an hour has passed, "VICTOIRE!" is declared for the winners and everyone is lined up by the Herald. Speak with the Herald after he tallies off the scores to receive your award (at this point it is gil, it may be items and/or Conquest points in the future) and the recognition of your peers.

Most of all, have fun!

Please bear in mind that I wrote this right after competing in one of the first Ballistas, and it is still in its testing phases so there will definitely be changes coming. If there are changes made that I am unaware of, please post them here so that others will know what is going on.

I tried to include everything but if something slipped my mind, by all means place it here!

Thanks.

I just completed my first Ballista Conflict as a blm. I agree that bind was VERY USEFUl, but thats partly because we had outnumbered windurst by 12 to 6. I had particular success when I paired with a whm and we took turns binding the Enemy and nuking untill he was killed. I died once to monk who got next to me and ripped apart my fragile taru/blm. The only thing I'd really add is that the blm AOE -ga spells were very usefull as well. I look forward to a more even battle to see how that changes things.

Btw, anyone wondering about the role of thief in PvP, ours is kind of amusing. Sneak is basically useful in junction with Hide or Invis, and needs fast use. (Sneak > Hide > stab a taru in the head)

Our better use? Well, we don't need no stinking Quarry to find Petra's, let the other players find them for us! Steal will literally jack other players petra's, as will Mug. (And from what I hear, if they have multiples you steal multiples)

Hey Ya know man you acctaully made it sound fun to try it out gonna have to do it sometime. All and all i was like oh great pvp gonna be a pk game now (this is what i thought when i first heard they are starting pvp and no info was put out). then i read it was gonna be like a mini game hmm okay sounds okay so i still have to hear ppl /sh stuff about fighting one another. But now that it is in places like junger and the marshlands it might be kinda fun. Also quick question with sneak/invis on you can you still target someone? would be really cool if you couldnt target someone if you couldnt see them a blm would rule ballista then lol. Ah well some info on that would be nice so you couldnt just shadow someone and kill them as soon as it started to get the rook to open.

wow. squenix is brilliant. what do you guys think the next conflict event will be? I have a hunch its something about dynamis maybe =/?

yeah invis is pretty useful, as the battle was about to end a galka warrior popped out of invis and started hitting me. Its a nice way to sneak around to mages and keep them from casting, particularly if you were a thief or something using a low delay weapon to interupt thier casting with.

just got done doing this on the titan server in jugner forest

which also seems to be the most popular place to fight.

few things i noticed:

bind really is useful on the run, -ga spells inflict massive damage when comeing upon a teamate that is being massacred, sleep really sucks as it sticks for a decent amount of time, provoke really didn't have any effect, auto-target is off a bit you have to manually do teh lock-on function, since titan is highly populated with japanese speaking players the auto-tranlate function causes some distractions in your stradegy.

the down time for being killed is around 1 min- 30 seconds can't remember, you can instantly go back to camp if you prefer but its significantly far from battle area.

you can do weapon skills from a far distance too, none of that to far from battle messages ^^

i suggest having a party or alliance set up before hand it really comes in handy, going into the fight solo kind of puts you at a disadvantage.

AGAIN THIS WAS REALLY FUN, i didn't even care that i died 4 times, i had my fair share of killing too but not too dramatic

this will hopefully shut the noobtards up that run around saying "i will own you when pvp comes out"

not for sure if original post had reward amount in it but i recieved 1157 gil for participating on the winning nation

good luck to all! THIS WAS THE MOST FUN I"VE HAD IN A WHILE!!!

I participated in the first and only match on Alexander so far, it's 1am here in Alaska. Anyways my post is about me whining.
There is a huge delay on being ably to play your second match, I waited 6 hours real time and was still unable to join another ballista game. I am very very aggrivated with this, we have a low participation rate and on 2 separate occations I and 2 of my friends would have made 6 members and the event would have taken place. However due to the long delay the match was cancelled sending quite a few angry sandorians or windurtans home cause bastok had no members. But I will say the only reason I am mad is cause it is the most fun thing thus far in the game and I dont like them making me wait this long to play again.

I too was in the same match in Jugner with subcommander. In fact, we were in the same party! ^_^ I had a lot of fun as well. Some things I thought of while playing. At first, I was using quarry a lot to get the petras, but when finally tried to kill someone, I got gang raped by those bloody Bastokians. So my advice, kill someone for Gate breach first, head back to your camp to quarry for petras. This is because the further you are from their rook, the more likely you dig up petras. Good luck everyone, have fun. And subcommander/Millin, I (appletonoutcast/Dominyl) thank you for helping to add to a great time! ^_^

I'd like to applaud SE for doing something that I really thought was impossible, make PvP fun. I could go into a long rant about why, but I think anyone who's played Ballista so far understands why, it's hard for me to describe. I never thought it could work, but I tip my Red Mage cap to them.

Per the Ballista Rules, Once a player has participated in Ballista, the player must wait until 12:00 midnight (JST) has passed before he/she may participate again. So you can play essentially once per earth day, presumably to give everyone a chance to get into the conflict.

Keep in mind that this is just a test phase, and Ballista is just one event among many that will make up Conflict (the PVP section of the game in its entirety.) No doubt there will be plenty more additions to keep people busy in some form of PVP, if they wish to do so.

Hmm... good guide. Wonder where Bard will take their place in Ballista. I could see us sleeping enemies so they could get ambushed, but that's it. -.-

The level caps are related to the month (VanaDiel time) the matches are. On Ragnarok, it was LV30 cap month. Totally LOVED it. Will agree with others that the "downtime" to replay sucks, but i'm sure that'll be fixed once fully implemented. Jugner is also the most popular place on Ragnarok, mainly because I think the terrain is more suited to it. Lots of nice hidey places. I played in the 4th match on Ragnarok, Sandy v. Windy, and we (Sandy) ruled the day. I'm a LV50 THF, but being capped at 30 was fine. SA knocks LV30 Taru mages on their ***, Steal is awesome for the rocks. Had a GREAT solo 1v1 with a RNG. All in all, good fun for all involved. We won by a sick amount...70-26 if I remember correctly. Mainly because Windy fielded a LOT of Taru mages (duh :P), and once under attack, they'd Bind and run like hell when they heard that SA pop. I was second highest scorer in my group (8 scores to my name), and have at least 15 confirmed "kills" :P

Anyway, I'm loving it so much, I can't wait to play again ^^

Great guide. Made me want to get in on the action, even though the idea of PvP is anathema to me usually.

Questions:

1) When you quarry, where does the loot go? I ask that because you mentioned trying to quarry up an elixir in a hurry to save yourself, but, if that elixir would go to the group's 'treasure pool', you might not even get it or it might take time to get it - so does it go directly into the inventory of the person who quarries it?

2) Do you have to have a Ballista License to be a spectator? I am gathering not because it is not in a special arena, right?

3) You keep saying 'you will have sneak and invis' - is this something the game does for you, or do you have to assign someone to cast those on whoever needs them?

4) When you die, do you lose experience? Do you gain experience at all killing someone else? I gather not (either)? (edited to add this. sorry if I missed it somewhere in my quick read of the guide).

I am glad you clarified the 'Rank 3' thing, because the MOTD from SE last night said 'Level 3' - big difference imho.

Anyway .. thanks SO much. You did a wonderful job of explaining it all. I am sure there are more details to come, but, I am amazed and impressed at how much you got into this guide, so fast. /bow

If you quarry up an item, you must use it immediately, else lose it.

No, anyone can watch it.

Yes, the game makes everybody sneaked/invised before the game starts. No mages required.

No EXP is gained or lost when participating in Ballista.

From what I have read from their site, the answer is yes. They mention that players will have any potions they use regenerated for them. So you can use pots without worrying about replacing them.
