Oh well, I guess I thought people would find this useful, but it leaked to page two without a reply or even a rating. I know I won't be writing something like this again. :P

well I have to give you a rate up for trying but....
the sad fact is (Im not going to make many friends saying this but its true) 75-80% of the new players I hav encountered could care less about not gimping themselves and playing the job they choose right.

there is info on alot of sites like this but either they dont read or dont care.

probably "its my game I play they way I want" well thats fine but when 5 others expect you to do your job and you dont welll..... you get the point

anyway nice job to bad alot of new players dont care

such a shame

Yeah, I know at least 90% of new players won't care if they read that, but hopefully at least two or three will, and that's good enough for me. :)

Personally, I think you did an excellent job on this guide. ^^ You did a good job of weighing the pros and cons of each class on a neutral basis, so that I can't see any traces of the popular "Dark Knight > All Damage Dealer" phrase. You also didn't make another mistake (at least in my book) which is dictating EXACTLY what you should do, but just put it down as what you'll probably be expected to do. Thus, you managed to leave the door for creativity open. And you didn't say that certain race/jobs sucked, just some were easier and more natural for the job. Again, thank you so much for doing that, it irks me so much when people beat the lack of creativity into people's heads.

All that being said, Elvaan Samurai are the best!!! Galka are too big to fit in our armor and still look cool, and mithra hold their katana like a baseball bat! ...yah...hrrrrmph...I'm not a hypoctrite, or anything...
....
.........
Rate up for not holding that outburst against me! :P

I gave an excellent

now if the mods of these forums would sticky these types of posts (yours is very good and deserves it) we might be in buisness for a better vanadiel.

seems this site is one of the more popular so we do need some stickies of PT invite ettiquite-Job description-good support job combos etc.

^^^^^^^nice job

Hey, some support! ^^ Thanks, I've had a bad day and one of the reasons I typed this was to get my mind off the day, heh. The positive feedback sure makes me feel better. ^^

Awesome guide! I'm just about to level 30, and I have been agonizing for 7 months now on what I want to take all the way to 75. This guide helped to add some real non biased info from someone who has seen everything in action. Thanks, oh and by the way
Go Giants!!!

*tear* You didn't even play down my two main jobs like so many others have done...that's a beautiful thing (51War 34Mnk...unless you cared enough to actually look at my profile ;) )...That guide is quite nice...I noticed you put boost in somewhere for a warrior ability though, if you want to fix that typo =)

Overall quite nice.

I want to make a DK/SAM but I don't know if it will work like I want it to. I made a Galkan Warrior in Bastok thats level 4 now. I'm leveling swords right now. Could I get a little help on this anyone please?

As a WAR/MNK, your tanking ability is enhanced with Counter, Boost (spam Boost to gain hate), and a VIT increase, and your damage-dealing is enhanced by a STR and DEX increase.

^^

EDIT: Oh crap; you were right. I just spotted it in the THF section. I'll fix that right quick. ^^;;

Well, first off, I would get an axe and great axe A.S.A.P. Also, SAM sub would only really be viable at level 60, but there is a problem with it. A DRK/WAR or even a DRK/THF cannot go "all-out", so to speak. What I mean is that they will never be able to reach their full damage potential.

Subbing SAM would increase the full damage potential, but you won't be doing any more damage than you would with a different sub because you have to hold back in order to keep hate on the tank. You can give it a try though. ^^ Good luck.

I plan on trying FFXI soon. (in about a month) I have been searching through the forums the last few days so that I won't be totally blind when I start. As for your guide, I learned alot from it. I played EQ for about 3 years, and always prefered the tank type classes. So I'm going to take your advice and level WAR to 30, then taking NIN. Many thanks again for your guide. I plan on streaming through it often untill I get the hang of the game. Cheers!

Good job on a well-written guide. Maybe a few new or future players will see it and benefit.

I do have one complaint. You really shortchanged the Elvaan bard. Sure, I am biased (see below). I think this might be the best class for bard honestly. Bards aren't supposed to heal. My MP is a special bonus for emergencies. I don't heal at least 75% of the fights when I am exping. And juice can make up for any lack of MP.

Elvaan have the HP, VIT, CHR to handle the beating that comes when you are dealing with a link that needs to be lullabied. I spent a good bit of my time in Yhoator Jungle sleeping any random mandragoras that popped by our camp just to avoid another party snagging them. I could keep a second mob claimed so that we could chain them, not to mention keeping my songs up on the other party members. I would think a Taru would have a devil of a time doing this. If a lullaby was resisted, they'd have to spend some time getting hit before they can recast.

Same idea for BCNM40, which is nothing with a dead bard. I'd go Elvaan, Hume, Taru, etc for the best bard races. Remember, your party has a whm or a rdm/whm (or even a smn, although it is a waste) as the main healer. A pld heals a pld and a nin avoids attacks altogether so the bard's MP should be reserved for emergency heals and spells like Poisona. A bard that spends time healing is a bard that isn't singing.

I was mainly referring to XP parties. :P Yes, for things like BCNM and HNM, race plays a much larger role than it would otherwise, and for BCNM 40 with those damn Mandras I would certainly seek out an Elvaan BRD (although it wouldn't be totally necessary). (^_^)

If you're dealing with new players, BCNM's, EXP parties, and just about everything else (Blind Moby, anyone?) is wayyyyy off. The best guide for choosing your race/job is this: Look at the races, gauge their strengths, pick your challenge level, go with your interests!

In my case, I got a TON of heat for going for DRK/RDM from the very beginning. However, I KNEW that I wanted to do it. I wanted the firepower, and I wanted the magic flexibility, and I knew I'd take a hit on defense. It's not been super easy, but I knew ahead of time, and decided, as a seasoned player, that I didn't want the road to be too easy, and it's been fine. Some people want to try different combos - otherwise Vana'diel would be a lame world of clones.

I don't think you actually read it. (^_^)

Please don't take my "ease scales" as "best to worst" scales; that is not their intention.

Or you would've caught sentences like that peppered throughout the guide. Thanks for complimenting me on spending a good hour just trying to help people though. /sarcasm off

EDIT: P.S. Don't pick something solely because it's unique. Pick it because you believe it allows you to be the best you can be. Sure, DRK/RDM makes it challenging for you, and that's all fine and dandy, but what about the other 5 people in the party? You're making it more challenging for them as well. Don't forget that. (^_^)

I know, and I'm very upfront about it - I hit well, and I can be a backup healer - 99% of the time, they're fine with it, because even with my job combo, I'm consistent.

What an awsome guide! A++ would read again.

Even though I'm almost lvl 60, I have to admit that white maging and black mageing are pretty much all I know. If I started a new job (I'd love to lvl BST someday) I'd be pretty ignorant. So if anything thanks for the equip info! Now I know what to buy before I get a feel for the job.

Bookmarked and bumped ^^

I'd like to make a suggested correction to your ranger guide. You mention dex is a close second on importance to agi. Why? Ranged accuracy is agility (though + ranged accuracy is a dime a dozen), and ranged damage is STR (and +ranged attack is pretty rare...). That's why mithra isn't the only choice for ranger. On the contrary, all the best rangers I've ever partied with have been hume.

I wondered what base stat increased RNG ATK. . . . Thank you very much! I will eat my humble pie and update the guide. ^^

EDIT: lol, I wonder why people keep rating down my guide. It has hit 5.00 twice now, and it's fallen below again. Oh well, at least most people appreciate my hard work. :P

hey is the warrior/ninja combo for real? like that has got to be the most damaging right? or is it just one of the most damaging?
ive played as warrior in everquest (why i played that game really bewilders me now) and usually been a MT for the exp parties. my dad is playing as the warrior in EQ now and funnily enough he was given an uber item in an event which happens to be a great axe... heh.
well ive forgotten what i was leading to... something stupid now doubt!.. anyway i was going to ask more but i figure by playing the game more i will see more of the jobs in action and get an idea of what works and what doesnt and what works bloody good.
thanks for any replies
peace
