Guide for Beginner to ThirtyFollow

#1 Sep 18 2004 at 5:37 PM Rating: Good
_-Beginers Guide to 30 -_

~Basic Jobs~

Warrior (WAR) - This job may be the primary tank, unless you have a Ninja or Paladin. Otherwise you may be used as a damage dealer or secondary tank. - PREFERED WEAPON : Great Axe or Sub NIN and dual wield Axe

White Mage (WHM) - This job by far is the best choice for a healer, but that is its only purpose in the party, but at higher levels this job could make money off of power leveling and/or teleports. - PREFERED WEAPON : Staff or Club

Black Mage (BLM) - One of the best jobs for damage dealing, it can also part for a minimal healer when subbing Red Mage or White Mage. - PREFERED WEAPON : Staff or Club

Thief (THF) - This job wont get very good parties until people relize it is a damage dealer, After level 15, Thief is a damage dealer, but only when using Sneak Attack and Trick Attack - PREFERED WEAPON : Dagger

Monk (MNK) - A very good damage dealer, especially when using boost. PREFERED WEAPON : Hand-to-Hand

Red Mage (RDM) - One thing about this job is you are a Red MAGE not Red Warrior, you should be used to heal or use damage causing magic, Not Melee, you will relize this once you go on to higher levels. - PREFERED WEAPON : Sword

~Advanced Jobs~
Note: YOU CANNOT START WITH THESE JOBS

Paladin (PLD) - A job made specifically for tanking, does minimal damage and can take hits better than any other job...not saying its the best job for tanking. - PREFERED WEAPON : Great Sword

Ninja (NIN) - Another tanking job that can dual wield weapons (carry two weapons) at level 10, Tanks using Utsusemi(12) which gives them shadow images, and causes them to take no damage at all for three hits. - PREFERED WEAPONS : Katana

Dragoon (DRG) - A job with a pet. A wyvern not a dragon...When you notice your wyvern is about to die and your 'Call Wyvern' Ability is not ready yet, Consider healing between fights to keep it alive, but to sacrifice TP. - PREFERED WEAPON : Pole Arm

Dark Knight (DRK) - A mix between a Black Mage and a Warrior. Do not abuse Soul Eater. And normally Melee and use minimal magic. -PREFERED WEAPON : Scythe

Samurai (SAM) - A great job for damage dealing. Mainly depended on for Skill Chains. Great addition to a party. PREFERED WEAPON : Great Katana

Beast Master (BST) - Normally doesnt party but can if the Mob being charmed isnt even match or higher (it wont steal exp). - PREFERED WEAPON : Axe

Summoner (SMN) - Another job with a pet, summons. Dont bother taking this job past 20 is all you have is Carbuncle, GET AVATARS. - PREFERED WEAPON : Staff or Club

Bard (BRD) - A GREAT addition to any party. The job plays songs to incres stats or to regenerate MP or HP. - PREFERED WEAPON : Staff or Club + String and Wind instruments

Ranger (RNG) - A massive damage dealer. Uses ranged attacks to deficate prey. NOT MELEE. - PREFERED WEAPON : Ranged (not boomerang) Gun or Bow

~Terms~

Party (PT) - A group of 6 or less people set for a certain purpose. (To gain EXP, To skill up, To do a mission or quest, etc.)
Group - Same as party
Auction House (AH) - Place where you buy stuff from other players.
Mob - Monsters
Signet - A spell casted on oyu by the guy at the door, Gives chance of mobs droppping crystals and you will recieve conquest points from the mobs you or your party defeats.
Aggro (Agro) - when a monster attacks you without you attacking them

~Starting out~

When you choose your starting job be sure to equip your weapon and if your a mage use the scroll. Be sure to deliver the Adventerures Certificate. And make way out of the city and to the wilderness. DONT FORGET TO TALK TO THE GUY BY THE EXIT AND GET SIGNET

San D'Oria >> West Ronafure/East Ronafure
Windurst >> East Sarutabaruta/West Sarutabaruta
Bastok >> South Gustaburg

Target the mob you want to fight and press :Enter: scroll down to 'Check' and press :Enter:, thats how you check the mob. It will give readings,
Too weak to be worth while (too weak)- Gives 0 exp
Easy Prey (EP)- Gives 12-36 exp
Decent Challenge (DC)- Gives 50-72 exp
Even Match (EM)- same level as you Give 100 exp
Tough (T)- Gives 120 exp
Very Tough (VT)- gives 150 exp
Incredibly Tough (IT)- Gives 200 exp
Note : these stats change when in a party

For the first few levels you can fight fight even matches without dieing...after level four when you die you lose experience. Once you cannot defeat even matches move down to decent challenges. Mages : Dont forget to update your scrolls. Everyone : update your armor and weapons as much as possible.

Once level 10 move to Valkurm Dunes and you will begin to party.

~Dunes~
Valkurm Dunes - a great place to exp turned bad..because over overpopulation..in your first few levels here watch out for gobs.

Here you begin to party for the first time, you will learn much needed tasks for the road to come.
Mages will get parties the fastes and Thieves will get them slowest..but thieves dont quit you will get through it ( im a THF)

~Parties~
Parties are an essential party of the game..at about level 12-15 when you fight decent challenges you have a chance of dieing.

A party needs a tank a healer and damage dealers
Tank chices : WAR PLD and NIN paladin and ninja are the best choices for tank if the sub warrior and use Provoke.
Healers : WHM SMN and RDM White mage or Summoner should be the main choices but its always good to have two healers in a party
Damage Dealers : SAM BLM THF DRG SMN RNG DRK and MNK , they are all very good but i recommend always having a BLM and if you can a SAM, THF is worthless in the party until it has Sneak Attack at level 15

Note: in lower levels you could use a SMN to heal because if they sub WHM they would have more MP than normal WHM's so keep that in mind, but they will not have the higher scrolls.

Great Party = Tank Healer Healer Damage Damage Damage
you can sacrifice a healer for another Damage if there is no healers out there you can have and the party will still be good.

Exp Per Hour:
1000 -- Bad
2000 -- OK
3000 -- Good
4000 -- Great
5000+ -- Your party is Uber

Because of the parties 6 people you should fight IT and IT+, the party should be able to get at least 100 exp per kill.

~Back to Dunes~

DONT FORGET SIGNET BEFORE YOU LEAVE

to get to dunes..
Sand O'ria >> West Ronafure >> La thiene Plateau >> Valkurm Dunes
Bastok >> South Gustaburg >> North Gustaburg >> Konshtat Highlands >> Valkurm Dunes
Windurst >> East Sarutabaruta >> Tahrongi Canyon >> Buburimu Penninsula >> Mhuara >> Boat to Selbina (costs 100 gil) >> Selbina >> Valkurm Dunes

When traveling through these areas watch out for Mobs that Aggro, (Gobs , Orcs, Rams ( not sheep ), and Elementals(only agro to magic)And undead mobs ( ghosts/Skeletons))

Once you get to dunes...Make you way to the southern exit ( Konschtat Highlands Zone) but stay in dunes. Once again watch out for Goblins, and when traveling through the tunnel watch out for Bats

Stand nexto the conquest guy and seek for party : menu > party > Seek party....when someone /tells you Party? say yes and type /join once you see XXXX invites you to join his/her party, sometimes they wont /tell you so you should look for the XXXX invites you to join their party ( that is called a blind invtite)

Sometimes Blind invite's could be a good party.

Wait for a party invite than make sure it has th key elements..Tank Healer and Damage...one of the damage dealers should be a puller. A puller is someone who runs out and uses a ranged attack or Job Ability to bring a mob back to the party. the best pullers are Thieves and Rangers. thief only if it has a ranged attack.

Party here and get used to it, when you first start kill Hill Lizards. At about level 12 if you want, switch to Gobs. At 14 go to the beach and fight Clippers, until 15 or 16. Those levels you make your way to Bastok so you can fight in Korroloka Tunnel.

~Korroloka Tunnel~

Bastok Market >> Bastok Mines >> Zerhun Mines >> Korroloka Tunnel

Here you will fight worms, come here with your party, its somewhat hard to get one later but exp here is usually fast. Fight here until level 18-19

Make your way back to Valkurm so you can do your Selbina Subjob Quest

~Subjob Quest~

Get a party here and tell then you need the Sub job items...
Magiked Skull - Skeletons.
Crab Apron - Clippers
Damselfly Worm - Damselflies

once you have your items make your way to the middle of Valkurm ( SELBINA )

go to the right and down the stairs and talk to the guy in the corner, he will tell you a story of becoming stronger than the average jobs. trade him the items he asks for in order and you will now be able to have a subjob.

~Sub Jobs~
your subjob maxes at half of your regular job. So lets say your THF is 18 and your WAR is 10. when you use your WAR as your subjob it will be 18 Thief/9 Warrior. If your job is an odd number it will round your subjob down. Example 25 Warrior/ 12 Monk

Subjob Choices:
Thief : THF/WAR THF/MNK THF/NIN
Warrior : WAR/MNK WAR/NIN WAR/THF
White Mage : WHM/BLM WHM/RDM WHM/SMN
Black Mage: BLM/WHM BLM/RDM
Monk : MNK/WAR MNK/THF
Red Mage : RDM/WHM RDM/BLM

Please do not leave your subjob underleveled. Example 25 Warrior/9 Monk.

~Valkurm Dunes~

Dont bother walking back to Korroloka Tunnel, Level in dunes until 20. Fighting Beach Pugil's

~Journey to Jueno~

Leave dunes and head to La Thiene.
to Jueno :
La Thiene Plateau >> Jugner Forest >> Batallia Downs >> Upper Jueno
While Traveling through these places try to avoid aggro from goblins and tigers..also Orcs.

~Chocobo Quest~

When you get into upper Jueno set your homepoint.
Go straight and when you see an edge with chocobo's at the bottom go down the stairs and talk to the man under the hut. He will ask you about chocobo's and just respond logically to his questions.
Go straight out of where the chocobo's are (NOT UP THE STAIRS) and there should be some NPC's with a bunch of players around them..talk to one of them, this is the Upper Jueno AH. Go to Misc. and buy 4 Gausbit Grass. Walk over to the chocobo the boy is standing next to and 'Trade' the Gausbit Grass to it. It will deny it the first two times. You mush feed the chocobo four of these grasses. (Only can try once per Game day.) Once you have given the choco the last Gausbit Grass, talk to the guy under the hut again and he will give you your Chocobo License.

~Back to Leveling~

Go to Lower Jueno >> Port Jueno >> Qufim Isle

Once in Qufim, follow the tunnel until it opens up and seek for party nexto the conquest guy.

For the First few levels you will fight Worms. After that Clippers at the lake. Than Clippers at the tower, and maybey move on to Gobs inside the tower. Well Level here until about level 25.

~Kazham~

Head to Port Jeuno and talk to Guddal, who tells you that there are 2 ways to get the pass; pay 148,000 gil or give him 3 keys: Giddeus Chest Key, Ghelsba Chest Key, and Palborough Chest Key.
-Giddeus Chest key from Yagudo Priest, Yagudo Votary, and Yagudo Theolgist in Giddeus.
-Ghelsba Chest Key from Orcish Fighter, Orcish Serjeant, and Orcish Cursemaker in Yughott Grotto or Fort Ghelsba.
-Palborough Chest Key from Old Quadav, Brass Quadav, and Copper Quadav in Palborough Mines.
Return to Guddal and give him the keys he gives you a Airship Pass to Kazham.
Take the Airship to Khazam.
and Party outside of the city until level 30 or so...

In my experience levels 27-28 parties chocobo east to the second jungle to hit up the mandies there and eventually the gobs. Bring either a scroll of instant warp (750 Conquest points at gateguards in home city and jeuno), a 40+ BLM for Warp II or some means to invisible yourself. Without a warp or invisibility goblins will kill you on your way back to Kazham.

I really liked that you emphasized Signet's importance. Also, getting Rank 3, "killing the dragon," comes recommended at level 25 with a party of 5 or 6 level 20-25s. I started on my Kazham keys right after killing the Giddeus dragon near Windurst. Ask around in whatever town you're in whose dragon you're trying to kill, some people will help just for the title you get. ^^

Excellent guide, I couldn't think of a better first post. Cheers!

One correction: Utsusemi is a level 12 Ninjutsu spell; with a /nin sub you'd get it at level 24.

And now that the Chocobo Whistle is available, you can leave the way you got here, on the back of a chocobo, if you did the quest and have a pet bird.

Who the hell is going back 100+ pages to necropost this sh*t? lol.

[Edit: Sh*t, not that the guide is bad, just sh*t being used as a general term. The guide is actually fairly decent, but... outdated.]

Eh, the guide itself is pretty shitty as well. I guess it's sort of understandable when you consider how old it is, but it certainly doesn't deserve an Excellent rating. Some of the information it contains is pretty misleading.

I lol'd.

Despite the severe case of old this thread has, it's mostly still accurate aside from a few minor things.

It's actually kind of amusing to see that even way back then, things are still almost exactly the same as they are now. Same tanks, same old dunes, etc.
