A robot to press keyboard buttons against TOS?Follow

I am totally short on gil and didn't want to bot (I fish). So, out of pure intrest and bordom, I created a small lego machine out of the programmable lego things... It just presses Alt, 1 and enter for me, but is that against the TOS? It's not a 3rd party macro program.

Edit: spelling

ROFL!

It is against the TOS, and if a GM talks to you and you don't respond, you are the bunny ^^

EDIT: /ja <typo>

for building it out of lego, i say you should win a prize :D
please post a picture!

you can study or whatever with the computer screen in your peripheral vision, so don't worry about the unattended thing.

Would it be unattended if he was sitting there at his desk, doing what-the-hell-ever on FFXI as his lego machina presses Alt+1? Forgive me if I'm wrong, I tend to stay out of these botting discussions, so I don't know much about it. >.>

EDIT: By the way, I agree with everyone else: that's hilarious. Lego bots? Just pure, pure genius.

I can't imagine that being a problem. It might somehow technically still be against the ToS, but they couldn't do anything about it at all, nor would they try. If you're watching the screen and able to meaningfuly respond to people if they send you a tell or train you with a mob, nobody could fault you.

And, for the record, rate-up for an EXTREMELY funny solution to the problem, plus for having the guts to ask if it was kosher.

OMG! How geniously hilarious!!!
Thumbs up for you!

I think if you stay near your computer....it will be fine.
At least by using it you can have a few AFKs without fearing you'd let the fish go when it bites. I, myself, am also doing crazy fishing and I know the pain of it! Whenever I fish, I have to zoom in to the largest view (so any slight movement will looks BIG for me). I have to grab a pile of books or comics (and sometimes paper works) and put them on my desk and read them to kill my boredom while having the computer screen within my glance range....Then when my character starts tugging at the line, I would idly hit the enter button...

There were some times that I was reading too intently I forgot to look and lose a few fish an hour. >.<

Well, I think if you're using your genious Leho robot, it's not very different from my reading the book while fishing. It only have an extra advantage....you won't miss the time to hit the enter key lol!

By the way I don't think this is as against the TOS as the real fishing bot, at least it doesn't read the chat text and it doesn't act in response with the text that comes up.

AWESOME.

Rated up for sheer confidence in admission, let alone ingenuity.

Imagine seeing on ebay:

"Fishing LegoBot! Make ton of Gilz! Works with PS2 and PC! Plug and Play!"

What would be more funny seeing someone actually bid for it.

Okay, here's what you NEED to do:

Take a picture of your lego-bot. And show us. I swear to god, you will be immortalized at Allakhazam.

Doooo it. DOOO IT.

We desperately need a picture of this Lego Robot. It will cut through the meaningless miasma of our day with hope and wonder.

Also, I am not entirely sure it IS against the TOS, since it does not constitute unattended play if you are physically THERE. I am unaware of a passage in the TOS that requires you to use your physical body parts (fingers, I hope) to depress the keys on the keyboard. Clearly no macro program is being used here.

If you leave the machine, then it violates the TOS, but I think you could make a legit case for it otherwise. Besides, with all of the Fishbots out there that run for days without so much as a single /reply, I doubt you are in danger.

Unattended play is not the issue. If it was, people who leave their bazaars up would be agaist the ToS... unless they say Bazaars are the exception? I dunno, I don't read the thing. ^^ What is wrong is having something do something for you, but then again, things like LittleBroBot or the sort couldn't be used. Wait, I think they say its a 3rd party program! I doubt LegoBot would be against the ToS, unless they say 3rd party programs and machines. XD

GM "Order! Order! Vanadiel Court is now in session!"
SGM "What case do we have today?"
GM "We have taken a botter to custody and now is here to be judged, sir."
SGM "I see, bring in the accused. Do you have evidence against this individual?"
GM "Yes sir, we brought the tool he used to bot and thus broke the laws of our holy land."
SGM "What in the world is that thing?"
GM "Its the... um... bot, sir."
SGM "All I see is a toy in front of me GM, according to our laws, we forbid programs, not toys."
GM "But..."
SGM "No but, its the law. We have not power over toys and machines that can be used in our lands. Even if it is botting, there is nothing we can do againt a machine. I will bring this to the attention of the Supreme Vanadiel Court. But for now, the defendant is dismissed."
GM "Yes sir. Now come along you, let me teleport you to your homepoint."
Defendant "Yay!"
SGM "Computer programs... now machines? What is next? They will train their cat to bot? What is the world coming to... what have we unleashed!"

I don't believe you. It sounds like a story a young person would tell a GM after they got banned. I'd love to see some pictures that would change my mind ;p

hmm, but your not really playing when you are afk and have your bazaar up, either way.. If someone reports him as a botter, and a GM checks it out, but he doesn't answer, he will look like a bot, and if he got out of it by saying he used a lego-bot then thats just stupid because the GM has no way to know if thats true.

This reminds me of the Simsons episode where Homer is working from home and has a little bird (kind of reminds me of a Chocobo) that keeps hitting the 'Y' key for him.

Very classic Airlock ^^

I'm pretty sure if you take a picture of it, or manage a divx movie, you would be famous throughout all ffxi boards (jp, eu, NA, anywhere) ^^ ooor infamous, but fame is fame, yes?

The only problem would be is that if all it does is hit a button to start the fishing, and then hit enter, your chances of actually catching a fish are very very low. The fish would have to catch on the line within a very short time frame for the "lego-bot" to hit enter at the right time.

I'll probably get rated down for pointing that out and ruining everyone's fun, but oh well.

This can also be replicated with a gamepad. Just have it so that when yo upress a button, it hits a key combination to get you to start fishing, and then waits a certain time length, and then hits enter. Then just tape the button down on the gamepad.

The true goal would be to attach a light-sensing device to it so you could put it against your monitor to have it "read" the messages, so it knows when to hit enter. :)

I wouldn't worry about getting caught anyway. I have seen botters fish up mobs, get killed (by not fight it and STILL casting), then about 5 min later they come back to the same spot. But the funny thing is they take one step at a time and then stop, then step and stop. It's like they are trying to cast each time to see if they hit water. There were 3 people doing this on the cliffs in Sara and I tried to tell the GMs but they didn't care. I give up on trying to report bots. I say you'd not get in trouble. But you'd still be wrong.

VERY VERY VERY clever machine and I rated you up for it! :)
