Take Back the Boards.....Now or Never!Follow

#1 Oct 28 2004 at 12:31 PM Rating: Excellent
This is a call to arms for all serious posters exasperated with the decline in the FFXI Boards. Only we can improve and return the main board to its orginal state. Alla and the Admins agve us self moderation for a reason, so we could decide what we all want to see!
This will not be an easy battle. We have lost many great posters to the other forums, or from the boards entirely. The task is not hopeless. It will take dedication, and the risk of your karma at times.
Now I am not advocating that people not be allowed to post their comments or questions. In fact I am asking the opposite, post your legitamite questions and comments! The better for us all.
No what I am suggesting is really very easy.

1. Good posts, and solid players should be rated up! Even if it is all ready 5.00, a rate up helps the averages. Those of us that have been here longer will have to work a little harder to answer questions, and track down information.
Use the entire range of ratings at your disposal!

2. Trash threads, and repetative threads should be rated down, without responding so they do not get bumped. They will rapidly fall below the filter and off the first page.

3. We will not flame new players and posters for asking questions important to them, just post the answer and a link if possible.

4. Threads about petitions, gil sellers, and ultimatums to SE will be ignored!

5. Racial slurs, homosexual slams, and **** will be reported to the admins for nuking! ( Edited to clarify this comment!) Do not post in these threads, that just bumps then up again to the top of the page.

Now I know this won't solve everything, but it will be a start! So if you are up to the battle, and care about the boards. Join us in this war on idiots and trash!

It's not often that I find a thread that I do want to rate up, but I would do it to this one if I could lol.

EDIT: I take that back, though it was a surprising revelation, the last part that is.

I agree completly, I lost my scholar status to flamers and would like to feel like good posts will be viewed as such, and not be afraid to post a normal comment at the risk of being rated down by jerks.

Like any good Ranger, I've been conducting my own covert guerilla warfare using these same criteria. But I'm more than happy to throw my voice in with everyone else.

I fully agree with this, I rate up waaaaay more than I rate dwon, let others discipline, I prefer to award good effort.

By repetative threads, you mean we should ignore all new people who post a question thats allready been asked? I see rule #3, however, old threads get pushed pretty far back, then someone has a question about BCNM?

I know repetition is booring to people who have been here a long time, but there are lots of new people all the time who will find these topics new and exciting. What I think needs to be stopped is the constant first posts about beating a dead horse, if you dont like it, dont read it it's that simple.

Also, we are going to ignore anyone who is aggrivated with the game?

I dont know about you but when I see a petition, or gil selling rant, it lets me know others feel just as angry as I do sometimes, this is a hard game to play, and often when people rant, it's not because they hate the game, but because they enjoy it so much it makes them emotional.

Not to mention, we have the ability to comfort someone who comes to these threads with a problem or rant, instead they leave more angry because the majority of the FFXI community like to bash people who arent positive. Me on the other hand, I prefer to help.

And often enough, I've seen a gil sellers thread turn humorous, informative, and entertaining. Even though everyone choses to rate down the thread regardless of organization, content, or clarity, because it is a Gil Sellers thread.

That in my opinion is the larger problem, people exercise their ability to rate into oblivion without thinking about the person behind the PC who actualy cares, instead of exercising their ability of choice. The choice to ignore it.

I fully agree.

I don't see all the problems everyone else sees. Aside from people being too eager to rate down instead of up, and all the "Veterans" who feel they cant be burdoned by a rant or repetative thread on their prescious FFXI forum, things seem to be working well.

Another good thing to do is bump good threads. A lot of threads are great, but because of their nature don't get posted on and fall behind.

Information threads are better if the information is complete and correct. If it is, the only thing left to post is "thanks for the info" and "bump". Most people who read these threads don't post.

There are other good threads with stories and discussions and such that get posted on once in a while, but not always enough to keep them on the first page.

Stupid threads where people say "I'm quitting blah" or "this part of the game sucks" get lots of posts. Everyone either agrees with the person or tells them to STFU. These threads fade away soon, but there are many of them. Many short threads means cluttered first page.

So in conclusion:
1. Bump good threads
2. Dont post on bad threads just to say they are stupid. Let them fade away into obscurity

Also, I have a question. Does the rating system do anything other than show you how much people like/dislike the poster? (ie. does it affect thread order or deletion?)
#17 Oct 28 2004 at 1:00 PM Rating: Excellent
Sing.... No. I never meant new players, and I am glad you clarified that. For an example I am basically talking about the 4 post for gil sellers on the first two pages.

As for people unhappy with the game, we should try and help them if we can. Maybe there unhappiness is something that support or info would improve.

Most of you know me by now, I would never advocate being mean or nasty to new players, or those frustrated by the game. No our target should be the posters that post just to stir the ****, or make others unhappy with nasty responses. My whole point is that we outnumber them, and can rate them into oblivion returniung the main board with some work to its former friendly place.

Rate good threads up, and bump them if needed!

I have been hiding in user forums and the Fairy server forum since the main board had become mired in name calling, trolling and karma-camping. I would like to see more than 4 or 5 threads that I am willing to read on the first page. So I will join in this quest to return the main board to it's former glory. We must stand against the army of darkness.

In theory, it give an idea of the quality of posts, and you can change your filter.
In action, it's people who like you (or agree with your point of view) rating you up and people who dislike you (or disagree with your point of view) rating you down.

In theory, to get higher ratings, post well-constructed arguments, address all points af discussion, admit defeat when incorrect, respect other people's opinions.
In action, agree with everyone else, or if that isn't possible, the majjority of people.

Sad really. It's a great system conceptually, but it becomes a popularity contest. That's why I stopped watching almost all reality TV, but that's another topic altogether.

Prediction: I will be rated up by those who feel the same about the system and rated down by everyone else.

True. Some people will say "I don't like this" and people can encourage them to hang in there and be patient or offer suggestions (blah is boring -> join a linkshell).

I was referring to the more negative ones where the person seems to have made up their mind about quitting and has a bulleted list of reasons why. Seeing "Why I Am Quitting FFXI" at the top of the board for all of the 2nd week I was playing this game was kind of depressing.

Hmm...I seem to keep getting rated down. Meh.

One more question...I dont plan on doing it often, but how do I rate people? I see a drop-down, but nowhere to submit.

The way to go about this is to use the karma system as it was intended;

every post you read, rate it. Don't just use awful or excellent but use all the ratings, if a post deserves to be 5.00 rate it excellent, if it deserves to be 4.00 rate it good, if it deserves to be 3.00 rate it decent and so on.

The board being used proparly will filter the rubbish and good posters wil shine, also change your filters to default and

Don't Feed The Fucking Trolls!

You have to be above a certain threshhold to be able to rate.

Essentially:

Karma between 3.01 and 3.65 = scholar. Posts are in yellow.
Karma between 3.66 and 4.34 = sage. Posts are in green.
Karma between 4.35 and 5 = guru. Posts are in red

If you are any of the above, you can rate.

You do realize that it's when people blindly rate up every response in a thread like this, the sock puppets (and rate bots) also get rated up too right?

It's not a good idea to just rate everyone up for no reason, it's just as bad as rating everyone down for no reason. Karma boosting threads are just as bad.

That said, I do agree with the poster though.

I am with you on this.

I believe that you cannot submit posts for rating unless tou have Schollar, or higher status.
