People are always asking how to make the ASCII symbols in FFXI, so I decided to post how.

Here is a brief overview:
Q: How do I generate extended ASCII characters from the keyboard?
A: DOS will allow you to enter extended ASCII characters into many programs. Here's how you do it:

Make sure NumLock is enabled on your keyboard.
Press and hold the ALT key.
While holding down the ALT key, enter the 3-digit decimal code for the extended ASCII character you want to generate.
Release the ALT key.

Here is a website that explains it for you and has a chart ->http://www.jimprice.com/jim-asc.htm

Edit: Because of the way some codes are interpreted, you may need 4 digits (counting the leading zero). For example, try this:

ALT+ 157
ALT+ 165
ALT+ 0165

Notice how 157 and 0165 are the same, 165 is actually showing the correct character. I think this is dependant on the font you're using and the BIOS. Not sure really..

For some reason, I had to put a 0 digit in front of my 3 digit codes to get any of the cool symbols. Theres a difference with and without the 0.

Use a leading zero, for example the @ symbol = 64 decimal, but you must type 064 while holding ALT.

Something I wanted to add to thise great post.

Use the Charmap feature of windows to examine your computer's codes. It will help you to figure out what to use. My computer at home I use the Alt commands, but at work it's totally different.

Start » Run » Charmap

Also for you people who don't want to learn the ##s but just want to dabble, you can copy and paste from the charmap by pointing and clicking.

EDIT:

Erhm... I guess not all symbols are supported through the web browser?

I noticed the ¥¥ works but the pretty butterflies ж and Ж do not. ».«

Rate up for releasing this info, Ive been playing with this for some time.. but there are icons that I want to use with no ascii code assigned to them.. like the TM and happy faces and many others.

I have been trying to research a .dat editor that I could possible use to edit my macros inside of windows, so I could essentially copy and paste the icons in. I was able to open the macro files with wordpad, but when it goes to save. It of course tried to convert it to text and In game the macros become blank for that palette set.

I have also tried editing in DOS, but unfortunaly im not able to copy from windows and paste into a dos window.

Any tips or programs out there to edit the .dat? ^-^

LOL I can just see it now! /ja "Charm" | /p (Charm)☺ <t> ☻(Pet) ô♫

EDIT * -_- .. i see that some just dont work even here.. lol!

The registered trademark symbol ® for instance is ALt + 0174, but it depends on the font.
