Well, this may be a bit long winded, so bear with me.

I was sitting in Lower Jeuno LFG today after I became tired of farming. There wasn't anything coming my way in terms of invites, I just sat around BSing with my LS mates. After a while, I heard a /shout for a Promyvion - Dem party, so I figured what the hell... Might as well give it a shot. I have never had the impression that MNK is really in high-demand for Promyvion runs, but I've been dying to do them for a long time.

So, I sent a /tell to the person in question who was organizing the alliance. /t <name omitted> {Promyvion - Dem} MNK/WAR {I'm Interested}. A few moments passed, and I recieved a /tell back.

"MNK/WAR is completely useless, {No Thanks}."

Now, ultimately, I understand it's his party and I don't hold a grudge if he didn't have space for me. But I found it incredibly rude to tell me I was completely useless... I mean, is that kind of response really necessary?

I keep my equipment up to date, and I consider myself an exemplary Monk for my level. Are the missions really tailored to favor certain jobs? Or is this just an established mentality concerning the Promyvion's? Barring Jelly-type mobs, Elementals and the like, I would like to think I'm a rather effective DD.

But since I've never done the Promyvion's, I really can't say if I'm in the wrong by assuming I have a place there. Quite frankly, I'm not interested in having to level another job to do these missions right now, so what I'm wondering is... Should I even bother trying to get these done?

No. The idea that Monks are useless in Promyvion is just another one of these strange misconceptions that people hear and assume are true.

*shrugs* They can shove it, for all I care.
Someday they'll be on the recieving end of Asuran Fists when they go up against Maat.

However, if you intend on tagging along with somene else's organized Promyvion run, consider haveing other level 30 jobs available.

P.S. I hear PLDs get no respect there either.

The "holy perfect party of doom and oblivion" for Promevyon (im no expert...something like war/nin + war/nin + smn/whm + whm/blm + rng/nin + rng/nin or something along that line?) is only required to fill in for other holes...

requirements for promevyon from what I understand:

    1) organisation
    2) more organisation
    3) large ammounts of consumables
    4) rng, smn, war/nin, whatever
    5) great gears.
    6) animas

You need a bunch of these requirements, but you dont need ALL of them. Actualy...none of them (even the organisation...though that one is harder to drop ) are completly required. Usualy random pick up parties will be lacking 1) and 2)...so then they need 3, 4, 5, and 6 to make it alive. If you have 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, then #4 isn't needed...

you get the idea. People who say that you NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED the "holy party" usualy dont even know that #1, #2 and #6 exist...

    Hello,

I did a promyvion-holla run as a monk, and I can say that there are 3 things that you need definitely. You need a whm, smn, and rng. Everything else is DD, and I got lucky joining one, showed how much more damage I did compared to everyone else, and still made it to the BC.

We got the boss down 1/4 life left and he got his AOE off before we could have popped our poison potions. So we did miserably after that. I'll still go back but need to setup a party to do it.

I would even take 3 monks , a smn, whm, and rng. All in all we monks still do good damage at lvl 30.

Which is better Hundred Fists or Mighty Strikes???

MNKs are great damage dealers - all of the Promyvion mobs are weak to hand-to-hand. Basically the guy was just looking for a cookie-cutter group.

i've done all 3 promy's. The only time RNG/BLM are necessary is for the orbs and GETTING to the last fight. For the boss mob you want a normal PT, Tank, healers, support and DD. doesn't matter what DD just that they know what they are doing.

They have some AOE's and it's nice if the frontline can take hits well.

I would accept a monk into mine if i had to do them again.

When I did Promyvion-Dem, we were stuck with no RNGs (the two other parties in the alliance snatched them). Looked pretty bad for us.
    We had WAR/NIN, BLM/WHM, BLM/WHM, WHM/BLM, DRG/WAR and MNK/WAR.
Halfway through the BCNM, things were looking pretty bad. We were close to out of MP, my shadows weren't coming up fast enough, and I was in the single digits of HP.
Then the MNK uses Hundred Fists. Within the next 30 seconds, we had won. I didn't even realize it happened.

Saying that MNKs are useless in Promyvion is idiotic.

The only problem with monks in Promyvion is if you're planning on using Terroanimas, as they cause the mob to run around and make it rather difficult to do melee damage.

Overall, though, monk would be very high on my list of jobs to invite to a promyvion run if I were to do them again. {Hundred Fists} {Can I have it?} ^^

All in all, every class has it's uses in the BCNMs that aren't kited (Which will eliminate a THF). You can actually keep hitting it in regular melee while kiting, just not SATA. Just make sure everyone's got their Hi-Pots, their Anima, and all that.

The only Promovyian I've attempted so far (Dem), I went as MNK/WAR. We got to the final boss, no problem, but things fell apart after that and we got wiped out (RNG attacked while WHM was at 67% MP, forgot to bring anything but Sleep Bolts, and no one in my party had any clue what to expect).

Bottom line? MNKs are fine, and in fact their 2-hour is an amazing way of getting past the last 25% of the boss's health when it goes nuts. It's also perfectly possible to melee the memory receptacles now, so MNKs are great for killing them quickly as well.

We did the Holla with two teams. BlmRdm X2, Whm, Rng, Nin, Pld basic make up. We all made it to the BC. 1st team went in with taru Whm and Rdm. We went in with Hume NIN/RNG/WHM/PLD/BLM/RDM. We all died. They made it. Next time I am going as Monk instead of RNG and will ask for Whm/blm/rng/mnk-war and whatever, preferably another healer. We had him down low, but his aoe kept me (Rng) an the NIN slept. WHM was unable to keep us going. Ran out of mp. Whm was the last to die tho.. Tanks that can dole out some Damage much preferable to the Pld. PLD can hold the hate just fine, but damage is number one priority.

One of the ones that I played as mnk I won. It was a hard fought win, and I would't have taken a mnk to any of the others because of the strategy used... but personally my opinion of these is that most of the bosses need to be kited for thie win, so most DD classes are useless. Dem was the only one that my group didn't attempt to kite. The other ones for the win our setup was WHM/NIN WAR/NIN RNG/NIN BLM SMN RDM(me) and the strategy we used was to have the war kite the mob not even attacking it just voking and running back and forth with it while I cast gravity and paralyze and other debuffs on it.

MNK is a sick damage dealer, I have no idea why everyone and their mother doesn't love them by now.

Job Classes do not matter in promyvion, it's all in the medicine

as long as you have a tank (who can hold aggro) that has 7-15 hi pots, healers with mp regen drinks and 3-5 ethers, the BCNM's are retardedly easy.

Monk is a nice DD, but face it, the destructive power of a good ranger is unmatched. The Promyvion fights are some of the harder fights in the game, especially Holla. Because of the high difficult level, you don't really want a "nice DD", you want the "best DD". Plus, ranger has widescan for detecting memory recepticles.

A thief would also deal good damage at L30, but you don't really want to stick so much hate on one person in these fights. The best tanking method I believe is having 2x WAR/NIN who bounce hate. If you SATA on one, he/she will almost surely die pretty quickly.

SMN is preferred over MNK because in addition to an amazing 2H, they can operate as healers.

    I'd say the optimal setup for the L30 Promyvions is 2x WAR/NIN, 2x RNG/NIN, WHM/SMN, SMN/WHM.

The mentality of "Promyvion is RNG/BLM ONLY" is probably the reason why SE had to allegedly nerf it. Perhaps not because it was ungodly hard, but because people had found one way (which I will not contest is an effective way..but then again, throw a bunch of RNGs at anything except a bone mob and well..) to finish it and were completely unwilling to try any other way.

Let's face it. From what we see many of the people who play FFXI are powergamers (must have the absolute best, ideal set ups, settle for no less -- not that standards are a bad thing..) or people with time constraints who can ill afford bad set ups.

Thus as a result, throw a class like THF or MNK (or even PLD) from what I hear in Promy and everyone freaks. Kudos to them for wanting to wait for an ideal set-up for Promy, I wish them the best of luck. In the meantime, I'll laugh when I see the same individuals still LFG for it 2 weeks later.
