I Have a DreamFollow

#1 May 16 2005 at 10:15 PM Rating: Excellent
I have a dream that one day Vana'Diel will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all jobs should be equal."

I have a dream that one day on the rolling hills of Altepa the sons of former Dragoons and the sons of former Rangers will be able to party together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Windurst, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of party invites.

I have a dream that my four low level Monk Theif Dragoon and Samurai friends will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their AF Armor but by the skill of their gameplay.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day, down in Bikbi Bay, with its vicious Goblins, with the Black Mages having their lips dripping with the words of gimped and do not invite; one day right there in Bikbi Bay, Large Elvaan Samurai's will be able to join hands with little Taru Black Mages as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every valley of sorrows shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of Altana shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

This is our hope. This is the faith that I go back to LFP in Jueno with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our game into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to party together, to quest together, to struggle against beastmen together, to call GM's together, to stand up for job adjustments together, knowing that we will all be equal one day.

This will be the day when all of Altana's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "My FFXI, 'tis of thee, sweet Game of excellency, of thee I sing. Land where my LS leader died, land of the pre-zilart's pride, from every Leveling Area, let freedom ring."

And if FFXI is to be a great game this must become true. So let freedom ring from the tangled webs of Crawlers Nest. Let freedom ring from the great caverns of Gustav Tunnel. Let freedom ring from the mighty halls of King Ranperres Tomb!

Let Missions be completed at the snowcapped Rockies of Beaucadine Glacier!

Let great spells fire among the mighty branches of Boyhda Tree!

But not only that; let parties join in the Stone Passageways of Kuftal Tunnel!

Let fun ring from the lookout tower of Cape Terrigan!

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Elshimo Island. From every mountainside, let EXP flow.

And when this happens, When we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every town and every Outpost, from every Outland and every Kingdom, we will be able to speed up that day when all of Altana's children children, Melee's and Magic Users, Dragoons and Samurai, Paladins and Dark Knights, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Galkan spiritual, "Fun at last! fun at last! thank Altana Almighty, we are all having fun at last!"

----------------------------------

part of me feels really bad about desecrating one of the most moving speeches in History, but i hope you all will take it for what it is, a psuedo joke trying to make everyone sorta look at the party system of the game, but also to realize that indeed it is just a game, and its supposed to be fun, so try to do whatever you can to try and make it fun for everyone, regardless of whether they are a n00b or not, whatever job they may be, we should try to make it fun for all!!!!

EDIT: Sorry bout spamming the job boards that was kinda silly...

I did a speech on MLK, and read the "I Have A Dream" speech.

I can tell the similarities of the two speeches instantly upon reading, yet see it pertaining to FFXI very well. You did good man. Rate up.

(I'd love to link to this in my Sig if I may ^^).

Edit: Now that I think about it this is quite controversial and though I'm not offended by it I can see how other people might be. And seriously... spamming it on every job forum? Just no.

Well Done Friend! I wish I had your skill. Glad to see that someone out there still views the game as it should be seen. To many eyes are blinded by greed. So sad. I feel bad for those people. Wish they would all just play WoW instead.

Edit- typo.

Um... rate down. I find this really disrespectful of both Doctor Martin Luther King's personal work to increase civil rights for the black community as well as the democratic ideals his speech was meant to stand for. Tasteless :(

You're entitled to your opinion, so I won't rate you down, even though I disagree. I don't see how this is disrespectful at all. He was obviously moved by the original speech and rewrote it with a FFXI twist. His revision preaches against discrimination by job/race, and thus I see it not as a disrespectful abomination, but rather as a revision intended to both honor the original speech made by MLK and his ideals and to bring people together in Vana'Diel.

You have a valid point and honestly that was my first impression. Then I started thinking about it. How do you think Mr. King would feel? Living in the 40s, 50s and Dying in 1968, Mr. King never lived to see the changes that have been made because of his life.

Before "I Have a Dream" was there ever seen a speech from a black man quoted so often? Was there ever a black man given as much respect as Mr. King? Did a nation ever change as much on the words of a black man? Sadly, the answer is no.

Not sad because Mr. King changed the world, but sad that it took so long. I would argue that the fact that a - assumed - white person is using Mr. King's speech as a template for a speech on here is truly a testament to the impact of Mr. King. If he has used the Emancipation Proclamation as his template, would it elicit the same passion? How about the Sermon on the Mount? Can you think of another speech that has touched so many?

IMO, Mr. King's message - and that speech - transcends humanity's efforts to use it as a joke. The fact that a black man's speech is one of the most recognized speeches in US history is enough. It makes me happy. And, to me, it in no way could ever denigrate the work of Mr. King. While I cannot speak for him, I don't think Mr. King would disagree.

But, that is my opinion. Obviously we may disagree and that is ok. Neither of us will go to jail or be hung for it. Thank Mr. King - and many others before him - for that.

*Edit for spelling

i suppose you never thought how racist your online world is either eh? People not associating with certain others because of the job they happen to be, or hating because of a certain subjob, which is bs. (like everybody hating all NON-war/nin for example)

it needs to change drastically indeed

The difference is that IRL someone's race has nothing to do with how well they perform, but in-game race and job/subjob do. A RDM/DRG can work, just not nearly as well as RDM/BLM. Some job/subjob combos aren't accepted because they simply do not offer as much as other combos.

This is just terrible. I appreciate the message you are giving dude, but this is unoriginal by modifying words in MLK's speech, and even worse, you're 2 stones short of pissing on his grave by changing a meaningful speech to something about a game. For shame man, for shame...

I appreciate the fact that some of you understand where I'm coming from, even if you don't necessarily agree with me. The recycling of MLK's words may have parallels in Vana'diel, but it is a terrible trivialization of his purpose. To claim that the "community" in FFXI is anything more than an imperfect shadow play of real life relationships - and subject in some form to the same consequences and outcomes of racism as real life is - is seriously flawed.

Sorry to say, but you remind me of those useless protesters I saw in TImes Square the other day protesting bees. Yes bees that make honey. Useless isn't it? Go find something else to do, be it in game or outside. Protests don't achieve much in the short run.

I agree that this thread kinda trivializes the civil rights movement that took place during the 60s. Comparing a video game to actual racial discrimination is a bit of a stretch. But I don't think the OP was in bad taste and it's pretty silly to get offended over it.

The point of this was not to **** on MLK's grave, or disrespect him at all if you read the end i was worried that that's what it might be taken as, and it's really not. The point is to show the paralells and realize how absurd some of the game is in a way. MLK is one of my greatest hero's, yes i am white to answer the asumption, but the idea was not to trivialize him or his message AT ALL, anyone who took it that way or as a defimation to the civil rights movement you have my personal and sincerest apology. If you read the last part you will notice my caution in doing so.

The reason i chose to do this in this format is because it would draw more attention to the topic, and make people think a bit more. Yeah it is just a game, but alot of us, myself included, take it way too seriously sometimes(perhaps some of you will use this as an example of that...still missing my point), and this was a way to try to point that out to everyone. So, enjoy it please as what it is. I suppose that quotes from one of the job forums, have to go check it and apologize.
