Oct 3: If anyone can tell me why all the links I just tried to add for the videos are no good... speak up!

Well everyone, here it is. I decided (against my better judgment) to take the onus of maintaining and updating the venerable Video Library myself. For the time being this thread is a data-dump/trainwreck, eventually it will be everything a thread should be.

I must of course give credit to my Video Library forbearers: King Karg and XvexodusxV. I came on this site back when it was "Karg's Video Library" and the bumpy tale of that thread is quite a venerable one. I will now reluctantly take up the torch. I commit at to maintaining and updating this thread once a week, and no more.

Feel free to add your suggestions, links, comments, ideas thoughts and encouragement to the thread. Though I am not currently registered you'll soon find me back on Fairy server- say "hi" sometime and we'll game. I hope to sign back up in October.

This will be a work in progress, I have gone through Exodus' thread piece by piece and downloaded every video that was still good. There wasn't much fight left in the old thread. Below you will find the remains.

TO VIEW A VIDEO:

Right click on a link, select "Save Target As" and download the video to your computer. You can watch it all you like from there.

Left clicking directly (streaming) the video wastes bandwidth and ruins this for everyone.

Most of these videos require a codec. If your favorite media player tells you it needs one, I recommend the following:

Thank-you Ilee. I would rate this "good." Excellent basic ideas and examples- but nothing more than that. I was also not sure I even wanted to link to this, frankly, since he actively advocates illegally obtaining software and defrauding people who deserve your support for their hard-work. If anyone knows of other vid making guides, please post/PM.

You will rarely find this quality of writing and detail in a forum. Easily "excellent" quality content and text. I can't say much more, it has to speak for itself.

Here's what you can do to help and contribute:

#1: HELP ME FIND A HOSTING SERVICE.

My ultimate preferences for this system would be that it is:

#1- Permanent. Expired links, over-taxed bandwidth and video death are the enemy. All things change in time- but a hosting system that will outlive any thread editor is key.

#2- Legal. Taking something like this on inevitably means grappling with copy-right and legality issues. I think that any video that records FFXI is probably a copyright infringment... but let's avoid what we can, shall we? Any free and good legal advice?

#3- Universal. All videos will be available there, from a single source. This will not be completely possible of course.

#4- Free. Duh- no one wants to pay for their XI videos.

My ideas thus far:

CONS: Terrible first-time user interface for downloading (uploading is fine). Ugly, clunky and designed to make you look at their ads.

PROS: Huge and well-established. Likely as permanent as it gets. It will function independently of me, you or anyone (many XI vids are in there already I've no doubt).

CONS: I think I may be required to maintain it... but perhaps I could simply pass my acount and password to someone when the time comes. They want to stick to copyright law (things will likely slip under their radar though). Videos must be at least 10 seconds long. If things get too much bandwidth, Google could make you pay...

PROS: Google ain't going anywhere, everything else they have made is the best of the best.

If I decide to go with a host that requires my personal attention and updates- I ask that all videos be sent/refered to me for ease of maintenance.

#2: REFER ME TO THREADS/SITES WITH VIDEOS

If you've got 'em, post here about what you have. If you know of good sites with videos and pics, post. If you make a good video, post.

#3: MAKE AND POST QUALITY VIDEOS!!

Easily understood. We want more! Gain fame and fortune by making cool stuff and showing to your fellow players!

I know this was buried at the bottom of my response to Deadgye, so I'll say it again.

DO NOT START UPLOADING VIDEOS ANYWHERE JUST YET!

I am not sure exactly what sort of upload/download client I want to use. Advice is welcome. I also need some permissions from various authors, and some copy-right type info. Wait for an official decision from me about what to use and then get to work. (PM me with the addresses of stuff you ahve already uploaded however).
