FFXI was my first Pay-to-Play MMORPG (not my first though, Maple Story, RoseON, and Runescape graced my presence beforehand ><;), so I was a bit nervous with it all.

My first day, I spent six hours downloading and installing the massive update, and hating every minute of it. By the time it was all done, I had about an hours worth of playtime before I passed out on my bed.

I created an Elvaan Thief in Bastok, with the long, rough looking black hair face, named "Korro", after "Korro Te'Deurshon", a thief I had played as in the D&D Sessions at Games Club after school.

He lasted no more than that hour. I quickly deleted him because I didn't like Bastok, and I couldn't find my way outside (nor did I know how to equip that butter knife they gave me as a starter weapon).

The next day I started anew, and created a Hume, The Semi-Long Red Haired Face, Red Mage in San d'Oria, the original Avelyn, named after one of the main characters in R.A. Salvatore's Demon Wars books. I solo levelled my way to 10 over the period of two weeks, with nothing but my starter sword, Dia, what few spells I got on the way (Cure, Stone, and Protect), and that ugly Bronze Harness set (which I replaced with leather as soon as I reached 7, kept the Bronze Cap though, liked the way it looked).

With that one, I remember walking out of Ronfaure, and seeing my first orc, trying to kill it, and watch it utterly humiliate me. Then, I vowed to never move on in that game until that bloody orc died to my blade.

It finally happened at Lv. 7, and I was so happy with it (and happy that I could go on and fight harder mobs).

About Lv. 9, I figured out what the AH was, and decided I wanted to level a craft. First I tried Smithing...

...then I saw the prices for Fire Crystals on the AH (which were a lot to me at the time), and decided I'd probably make better money having a tea party with the orc population of Ronfaure.

So, I did a few quests, the first Sandy mission, and eventually managed to get myself a rod and some bait (lugworms ><;). I decided I'd try to go fishing in Ronfaure at the stream...

I fished up more than my fair share of monsters doing that, and after dying to them...several times...I quit fishing, and deleted that version of Avelyn, since I didn't even know I could switch classes at moments notice in your Mog House, and recreated the current Avelyn in Bastok (since I heard you would get this really useful ring if you created a Hume there).

I had better experience with my third character, this time a Monk, and made it through Gustaberg quickly. Eventually I got to my first party in Highlands, a duo with another low level, subjobless Monk, and we roamed Highlands like we were the greatest monster hunters in the game.

Eventually we went to where the sheep spawned, took one (count it, one, uno...one...sheep), and a Ram popped, literally right behind us. My MNK friend screamed in panic, and then the Ram two shotted him.

So, I followed suit, and did what I thought would be best to do in that situation...

Scream bloody murder in PT chat and run in circles around my fallen friend with the Ram chasing my *** and maming me ><

After that, I didn't pt for a long while, and fought worms in Highlands solo. Until, finally, I got a random PT invite from a party in Dunes. So I ran there as quick as I could.

The moment I zone in, I run right past a goblin (which didn't show up on my screen yet) and watched it cut me down in one swing. I was so embarrassed, I HP'd, disbanded, and logged.

Was another week before I had another PT in dunes, and that one wasn't so bad (no instant gob death), and from there, I just moved on and learned, explored all over (even went to Windy as a level 18, paying an escort 4k to get me through to the Canyon), and thats about it.

Ah the good old days...wide eyed and curious about everything, yet dumb as a rock! ^^

It took me about a week to figure out that you could rest to restore HP, lol. I would make a 15 minute trip back to my Mog houe every time I was low on HP.

This was my first and only MMORPG so I went into the game knowing absolutely nothing. A few of my friends picked it up as well, but they were just as clueless. I didn't know there was such a thing as Vendors so I bought everything from the AH (what little I could afford). I also didn't know you could rest to get HP and MP back, so whenever it was low I would run back to the MH.

the party wouldnt let me tank cus they said a paladin is better, well being a noob i kept wondering "what makes him so much better than me?!?" and getting jealous

I watched my boyfriend play for a while, so I knew the jist of the game.

When he first started, though, I remember seeing in his text, while he was playing: "Wild hare hits wild hare for 5 dmg" or something like that. I said to my boyfriend, "Oh my god, someone's name is 'Wild hare'! That's funny." Then later I found out it was just a BST's pet fighting. Lol.

When I first made my character, I decided I wanted to be a monk. So I created Ikuei, and started in Windy because the elves seemed rude and Bastok just looked dirty. I went outside and started beating on bees, marveling at how much damage I did. Someone sent me a tell, saying, "Why don't you put your sword on?" I laughed, and replied (slowly, because I hadn't bought a USB keyboard for my PS2 yet) "I can't wear a sword, I'm a..."
Warrior.

*****.

Interestingly enough, I didn't go change into MNK, even though I knew I could. I stuck with warrior and absolutely loved it. In fact, when I picked a job to mess around with at 40WAR, I picked RDM since it seemed a lot like warrior. I died in Sarutabaruta, and homepointed, thinking my hp was in Jeuno, as usual.

Wrong.

Where was my hp, you might ask? Beaucedine Glacier. An ill fated party attempt had occurred up there, and I had set my hp, not even thinking. A half naked 05RDM/02WAR with a hp in the glacier, and no way to get out. I ended up sitting in the middle of the road near the Xarcabard zone, with a search and bazaar comment that read:

{Help me out!}
{Beaucedine Glacier} {Impossible to Gauge}
05 {Red Mage} {Too weak}

Cailleach, a 75RDM in our LS, walked up to the glacier and teleported me to Holla, then realized she couldn't leave me at the crag because I'd still die. She tried to invis me, which lasted all of three seconds, and proceeded to inform me that if I died she'd warp home, change to /BLM, and tractor my *** to Sandy. XD Good times!

(Sorry if there's a double post... Verizon sucks.)

My first newbish experience was ight after I created my charecter I followed soomeone into a shop and then couldnt get back out. I didn't know how to open the door. So I ended up deleting the charecter and starting the one I have now. Although this time I didnt go into any shope until I could figure out how to open the doors.

Another moment was going out to fight for the first time and getting killed by a rabbit because I didn't have my weapon equiped. Why is it that all your clothing comes equiped but not your weapon? Had a laugh over that.

I tend to be the kind of person who doesn't read instructions at all, just jump into a game..

It took me a little bit to figure out how to even make my character move.

I remember one time I died, was just sulking, it took me a long time to run that far... then a nice person raised me... I was ready to call a gm because of 'weakened status'

It was by sheer luck, I managed to get Signet before heading out of town for the first time.

It took me a while to realize you could 'stack' items, I was getting annoyed at all those stupid crystals taking up all my space.

Now I get annoyed because items don't autostack >.<

Ahh my favorite memory was back at level 14rdm.

Ive been seeing people shouting for Teleport-Holla in Southern Sandy, and i knew where that was.

So i shout for one, pay the gil, and whm teleports. I dont go anywhere. I see a "?" coming from the whm in the party.

I soon realize i need an item to go there... so i made the excuse that i forgot i was on my mule and didnt have the crystal XD great times...

I also remember forming a level 10 party in SS. We head out to the Dunes, reach level 12 or so, and decide to come back. Well in La Theine is the infamous Battering Ram. Our overzealous warrior, feeling invincible, vokes the ram. He runs to it sword drawn, the meantime us running AWAY. He dies, we dont.
