75 thief here, just wondering what to do, and what not to do with "Merit points". Any links to info on this topic will be appreciated.

It's totally open to you...you spend your merits how you want.

When using them for job specific abilities, the merits only apply to that job at 75. The basic stats (STR, INT, etc) stick to your character and scale on different jobs depending on the level.

Go to http://mysterytour.web.infoseek.co.jp/ffxi/us/ and click Tips -> Merit Points for a full explanation.

From what I know, alot of Thfs that are my friends worked on Critical Hate rate. Thfs already have high dex for more Criticals, not to mention some good Critical Hit+ gear. Very useful in fights against HNM/God when you are in. TP gain is hard for a Thf who hits for 0 most of the time ; ; With boost to critical hits you can gain TP faster, and on normal enemies do more damage.

Evasion is always great for solo/duo etc when a Thf will be tanking.

Marksmanship is another plus for soloing/duo etc.

Beyond that I would just advise the normal stuff such as...

Dagger Skill
Dex
Agi
Str

Not sure what the Job Specific merit changes there are for Thf, but I imagine there is something useful there.

Overall Merits help with

HNM/God
Solo/Duo etc.
Getting faster buffer EXP since you are better
You are considered sexy
Probably more

Not to mention they help with leveling a secondary job. For instance, I've upgraded my MP twice.. As a Galka, that extra 20 MP helps a lot. My base MP on Paladin (51) from from 80~ to 100~

..It's also silly to have a natural 20 MP as a 75MNK XD

I'd recommend you try to find merits that will benefit your next job. I took RNG to 75 and decided I wanted to do NIN next, so I have sunk merits into Evasion, Crit%, and STR. The effect of those merits on my NIN is enormous and it hasn't compromised my play as RNG at all.

You'll hear a lot of people telling you to sink your first merits into Crit %, but in my experience these just aren't as incredibly noticeable as combat skill merits. If you're pretty sure of what you want to do, skills first. The beauty of Crit % is that it works for all DD jobs and unless you decide to max out + or - enmity, you're never going to regret the merits you spent on it.

Mertis are wonderful whether you want to level up a second (or third, fourth, etc.) job, or try to make your main job really effective at end game events (ie HNMs and gods).

As a RDM main, I maxed out my enfeebling magic giving me a base enfeebling skill of + 15, as well as putting several points in Wind accuracy (which aid in landing silences and gravity). When Kirin time rolls around, I have very little trouble landing Gravity on him over and over again.

After a while, when it became apparent that my RDM skills were more than adequate, I started putting merits in other categories. % crit hit rate is one of the most popular in the "Other" category, because the only other desirable traits in that area are + or - enmity, which really messes things up if you're a tank who wants to try mage, or vice versa.

When I started levelling THF, just putting a single merit point in Dagger gave me access to Viper Bite at lvl 32 (as opposed to lvl 33, which is the normal level), allowing me to shock and awe the newbies with my damage output... at least during the very rare times they were able to line up properly for a SATA. ^^
