NEw players have a ? next to their head (to warn all of us lol). It goes away after a certain amount of time, or lvl 5 (i think 5 ).

I dont know which "Everyone" your speaking of. Mentors in game have an M next to their heads. This means they are willing to help people with questions problems ect. If your stuck on something try asking a mentor (though they likely wont have any clue how to help you).

If you die and a healer isnt around to raisr you, you are sent to your home point (the last place you made your home point, or default of your mog house when you first start).

'Its random, unless you have a world pass. If you want to play on the same server as your friend, you should ask them to get you a world pass, or else you will likely be on a different server.

The "?" that you see next to a characters name means that that person is a new and inexperienced player.

The "M" that you see next to some character names means that that person is a Mentor. Basically they are people that offer help and advice to those less experienced.

When you die you will automatically revive after one hour if you are not raised by a WHM (White Mage) or a high-level PLD (Paladin). Or you can simple choose to return to your home-point (i.e. your Mog house or a home point crystal).

And when you start a new character the server that you are placed on is random unless you have a "World Pass" for a specific server. Unless you have friends on a particular server though I wouldn't worry about that and just play on whichever server you are placed upon.

If by "?" and "M" you mean icons next to players names, the ? is default for new characters until a certain level or time has elapsed. It can be disabled in congif > help desk. The M means they are a Mentor, someone who has reached lvl 30 in at least one job and played a certain number of game hours and chosen to be marked as such. It is intended to be a way to recognize players who will be helpful to newer players; unfortunatly it is not regulated by SE in anyway and most of the mentors I have seen are asshats that use it as a status symbol. Funny when you realize the criteria is only lvl 30.

As for death (Baring you didn't use a reraising item/spell prior to death and the effect has not worn off)you can either wait for another player to raise you with a spell, (limited to WHM RDM or a job with either of those two jobs as sub at lvl 25+, or a 50+ PLD) or you can return to your Home Point. You can set your Home Point at various areas in the game including "safe" areas such as towns; or near the area you are XPing in. returning to Home Point gives a larger XP penalty than being raised; but being raise puts you into Weakend state for a set amount of time. Your HP/MP and other charater stats are reduced during this time.

As for server: I got onto Odin. I found friends there that I enjoy playing with. I'm sure other servers may have better economy, others may have worse. I'm happy where I am. That's all that matters to me.

Actually It's level 38 for RDM, and PLD lvl 50+ can also raise.

Your friend would need to purchase one (with gil, the in game currency), from a vendor that sells them. I dont recall off hand which vendors sell them, but they give you a #. You enter that # in when your registering, and it will get you to that server.
