I'm sure there are some of you that don't much care for Final Fantasy XI's musical score. Naoshi Mizuta's style is a little too ambient for my taste, and I prefer things to be livened up a lot more. I released an earlier version of this and posted about it on Allakhazam over two years ago, but I've long since updated it, replacing all the game's music for zones and combat themes, including the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion. Cutscene and character creation themes are untouched, as they're so rarely heard that it was pointless to replace them.

The replacement soundtrack spans four zip files, one for the core game, and one for each of the three expansions. Each zip file comes with some readme instructions. You may want to make a backup of your old .bgw files if you for some reason dislike what I've put together. You'll find all the files here.

For those of you that download it, enjoy. It breathes new life into the game.

This usually isn't my style, but quick bump for exposure, since I'm sure more people might be interested. I won't be bumping it again, I promise.

Mayhap a few previews of what we are getting before downloading them and applying them to our copy of ffxi?

Ask and ye shall receive. Here are a few samples I put together really quick.

Ru'Lude Gardens
Altepa Desert
Caedarva Mire
Outdoor Combat Music in Aht Urhgan Expansion

Ignore the distortion in the MP3s... Creative Wavestudio does a horrible job with encoding. The actual music pack that I made doesn't have that distortion, as I'm a quality freak and wouldn't tolerate it, heh.

I really like both of these. They both feel really ambient (expect for the ending of the Altepa Desert one) but it's a nice change.

These two guaranteed that I'm not going to download it... I've had way too much electric guitar in my rpgs after sitting through Star Ocean: 'Til the End of Time's terrible score that I couldn't bare to have FFXI like that. :(
Like, the Caedarva Mire song would've been sooo much better with other insturments in the background instead of an electric guitar just churning out power chords and stuff. The Outdoor Combat Music is kinda like ffvii's music, and I can understand the direction it (and Star Ocean) took with their music due to being more futuristic in setting, but FFXI is pretty medieval and I think would benefit from purely acoustic songs.

If they were all similar in style to the first two and had none like the second two, I'd definitley download it.

However, it does sound like put a lot of work and thought into this, which is great! :)

Well, the latter two songs are from Ys: Oath in Felghana which takes place in a medieval setting, but at any rate, I respect your opinion and understand that this set isn't for everyone. Since you do like some of the songs, you may want to download the replacement set anyways and pick and choose what you want to keep. There's a plugin for Winamp that lets you listen to .bgw files (do a search on Google) and you would be able to listen to everything prior to changing songs in your FFXI installation.

I'm going to agree with Plasma. While I recognize the source of many of these tunes, you've more or less killed the ambience of the world of Vana'diel (Particularly with the ToAU and CoP files) through focusing on fast-paced rock/metal tunes. They're also pretty loud recordings, which isn't exactly a bad thing, but it'll be easy to drown out sound effects without in-game tweaking.

I would still encourage people to download them, though. Either pick up the Winamp plug-in that lets you play the files directly or google how to convert FFXI's bgws to mp3s. From there, if FFXI's tunes still have you down, you can just open them all as a big playlist with no damage to your FFXI install.

I'm of the mindset that the FF franchise's music scores have been rather mediocre since 7. Before that, limiting to the SNES' MIDI format made me more tolerant of Nobuo's style, but it feels like he's been unable to escape it even to this day. Yes, I've heard the Black Mages play and even some of the symphonic renditions, and I find myself wondering why THOSE aren't in our games. I know it's not a system limitation.

I'd be curious to see what Yoko Kanno would do with an RPG soundtrack, myself.

Well I dowloaded the first one and have started listening to it. I really like your new Mhuara song and Sandy songs, so I think there will be some replacing going on ^^

Outdoor Combat Music in Aht Urhgan Expansion

I liked this one, it sounds fast paced and different from the music in the game. It sort of reminds me about the FFX-2 battle music and I did like it.

Hmm, I don't know. There are many tunes which I liked a lot during FFX or FFVII, I haven't played FFIX yet. However, the music in FFXI, I can hardly take it. An example of the music is: The CoP BCNM music. It's rather... psychopatic than andrealine pumping, the tunes in it are harsh. I don't like it and -especially- after doing and failing COP missions many times, I ended up with turning off the sound. The music in rolandberry fields, battallia downs, sauromouge campaign are dull, they feel like they were slapped in there just for making the area have music. I could go on with the list, but I prefer not. Most of the music in the game seems like a downgrade compared with FFX or older. There are some music that I do like in the game, the Sea, Sanctuary of Zitah, original FFXI party - battle music, COP dungeon music and Ru'Aun Gardens. I could also had gone through this list for a while too. What I have written is my opinion though. I haven't gotten through the music in TOAU yet, so I have no comment on that area.

Anyway, I'm downloading the rest of your files. I appreciate that someone tries to change the ingame music.

Not true at all. I spent time specifically adjusting the audio levels of each song, one at a time, so that they'd be at approximately the same db levels as the game's official recordings.

As far as Final Fantasy XI's ambience goes, destroying it was entirely the idea. As I said earlier, I do not care for Naoshi Mizuta's compositions used in the game. They make me want to fall asleep, heh...

personally, while there are some songs on FFXI that I really like, I usually just listen to my own music. I think I might take your stuff (and the tracks from the original soundtrack that I like) and just randomize it and play it along with the game.

Thanks for doing this. :)

By the way, where's the song you used for the Mog House theme (music126) from? it sounds really familiar and I remember liking it a lot.

Music126 is Disc 1, Track 7 from the Chrono Cross soundtrack. It's the music you hear in the map exploration screen after the first major event of the game happens.

I swapped out the battle tracks on my own, and what you picked for your Battle Theme #1 (Rogue Galaxy - Brave Heart) is what I've been using as my Battle Theme #2 for a week now. I like your taste in that regard. Using regular FF series battle music, though, doesn't seem to work as well in this game, since it gets played so often, and I'm sure we've all heard it before in playthroughs of the game it showed up in first. I especially disagree with the choice of the arranged FF8 battle theme for the boss battle music.

Your Rolanberry Fields replacement is identical to my Windurst replacement, as well. Maybe you have some hope after all.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying XI's soundtrack is perfect (far from it), but I can't really comfortably advocate these swaps as a perfect replacement, either. Maybe as an artist I hold some sort of belief in artistic integrity, but I don't expect everyone else to do the same.

Otherwise, all the recent FF games had a small handful of songs I could pick out and say I liked, but as a whole, many songs are forgettable and uninspiring. Funnily enough, I think IX is the worst offender, but so many people swear up and down that it's the best thing Uematsu's ever churned out. Then again, I actually liked X-2 as a whole, too.

Hm, rate up! I'm not a huge fan of much of the game music, especially all the Jeuno music. This looks like the perfect middle ground between having no music because some of it drives me crazy and having all the game music on because I like some of it!

I like custom soundtracks outside my game, in case SE decides to do a DAT check and see if I'm running any modified files.

Is there any way to convert these from BGW to MP3 without using XimC? XimC only works as long as the files are in your FFXI folder...

it does?

I converted .bgw files on a computer that didn't even have FFXI Installed on it with XimC and it worked 100% fine. Maybe you have an old version? (doubt it, since I think the "most current" one is kinda old...)

Anyway, listening to the samples, they sounded great. However, being on Ps2 I can't replace the music easily (and I am a fan of a lot of the music anyway). But, yeh, if I could nab use of a Windows comp I'd convert them to burn to a CD or playlist.

An interesting topic, if only it was up either a few weeks ago or in a few weeks -_-'

Right now my 'puter with my customized .bgw's is out of action. I'll be rebuilding my system in a few weeks once I get enough cash together. When that happens I'll work on making my customized list available.

By the way, JasonWalton, that Ru'lude Garden music you posted sounds familiar but I can't place it, where'd you use it from?

Winamp ".bgw" plugin here:

http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/486530-post89.html

Problem files:

FFXI - Original "Music900"
Zilart - Original "Music181"
ToAU - Original (All of these)

But most selfishly, once I figure out how to import my own mp3's -> bgw's, there are going to be more YTMND tracks in my custom of your custom soundtrack. Zip-zop-zoobledy-bop!

The tune for Ru'Lude Gardens is from the Record of Lodoss War OAV. It's the song that Deedlit plays on her lute with Parn when they're atop Valis Castle, entitled "Moonlight".

Ahhhhh... no wonder it sounded familiar

I used a different Lodoss track in my custom bgw's. I forget the title, but it's the track that starts with a stringed instrument and then switches to an accordian (sp). I put it in place of the Sanctuary of Zi'tah track.

could you post or PM the battle music from the regular game, and first two expansions? Those bother me the most, and if they're good, I'll prolly download all the packs.
