Well it's art style is better than EQ2, though that isn't saying much.

Still looks like generic fantasy though.

Adjust the resolution of menus.
The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

I thought of it first:

Spare me. Anybody competant enough to create a FFXI server emulator worth a damn isn't stupid enough to NOT make their own game instead. "Made own MMORPG" would look a lot better on a resume than "reverse-engineered Square-Enix's Final Fantasy XI server software".

Or is the Project XI team really that ******* retarded?

Copyright is a protection that covers published and unpublished literary, scientific and artistic works, whatever the form of expression, provided such works are fixed in a tangible or material form. This means that if you can see it, hear it and/or touch it - it may be protected. If it is an essay, if it is a play, if it is a song, if it is a funky original dance move, if it is a photograph, HTML coding or a computer graphic that can be set on paper, recorded on tape or saved to a hard drive, it may be protected. Copyright laws grant the creator the exclusive right to reproduce, prepare derivative works, distribute, perform and display the work publicly. Exclusive means only the creator of such work, not anybody who has access to it and decides to grab it.

http://whatiscopyright.org/

An extra server would fall under reproduction of the material, probably derivative work, performance and public display. Couple violations right there by creating an unapproved private server. That's not even going into the patents that S-E holds, and I'm too lazy to look them up at the present time.

my thoughts exactly.

oh and just to be relevent to the thread, this whole elumated FFXI thing while seeming good in theory I don't agree with hacking and then basically stealing SEs game.

I was thinking the same thing, why don't these people just create their own game, hell I'm sure they could use SE's models and alter them a little to get around copyright infringement. Take the things you like about FFXI, put your "better" ideas into it and make a game that you enjoy and I would guess would interest others as well.

Emulating FFXI is a good idea... but only when FFXI's servers are formally shut down. As much as anyone may look around and see packed cities and packed zones, the nature of this game is ephemeral, just like the leaves of the trees in the encroaching autumn, making it a different breed of video game from the likes of Super Mario Bros and the original Final Fantasy. At that point in the future when SE decides to end it (presumably sometime in the 2010s), FFXI should be continued to allow future generations of people to have the chance to experience it. All offline games exist in some form which makes it playable. Hopefully one day, long after the sun has set over Vana'diel for the last time and the plug of the last server pulled out of the wall, a video game player can log into Vana'diel hosted from some other place and see the sun rise over Valkurm Dunes, beginning the cycle anew.

I'm going ot have to agree here.

I like the idea of a sever emulation, but only when the final days of the actual offical servers are numbered, which could be a very long time. The idea of a fan-based server will help keep VanaDiel alive past SE's intended death time, and I very much beleive that SE, after letting go of the origonal, wont do much to try to counter it, as the majority of their fanbase would have moved on to the next FFMMO they make.

Keep working on cracking the code, but untill SE starts shutting down the Offical servers, dont expect to see Hyrist on your server (unless someone tries to steal it form me.)

I'd say good luck running a 600,000 Account game from your parents basement..

Whats more you can almost guarentee theese servers will be almost entirly NA only. Another huge loss.

I wouldent be surprised if SE shut down ffxi completely in response to this.

I am guessing lock and deletion of this thread. I am sure SE does not approve of server emulation just like most every other MMO company.

they May not "Approve of it. But it is far from illegal.

Quote:
Most likely they will be just a login screen and you input your info and it says some error message. They then login your character and fast send everythign to a mule and have that mule send to another mule and hibranate for 30 days before they just sell it all and make a sh*t load of $$$.

These peopel have been posting this emulation crap for months, nother has been done and nothign true emulator wise will be done. If it was real it would be done already becasue 90% of the information of the game is installed on your Harddrives. It isnt that hard to make a fake login and run the game on your own PC, thing is you are alone, and even if you server emulated it it would still be just your little group and you would also have to emulate timers and a lotta other junk that the remaining 10% is made from.

Not everyone is out to scam you. Using this mentality I can see you will still b eliving with mommy and daddy when you're 30

Again I'd suggest you make your own game rather than take the majority of ff and break many copyright laws making an emulator.

Sorry no laws against this. Fair Use allows for emulators to be built and used. As long as they donot profit or distributed copyrighted software like the FFXI executable.

Ever read up on the sony case? where they tried to sue and block playstation emulators? It was rules creating emulators is within fair use, and as long as copyrighted stuff isn;t distributed there is no law breakage.

Take gravity and NCSOFT ( yes NCSOFT? - makers of l2 yes?)

They try to do their thing and get rid ofd all emulators and private game servers. Unfortunately for them, law only allows them to act on those who use AEGIS software ( gravity ) and L2Official Software ( NCSOFT ) therefore things like freya and eathena and athena and prometheus ( ragnarok ) can operate without any legal bindings. as can l2j for lineage2.

Now if they were to use SE Code in the emulator it would be illegal. but I doubt they would do that.

If an idiot ran it from mommas basement.. then they need to die...

also. they can be world usable im sure. emulators evolve. ( world as in whoever has FFXI )

and as for SE... I would think they would go HMMMMM THEY HAVE SOMETHING HERE.

this reminds me of EQ and the EQ emulator. where people with no extensive schooling ( like game compnaies require ) fixed the boats Sony Broke years ago. Sony can;t even fix them.

Emulators actually help game companies. they are just to big headed to realize this fact.

I'm sure someone will devise a 100
% anti RMT solution for a FFXI emulator. But I doubt SE would use it. to much pride.

Evidently, you've never heard of Bnetd. That's okay, not everybody is expected to these days, considering it was short-lived. If you want to learn more, there's a nice article on Wikipedia here that details everything, including its being crushed by Blizzard and the courts.

Of course, if the makers of Bnetd had decided to make their own RTS instead of wanting to play Starcraft for free, they could have avoided this issue altogether. Funny how stupid some people are, even though they accomplish fantastic feats.

I personally think it would be great to see this come to fruition. I think it would be a blast if you could get enough people to come play on the server.

But like someone already said. I'll believe it when I see it.

~~ edit: Final fantasy series has been in the US for years now and they have copyrighted everything, so if they tracked your server and found you have and are using their information for your benefit or other than the way it was meant to they would slap a million dollar or more lawsuit on you. They would make an example out of you and becasue you have taken their software and used their models which they have copyrighted as well. When you bought the game you agreed to certain things in order to play and buying the game isnt meaning the content is yours like a box of crayons, it simply gives you the ok to use their product in the way they meant it to be. This is also why they took all rights away from you in the Terms of service so that by agreeing to it you can't even sue them or have anythign against them becasue they have complete control. Go up stairs and ask your momma about the law.

The loophole goes (in an extreme nutshell as Im at work): Companies can sell you their software and have certain legal restrictions of how its used. IE you cant copy it, rent it, or otherwise distrabute it in a way that will damage the profits of its creator. The oddity comes when facing MMOs, and currently the law does not state that MMO creaters not only have a handle on their software but how you access it.

Meaning basically, all these private servers for other games are legal, as they do not infringe on protected copyright material (they do not claim, say, UO or RO as their own) all they do is change how you access the material. Companies can not claim their software is for use on their servers alone. As mentioned, in situations where material has been infringed on (AEGIS was the biggest example, which was the -actual- database used in Rag Online and not an emulated one) are acted upon quickly, but those who use EMULATED (nothing copied) server systems (myriad of ones for ultima, RO, L2) dont technically break laws.

Its dodgy and probably going to be changed in coming months, but at the moment it is possible to scrape through courts and get away with running clients on emulated servers.

My two cents:
In many countries it is not illegal to analyze the stream of messages between server and client.
In many countries it is not illegal to make a replacement of one or both of the sides of the communication. However, it is also not illegal for a company maintaining a server to deny service to anyone who has done so.

In many countries it IS illegal to use code stolen from the original in the replacement. For instance, many client-server protocols are encrypted. In order to make your own replacement for the client you would have to write the encoding software yourself, and not copy it from the reverse engineered client software.
If the replacement is small and non-commercial the owner of the original usualy thinks of it as not worth the effort to go after whoever has the replacement. However, I am sure that if they wanted, they could.

As for a legal 3rd party FFXI server, I don't see it happen anytime soon. FFXI is just too big. Also, any storytelling done in the official servers can not be used on the 3rd party server, since that would also be a violation of copyrights.

As a programmer, I can see how making an FFXI server is a challenge. If someone can pull it off, my praise for the accomplishment. I will stick to the official servers though.

Actually, it is very illegal to do this. You don't own ANY RIGHTs to FFXI, SE owns EVERYTHING even your character. So unless it's your own code (which I highly doubt it is), it's illegal. I know for a fact many MMO companies don't approve "Private Servers, though I know there is one Private RO server that is a complete recode of the original RO engine, which infact, Grvaity can't do anything about, because it's their own code inside, but the RO shell on the outside. So basically, this won't ever happen, till you can somehow get past POL, which you can't. And even if you do, you'll be sued in an instant. But, to each his own I guess..I'll be waiting for the "omg i'm getting sued by SE ; ;" posts :)

My exact sentiments. As a student doing a degree in Artificial Intelligence I might not understand the complete network implications involved in such a tast but I certainly can respect it :P It wont stop me playing on the proper FFXI servers, but if available might make the perfect testing ground for items/abilities/job combinations on certain mobs....

Apparently you don't quite understand this, do you? Let's take this in terms of a console emulator. That's legal to do. What's illegal to do is to rip the software from the cartridges, post them on the internet, and let people download them. This server project is just that: people copying FFXI.

Bottom line: in terms of FFXI, SE owns everything.
