The SE developers at the fan fest last year said directions don’t matter and even laughed at the idea. Then again it can't hurt.

Actually they said something like... Wherever your heart tells you.

It was very poetic really, once they got over the snorting and laughing.

Ya know, it breaks my heart a little that I took the time to do an experimental test and logged the results of over 1000 synths (with a significant amount of gil lost in the process) only to determine that direction had very little if any impact on crafting results, shared them with the crafting community here, and people still throw out those charts and little anecdotes about how direction makes a difference yadda yadda.

I want those many hours of my wasted life back, or at least for people to stop being superstitious.

Face North by North-West ... use a Fire Crystal .. put four coloured rocks in the synth boxes .... hit Return .... and kiss your rocks goodbye.

Apologies, sorry for that

This is going to sound really stupid, BUT I always seem to have the best luck when facing the window in my MH or Rent-A-Room. Maybe it's just a superstition for me now but I always return here whenever crafting for skill ups. ^^

Sorry, I missed the post. Perhaps you could put a link in here? I've been sort of informally testing the direction theory for quite a while now. All my synthing sessions, I alternate between N and NW. I have seen no difference, even when squinting hard.

Actually the way I remembered the SE interview the question was something like 'Does direction faced affect synthing' and their answer along the lines of 'That might depend on what you are trying to synth', which seemed to be at the time to be as close to an admission as they were ever going to give.

I've logged well over 200 crafting levels, as well as done one thousand + leather belt desynths, and as far as I am concerned, direction and day are very important.
If you choose not to listen to these opinions, that is your choice, but I would not recommend you crafting.
Easiest way for me to remember which way to face is that if you start from fire(northwest) and move counter-clockwise, the elements are in order of weakness.
Fire-water-lightning-earth-air-ice, with light and dark thrown in at NE and N respectively. If you can remember one, you can figure out the rest.

That being said, there are generally 3 ways to face: your crystal, strong to your crystal, other. Crystal will make it easier, strong will be harder, other is neutral.
If it is too difficult, you wont get much success, if it is too easy, you wont get much skill. And remember you cannot get skillups from fails if you are more than 5 under cap.

Edit: Had to think about how much crafting ive done.

You can face the direction that is strong to your crystal, but you facing the direction weak to your crystal is neutral?

It was a very long time ago and no way am I digging it up. I don't even remember the title. It's probably almost 2 years old now, if that helps.

Frankly if people want to keep doing the hokey pokey for their voodoo crafting it doesn't hurt me, but yes, it is a little annoying that I wasted all that time of mine just so they'd save themselves a few seconds of time and in the end they still do it.

O HAY GUZY I JUSS FOUND OUT DAT WANIN GIBBUS IZ DA BEST DAY 2 CRAFT
SPRED TEH WURD

Seriously, unless someone has recorded data with controlled variables suggesting otherwise that they want to share, they need to just cut the crap with direction.

The only way direction has any effect at all on crafting is if it has a relationship with another variable that hasn't yet been explored.

In other words, facing W for a certain kind of crystal does not effect direction in and of itself. Facing W on certain days or certain times or certain phases of the moon, who knows. There could be a different correct direction to face on Firesday during New Moon, and then the direction could change for Firesday during Full Moon, and change yet again for Watersday during Full Moon at 5:00.

But it's not as simple as Crystal+ Direction= Win. There is no linear improvement in direction to crystal relationships. Not in success rate or HQ rate. (I haven't tested skillup rates and I'm not going to)
