I've been trying for ages to get my gf to play ffxi with me and finally she said yes. Only problem is that we live together and have only 1 computer on which to play.

I was in the US recently and was able to buy one of the PS2 HDD's with FFXI. My question is whether there is a way to get a PAL PS2 (im from Australia) to operate not only an NTSC version of FFXI but to use the HDD as well since its installation disc is also NTSC. I do have my PS2 mod chipped so i can play regular NTSC games but i cant figure out how to get FFXI or the HDD to work.

Not sure if this is an appropraite place to post this question but i've tried PS2 forums with no luck so this is my last chance. Any help would be great ^^

I'm from the UK and used to play FFXI on the PS2. However, you do require a US PS2 in order to do it.

You would technically be able to run the PlayOnline/FFXI software on your PS2 with a modchip and even possibly install it on the HDD if the PAL PS2 would even notice it's existence (something i'm not sure on) in the first place. However, since PlayOnline uses DNAS (PS2's mod protection for online games), the PS2 will not allow you to connect as the PS2 will detect your modification and block your access.

I had to import a NTSC PS2 and buy a copy of the NTSC software of FFXI (the bundle that came with the HDD) in order to be able to play (I was on the PC originally but my main machine broke down). But, in short, you will not be able to play FFXI on your PS2, no matter what. Sorry.

You can also put together a cheaply build PC or heck even a Wal-Mart special for a couple hundred bucks and save yourself a lot of hassle. FFXI's computer requirements aren't that high which you probably already know.

Just my suggestion, but I tend to have a lot of computer parts laying around ^^;

Thanks for the info all. One other question then. If I get a new PS3 that is backwards compatible to NTSC version of the PS2, will FFXI operate on that in the same manner as though I bought an NTSC PS2?

Yes the PS3 is compatible with the update available via the online store for free. This will allow you to install the game with no problems. For warning the PS3 will not make FFXI look any better then if you were playing it on a PS2 so quality of video is still poor due to the actual PS2 game.

Just to clarify: It won't look any worse either, but it won't look any better (not sure why anyone would expect it to). Just pointing this out because some people (not bijiont here) seem to like implying it'll look like it's 8 bit or something.

Na not saying that at all, just wanted to point it out because a lot of people think because you hook up your PS3 and run a nice $80 HDMI cable FFXI is going to look amazing. It will be the same as a PS2 in every form, graphics, sounds, etc etc. Another thing which I will point out if you are considering this, the wireless PS3 controllers do work along with standard USB keyboards so nothing has changed there.

Thanks ThePalace, maybe I should have worded that a little more clearly ^^;.

Please be aware that you need a US PS3 to run FFXI, a European one (not out yet to boot) won't get you any further).

For the cost of a PS3, you'd get a low level PC capable of playing FFXI, the system requiremnts are really low and it will still look better than the PS2 version.

I played the 360 beta version of FFXI for a few weeks (before finally getting the PC version this week) and it was great running it in HD on a console. I'd definitely recommend picking it up on Xbox 360 - you'll need the Premium Pack, but you can probably get that and a copy of FFXI for under UK£300 (Aus$600?60000? I dunno Australian currency). That way you can just plug a USB keyboard and and use the analogue sticks for more accurate movement and camera control (I actually use a wired 360 pad in my PC for general movement on the game now).

I actually did some price checks last week, and building a PC that can play FFXI phenomenally well costs just slightly more than a PS3. (About $650 to $750 US)
