How do you minimize FFXI?Follow

#1 Apr 08 2008 at 6:59 PM Rating: Decent
Hi, I was tired of having ffxi close on me (accidently clicked window button or pop up comes up) and FFXI loses it's full screen and kicks me off. How do you open it in a small desktop frame instead of taking the whole screen?

I have vista for laptop and windows 2000 for desktop. Please help me, just so frustrated with it. Also it's nice to work and play. *wink *wink

Get the lite version if you are that worried about plugins/scripts, as it has no support for either (yet still performs better than SE's windowed mode). I'd still suggest using the normal version and at least using the priority and drawdistance plugins, which only serve to improve the appearance and performance of the game.

If you're a *********, go with Lafaiel's method. If you'd prefer to skip what is basically the technological equivalent of hammering a nail through your *****, go with what bsphil said. The only catch, of course, is that with the official windower, you have no chance of getting banned. With the unofficial windower... well, you're not going to get banned for using that either, but it might make the game more beautiful and functional, so be warned.

I have absolutely no issues using the official Windowed version.
Some lag in populated places, but this happens in full screen too (as it appears to be a graphics driver issue).
I have also used the Draw Distance stand-alone to up it to maximum and have my overlay resolution set to 2000x2000.
Everything looks crisp, clean, smooth and generally lovely.

What advantage would Windower give? (Even if it could run on my PC without illegal erroring everytime I try to start the game).

illegal error is from a broken plug in, check their site and see which ones are currently broken(recast most likely, as it breaks every time SE adds a new JA), remove that from your plugin folder, and the errors will stop

Except if it were baby photos, it would be like looking at before and afters of Michael Jackson. Only instead of turning into a white guy, he changes into a chick!
#7Theonehio, Posted: Apr 09 2008 at 4:19 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Use whatever version you want, I've used the windower.net windower before, seen no real benefit other than the plugins, which people lied before hand that they only wanted FFXI windowed and couldn't care about plugins, so in the end it comes to this:

While I appreciate the suggestion (and I'll give it a try when I next get the chance), the 'Known Issues' section stated that Windower has a problem with Vista and also GeForce 8x00 series cards... I have both.
I doubt it's going to work, but then the only plug in I want is the draw distance.

In before the "Windower = cheating" **********

Your choices are really to use FFXI's Windowed mode or the Windower app. Windowed mode is pretty poor all-in-all. The Windower app does a much more capable job of allowing you to minimise the game and doesn't threaten to interfere with your other applications. I'd reccomend using it if you have the choice.

I use an 8800 and have no problems with the Windower app. Glad of it too; the LightLuggage and DrawDistance plugins have really made playing FFXI a vastly more enjoyable experience for me.

windower.net windower lets you alt-tab but still play with no border around screen. The official windower doesn't seem to allow that.

Alt-TAB works on my PC with the official Windowed mode.
The amount of times I switch between FFXI, webpages and Media Player is unreal.

then you seem to have figured out a trick to it, seeing as most of the ffxi c playing community can't figure it out. i can only get it to work if i log out and use it from the log in screen(which sort of defeats the purpose)

i don't use full screen mode anyway, I prefer to see my start menu so i can watch the clock easily

I seemed to have missed the bit about 'not having a border around the screen.'

My bad. Sorry.
