Does the icon or menu item you're clicking still have the path set to your local drive?

edit- I mean right click on POL on your desktop and look at the properties. Does it still try to run it from your C drive? (or whichever it is on your computer)

You can install it on your external hard drive, but you need to do somethings before you just plug that external drive into another computer to make it run. You are going to need to import registry settings to any other PC you want to play on also. You are then going to need to register the FFXI and POL .dll files on every PC you play on.

When I try to open POL i get an "Error code=200008014 Cannot open registry key for install path of Playonline-compatible software. ID=1000."

You need to export all the registry keys related to FFXI from the PC you installed it on originally and import them into the registry on the laptop. Hopefully you are running the same OS on both machines.

open the registry editor (windows+R ->regedit on windows), go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PlayOnline (PlayonlineUS/PlayonlineEU for na/eu versions respectively), right click-> export, then save it. to import them, simple double click the .reg file.

Or if you have lots of time:-

a.) Install it on one PC with the drive attached.

b.) Plug it into the 2nd PC and delete the directory

c.) Install the game again to the drive using the new PC using exactly the same directory path

That way the installation program will do all the work, it just takes longer.

Some registry settings, and a batch file I found somewhere else here or on windower.net for reinstalling. Then set your options you want.

Change the C:\\Program Files\\ etc to your actual install location before you run the ffxi.reg.
Save as FFXI.reg and install wrote:

POL will update/checkfiles but you won't have to download anything new.
