Unrecognizable Disc on 360Follow

#1 Aug 28 2009 at 6:10 AM Rating: Good
Sorry, I dont have a premium account so I cant search if this has been addressed.

I started playing on the 360 about a month ago when my POS computer finally crapped out. This situation has happened twice in the last 2 weeks. When I exit out of the game the night before the system freezes with a black screen. The next day I'll get a 360 error saying "This disc is unrecognizable". Its not the disc for 2 reasons, A) the game hasnt left the system since I bought it and B) I bought another copy and still had error. Clearing system cache which uninstalls FFXI does fix the issue, but we all know it takes 5-6 hours to reinstall which is a pain in the ***. It seems to me that its a hard drive issue but the Xbox is only 5 weeks old. Every other game plays just fine, just FFXI the one game I truly want to play ***** up.

I was hoping that this has happened to someone else and they can tell me what to do to remedy this. I made the mistake of calling Xbox's tech support line and after he wasted 15 minutes not listening to what I was saying and having me repeatedly check the disc for scratches I hung up. I'm hoping I can get some help from you guys. Thanks!

I don't know if this is a permanent fix, but I used to have the same problem. It has to do with the new software for the Xbox platform not being compatible with Final Fantasy or something along those lines. The way I fixed it though was when I reinstalled again, you download the disc to your hard drive, that seems to be a good fix. From then on you just start the disc from your HD and you are good to go.

Hope that works for you.

Thanks for the reply. I did not try copying disc to drive. I did see its not possible to install the game to the driver though. I found out the hard way that reinstalling fixes it but by the time I get home from work and try the game its after 6pm. Last night I found the problem again at 6pm and wasnt able to log in until 11pm by the time it finished downloading updates. Thats not that big of a deal if it happened once a year but its already happened twice in 10 days so I'm a little ocncerned. Oh well.

Supposedly it only happens if you don't quit POL properly.

The workaround is to use the NXE's 'Copy to HD' feature. This will work even if the disc is 'unreadable' when you try to play. Once you've used the copy to HD feature, POL will work fine every time.

If you can't afford the extra space, quitting POL properly should avoid the problem.

Copy to HD is:
Highlight 'My XBOX' and click yellow 'Game Details', then choose 'Install to Hard Drive'

If you have the individual expansion disc's you can download to hard drive just the WotG disc. It doesn't need much space. If you bought a 1 disc set, then you're going to need the 120gig HDD. Not logging out properly has nothing to do with it btw, I've had the game freeze, been timed out, etc. forcing me to turn the game off many times and never had to re-install because of it.

Thanks for all of the help.

As for not logging properly, what happens when I log is the screen goes black like normal but it never makes it to the xbox dashboard. I have seen it take as long as 3 or 4 minutes to log out before but I let this sit for an hour before I just turned the system off.

I hate to sound stupid but what is NXE? I have only owned a 360 for about 5 weeks and havent come across anything called that. Thanks again.

My original FFXI discs for 360 look like a wolverine went to town on it. Something about the way the discs sit in the tray really did a number on them. Luckily an extra Wings Expansion was found for 10 dollars as a replacement. And I installed it to HDD for safe measure.

I'm having the EXACT same problem and I don't know what to do. I'm so confused and very irritated. I just purchased a new 360 (they lowered the prices) and feel cheated because this game isn't working at all.

I have installed and patched the game three times within the last two days because of an error: "This disc is unrecognizable". I am forced to clear the system cache and reinstall.

To the people above saying "Install to HD" when I go to the disc and click on this it says "Installing this game is unsupported". So I'm not sure how you all managed to do it.. am I doing something wrong? I'm at a loss and I need help. I spent $320 giving up the PS2 for enhanced graphics. Instead I'm having headaches...

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I am also having the excat same problem
Every time I have to reinstall POL I loose all my macros and that is almost a bigger concern to me then having to reinstall everytime i want to play.
It will not let me install the disc directly to hard drive while in NTE. Is there a way to go thourgh POL and install to hard drive?

Just recently had to return my SECOND 360 due to E 74 and got it replaced with the $299 360's. First thing I noticed was that I couldn't copy either the original release XI NOR the 2008 collection to the HDD, also couldn't access the original disc to even install the game due to the (Must Install to HDD error).

After installing the 2008 copy, I was able to update and play just fine. I decided to take a break after a few hours of campaign battles but decided to get back on a few hours later only to find that the system was unable to read the disc..... This is most definitely an MS ***** up seeing as the only changes to the setup is the system. Smiley: disappointed

*Edit* To those who DO NOT WANT TO KEEP LOSING THERE MACROS... After setting them up log back out to the character select screen and push L3+LB on the character you wish to save and it will SAVE THEM TO THE SERVER. When you want to retrieve them it's R3+RB on the character of choice.

Sorry to drsg up an old post but here we go again. I have found that sometimes it takes about 5 minutes to actually log out of FFXI so when I first created this post I wasnt giving it that much time, I was just shutting it down. Well last night I go to log out and let the system sit for over an hour and it never made it back to POL. So I figure it would be time for another reinstall, turn off the machine, turn it back on and go back to Clear System Cache, and now that doesnt uninstall FFXI.

Now, my question is how the hell do I get FFXI uninstalled? I dont see POL or FFXI anywhere on my HDD. I was using the function to remove it when I had these problems before. I'm hoping I dont have to reformat the HDD as I dont own a memory card to copy all of my game saves to and dont really want to shell out $30 or more (not sure how much card is) just to reintsall FFXI.

Again, I hope someone has experienced and found a way to fix these issues. Thanks in advance.

The joy of ffxi on 360.
If you're getting disc unreadable and have the latest xbox dashboard you
a) cannot copy pol to the hard drive to fix it
b) cannot run pol to uninstall it.

However, given that clearing the 360 cache seems to delete playonline off the hard drive *unintentionally*, you could always try doing that and then reinstalling. See: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/polnews/news16696.shtml

Those of us who copied our WotG/POL discs to the hard drive pre-last update don't have this problem, but as far as I can tell anyone with a newer version of NXE are out of luck, unless someone knows a way to update the 360 dashboard to an older version.

I bought the Vana'diel Collection 2008 for Xbox this past Sunday and ran into a plethora of issues from Disc Read Errors to black screens. After speaking with both Xbox support, and then finally Square-Enix support, S-E claims that the NXE (new Xbox experience) broke the way in which files install onto the Xbox hard drive, thus breaking the game.

I was told by the SE CSR that the only way around it is to format the Xbox and not update to NXE. And he said even then, if you turn off the Xbox without shutting down POL all the way or get D/C'd from power outage or latency through your ISP, that it can still bork the system regardless.

To which, I suggested "Maybe you should pull the product then, if it doesn't work on that platforms console?" and he replied that it was Microsofts issue with how they rolled out NXE and that SE feels it's not their responsibility to fix the issue.

What a headache. And when trying to explain this to Gamestop, they just gave me another free game (re: account) so I could try with another disc. Microsoft said because it's only that game, and all other games work, that it's a SE issue and not Microsofts. *facepalm*

Note u will aslo need the serial number b4 u can format it again also be prepared to reinstall the whole game again but this fixed the disc read error.
serial number can be foun in system info

Important After you format your Xbox 360 Hard Drive, all the data will be lost, and you cannot recover the data from your Xbox 360 Hard Drive. Make sure that you want to format your Xbox 360 Hard Drive before you continue.

To format your Xbox 360 Hard Drive, follow these steps:
Start your Xbox 360 console without a disc in the disc tray.
In the System section of the Xbox 360 Dashboard, select Memory to view the Storage Devices area.
In the Storage Devices area, select Hard Drive if you want to format the hard drive or other storage device, and then press the Y button on your Xbox 360 controller or on the remote control.
In the Device Options area, select Format. You receive the following message:
This will delete all content on this device. Do you want to continue?
To format your Xbox 360 Hard Drive, select Yes.

So anything on new this?... I locked up last week and got the disk unreadable error and reformated my hard drive and reinstalled the game everything worked fine. Well It happened again last night, I got an error and can not read disk. I am tired of reformatting and reinstalling.

Clearing the cash no longer works anymore.

I have s 20 gig hard drive and It says I can not install to my hard drive. I have read some places that it was because of the 20 gig drive but recently I heard the new dashboard update Does not allow POV to be installed even on 120 gig drives is this true or speculation?

The work around was to install to the hard drive and I am willing to get a new hd if this still works, I just do not want to buy a new hd drive if you no longer can intall ffxi to the hard drive.

Thanks
Dave

I recently had my xbox repaired and managed to get on POL easily.

My problem was when I clicked play and it told me I have a problem with FF11.

I uninstalled the proper way and left it for a bit.

On Monday I decided to reinstall the game and everything was fine. I finished update, logged in and then realized I forgot to backup my macros to server on PC.

Logged out of the game the proper way (logging via the POL viewer) and then had the unreadable disc error when I tried to log in.

I'm hoping there is another solution other than a full HD reformat as I have no memory card and can't afford to lose my save data from my other games.

I can still play on PC so it isn't too bad at the moment.

Well there was a fix and that is to install to the hard drive, have you done tried that? (could not be done on a 20 gig) but now I am hearing this is not an option since the last dashboard update. Stil trying to find out if this is true or not though...

Dave

Going to elaborate on information gained from hours of chatting with Xbox live support to answer this.

1. Microsoft knows about the issue they get hundreds of Unable to read disk calls daily, their advice is to play a different game or clear cache.
2. There is no installation fix, microsoft learned that players were installing the disc to hard drive and disabled the feature for certain games including FFXI.
3. Microsoft is not concerned with fixing the problem, this revelation came from a supervisor, your xbox warranty will not cover unreadable disc error.
4. If you clear the cache you will have to reinstall the entire game including downloading all updates.
5. "We found that installing games which frequently update to the hdd was not efficient and removed the function from NXE" Customer service rep #3.

Now granted all of this could be avoided if Microsoft would allow you to permanently install PoL to the hdd you pay for but as rep after rep has told me this cannot be done anymore. My suggestion to everyone who has purchased a $300 paper wieght and plays this game on it is to spam their tech support lines, all of them, make Microsoft listen, cuss them out, make them hang up on you, let them know you are angry and their behavior is unacceptable. The more voices scream in their ears the faster they will wake up and fix this nightmare.

Yes, Microsoft support for Xbox 360 seem to not care about the issue...which is surprising seeing that they still claim to support the game and have a new version (which hopefully works around the current NXE problems) coming next month (Ultimate Collection).

I did a full HDD format yesterday, and did a POL/FFXI install/update all in one sitting (about 5 hours total). FFXI booted up fine after the update, and I left it on until my wife got home so she could play it. After playing for the evening, we logged off the game & POL properly (all the way back to the NXE dashboard) and checked to see if we were able to start POL again. It did start, so hopefully this is a good sign (this is regarding the FFXI Vana'diel 2008 Collection only, the SE service rep said the original FFXI & Expansions might have more problems on the NXE dashboard).

It sucks that SE is aware of the issue, but have their hands tied because it's a Microsoft issue. The SE Rep sounded legitimately apologetic in regards to the situation, as he said they get a lot of calls about the problem. But he said they cannot issue a "workaround" as it wouldn't be in their best interest to modify their software to work around issues Microsoft created (whether intentional or not). I can kind of understand that, but it still is a terrible business model...which probably explains the hold up with FFXIV being announced for Xbox 360.

With POL/FFXI running well on my NXE-version Xbox 360, I would suggest anyone with problems using older game version prior to the Vana'diel collection pay the $15 to get the collection (has all 4 expansions) or wait for Ultimate and reinstall it to their Xbox to see if it fixes the problem.

I have the original xbox live release, and the 2008 vanadiel collection which I recieved instead of my WoTG disk I preordered, and also the most recent version of the WoTG expansion disk. All 3 disks have problems with NXE basically if
A. Blackscreen occurs during play.
B. A sound file fails to load properly resulting in black screen at shutdown.
C. You lose internet connection at any time forcing you to shut down improperly.
D. You lag out during Campaign, Besieged ect.
E. Game Freezes for any reason.
the next time you try to load PoL you will get an unable to read disk error. Honestly I was thinking about this problem yesterday and if SE would distribute an install disk with just Playonline on it and Microsoft would allow it to be installed to the HDD none of us would have this problem anymore. The only problem is when the machine is incorrectly shut down it corrupts the Playonline files in use by the system. It's really a pain, so much so that I don't even play on my xbox 360 much anymore it sits on it's shelf and collects dust while I play FFXI on my PS2 i've had since 2002. Really embarrassing for microsoft there.

ok i think i may have stumbled accross a fix. do hold me to this but the other day i shutdown ffxi but the xbox froze and i had to turn it off at the mains. so i thought to myself oh hell no im not going through another 6hrs of downloads so rung round some mates to see if they were free for me to do the two 360 trick. managed to arrange with a mate to do this but i was messing around on xbox marketplace trying to dl some demos when i decided to play my ipod through my 360. i was listening to 2001 dr dre(what a class album i must add) and was looking through the memory settings but when i came out of the option i pressed the eject disc option by accident and then selected the close disc tab. i listened to the xbox warm up twice and on the third attempt prepared for dissappoitment and anger but to my suprise the message came up explaining playonline was not shut down properly and that this can cause corrupt data so i clicked start playonline and heypresto it worked. this is the first time i tried it whilst listening to my ipod and i dont want to try it again just incase it doesnt work but if anyone has this problem i suggest trying this, whats the worst that can happen.

Instead of an iPod I used my mobile telephone and played the only mp3 it had on it.
I noticed when I tried to load it the first time the song cut out when my XBOX tried to load the POL disc and got a fail for it.
It might be worth making a small playlist for this (I had my song on repeat).

And as this guy says it opens the POL screen and tells you you had a error shutting down last time.

It worked for me so hopefully it will for you.

Update: You don't need an ipod or anything. Just play any music you have stored on your XBOX when you try to run the disc.
