Pikko,
First let me say that you have a talent for writing. When I first clicked the link to read what was happening, I'd assumed I'd be able to brush off the latest "SE has ruined my life" thread aside and go on about my business as I so often do. Yes, I'm jaded. And I make no apologies for being so.
But, you have managed to do something most people can't: I now sympathize for you. You're right, it isn't fair. But, I'm afraid it is how the world (and SE) work sometimes.
I'll offer you this advice: Instead of focusing on what you're losing, focus on what you're gaining. You'll have the opportunity to make all new friends as well as keep the old ones. New adventures await as you have to hit the new level cap all over again. Isn't all that worth giving up a name?
FFXI was never about any one thing. It was about a group of people playing a game they all enjoyed. Some loved the grind, some loved to make stuff, or grow stuff or do whatever it is they did. You'll still be able to do that. You'll still be able to do what makes you happy, even if it is under a new name. As someone on these very forums once said, "It's not about getting to level 75, its the fun you have on the way."
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."

Worry not, Pikko. Even if you don't have the name Pikko, you'll still be you. And you'll still be able to enjoy the game.
