What controllers work with Windows 7 64 bit?Follow

#1 Apr 12 2010 at 10:29 AM Rating: Decent
Hi, I recently 'upgraded' to Windows 7 64 bit, and my controllers have stopped working. I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with the controllers as they work with all other games, even the FFXI config and I've tried two.

So my question is, does anyone have any controllers that work with Windows 7 64 bit?

I have the Logitech dual action controller and it works just fine with windows 7. Cost me about 20 bucks 2 years ago so it's probably way cheaper now.

PS2 Controller with USB Adapter works like a charm. Same goes for Wireless Logitech PS2 Controller, again with the USB adapter.

Thanks guys but every reply I get is like 'works for me'

I wonder why it doesn't work for me :\ 360 nor Logitech. They work in every game even in the FFXI config, just not the FFXI game

Ps3 sixaxis also works using the MotioninJoy drivers, but it's a pain in the **** as you have to disable driver signing upon every boot.

Logitech Rumblepad 2 worked without any special configuration, and I wouldn't recommend using a 360 controller unless you want to wrestle with the XBCD drivers (not sure if they are even updated for 7). I don't think that the triggers are mapped properly.

If it doesn't work in the game itself, I'd suggest trying to toggle the *analog* button - some controllers have a button to manually turn on the analog sticks. Also, in the FFXI config make sure that enable hat swtiches is toggled to *on*, and you are configuring it in the FFXI config rather than the Playonline Config.

Other than that, I don't know why it would work in everything except FFXI. Is the window *in focus*? If you aren't using the third party windowing solution, you need to make sure the window is always in focus.

I'm going to get a logitech tommorow, and yeah, I've tried in all 4 variations of windowed FFXI. Still won't work.

Neither will my 360 controller with XBCD drivers.

Toggling the analog button did nothing :\

For people using 360 controllers, what drivers are you using?

Double checked config, with my 360 controller, movement/buttons are fine but camera will only move from the bottom left to the top right and the d pad wont move, anyone else experience something like that?

I got my PS3 controller working over USB...but the process is kind of annoying, so I wouldn't really recommend it.

Main problem is likely that with 64-bit you need signed drivers unless you F8 at boot and tell the system to ignore that requirement...every...single...time...

(or you sign the drivers...)

Microsoft's original drivers. Wireless receiver with wireless controller. I don't have access to my triggers with it but so far I haven't missed them.

It's the enforced driver signing. FYI even if you use a PS2 to USB adapter it has to have a signed 64-bit driver to work with 64-bit Windows. Some of them like the Mayflash ones have this but some of the cheaper no-name ones rely on unsigned public domain drivers.

Logitech controllers should have a signed 64-bit driver available so I don't know why it wouldn't work for you. The xbox 360 controller should also work with the official MS driver although FFXI won't recognize the shoulder buttons because they are sliders and not actual buttons.

Also if you have trouble getting FFXI to recognize one of the sticks on a controller try disabling the "Enable slider" box in FFXI's gamepad configuration.

SE needs to add Xinput support to FFXI, MS is phasing out Directinput and it's causing more and more problems as the years wear on.

Adjust the resolution of menus.
The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

I use the 64-bit version of XBCD and disable driver signing enforcement.

I disable driver signing by using a 512k USB stick with a boot loader that automatically selects advanced boot options and then disables driver signing. You can also just hit F8 and select it manually every time you boot but I found that annoying.

I have a PS2 to USB adapter I got from Mayflash years ago, when I reinstalled Windows 7 64 bit recently it had the drivers preloaded and I didn't need to do anything special to get it working. I have the 'PC013 Super Dual Box' model from them, works well.

You have to put the OS into test mode for that to work, and then you get a watermark in the corner of the screen that says "TEST MODE" which will annoy the hell out of you as if your desktop is shining a laser beam directly into your eyeballs.

You can remove that but it involves hacking Windows and MS might do something in an update in the future which might make Windows explode if you have done this.

The bootable USB stick method is the most convenient way IMO. Just stick it into one of your rear USB ports and forget about it.

FYI Mayflash has an adaptor for the Wii Classic and Classic pro controllers now.

Yeah, I didn't do it, but I remembered there being a method for modding the driver so you didn't need to do the F8 thing.

I edited it in because I figured, gosh, if I don't, then someone will be all like, you can mod the driver.

Long story short, I just figured it was a PITA, and that if I -really- wanted to play games with a pad on my PC (was messing with my on-clearance copy of SFIV), I'd just go buy a Logitech PS2 clone and be done with it.

It's not really modding the driver it's creating a fake security certificate. And the OS must be in test mode for this to work. The driver signatures are by Verisign and so far nobody has cracked them (and not for lack of trying). Cracking the security certificate encryption is about as likely as someone cracking the encryption on our security tokens.

(and before anyone chimes in, using a virus to steal a security code and then crashing FFXI doesn't count as cracking the encryption)

Any reason why the right stick won't fully work for movement or camera? It just defaults the + to the bottom left and will only move between the bottom left and the top right of the box.

The left stick however, will work with both for some reason.

What kind of controller are you using?

I use a cheap old Nyko Airflow, and I didn't even bother loading the drivers that came with it; Windows 7 64 went and found an acceptable set of drivers on its own, and I've had no problems with it other than having to reprogram the camera (for some reason the analog ended up upside down.)
