The Best USB Controller?Follow

I have been using a Sony controller with a USB converter ever since I switched to PC from PS2. I have been through so many converters it's not even funny. I have also been through 3 Logitech USB controllers (Don't remember the model except that it was a light metallic blue and was heavy) which only lived for 3-4 months at $35 a whack.
I would love to hear about anyone having any great success with any USB controller out there or highly recommend a particular one. Suggestions anyone?

Hey, you, yeah you there, that guy with the stupid keyboard vs. controller argument. Shut it. We don't need another one of those threads.

Thank You very much for the info!! *Goes shopping for a PS3 controller*

I actually enjoyed the wireless xbox controller on my pc for several months. until something happened and the wireless reciever stopped working... wires came loose inside the cord. but honestly that very well could have been my fault. but its a very nice set up i thought, and since i own an xbox as well, its was already comfortable for me. other than that i have gone through so many of them. the phillips one with the retractable cord... sucks. looked very nice, but the response left something to be desired and i found the cord got in the way. being it was retractable and the flat design instead of round like normal, the cord stayed curled.

at the moment im using a logitech dual action pc controller (dark blue, rubber side grips) and it is ok to say the best. the response is nothing like the wireless xbox one, but much better then the philips. its also almost identical to a ps2 controller, and very basic configuring is required. hit default setting b i think and enable hat switches and its pretty much ready, minus a few minor tweaks.

Philips controller took a bit of time to configure. and this thing felt god awful awkward to hold. felt very bulky and very heavy.

X-box wireless controller this is the only bad part. it comes with a disk to install, but honestly you dont need it, as soon as you plug the wireless receiver in, windows finds the drivers itself. after that it takes a few minutes to configure it right. but once i did it a few times (restoring pc) it became pretty fast, and usually didnt take longer then 5 mins. also it takes batteries, get a charger and some rechargable ones and this is no problem, or if you have an x-box plug and play kit already, just plug the usb end, into an open usb port on your pc to charge it that way. oh and any x-box controller works with this too. i have 5, even one third party one with fans built in, and they all worked.

i am sure i have tested a few others over the years, but these are the ones i have used a lot. i have had the logitech for 3 years and still working. philips i gave away and only used it for a 2 weeks. x-box one i had for a good 7 months b4 the receiver cord went, but i did take it everywhere so i could have broke the cord myself as i said.

I have heard from some that the XBox controller is very much like Playstation's but with you saying that there was a wiring issue, your fault or not I think I will go with the PS3's controller. I guess I'm pushing it asking if you can do it with the wireless one and I totally forgot about the battery issue which is just plain bad for me. 2 kids + lot of electronics= all batteries, rechargeable or not magically evaporate around here and upon questioning it's "I don't know" lol.
Think I am going to go with the PS3 wired controller because Playstation controllers have been very, very good to me. They take a lickin' and keep on tickin'

Thank You very much everyone for your input! :)

I can't for the life of me get my triggers to configure for macros on my wired 360 controller, so I'd say a cheap, dual analog usb controller or a ps3 one (only if you own an extra/have an extra charge cable due to price) would be best.

If anyone knows how to get the triggers to work under ffxi config please let me know.

http://killingifrit.com/forums/topic/122732-xbox-360-controller-for-pc/
buy that and setup gamepad default a and its just like using ps2 controler on a ps2 ffxi

p.s. the rumble featue has never worked me on pc whether it be a 360 control or logitech. idk why its even in the setup to enable

In order to use a PS3, do you need any special software to get it to work. A year or 2 ago, I decided to go with a wired 360 controller, based on what I read about getting a PS3 to work. (Way beyond my basic computer knowledge)

If there is a simple download I can do, that would be a godsend for me. (My 360 controller has been acting up lately, so could be a good time to switch)

If you are using 64-bit windows (even 64-bit XP) there are only 3 ways to get unsigned drivers to work.

1. Test sign it and then put your Os into "test mode" This is used by driver developers so they don't have to get a new driver signature from MS for every single beta version. The drawback to this is your OS is now in a debug mode and you also have an annoying "TEST MODE BUILD XXXXXXXXX" watermark in the lower right corner of your screen.

2. Manually hit F8 every time your computer boots and select "override driver signing"

3. Automate this by making a bootable USB flash drive and write a special boot sector to it that selects the advanced boot menu and then selects "override driver signing" (basically the same as #2 except it now happens automagicly)

You can also do #3 with your hard drive but I wouldn't recommend that because MS might decided to be @#%^s at some point in the future and make this not work, which could leave you with an unbootable computer.

The converters made by Mayflash have up to date signed drivers for 64-bit windows BTW.

I thought of it first:

Driver to make 360 controller triggers work

This worked fine for me before I decided to start using a PS3 controller.

Anadosia: A wireless PS3 controller can be connected via USB and used that way. Batteries are internal on PS3 controllers, and are recharged when connected to a USB port -- there is no way to manually remove the battery, so kids are a non-issue. For using the controller wirelessly, you will need a Bluetooth receiver, but I personally just use mine with USB connection, as I don't feel like buying a receiver that I won't use for anything else.

If you already have a PS2, look into getting a PS2->USB adapter. I use them and they work quite nice (and also require no driver files except those found in Windows natively). Everything 'cept the Rumble feature works with the particular adapter I have (I think it might even work? I forget).

For those that are interested in getting the 360 XBCD drivers to work, have a look a this thread:

XBCD Drivers Info

The link that Brindy posted is half of the equation (where to get the drivers) but getting them set up isn't explained very well up there. Good luck!

I use the 360 controller and don't even bother with the special drivers. I just map the macro palettes to the bumpers rather than the triggers. May throw you off if you are used to actually playing on the 360 itself however.

What do you use as the Auto-run button and the Screen shot button then? That was the dealbreaker for me.

I've adjusted to using the start button for auto-run, and default to the print screen button for screenshots.

Google Motioninjoy. You can download their software which will make it possible to use a PS3 controller either by cord or wireless via bluetooth. Be aware that it's iffy on the bluetooth, though. It would seem not all bluetooth adapters work but they do carry a list of ones that do on their forums as it is a very common issue. Mine didn't so I went with using a cord and just used my adapter for my mic ear piece so it wasn't a complete waste of 30 bucks(which I had because my cell turned out being not bluetooth able)

Be also aware that as Cal mentioned sort of by choosing the bluetooth route means your bluetooth adapter works in such a way that it will be exclusive to the controller so that it can work and will not be able to work with other bluetooth devices. At least for motioninjoy's software.

I have a question about using a Ps3 wireless controller on PC.

If i have the wireless controller pluged into the pc. Will pressing the PS3 button still activate my ps3? If it dosn't then you just made my day cause I've found the 360 controller to be too sensetive and at the same time not sensetive enough... if that makes any sense
